《空中英语教室》的基本内容和学习方法

《空中英语教室》的基本内容和学习方法(转)我是1962年生人,也正是这一年彭蒙惠博士在台北与林语堂先生一同播出了第一堂《空中英语教室》广播讲座。
(Debra: Please display that old photograph of Doris and Lin)

Energy Drinks-Good or Bad?-(2-1)-Can you get lasting energy from a drink?空中英語教室-2012-06-08[Medium]关键词:flunk,pass out, load, definitely, caffeine, boost, vibeHi,everybody, welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. Thanks for joining us today. My name is Steve.Well, where do you go,what do you do when you need extra energy? You go to the sofa for a nap.Do you go to the kitchen for a piece of fruit or a candy bar? Now, how about getting your energy from a can? That's right. This month,in our Studio Classroom VIEWPOINTS feature,we tackle the pros and cons of energy drinks.Energy drinks,in some form or another, have been around for ages. But have you noticed that in the last year or two, they really seemed to have exploded in number.Let's open our magazines to page22and meet this month's VIEWPOINTS friends Luke and Amy.Energy Drinks-Good or Bad?Can you get lasting energy from a drink?Hi,Amy.How are you doing? You look really tired!I'm so exhausted.I didn't sleep at all last night! Why?What were you doing?I was studying for my world history test.I started studying at11:00,and I didn't stop until8:00this morning.I don't want to flunk.Wow!How did you manage to concentrate for that many hours?I would have passed out on my books long before8:00this morning.Simple.I had an energy drink.Really?Do those drinks really help you study?I know they're loaded with sugar and caffeine.(Music).Hello,friends,thank you so much for joining us here in the studio. My name is Kaylah.(Background Noise). My name is Ryan.Um, Ryan, you look a little sleepy.Oh,yeah,I've felt a little tired.I don't think I got enough sleep last night.Well,I have an energy drink.Would you like to try it?Oh.Uh,well, actually,no thanks.I don't like to drink energy drinks. Why not?Well,we're going to talk a little bit about that today in our VIEWPOINTS article which is all about energy drinks:are they good or are they bad? That's right. Are they good or are they bad?Sometimes we'd like to have an energy drink just in case we need some extra energy. But our question is:Can you get lasting energy from just a drink? And that's a great question.OK.So in order to find out, we're going to look at a conversation between Luke and Amy.And we start off with Luke. And Luke says,"Hi,Amy.How are you doing? You look really tired."Now,first of all,I said Ryan looked a little sleepy. That's another way of saying,"You look tired."But Ryan,is that really polite?Uh,actually,it's usually not polite to tell someone that they look tired. That's another way of saying:You don't look very good right now. That's right. It's more polite than saying,"You look bad."But it's also very rude.So just be careful how you say it and who you say it to.Yeah.Maybe ask,"Do you feel OK?"And if they're tired, they'll let you know. But Luke asks Amy if she is tired. So she said,"Oh,I am.I'm so exhausted," which we remember means to be really tired.Well, why is she exhausted? She says,"I didn't sleep at all last night!"Now Ryan,I think I understand why she's tired.Right, you'resupposed to sleep every night. And usually depending on your age,you need to get about eight hours of sleep a night. That's right.Well,Luke has a good question:Why?What were you doing? Why were you awake that late? And that's a great question. Most of us need to get a lot of sleep, and if you're staying up late, there's probably a reason, especially if you didn't sleep at all.Now Amy has an answer that unfortunately many of us understand. She says:I was studying for my world history test.I started studying at11:00,and I didn't stop until8:00this morning.I don't want to flunk.Oh,dear!OK.So I think many of you have probably dealt with this at some point.I know I have. You have a huge test coming up or you have a lot of homework to do,so you stay up all night long because you don't want to flunk. That's right. Now"flunk"means to fail an exam...examination or a course of study. So you can flunk a test. That means you fail the test. But you can also fail a class or a course. That is to flunk.Wow.So you don't want to fail. You want to do well. But you end up spending a lot of time awake at night and that can actually be really bad for you.He says: Wow!How did you manage to concentrate for that many hours?I would have passed out on my books long before8:00this morning.OK.If you pass out, that means you are unconscious, which means you're not awake. And so he said:I would have fallen asleep much sooner than you would have. How did you stay awake?Simple.I had an energy drink.Oh,OK.Well,energy drinks can give you energy. So Luke says:Really?Do those drinks really help you study? Now that's a good question.Do they help