Those who consume that capital must also conserve it so that they will continue to enjoy it towards the end of the specified period. This means thatwe must preserve all our resources as we consume them so that human beings inthe future can enjoy them as well. To achieve this, we must regenerate our resources at a rate that is equal to or faster than our consumption.Social capital is an important aspect of sustainability because it is through communities and civil societies that humankind can easily and inexpensively work together. Without proper levels of social capital, it can easily deplete and violence as well as mistrustcantake over. Whenthathappens, societies andeverythingelsethat depends on them will be destroyed. Through proper maintenance of and adherencetolaws, rules, andvalues thatsocieties havedevelopedfor thecommongood, social sustainability can be achieved.Environmental sustainability is important because it involves natural resources that humanbeings need for economic or manufactured capital. Materials takenfromnature are usedfor solutions that address humanneeds. If nature is depletedfaster than it can regenerate, human beings will be left without raw materials.Furthermore,environmental sustainability also involves ensuring that waste emissions areatvolumes thatnaturecanhandle. 科技英语翻译与功能对等理论论文摘要：风格层面的功能对等主要体现在科技英语的语篇是否突出了层次的清晰、构思的严谨、措辞的简洁以及重点表达的思想等四个方面的特点，这四个特点也是科技英语翻译在翻译过程中应该遵循的基本原则和重要规范。
一、功能等理论概述功能对等理论是美国语言学家和翻译家尤金·奈达在1964年出版的《翻译科学初探》中提出来的，他提出了“形式对等”和“动态对等”两个翻译概念，其中“形式对等”是指翻译的过程中将原文的含义和特征原封不动地进行直译的翻译，或者接复制至目的文本中；而“动态对等”是翻译中用最贴切的对等语再现原来的信息，达到从语义到语体的过程。
奈达认为“形式对等”与“动态对等”的最大区别在于翻译的接受语所达到的效果，他对“动态对等”做了强调，并在此基础上提出了具有影响力的功能对等，并根据对等的程度对功能对等做了不同层次的划分，属于最高层次的功能对等是读者通过阅读译文所体会到的感想与原文的读者读到原文时所感受到的体会是一致的，这是最理想的翻译的境界。
最低层次的功能对等是实现译文读者的对原文的想象，即译文读者通过阅读译文能够想象到原文读者对原文欣赏时的心理体验，这是阅读译文最基本的要求。
功能对等理论的核心是译文读者对译文的反映，直译与意译一直是存在于翻译中具有争论的两个方面，其争论的焦点在于译文与原文之间的关系，直译要求要尊重原文，准确地翻译原文；而意译要求将原文理解后以便于读者接受的语言翻译出来。
由于原文的读者与译文的读者在接受信息方面存在一定的差异，因此，要达到原文与译文之间的真正对等是不可能的，奈达的对等功能强调的是相对意义的对等，在翻译的实践中要以语言的差异进行灵活地翻译，可以和原文有一定的出入，但是，翻译的本质还是对文本信息内涵的传递，通过相对的对等，可以避免翻译过程中一些过分关注原文而造成译文难以理解的缺陷。
二、科技英语特点及分类科技英语是指在自然科学以及工程技术方面所使用的英语，包括涉及的教科书、著作以及论文和报告等，从广义上来讲，科技英语就是所有与科学有关的英语。

摘要:文章主要就科技英语的特征、科技英语翻译的标准和方法进行了探讨,说明了加强科技英语翻译研究和探索的日益重要性。
旨在提醒科技翻译者在实践基础上加强理论研究,以便更好更准确地做好翻译工作。

随着国际学术交流的日益广泛,科技英语已经受到普遍的重视,掌握科技英语的翻译技巧是非常必要的。
科技英语 (English for Science and Technolgy ,简称EST)作为一种重要的英语文体,与非科技英语文体相比,具有词义多、长句多、被动句多、词性转换多、非谓语动词多、专业性强等特点,这些特点都是由科技文献的内容所决定的。
因此,科技英语的翻译也有别于其他英语文体的翻译。
一、首先要拥有一本好的科技词典
学习普通英语几年以后，你大约掌握几千个单词的词汇量，这时你就会发现英语拥有极其丰富多彩的词汇，但在科技文章中，又会对大量的专业词汇和术语而头疼。
