Unit 2 English around the world阅读理解AOne Canada, Two LanguagesCanada is one of the few nations in the world to have two official languages: English and French. There are 10 provinces in the country but only one of these---Quebec is known as "French Canada". This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventurers discovered the rest.Canada left the British empire (帝国) in 1867 to become an independent country, and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since. Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country. Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare. The same goes for traffic signs and menus. For example, outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you'll see traffic signs in French. In restaurants, it's almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland (中心地带) of French Canada. However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels (标签) and instructions in both languages. In Canada's English speaking provinces, official bilingualism (双语) means that students can choose to complete a special French language course. Under this program, they are taught most of their subjects in French. If a student begins the course in kindergarten (幼儿园) or Grade One, it is likely that all their lessons will be in French. However, if they start at junior high school,25 percent of the teaching will continue to be in English.1. How many provinces are there in Canada?A. Ten.B. Nine.C. Eleven.D. Two.2. Which country controlled Canada before its independence?A. France.B. Britain.C. America.D. Germany.3. Which of the following sentences is right?A. English is the only official language, though French is also spoken there.B. The two national television networks broadcast both in English and French.C. All products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels and instructions in bothEnglish and French.D. The lessons in kindergarten or Grade One are likely to be only in English.BWhen it comes to learning a foreign language, many people wonder if they will be able to memorize enough vocabulary. But this question never happens about their mother tongue, and yet, it was a foreign language once. However, among all the questions that new parents ask, no doctor has ever heard: Will my baby be able to learn my language? Be honest. Do you know all the words of your mother tongue? The answer is: no. New words, and new ways of using old words, appear every day. Twentyyears ago, who would have been able to understand a sentence like this: Click here to download your digital book? Nobody. You never stop learning new vocabulary and you never know how long you will need it.Sometimes, you have the word on the tip of your tongue and it sticks there! But you do know this phenomenon (现象) and don’t think that it is because of a bad memory. You should not give this phenomenon more importance in the language you are learning than in your mother tongue. You need to learn only 2,000 or so basic words to be able to create any phrase you need. You can’t avoid (避) some work in order to learn these necessary words and all the more if you want to learn quickly. And before you consider buying into any method, be sure it is right for you. It is not wise to depend on any method based upon memotechnics (记忆术). The first words seem very easy to learn, so, you buy the course, but then you discover quickly, though too late, that a dozen words later, it is all the more difficult to learn a new word when you have also to learn the trick to memorize it.4. From the first paragraph, we know that ______.A. there is no need to know all the words of a foreign languageB. it is honest to answer no to a question you don’t knowC. a baby can know all the new words of its mother tongueD. people find it hard to memorize vocabulary of their language5. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 probably means ______.A. you have no courage to speak the wordB. you just fail to remember the wordC. you are not sure of the wordD. you daren’t open you r mouth to speak the word6. To learn a foreign language, the author advises you ______.A. to remember new words according to memotechnicsB. to keep up with new ways of using old wordsC. to learn at least 2,000 necessary wordsD. to pay more attention to your bad memory7. The passage is mainly about ______.A. using old words in a new wayB. learning new words from the contextC. finding a method to memorize vocabularyD. learning vocabulary of a foreign languageCOne of the latest trends(趋势)in American Childcare is Chinese au pairs. Au pair in Stamford, for example, has got increasing numbers of request for Chinese au pairs from zero to around 4,000 since 2004. And that’s true all across the country. “I thought it would be useful for him to learn Chinese at an early age” Joseph Stocke, the managing director of a company, says of his 2-year old son. “I would at least like to give him the chance to use the language in the future,” After only six months of being cared by 25-year-old woman from China, the boy can alreadyunderstand basic Chinese daily expressions, his dad says.Li Drake, a Chinese native raising two children in Minnesota with an American husband, had another reason for looking for an au pair from China. Complete mastery demands continued learning until the age of 10 or 12.”The popularity of au pairs from China has been strengthened by the increasing numbers of American parents who want their children to learn Chinese. It is expected that American demand for au pairs will continue to rise in the next few years. 