you study or are they just keeping you awake?Right, that's a great question. He says,"I know they're loaded with sugar and caffeine."So he knows they can help you,uh,stay awake, but can they really help you study if they're loaded with that much sugar and caffeine?Well,to be loaded with something means to have a lot of it,to...contain a lot of something. So if you have a lot of money, you are loaded with money. These drinks have a lot of caffeine and sugar,so these drinks would say they are loaded with caffeine and sugar.Right.So they have a lot of caffeine and sugar. And we know sugar is very common in sweet things-sweet foods and sweet drinks.Uh,and caffeine,we think of usually coffee. It is a chemical you can find in some drinks and some foods that gives people a lot of energy;makes them very active. That's right. Now we can say that was a...Another word for caffeine would be it gives you energy,it's a stimulant,it makes you have a lot of energy,it keeps you awake. We drink coffee in the morning to help us wake up,and that has a lot of caffeine... caffeine.Unfortunately,we can become addicted to it.You can rely on it too much.So be careful how much caffeine you drink. And be careful how you drink it.Do you get caffeine from coffee or from energy drinks?Well, right now let's watch this interview. In my opinion,I don't like energy drinks because it gives me the shakes in my hands, and it also increases my heart rate. But I did have an interesting experience with energy drinks.I was at a job interview one day,and I was very tired,so I took half a bottle of those Red Bull shots. And I'm telling you,I was jumping off the walls and I was just talking so fast, and I couldn'tconcentrate.I was just looking all over the place.Well,it was obvious that I had too much energy and I was way too hyper. But you know what happened in the end?I was hired.I was hired as one of the clowns in a theme park. So,unless you want to be a clown,I suggest you stay away from energy drinks. When I study in university,I always stay up very late to finish my artworks.Sometimes I will buy energy drinks to keep me awake.I see the vitamin in drinks can help me be more efficient and keep me from the doctor. And yes,I finish my works in the morning with an exhausted body. But guess what?I need twelve hours of sleeping each day for three days to recover from only one all-night working. Is it worth it?No,I don't thinkso.OK.Welcome back. One popular energy drink has roughly a quarter cup of sugar per16 ounce can.I think that's equal to8sugar cubes, and you can check my math on that. And if you've never heard about how bad sugar is for your health,go back and review our April HEALTH article titled Sugar and Your Health.OK.Let's jump back into our conversation with Amy's next comment on line16.Energy Drinks-Good or Bad?In my opinion, they are very effective. The caffeine in the drink gives me a little energy boost. When I drink one,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for hours on end.So you think they're pretty useful when you need to stay awake.Definitely.A lot of people in our class have been drinking them recently.Energy drinks are so in style right now.You should try one sometime!Yeah,I've seen a lot of commercials for energy drinks on TV and in magazines. The vibes are really cool. But I've also read that they are extremely unhealthy.(Music).Well,are energy drinks good or bad? We've learned that they have a lot of sugar and a lot of caffeine. We said they are loaded with those.Well,we know that's how you stay awake. The sugar energy as well as the caffeine that stimulates your brain so you stay awake. But do they really help you study?Hmm,that's the question Luke left us with before the break. And Amy answers by saying:In my opinion, they are very effective. So she says,"In my opinion..."This is a phrase we can use to say:I don't know for sure,or it's not a fact all over, but from what I think, this is what I think about,so in my opinion. She says she thinks they're very effective. So they work for her. That's what she says."And the caffeine in the drink,"she says,"gives me a little energy boost."Now the caffeine is what's going to give you the most energy in an energy drink or coffee, and that could help give you a nice boost. Now to boost something,it means to improve or increase something. So it is increasing or improving her energy level. So we can boost other things.Maybe you need to...You're feeling really sad and depressed, and your friend comes over and makes you laugh. They boost your energy, they boost your confidence by bringing some joy back to life.Yeah,to raise it quickly. Now,Amy continues to say:When I drink energy drinks,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for hours on end.And I know many ofyou sometimes are forced to study for hours on