Unit 4 Wildlife protection Period 2 Reading课后阅读训练Ⅰ. 阅读理解ACan we give a hand to those endangered animals?Yes, we may only do a littlebit, but together our small actions add up to a lot.1. Protect wildlife habitatPerhaps the greatest threat that faces many species is the widespreaddestruction of habitat. Cutting down forests, farming, and development all result in loss of wildlife habitat. In areas where rare species live, habitat destruction can quickly force a species to extinction. By protecting habitat, entire communities of animals can be protected together naturally. Parks and reserves are now all too often the only habitats that are left untouched by habitat destruction.2. Reduce the threat of invasive(入侵的)speciesThe spread of non-native species has greatly reduced native populations around the world. Invasive species compete with native species for resources(资源)and habitat. They can even prey on native species directly, forcing native species towards extinction.3. Place decals(贴花纸)on windowsIt is reported that as many as one million birds in the United States die each year because of collisions(碰撞)with windows. You can help reduce the number of collisions simply by placing decals on the windows in your home and office.4. Slow down when drivingMany native animals have to live in developed areas and this means they must move in human-living areas. One of the biggest obstacles(障碍)to them is that created by roads. Roads divide habitat and present a constant risk to any animal attempting to cross from one side to the other. So when you drive out, slow down and keep an eye out for wildlife.【语篇概述】我们能为濒危动物做点什么?本文给出了很好的建议, 我们每个人都可以为此伸出援手, 尽自己的微薄之力。

Dinosaurs died out suddenly about 65 million years ago and many animals have disappeared in the last 500 years.Step3 Reading and copyingNext we shall come to the text ABOUT DINOSAURS on page 30 to read it and copy down all the expressions into your notebook.Useful phrases from ANIMAL EXTINGCTION during the long history of the earth, live on the earth, tens of millions of years ago, came into being, eggs of twenty-five species, a rare new species, a bird-like dinosaur, climb tree, tell / learn…from…, die out, hit the earth, put…into the air, get hot, live on, know for sure, in the same way, listen to the story about…, disappear from…Step5 阅读理解People realize that, although animals may not have the same intelligence(智力)as human beings, they are smart enough to learn certain things.Dogs are extremely useful as companions for blind people. When a dog has been properly trained, he will always lead his blind master in the right direction and keep him out of danger. For example, seeing-eye dogs learn never to cross a busy road when cars are coming, even if their master ordered them to do so.Horses are also able to learn many things. Horses that are used for guard or police duty must learn never to be frightened of noises, traffic, and other disturbances. Racing horses are able to run much faster than other horses, but they are also quite high strung(易紧张). Therefore, it is necessary for those people who train them to be very patient(耐心) and understanding. The moving pictures and television can use trained animals too. Some animals, such as monkeys and foxes, are easy to film. All you have to do is make a trail in front of the camera by dragging something that smells good to the animals over the ground. Big animals, such as lions and tigers, can be photographed as they bound happily back to their families and dinner. If a movie actor is nearby, the well-trained animal will pay no attention to him. However, the audience may imagine that the actor escaped a terrible death by the skin of his teeth.1. Dogs who help blind people must learn .A. to obey all ordersB. to obey only safe ordersC. never to cross roadsD. to cross road when ordered to do so2. Race horses are hard to train because they are .A. faster than other horsesB. smaller than other horsesC. clever than other horseD. more nervous than other horses3. What does “make a trail” mean here in the last paragraph?A. place something to attract the animalB. give the animal a certain taskC. order the animal to do thingsD. follow the animal to hunt4. Lions can be photographed easily when .A. they are following a trial of something that smells good to themB. they are returning to their familiesC. they have been trained to work with other animalsD. they do not know a movie-actor is nearby5. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Animals can be useful.B. Dangerous wild animals can be trained.C. The well-trained animals can learn the difference between the unwanted people and friends.D. Animals can become interested in their tricks.Step6 Writing (Ex. 4 on page 31)Write a letter to WWF (World Wild Fund for Nature世界野生动物保护基金会)based on what you have discussed, asking them to help you save your endangered animals. All letters have a start and an ending. The language used depends on how well the writer knows the person to whom he / she is writing. (pay attention to the guidelines on your book)Sample letter to WWFDear WWF,My friend, Chen Ting, and I have been doing some research on endangered animals. We found that the habitat of polar bears is disappearing because the ice at the North Pole is getting warmer. I worry that when is disappears altogether, there will be nowhere for the polar bears to live.First, I suggest we are very careful with the energy we use. Global warming happens because we are putting too much carbon dioxide into the air. One of the ways we do this is by driving everywhere by car. So I suggest we think carefully before using our cars unnecessarily.Second, instead of using our cars we should think about traveling by bus or by train. These forms of transport are more environmentally friendly and do not put so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.Third, we can join WWF which is fighting to save the habitat of the polar bear. We can raise money to help them by making and selling cakes, selling crafts or giving talent shows and charging money for our parents to watch.I hope you will support us in our fight to save the home of the Polar Bears.Y ours sincerelyWu XiaoxingStep7.当堂检测,实战演练Let the students write it in 15 minutesStep8.合作探究,修改互评Let the students exchange their writings to correct.Step9.分类展示,教师点评The teacher choose some examples to showStep 10 反刍总结Part 4 Homework 1 完成作文和整理纠错2 preview the next period反思:。