有些词晦涩难懂，大而长，看起来吓人，如posttention（后张拉力），prefabricate（预制），意义比较简单，只要查一下词典就行。
有些词在文章中起着举足轻重的作用,所以翻译时选择在具体语言环境中最恰当。
一本好的科技词典可以成为你的良师益友，为此笔者推荐《英汉道路词典》《汉英科技大词典》两本较好的词典。
二、在翻译时采用增词法和词序处理法
1.根据句法上的需要:由于英汉两种语言表达方式存在差别，在英语中需要省略的成分而在汉语中需要补出才能符合汉语的习惯。
例如：在翻译案例中增词现象“与普通的线波相比，微波有较高的频率，从而被用于跨远距离定期发送成千上万的电话和的电视节目“，比原文中增添了“与普通的线波相比”“从而被”等词，来更好的表达原文。
2.根据意义上的需要:(1)英语复数名词的增译：复数名词前后增译“许多”、“一些”等，使其复数意义更明确；（2）英语中表示动作名词的增译：翻译时可根据上下文语境，补充一些表示动作意义的名词：“作用”、“现象”、“方案”等；（3）在英语名词或动名词前后增译汉语动词：（4）增译解说性词：英语中常因惯用法或上下文关系。
省去了不影响理解全句意义的词句。
为了使译文清晰起见，翻译时必须增译一些词。
3.词序处理法英汉两种语言的词序规则基本相同,但也存在着某些差别。
不同的英语句子,在翻译中的词序处理方式也常常不同。
例如:” are used routinely in sending thousands of telephone calls and television programs across long distances从远距离发送成千上万的电话和电视节目。
这里将“across long distance”(从远距离)改序翻译为“发送成千上万电话和电视节目”之前较为合理。
三．句型的使用
1.非限定动词的应用和大量使用后置定语如前所述,科技文章要求行文简练,结构紧凑,往往使用分词短语代替定语从句或状语从句;使用分词独立结构代替状语从句或并列分句;使用不定式短语代替各种从句;介词+动名词短语代替定语从句或状语从句。
这样既可缩短句子,又比较醒目。
2.大量使用常用句型科技文章中经常使用若干特定的句型,从而形成科技文体区别
于其他文体标志。
例如It—that—结构句型;被动态结构句型;分词短语结构句型;省略句结构句型等。
例如:It is evident that awell lubricated bearing turns more easily than a dry one. 显然,润滑好的轴承,比不润滑的轴承容易转动。
3.定语从句
Communications satellites make use of technology that has been available for some time。
通讯卫星使用的技术已经被使用了一段时间了
The molecules exert forces upon each other, which depend upon the distance between them.
分子相互间都存在着力的作用，该力的大小取决于它们之间的距离。
Very wonderful changes in matter take place before our eyes every day to which we pay little attention.
(定语从句to which we pay little attention 修饰的是changes,这是一种分隔定语从句。
)
我们几乎没有注意的很奇异的物质变化每天都在眼前发生。
To make an atomic bomb we have to use uranium 235, in which all the atoms are available for fission.
制造原子弹，我们必须用铀235，因为轴的所有原子都会裂变。
四. 科技英语中大量使用被动语态
被动语态在普通英语中是最基本的语法，简单易学。
科技英语中大量使用被动语态，不是为了追求文章语言的艺术美，而是为了讲求叙述文章的客观，语言简洁，结构严谨，和普通英语文章有着显著不同，加深读者对所叙述事物的深刻印象，屏弃不必要的东西。
例如：
1. Most primary highways are built and cared for by state governments. 大部分主要的公路都是由联邦政府建造和管理。
这里…are built and cared for 就是被动语态
2. The proportion of the various ingredients which go into concrete , the way it is mixed , and even the water which is used are very important to the finished material.
制作混凝土所用的各种配料的比例，搅拌的方法，乃至所用的水，对成品材料来说都是十分重要的。
此句有两处是被动语态。
五、借助于电脑中的各种翻译软件，结合上下文语境来翻译科技英语能达到事半功倍的效果
我们一般都用中英文词典来查询生词，这样不但需要经常把词典带在身边，而且在查询翻译生词的时候也会花费很多的时间。
现在随着计算机技术迅速发展，网络技术的广泛普及，很多英文翻译软件可以在网络上轻松找到。
而我们利用便利的网络资源很快就可以获取我们要查询翻译的英文单词，当然我们查询词汇的时候会得到很多不同的翻译结果，这时就需要我们结合上下文的语境来联系的翻译我们的文章，最终得到准确的翻译结果。
我现在使用的查询软件是金山词霸2007，我在遇到很多生僻的专业词汇时就使用这些相关的翻译软件来帮我排忧解难。
通过使用英文翻译软件可以使我们轻松的找到自己想查询的英文单词，使我们方便快捷的翻译出那些让我们以前花很大力气才能翻译出来的专业英语词汇，使我们的英文翻译工作达到事半功倍的效果。