end. That's right, and that's our Grammar on the Go sentence,so let's visit Liz.Hi,there, friends, greetings from Toronto,Canada.I hope you're all doing well today. My name is Liz,and it's time for Grammar on the Go.So we're talking about energy drinks in today's VIEWPOINTS article and whether they're good or bad.A lot of people question the benefits of energy drinks, but there are many who really believe energy drinks are great, especially for those who have to work for a long time and are feeling tired. We read in today's article:When I drink one,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for hours on end. That's our Grammar Tip sentence.Notice the phrase at the end of the sentence:on end. It's an idiom that means"continuously or without stopping."So today's sentence just means:When I drink an energy drink,I don't feel tired or sleepy when I'm forced to study for a very long time. This idiom is usually found in informal conversations when people want to describe situations that continue for a very long time. For example,Alice is depressed because it has been raining for weeks on end.Or,Linda has been having trouble with her computer for days on end;I think she should have it checked. So give this idiom a try next time when you want to talk about how something has been going on continuously. And if you like to see some more example sentences, you can check out today's Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine. That's all the time we have for today. This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off in Toronto.Bye-bye.Thank you,Liz.So Amy says she gets a nice energy boost from energy drinks. And Luke says:Well,so you think they're pretty useful when you need to stay awake. That's right. We know she needs to stay awake because she's studying for hours on end.Yeah,so,and like many of you,you might be forced to study...for hours on end.And if you're forced to do something, that means you are made to do it.Someone is telling you that you need to do that.Or you feel like you are not prepared enough and you have to stay awake. That can be the other way that you're forced into studying for hours on end.Amy says this definitely helps her.She uses the word"definitely"in the beginning. Now what does that mean? All right. The word"definitely"means"absolutely;without any doubt."So she says yes, sure, the energy drinks do help her stay awake. Now we see that that is a full sentence all by itself. So it's an expressive way of saying it.You would say, "Definitely,"because you completely believe it without any doubt that this is true.Mmhm, that's right. And so you use that word to express that.Uh,but Amy continues to say,"A lot of people in our class have been drinking them recently."So a lot of people...I know a lot of you, maybe your friends, drink energy drinks. And they're so in style right now. That's right. So if something is in style, that means it's very popular, people are using that product a lot.Now if you are a student and are studying late at night,or you're professional and you work late hours and are up early in the morning, energy drinks are very tempting.Or even if you're an athlete, sometimes you are tempted by them. She's so convinced that they're good. She says that we should definitely try them. You should try it once sometime.Yeah,OK,so she thinks energy drinks are wonderful;they are in style;people like them. She thinks it helps her study,so she recommends that Luke should have some too.But Luke continues saying now.He says,"Well, yeah,I've seen a lot of commercials for energy drinks on TV and in magazines."They are popular. That's right. They are very popular. We see advertisements for them all the time.So we can...You know,we even think about some of the big brands:Monster brand or Red Bull.We all know that Red Bull gives you wings. It's a very famous phrase that we know from advertising. So we are familiar with them.We know what they are.Right.And he continues to say the vibes of energy drinks are really cool. Now the word"vibes"describes the character or the mood of something. That's right. We can use vibes when we talk about music as well.It gives me good vibes. It makes me feel good. It's a cool rhythm. So energy drinks have good, cool vibes. But I've also read that they're extremely unhealthy. He's making a great point right here at the end of today's article.OK,yeah, and this is,I think, the biggest problem with energy drinks. So we're just now starting to get talking about this. And we're going to continue talking about how healthy energy drinks are tomorrow. That's right. But for right now,we need to jump on over and visit Ken in the Chat Room.Hi,this is Bryan calling from the library. Is Donna Jones there?Oh.If you see her,can you tell her to return The Joy of Cooking?Yeah,it's overdue, and there's