汽车的引擎由于大水而熄了火。

我读这本书只是为了消磨时间。

从上面的例子可以看出，英语中的kill 的语义范围比汉语中的“杀”要宽泛得多，不但可以表示“杀”，还可以表示其他意义。

而汉语中的“杀”则基本上不超出”kill”的语义范围，如“杀人”、“杀猪”、“杀虫”、“杀菌”等。

同样，汉语中的词汇也有些语义范围比英语中相近的词汇大得多的情况，如“实践”和“经验”两个词的语义范围就比英语中的practice 和experience大得多，翻译时必须根据实际情况，灵活掌握。

下面是《邓小平文选》第三卷里的一些例子：6) 总之，几年的实践证明，我们搞改革、开放的路子是走对了。

这里第6例和第7例中的“实践”分别译为achievements 和actions，因为它们的意义显然不是practice 一词所能涵盖的。

同理，第8例和第9例中的“经验”一词分别译为what we have learned 和precedent，而不是experience。

再如：

He refused to obey directions.

That boxer is still serving a sentence.
显然，在英语中很难找到一个语义范围和“服”相近的词。

汉语中这类词可以说是数不胜数。