8. I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious(有声望的) modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At 13, my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go. We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model. I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!Of course, I wasn’t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 5’9”(about 1.75metres) I could be a success. I prayed for a growth spurt (冲刺) because I could not imagine giving up my dream. I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes, $500 for a photo shoot, and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging. The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’t receive a call, I grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City. We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short. I was devastated(感到难以承受的).Years later, I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it. I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.11. What’s the main reason why the author wanted to be a model?A. She won a national contest.B. She wanted to get reputation and wealth.C. She was urged by some modeling agencies.D. She had full potential to be a successful model.12. What’s the author’s parents’ attitude toward her dream?A. Encouraging.B. Worried.C. Doubtful.D. Enthusiastic.13. What was it that made the author end her attempt to become a model?A. Her parents were strongly against it.B. She realized that it was impossible for her.C. Even a local modeling agency turned her down.D. She realized that she didn’t actually love the idea of modeling.14. The underlined phrase “The final straw” probably means ______.A. the last in a series of bad things that happen to make someone very upset, angry, etcB. the final result that she was admitted by the model companyC. the final audition given by the agencyD. the decision that she made at last not to be a model any more15. What did the author learn from her experience of struggling to be a model?A. Where there’s a will there’s a way.B. Being a model is not that easy.C. We should have our own judgment and should not just follow others.D. We might set unpractical goals but the experiences can help us grow.七选五“Why is life worth living?” If you ask this question, you will get different answers. 16 But we have put together a few reasons from different people as to why life is worth living.Learning. ADo you make money doing small jobs? If you do, you may have heard of the idea of spending only some of it, saving some of it and donating (捐赠) some to people who need it more. The head of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and his wife announced they were giving away 99% of their money from Facebook during their lives to help others! That alone is amazing considering most people donate about 3% to 5% of the money they have. It's even more amazing when you realize they're donating about $45 billion. That's $45,000,000,000!!!!Don't worry. They'll still have about $455 million to live on!They made this decision partly because they had a baby girl, Max, and thought about what kind of world they'd like her to grow up in.It must be an amazing feeling to have that kind of money spent on people in need.Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest persons in the world, so most of us will never know what that would be like. But we don't have to be super wealthy to make meaningful change.Sometimes change can come from change!Tenyearold Joey Roth from America started saving up change he found anywhere —around his house, on the street, on his way to school ... And then he started putting it in a jar (广口瓶).He even asked the tooth fairy to donate some change in his letter to her after he lost a tooth! (The tooth fairy is an imaginary person.) His collection, Jar for Change, has grown into a communitywide effort and he has raised over $10,000 all from people dropping coins into jars! The money he raises goes to help connect parents with their very sick babies.See what these people have done? You, too, can make a difference — no matter how old you are, where you live and how much you earn!语篇解读:不是一定要有很多钱才能帮助别人,我们也可以从小处做起。

BEnglish is a language particularly rich in idioms (习语), which usually don't obey logical (逻辑的) and grammatical rules. Without idioms English would lose much of its variety and humor both in speech and writing. In the old days the written language (novels, poems, plays and the Bible) was the source on which idioms were based. This was t he case up until World WarⅡ. After the war new mediums (媒介,媒体) had appeared in Englishspeaking society, there was a channel for the American way of life and the popular culture of the U.S. TV, movies and nowadays the interactive mediums have changed the English language more to the American English direction. How then does American English differ from British English in the use of idioms? There are no radical differences in actual use. The main differences are in the situations where idiomatic expressions are used. There have been many studies recently on this subject. American English adopts and creates new idioms at a much faster ratecompared to British English. Also the idioms of AmE origin (起点) tend to spread faster and further. After it has first been established in the U.S., an American idiom may soon be found in other“variants (变体)”and dialects of English. Nowadays new British idioms tend to stay on the British Isles and are rarely encountered in the U.S. British idioms are in fact more familiar to other Europeans or to the people of the British Commonwealth than to Americans, even though the language is same. The future of idiomatic expressions in the English language seems certain. They are more and more based on American English. This development will continue through new mediums like the Internet and interactive mediums. It is hard to say what this will do to idioms and what kind of new idioms are created. This will be an interesting development to follow, and by no means does it lessen the humor, variety and color of English language.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。