a person requesting it.OK.Thank you very much.Good-bye now.Hey,Bryan, are you looking for Donna Jones?Yes,one of the books she checked out is overdue, and someone wants to borrow it.She was in the library lately.I saw her the other day.She was?Oh,if you see her again, tell her I'm looking for her.Sure, of course.Uh,Ken,you should have just said she was in the library recently, not lately.Recently?Doesn't"recently"mean the same thing as"lately"?Yes,they do have the same meaning, but they are used differently. When we talk about a single action or event, we should use"recently".So seeing Donna in the library was a single event? That's right. You just saw her one time, right?Right.Just the other day.I saw her on the second floor. So she was in the library recently.OK.What about"lately"?"Lately"is used with continuous actions.Let's say, you've seen Donna in the library many times this past week. Then you can say she has been coming to the library a lot lately. So I can't say "recently"?Well, actually, you can.In this case, both"lately"and"recently"would work.So from your perspective, what should you say:I haven't seen Donna lately,or I haven't seen Donna recently?Either one is fine because"recently"can refer to a single event or continuous events in the near past. The thing to remember is that when you talk about a single event that happened in the near past, you can only use"recently".Thanks, Bryan. You know,I was eating a pizza recently and thought of you.Yep,you've got it, Ken.(Chinese).Hi,everyone,I'm Michelle.(Chinese).And we're running out of time.Don't forget to come back tomorrow.Bye-bye.Thank you,Michelle. We appreciate those tips all the time.So Luke leaves us with the thought that energy drinks can be extremelyunhealthy. No doubt he's been reading stuff on the Internet that says energy drinks can create or complicate problems like diabetes, heart attacks, psychological disorders, and yes, even death.Friends, what this means is you need to do more homework before you get into the habit of getting your energy from a can.OK.We'll continue this VIEWPOINTS discussion tomorrow.Until then, have a wonderful day.(Music).。

My name’s Steve.Traveller: My name’s Mr. Sanchez. I woul d like to go on a business trip to London. Travel agent: When are you planning on travelling?Traveller: I plan on travelling at the end of mouth. Today is September 10 and I wish to travel on September 29.Travel agent: On September 29, that’s within 21 days. Creative Ways to Thank Your TeacherPart I (00:39 – 11:52)[00:39]Welcome, everyone, to Studio Classroom Worldwide! My name is Steve. Well, Teacher’s Day comes around once a year, and it actually falls on a different day depending where you are in the world. Here in Taiwan, Teacher’s Day is today, so before I go any further, I want to pause and say to all you teachers, “Thank you! Thank you for your efforts and contributions to your students and to society. We appreciate you.” Now in this portion of the lesson, we will see two Key Words. The first innumerable(adj), “Elvis Presley had innumerable hit songs in the ’50s and ’60s. Even today, his CDs still sell many copies worldwide.”; the second word is bind(v), “Before he handed in his thesis, Jim had it bound at the university print shop.” OK. Let’s talk about showing appreciation to the teachers in your life. The reading starts on page 52.[01:44] Text[02:45]Hi, friends! I’m Esther. And I’m Rachel. And it’s Teacher’s Day. Have you done anything for your teacher today? Now, maybe you are not in school, but maybe you have a child who is in school. And this is the day when children and students all over can show appreciation to the teachers in their life. Although, Esther, you don’t have to wait for a special day, do you? You can show appreciation to your teacher anytimeof the year. Right, any day of the year. And today we’ll be talking about some creative ways you can say “thank you” to your teacher. So something that might be a little different from what you usually do. But hopefully you’ll gain some tips, and maybe next year you can show your teacher your appreciation in one of these creative ways. Very good. Well, let’s talk a little bit about teachers right now. We know that teachers spend innumerable hours planning lessons, grading papers, and encouraging and challenging students. They spend innumerable hours, countless hours, it’s, in other words, it’s almost too many to count. If you see that word, you, ah, numerable in there, it just refers to the wo rd “number”. So innumerable means a very, very big number. So many you can’t even count. So don’t let your teacher’s work go unnoticed. Notice what your teacher’s doing, and say “thank you”. Well, this is a great sentence. Let’s go to see what Liz has to say about this on Grammar on the Go.