Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.Passage 1.When you think of the tremendous technological progress we have made,it's amazing how little we have developed in other respects. We may speak contemptuously of the poor old Romans because they relished the orgies of slaughter that went on in their arenas. We may despise them because they mistook these goings - on for entertainment. We may forgive them condescendingly because they lived 2000 years ago and obviously knew no better. But are our feelings of superiority really justified? Are we any less blood - thirsty? Why do boxing matches, for instance, attract such universal interest? Don't the spectators who attend them hope they will see some violence? Human beings remain as blood - thirsty as ever they were. The only difference between ourselves and the Romans is that while they were honest enough to admit that they enjoyed watching hungry lions tearing people apart and eating them alive, we find all sorts of sophisticatedarguments to defend sports which should have been banned long ago; sports which are quite as barbarous as, say, public hangings or bear - baiting. It really is incredible that in this day and age we should still allow hunting or bull - fighting, that we should be prepared to sit back and watch two men batter each other to pulp in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing and bursting into flames. Let us not deceive ourselves. Any talk of 'the sporting spirit' is sheer hypocrisy. People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. A world heavyweight championship match, for example, can generate two or three million dollars from ticket sales alone. Why should we ban violent sports if people enjoy them so much? You may well ask. The answer is simple: they are uncivilized. For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually and emotionally - admittedly with little success. But at least we no longer tolerate the sight of madmen cooped up in cages, or public floggings of any kind. There are no longer any stocks in which to lock up offenders. Prisons are no longer the grim forbidding places they used to be. We have taken a great many steps forward in the humanizing of our civilization. Let us take one more. Let us ban violent sports. Let us no longer be content to set back and watch human beings being beaten, kicked, and punched, or stabbed to death in the name of sport. Let us have no more of this.1. The author mentions the poor old Romans to ______.A. compare the old Romans with today's people.B. show contempt for the old Romans.C. introduce the topic of blood - thirstiness.D. show how cruel the old Romans were.2. The main idea of this passage is that ______.A. violent sports should be banned.B. people are willing to pay vast sums to see violence.C. to compare two different attitudes towards violent sports.D. people are blood - thirsty in sports.3. The author believes that modern people are ______.A. more blood - thirsty than the Romans.B. not as blood - thirsty as the Romans.C. as blood - thirsty as the Romans.D. less blood - thirsty than the Romans.4. The author's attitude towards violent sports is ______.A. positive.B. negative.C. indifferent.D. not clear.5. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. Boxing matches attract universal interest.B. There are sophisticated arguments to defend violent sports.C. The sporting spirit is sheer hypocrisy.D. People take part in violent sports because they enjoy them.Passage 2.A new study shows that fat people in the United States suffer direct economic and social effects because of their size. The findings are from an 8 - year study of about 100,000 people. The people studied were between the ages of 16 and 24 when the research began. The researchers who carried out the study say they consider the people fat if they are in the top 5% of the measurement in which weight is related to height. For example, fat women in the study were about 160 centimeters tall and weighed about 90 kilograms. Fat men in the study were about 175 centimeters tall and weighed about 100 kilograms. The researchers say that more than 1,000,000 Americans are that fat. The researchers found that fat young women were less likely to get married and they earned about 6,700 less a year than other women. The study showed fat young men had lower incomes, too. They earned about 5,000 less a year than other men.The researchers say that people, employers, and health insurers (保险公司) all discriminate against fat people. The researchers say that employers are less likely to hire fat people. Health insurers charge more for health insurance to fat people than to other people. The study also shows that fat people have more health problems than other people. However, the researchers say that the economic and social effects of being fat are much greater than the health problems. But the researchers say they do not know the cause of these economic and social effects. They say more research is needed.1.
