其使用的关系代词一般是which,whom或whose,在句中既可以引导限制性定语从句,也可以引导非限制性定语从句。
在学习时我们要注意以下几点:(1)关系代词的选用在介词后作宾语的关系代词一般只有which,whose和whom。
如果先行词是物,引导词用which;如果先行词是人,则引导词用whom;whose适用于两者。
This is the ship by which I went to Shanghai.这是我去上海时所乘坐的船。
This is the student for whom I bought the book.这是我给买书的那个学生。
The boss in whose firm I worked for 10 years retired yesterday.我供职十年的那家公司的老板昨天退休了。
(2)介词的选用确定“介词+关系代词”中介词的方法主要有以下四种:①根据定语从句中的谓语动词或形容词来选用The fellow to whom I spoke made no answer at first.和我说话的那个人起先没有回答。

二.语法突破:介词/ 短语介词+ 关系代词的定语从句1. 直接位于介词或短语介词之后的关系代词只能是which,whom或whose+名词构成。
例:1.The girl with whom I went to the concert is my sister.2.The service about which the customers complain a lot should be improved.3.He is the writer from whose novel I learned a lot in those days.4.One day we climbed up the hill, on top of which we saw a temple in the distance.5.Look at the photo. This is Mr. Green, in front of whom sit three students.6.They are the villagers, in whose village I taught ten years ago.2. 直接位于介词后面的关系代词不能省略,但如果介词不位于关系代词之前时,关系代词可省略。
例:1.The woman (who/that/whom) I talked to just now is a doctor.2.The service (which/ that) the customers complain about a lot should be improved.3. 关系副词when, where, why 可以相应地转化为:介词+which结构。
例:1.The school where she teaches stands by the river. =The school in which she teaches stands by the river.2.Do you remember the year when our band came into being?=Do you remember the year in which our band came into being?3.No one knew the reason why she was absent from class.=No one knew the reason for which she was absent from class.4. 有一些动词短语中的介词是固定搭配,不可以拆开,该介词不可以提前:例:This is the disabled woman whom the girl is looking after.5. 不定代词+of+ which/ whom 引导的定语从句可转化为of+ which/ whom+ 不定代词结构;可用的不定代词有some, any, none, both, all, many, a few, few, a little, little, either, neither, one, 等等。

例:1.She lives in a house whose windows open to the south.= She lives in a house the windows of which(of which the windows) open to the south.2.This is the student whose handwriting is excellent.= This is the student the handwriting of whom (of whom the handwriting) is excellent.7. 由介词+关系代词引导的定语从句,当主从句主语一致时,定语从句可缩略为:介词+ which/whom+ to do 结构。
1.She bought a nice box in which to put all her necklaces.= She bought a nice box to put all her necklaces in.2.I want to find a partner with whom to do this experiment.= I want to find a partner to do this experiment with.8.有些介词后可以接关系副词,主要取决于介词及句子意思。
例:1.He stood by the window, from where he could see the beautiful view in the distance.2.She came to the city in 1982, since when she has worked in a company in the city.3.It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where itbegins to where it ends.(必修1. Unit 3.)句意:首先想到沿湄公河从源头到终点骑车旅游的是我的姐姐。