[04:19]Grammar on the GoHi there, friends! Welcome to Grammar on the go! My name is Liz and I'm here at a local Studio Classroom bookstore. This place not only has a good selection of books, but it also has a lot of other great gift items like CDs, DVDs and stationary items, to name a few. Well, before I get in the way of other shoppers, let's take a look at today's Grammar Tip sentence. Don't let your teacher's work go unnoticed.Notice the phrase at the end of the sentence: “go unnoticed”, it's a simpleway of saying to continue on with no one paying any attention. In other word, today's Grammar Tip sentence just means:Don't let your teachers' work continue on with nobody showing any appreciation for it.Use this phrase “to go unnoticed” when you want to talk about how something is or was ignored. For example, let's say you’ve noticed a serious problem in your community, but realized that no one is doing anything about it, you could say:This is a serious problem; how could anyone let it go unnoticed?Or, Vincent Van Gogh's paintings are now highly admired, and yet it's amazing to think that the artist had only sold one painting during his lifetime, so we can say:It's hard to imagine that Vincent Van Gogh's paintings went almost unnoticed during his lifetime.Well friends, that's all the time we have for today. I see that the…there’re some shoppers want to come and look at things over here, so I’d better move out of their way. So this is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off. Bye-bye![06:00] Thanks, Liz! So we’re going to teach you how to say “thank you” to your teachers in a creative way. We have three tips for you. And the first one is to create a book. Now these are a little bit more creative thanjust m aking, for example a homemade card. So again, we’re going to give you some ideas you might need to spend some time on these ideas for your teacher, but I guarantee your teacher will appreciate your effort. And if you create a book, then you might need to work with your other classmates, because it would be very fun and everyone could have some input in this special book. So our text says, “Present your teacher with a one-of-a-kind book made especially for him or her.” This is very different, very special and only you and your classmates can give your teacher this book. It’s one-of-a-kind. And I like how everybody is working on this together, in other words, each student in the class can create a page showing his or her thanks, and on that page they can draw a picture or write a poem or express gratitude through a letter. So it gives the students freedom to do what they want to do. Some students are great artists, they can draw beautiful pictures and other students might be great with words and they can write beautiful poems. And if you are a student, maybe you can be the one telling your classmates about this idea and it won’t cost you very much money, because you just have to draw something or take a picture or write a letter and it will get everyone involved. Exactly! This is a wonderful idea. So the point here is that you can express your gratitude or your thanks to your teacher through this book. And at the end, you can bind the pages at a copy shop. The word here is you can have the pages bound, and that just means that they are secured with the cover or youjust put them all together and you have they’re all like in, in book form. That’s what it means to bind a book. Right, “bind” is the present tense and “bound” is the past tense. So you can have all the pages bound inexpensively at a copy shop. So it’s very inexpensive, it won’t cost you very much money, and you can go to a copy shop, and this is where you can make photo copies and have books bound. Exactly, it’s very easy to bind a book and to make your own book. So this is a great idea. I highly recommend it, even if you are a high school student, elementary school student, it doesn’t matter. You can make a beautiful book for your teacher that shows your appreciation. Well, we have more ideas for you, but right now we are going to visit the Chat Room and take a break, so don’t go away.[08:51] Chat RoomPart II (12:06 – 23:29)[12:06]Welcome back from the break, everyone! Today is Teacher’s Day. Today’s date was chosen to commemorate the birth of Confu cius –the master educator of ancient China. Our author’s first suggestion for showing appreciation to our teachers is to create a book. Our next creative way to show appreciation is to give your teacher a basket? Well, I don’t think it would be an empty basket. We’ll find out what the author has in mind after we check in at the Word Bank, where we find the nounexception(n), “The special effects were the one exception to the disappointing movie – they were great!”; next is the idiom make one’s day(idiom), as in “It made my day when I learned that I had won a free trip to Hong Kong!” OK. Let’s resume our reading. We’re now on line five of the left-hand column on page 53.