Great Britain is the official name given to the the two kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the principality of Wales. It also includes the small adjacent islands except the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Sometimes people use the shorten name Britain instead of Great Britain. The term "Great Britain" was used for the first time when England and Scotland became a single kingdom under King James VI of Scotland who became King James I of England in 1603.U nited K ingdomT he United Kingdom consists of Great Britain - the main island made up of England, Scotland and Wales - and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) was formed in on January 1 1801 and constitutes the greater part of the British Isles.

Land and People

Chapter 01 Land and PeopleI.Different Names for Britain and its PartsThe British Isles refer to two large islands and hundreds of small ones. The two large islands are Great Britain and Ireland.Britain, which is the larger of the two islands, forms the United Kingdom together with Northern Ireland. So the official name of the United Kingdom is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland(大不列颠和北爱尔兰联合王国).This mouthful name is often shortened as Britain, the United Kingdom or U.K, and its capital is London. The smaller island on the British Isles forms the Republic of Ireland, which has been an independent republic since 1949, and its capital is Dublin. There are three political divisions on the island of Great Britain:England, Scotland and Wales.England is the largest, most populous and generally speaking the richest section. So people tend to use "England" and "English" when they mean "Britain" and "British".Britain, which used to be a large empire with one fourth of the world's people and one fourth of the world's land areas, declined as a result of the two world wars.In 1931 the British empire was replaced by the British Common Wealth(英联邦).The Commonwealthis a free association of independent countries that were once colonies of Britain.Member nations are joined together economically and have certain trading arrangements. The Commonwealth has no special powers.II.Geographical FeaturesBritain is an island country. It is surrounded by the sea.It lies in the north Atlantic Ocean off the north coast of Europe.Britain is separated from the rest of Europe by the English Channel in the south and North Sea in the east. The English Channel between England and France is quite narrow and the narrowest part is called the Straits of Dover, which is only 33 km across. In 1985 the British government and the French government decided to build a channel tunnel under the Straits of Dover so that the two countries could be connected together. After eight years of hard work this channel, which is called "Chunnel", was open to traffic in May 1994.The Chunnel facilitates(促进) commercial, social, and cultural exchange between Great Britain and the Continent to an unprecedented degree. The north and west of Britain are mainly highlands. The east and southeast are mostly lowlands.England occupies the largest, being situated in the southern part of Britain with Wales to its west and Scotland to its north. The Pennines, which are a range of hills running from North Midlands to the Scottish border, are the principal mountain chain. The highest peak of England is Scafell, in the Lake District in north-west England. There are three natural zones: the Highlands in the north, the central Lowlands, and the southern Uplands (苏格兰从地理上被分为三部分:北部的高地,中部低地和南部高原).Ben Nevis (1343m), the highest mountain in Britain is located in Scotland.Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland.Wales is in the west of Great Britain.Snowdonia in the northwest is the highest mountain in Wales. The capital of Wales is Cardiff.Ⅲ.Rivers and LakesIn Britain, rivers do not freeze in winter. They play a very important role in the country's economy. The longest river is the Severn Rive r which is only 338 km long. The second largest and most important river in Britain is the Thames River (336km).Oxford is also on the Thames, in which the boat racing between the Oxford University and Cambridge University is world famous.River Clyde is the most important river in Scotland. There are many lakes in Britain especially in northern Scotland. The largest lake in Britain is the Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland, which covers an area of 396 square kilometers. The Lake District, which is in north-west England and North Wales, is one of the popular tourist attractions in Britain. It is well known for its wild and beautifulscenery and 15 lakes. It was also the home of the Lake poets(湖畔派诗人) William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey of the 19th century Britain.IV.ClimateThough it seems that people are always complaining about the weather in Britain because it is rainy and so changeable and unpredictable, the climate in Britain is in fact a favorable one.It has a favorable maritime climate(海洋性气候)-winters are mild, not too cold and summers are cool, not too hot, and it has a steady reliable rainfall throughout the whole year.Three Factors that Influence the Climate:There are three factors that influence the climate in Britain: (1)The surrounding waters that balances the seasonal differences by heating up the land in winter and cooling it off in summer.(2)The prevailing south-west winds which blow over the country all the year round bring warm and wet air in winter and keeping the temperature moderate.(3)The North Atlantic Drift(北大西洋暖流), which is a warm current, passing the western coast of the British Isles.Since Britain's climate is of the maritime type, it is characterized by cool temperatures, frequent cloudy days and rainstorms. It changes from day to day, and this makes it difficult to forecast.Even the most reliable of the English weather experts find it hard to give a correct and reliable weather forecast.Day may break as a fine spring morning; an hour later black clouds may come from nowhere and bring a heavy rain.At midday it may be as cold as winter. Then in the later afternoon the sky will be clear and sunny. The uncertainty about the weather has had a definite effect upon the Englishman's character. It tends to make him cautious. For example, you may laugh when you see an Englishman going out on a brilliantly sunny morning wearing a rain coat and carrying an umbrella.Soon, you will realize that your laughing is too soon to be reasonable. The British people are sensitive to privacy. They don't like to talk of personal affairs such as money, wage, age, or wealth, but they are fond of discussing the weather.Sometimes they even argue heatedly over what the weather is going to be like.Perhaps it is nothing more than a habit. But this habit has something to do with the changeability of the English weather, for people generally show great interest in what is uncertain.Britain has a steady reliable rainfall throughout the whole year. The average annual rainfall in Britain is over 1000mm.Much of the rain comes down in drizzle(毛毛细雨).It takes a lot of time for so much rain to come down.As a result, more than half of the days of the year are rainy days.In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre(夏洛蒂·勃朗特的《简·爱》), we find: "It was a cold winter. The wind had brought dark clouds and heavy rain." This shows England has much rainfall even in winter.Generally speaking, as a result of the rainfall distribution in Britain there is a water surplus in the north and west, and a water deficit in the south and east.V.The PeopleThe United Kingdom has a population of 59.6 million (2001), with an average population density of 244 persons per square kilometer.People in Britain are unevenly distributed.90% of the population is urban and only 10% is rural, i.e.most people live in the cities and towns and only a few live in the country. There is a great concentration of population in England. The English are Anglo-Saxons(盎格鲁撒克逊人), but the Scots, Welsh and Irish are Celts(凯尔特人).The Celts came to Britain after 700 ter they were conquered by the Romans.During the fifth century when the Roman Empire fell, the Germanic Angles and Saxons invaded and conquered Britain. The Germanic conquerors give England its name "Angle" land.It was from the union of Norman conquerors and the defeated Anglo-Saxons that the English people and English language were born.(正是由于诺曼征服者和被打败的盎格鲁撒克逊人的结合,才产生了英国人和英语。

英国的官方全称是the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern IrelandUnited Kingdom 常被用于政府会议和外交事务中,然而人们日常使用的Britain British 却是使用错误的术语,不能完整的指代一个拥有四个独立行政区划的联盟:英格兰England苏格兰Scotland威尔士Wales 北爱尔兰Northern Ireland。