阅读文章Conservation is the protection of things found in nature. It requires the sensible? use of all Earth's natural resources. People who care about conservation try to protect natural resources so that they will still be around in the future. Some resources are renewable. Living things, such as plants and animals, are examples of renewable resources because they can reproduce themselves. But renewable resources can still be damaged or destroyed. For example, people might catch too many of one type of fish. If not enough fish are left to reproduce, that type of fish might die out.Conservation helps people keep renewable resources in good supply. Some resources are non-renewable, which means they cannot be replaced. Fossil fuels, such as coal and oil are examples of non-renewable resources. People can conserve non-renewable resources by using them carefully. They can also look for other resources that serve the same purpose.Conservation can be hard because it may require people to give up some conveniences. For example, cars make travel easy, but they also produce a lot of air pollution. To have cleaner air, people can choose to drive less and walk more. Such changes can be hard when people have got used to a certain way of living.Money is another reason why conservation can be a challenge. For example, a timber company might be able to protect forest animals by limiting the number of trees it cuts. But the company might not be willing to do this because it will make less moneyEveryone can contribute to conservation in one way or another. People can recycle paper, glass, and other materials. Industries can limit the amount of pollution they create. Government can make laws that help to keep the air and water clean.生词积累:① conservation n.保护② sensible adj. 明智的;合理的③ non-renewable adj. 不可再生的④ recycle v. 回收利用拓展阅读[课标全国【2017·B篇]1 work with V olunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. The event was part of deforestation activities around the world.Section BThe tiger, the largest of all cats, is one of the most charming species on earth; it is also one of the most threatened. Fewer than 4,000 tigers remain in the wild. Most are in isolated forests stretching from India to south-eastern China and from the Russian Far East to Sumatra, Indonesia. This great animal is being ill-treated. Tigers are poisoned, shot and trapped, with many being killed to meet the demands of the continuing illegal wildlife trade. Hunters, traders, and poor local residents whose livelihood mainly comes from the forests are killing tigers and the natural prey1 on which they live. While poaching2 for trade con tinues to menace tigers’ survival, perhaps the greatest long-term threats are the loss of habitat and the decrease of their natural prey. Large commercial plantations3 have replaced a lot of tiger habitat in several countries. The WWF’s tiger conservation strategy and action plan names seven areas where the chances of long-term tiger conservation are best, and four additional areas where conservation opportunities are good. In each of these areas, the WWF aims to establish and manage effective tiger conservation, reduce the poaching of tigers and their prey, get rid of the trade in tiger parts and products, and encourage local communities to support tiger conservation.Notes:1. prey n. 被捕食的动物;猎物2. poach v. )Step3. Dealing with two passagesA①The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(栖息地).②It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.③Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.1) The analysis of passage AparagraphKey wordsMain ideawho/what how①African elephantecosystemimportanceThe African elephant is of great importance toAfrican ecosystem.②elephant‟s desirefor fooddisturberbuilderThe elephant‟s great desire for food makes theelephant a disturber of the environment and a builderof its habitat.③rainforestsTake forexmpleTake rainforests for example to explain the reason.(设计思想: 学生通过小组合作的方式找出关键词并总结出各个段落大意)2) Exercise.1 . They are trying to save the animal that face extinction. (设计思想:巩固拓宽学生词汇量)B①With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species. That‟s a move which is similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the p ast five years in a project called “Noah‟s Ark”.②Noah‟s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(液氮). If certain species should become extinct(灭绝), Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professo r in Texas A & M‟s College of V eterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.③It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.④This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant(移植) the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure (程序) could take from three to five years to complete. “The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major p roblem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it‟s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first -ever attempt at cloning a dog.1).The analysis of passage BparagraphKey words Main ideawho/what how①Chinaclone &save similarChina is trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species and it is a move similar to a project called “Noah ‟s Ark ”.② Noah ‟s Ark aim at &storeNoah ‟s Ark is aiming at collecting eggs, embryos, semen and DNA of endangered animals and store them③pandain danger of becoming extinctPanda in China is in danger of becoming extinct. ④we: China andNoah ‟s ArksaveChina and Noah ‟s Ark are both trying to save animal that face extinction.(设计思想: 学生通过小组合作的方式找出关键词并总结出各个段落大意)2) Exercise.2. What does the text mainly talk about______________.DArthur Bonner works with the Palos V erdes blue butterfly(蝴蝶), once thought to have died out. Today the butterfly is coming back — thanks to him. But years ago if you‟d told him this was what he‟d be doing someday, he would have laughed, “You‟re crazy.” As a boy, he used to be “a little toughguy on the streets”. At age thirteen, he was caught by police stealing. At eighteen, he landed in prison for shooting a man.“I knew it had hurt my mom,” Bonner said after he got out of prison. “So I told myself I would not put my mom through that pain again.”One day he met Professor Mattoni, who was working to rebuild the habitat(栖息地) for an endangered butterfly called El Segundo blue.“I saw the sign …Butterfly Habitat‟ and asked, …How can you have a habitat when the butterflies can just fly away?‟” Bonner recalls. “Dr. Mattoni laughed and handed me a magnifying glass (放大镜), …Look at the leaves.‟ I could see all these caterpillars(蝴蝶的幼虫) on the plant. Dr Mattoni explained, …Without the plant, there are no butterflies.‟”Weeks later, Bonner received a call from Dr. Mattoni, who told him there was a butterfly needed help. That was how he met the Palos Verdes blue. Since t hen he‟s been working for four years to help bring the butterfly back. He grows astragalus, the only plant the butterfly eats. He collects butterflies and brings them into a lab to lay eggs. Then he puts new butterflies into the habitat. The butterfly‟s po pulation, once almost zero, is now up to 900. For their work, Bonner and Dr. Mattoni received lots of awards. But for Bonner, he earned something more: he turned his life around. For six years now Bonner has kept his promise to stay out of prison. While he‟s bringing back the Palos Verdes blue, the butterfly has helped bring him back, too.4.
