Key to Intensive Reading (II) Texts

Unit 1 Text I My Father’s Shadow

P5 Text Comprehension

I. Decide which of the following best states the author's purpose of writing.

A. RIGHT.

B. WRONG. Disagreement and estrangement is only part of the story, which is intended for the more important part – the removal of this estrangement by the old man's profound affection for his grandchild.

C. WRONG. It is not the author's endeavor, but the biological bond between her father and her son that settled the problem.

II. Judge, according to the text, whether the following statements are true or false.

1. T.

2. F. The author's marriage was only one of the many incidents that gradually led to the tension between her and her father.

3. F. Refer to Paragraph 12. In fact, they both wanted to mend the breach, but both of them were too proud to compromise, and they did not know how to mend it.

4. F. Refer to Paragraph 8.

5. T. Refer to the last two paragraphs.

III. Answer the following questions.

1. The answer to this question lies in Paragraphs 2 and 3. The author differs drastically from her father in their preferences and choices, but they are similar in that they are both "bullheaded". It is this bullheadedness that intensifies their disagreement and sets them apart.

2. Refer to Paragraph 4. The father expressed his disapproval of his daughter with silence never speaking to his daughter over the phone; the daughter responded in the same way to show her uncompromising character.

3. Refer to Paragraphs 5 and 6. The author has a mixed feeling about the upcoming meeting with her father. This feeling is indicated by her recall of the paternal love she enjoyed when she was a child, and her uncertainty about her father's reaction – "If he disapproved of Timmy, as he had of me ...

4. Refer to Paragraphs 11 and 12. When she saw the scene, the author realized that her father had accepted her son. It is his way of mending his relationship with his daughter reaching for her over the "bridge" of his grandson.

5. The father's image is portrayed from two perspectives. One is his sternness – he put too many demands on his daughter and required absolute obedience from her, as many other Chinese fathers did; the other is his love for his daughter and his grandson.

IV. Explain in your own words the following sentences taken from the text.

1. It was quite possible that the physical separation and emotional breach between us would further widen and eventually separate us forever.

2. My parental love for my newborn baby aroused in me a strong wish to go back to my parents on the islands. Here the author seems to suggest that she has come to appreciate her father's love for her.

3. My father's acceptance of his half-Chinese grandson showed that he had become tolerant of

ethnic differences and no longer insisted that all his family members should look alike.

P5 Structural analysis of the text

The main idea of each part:

The first part (Paragraph 1 ) gives the background information of the story –the author's relationship with her father and her feeling about her return to Hawaii.

The second part (Paragraphs 2-4) is a flashback about the clashes between the author and her father.

The third part (Paragraphs 5 -6) is a transition. The author recalls her father's affection for her in her childhood and shows her uncertainty about the forthcoming reunion.

The fourth part (Paragraphs 7- 13 ) describes the reunion – the initial uncertain moment, the father's affection for his grandchild l and ease of the tension between the father and the daughter.

The last part (Paragraphs 14 -15) is the conclusion, the ending of the story about how family ties work in removal of disagreement between family members.

P12 Listening exercises

TRANSCRIPT

Child Discipline

Interviewer: It is generally thought that before the 1960s, parents were much stricter with children.

But since then, the strictness has gradually started to give way to what is sometimes

called the "permissive society", which allows people a great deal of freedom.

Nowadays many people have a different attitude to parenting. One popular view is

that children should be talked to and listened to, and they should be more involved in

family decision. In families like this, parents explain house rules instead of imposing

them on the child. Hitting children is now frowned upon in most families.

Today we have invited six teenagers here. They are Thomas, Chris, Joanne, Michael, Ruth and John. They are going to talk about their views on discipline within

the family.

Thomas: Discipline needs to be there in a certain amount but too much of it can be a bad thing,

I think, and I certainly do get too much of it occasionally. My father was extremely

strict with me when I was a little boy. All my buddies say I need to be more assertive.

But I just can't. Whenever I did something wrong, even if it was only a very trivial

one, my father would pull my ear and it hurt so much. Yeah, my left ear is still bigger,

look.

Chris: I wouldn't be as strict as my dad was, definitely not, coz I don't think that works. That only makes you rebel. My mum is much nicer. She never went out to work alter I was

born, so we got a lot of time hanging around. I think we kind of have a closeness that

it isn't possible to have if your mother is not there all the time. My mother is more

than a mother to me, she is also one of my friends. I think she can understand much

better than my father.

Joanne: My mother was a working mother. Well, seeing as she has worked all my life, I know nothing different, so I don't know what it is like to have a non-working mother. I

suppose it's made me more independent and I've had to occasionally cook. Un like

many of my friends I wash up the dishes of an evening and I help prepare a meal. I

think I have more freedom than my other friends and I also feel that I grow faster than

them.

Michael: Well, me and my parents, we never used to get on, we used to fight all the time. We never, well, especially with my dad, we never liked one another. In a way with my

dad that's caused me, you know to be, not to do as I was told, you know to make me

do things they didn't want me to do just to spite them.

Ruth: My mom doesn't let me watch that much TV after school, which is really annoying because most of my friends get to watch for about two hours a day but I only get to

watch for one hour. I sometimes don't –I mean I think that's really unfair so

sometimes I just watch for two hours anyway. And when my mom is not around, you

would let me go out until ten o'clock and they would never ask where I went. I think

my parents should have, you now, maybe at least showed an interest as to where I was

going. They never even asked where I was going and they gave me a lot of free time,

and I think that they, they felt that this was a thing that was being a good parent. But I

think that teenagers are very native, and I think I could have used a little more

direction from them.

Key to listening exercises

A.

B.

Thomas: Discipline needs to be there in a certain amount but too much of it can be a bad thing.

Chris: She would definitely not be as strict as her father because that only makes one rebel.

But her mother is much nicer. Her mother is more than a mother to her but also one

of her friends. Her mother can understand her much better than her father. Joanne: Her mother was a working mother, so she is more independent and has more freedom than her friends. And she feels that she grows faster than her friends, too. Michael: He and his parents never used to get on. That kind of unfriendly relationship has caused him not to do as he was told, but do things that his parents didn't want him to

do just to spite them.

Ruth: She feels really annoyed because her mother doesn't let her watch that much TV after school because most of her friends get to watch for about two hours a day but she

only get to watch for one hour. She thinks that is really unfair.

John: His parents gave him a lot of free time. But he thinks that good parents should at least show an interest as to where their kid's going. Teenagers are very naive, and they

need more direction from their parents.
