在后期发展与演变中，乡村音乐的内容发生了很大的变化。
如今，乡村音乐已俨然列入现代流行音乐的主流行列。
笔者将由此为出发点，在自身教学体验的基础上，结合已有的前人研究成果，对乡村音乐的发展和演变进行尝试性的探索。
一、乡村音乐的起源和发展
乡村音乐，一种具有美国民族特色的流行音乐，起源于20世纪20年代美国南部农村及偏远山区。
主要来源是英国的传统民间歌谣，同时也受到宗教音乐的影响，是美国白人民族音乐代表。
乡村音乐融合了传统民谣音乐、凯尔特音乐、福音音乐及古时音乐。
最早期的乡村音乐在内容上主要表现除了劳动生活之外，厌恶孤寂的流浪生活，向往温暖、安宁的家园，歌唱甜蜜的爱情以及失恋的痛苦等都有。
在后期发展与演变中，乡村音乐的内容发生了很大的变化。
乡村音乐的特点是曲调简单，节奏平稳，带有叙事性，具有较浓的乡土气息。
多为歌谣体、二部曲式或三部曲式。
旋律流畅，朗朗上口，传唱性较强。
在唱法上，由于乡村音乐是从美国民间音乐发展而来的，带有浓郁的民间音乐色彩，较多地运用民间本嗓的音色来演唱，并带有浓重的鼻音。
在演唱形式上，乡村音乐以独唱和有声部的小合唱为主。
在乐器上，早期乡村音乐主要以吉他、班卓琴和小提琴为主要伴奏。
随着乡村音乐的发展，在现代乡村音乐中，乐队的配置发生了变化，乐器以电吉他、电贝司、鼓、键盘为主，再加入特色的民间乐器。
如班卓琴、曼陀林、夏威夷吉他等。
乡村音乐从农村走向世界并在世界流行乐坛占有重要的位置是经过了一段曲折发展的道路的。
四、五十年代，乡村音乐来到大的城市，受其它乐队的影响，加进了钢琴及其它乐器和电声扩音，那时人们对这种音乐叫"纳什维尔"。
由美国国家录音艺术学院举办的"格莱美奖"是其中最高奖项。
从它的发展历程上看，它经历了早期乡村音乐、山地音乐、西部摇摆；20世纪40年代的蓝草音乐、纳什维尔之声；五六十年代的乡村摇滚、乡村民谣；七八十年代的新传统主义音乐、新乡村音乐以及90年代的乡村音乐等不同时期、不同风格的演变历程。
二、乡村音乐不同时期的音乐形式
（一）早期的乡村音乐
最初的乡村音乐只是作为自娱节目在家庭、教堂以及乡村聚会时表演。
后来到了20 世纪20年代，由于新闻媒体和商界的介入，情况发生了变化。
1925 年，南方田纳西州的纳什维尔建立了广播电台，乡村音乐得到登台亮相的机会。
第一个上场的歌手罗杰斯共录了30 首乡村歌曲。
他运用独特的山区民间唱法，使歌声在真假声区来来回回的转换中显得那么的悠扬动听，人们开始纷纷模仿他的演唱，后来，罗杰斯被人们誉为“现代乡村音乐之父”。
（二）牛仔音乐
牛仔音乐来源于美国人对大西部的迷醉，这还体现在好莱坞的电影里。
乡下人现在变成了打扮漂亮、精神抖擞的牛仔男孩和牛仔女郎唱着来自乡间的浪漫歌
曲。
展示着孤独大草原中的浪漫景象。
西部片中总会拍一个自由的牛仔在一天的辛劳后围着篝火旁唱歌，追逐着长途汽车的情景。
这干干净净的扮相被许多音乐人采用，象Gene Autry，Roy Rogers和The Sons of the Pioneers，这使乡村音乐越来越受到人们的欢迎。

乡村音乐这个原先的“下里巴人”逐渐变成了“阳春白雪”进入到了美国的上层社会。

（五）酒吧音乐
酒吧音乐是乡村音乐中最富有活力的，也是变化最多的一支音乐形式。
酒吧音乐是一种自由进行的、很喧闹的音乐形式，产生于战后的南方酒吧。
这个时期，乡村音乐的聚集场所由公开社交场所转移到了酒吧。
乡村音乐进入酒吧后，不得不在歌词和演唱风格上做出相应的变化。
过时的老歌难以在这种氛围中生存。
社会地位的变化和随之而产生的种种问题是这些农民出身的工人所关心的。
锁不住情人的心、难以维持的婚姻、及时行乐、借酒浇愁等，常成为酒吧歌曲的主题。
（六）新乡村音乐
一种用来广义上描述80年代中期回归根源的乡村音乐的形式。
但加入了电吉他和鼓，使这种乡村音乐更接近摇滚流行乐。
Garth Brooks，Brooks&Dunn，Shania Twain和LeAnn Rimes等成堆的艺人都使名列于这一目录之下。
它并不采纳小提琴、木吉他等乐器，这使其与传统乡村音乐区分开来。