[13:06]Text[14:22] Now before the break we talked about how you can create a book for your teacher, different people can all put their drawings and letters in this book. But now we have two more suggestions you can do, and the first thing you can do is you can surprise your teacher with a personalized gift basket. A personalized basket. That means you personalize it for your teacher or you make it personal for him or her, you put things in it that your teacher would especially enjoy. And everyone enjoys a surprise, right? Especially your teachers, I'm sure. They probably don't get very many good surprises from their students. So they are no exception. Now Esther, what does this phrase mean if, if we say teachers are no exception to this. Well, if someone or something is an exception, it means they are very different from other people in that group. So all teachers like everyone, teachers all enjoy surprises, so teachers are no exception. So you can surprise them by putting together a basket of his or her favorite things. For example, if your teacher likes to read, then maybe differentclassmates can each buy a book and put it in this gift basket for your teacher. So the first thing you need to do is find out what your teacher enjoys. What are some of his or her favorite things? And then you can put those things in the gift basket. Again, if you they like to read, buy them some books or magazines, but if it’s sports that catch your teacher's eye, include tickets to a sporting event in your teacher's basket with other sports-oriented gifts. Now we have a phrase here, if something catches your ey e, what does that mean, Esther? I might say, “Wow! That really caught my eye!” Right, if something catches your eye, it means it gets your attention. Maybe you're at the store and you want to buy something, and this new food item, it catches your eye, it gets your attention and you want to look at it and pay attention to it. That happens to me all the time actually, things catch my eye and I want to try it or to buy it. Well, if it’s sports that catch your teacher's eye, in other words, if your teacher is really a sports fan, then get them some tickets or some sports-oriented gifts, sports-themed gifts, we might say, and anything that they would enjoy that has to do with sports, or what you can do is fill the basket with necessary classroom supplies like pens and paper clips. That sounds like more of a practical gift, doesn't it? Right. And if your teacher seems he’s very practical, they might enjoy this gift basket very much. So we have pictures of both sports things, gift basket and more practical gift of classroom supplies and also another one of books on page 53 for you tosee. Exactly. They’re beautiful gift baskets. I guarantee your teacher will love them. Another one I can think of is you could make a gift basket and put in some snacks and some, maybe some candy and some, some tea or some coffee and if your teacher really likes to eat or to try new things, that would be another fun gift basket. And Esther, we, I also think that students could do this together, right, not one student having to buy everything, but maybe each student could contribute one thing to the gift basket. Right. Because we were talking about how it might be kind of expensive for one person to purchase everything. So if you have 30 students in your class, then you should buy something small or maybe two or three students could buy a book together instead of having one person buy everything. Yes, that's a great idea. When you work together you can always come up with more as well. Well, our third idea for you very quickly here is that you can plan an event, you can organize a fun after-school event in honor of your teacher, so an event that would take place after school, not during the school day. And who could you invite to join this event? You can invite other students, parents, and administrators. And administrators are people in the school office who work with administration like the secretary, or the vice principal and they can come together for a time of games and eating refreshments or snacks. Ah, so that sounds like fun. You cou ld plan an event to say “thank you”, but however, you decide to say “thanks”, it will make your teacher's day. Solet's end on this idiom. If you make someone's day, then you give them a great day and you, they feel very appreciated and they're so thankful that you took the time to do something special for them. Let's watch today's Skit.[19:14] Skit[20:56]Language Tips[22:44]Thank you, Michelle! Well everyone, there’s still time to plan something special for your teacher. We hope you found our suggestions creative and helpful as you and maybe your classmates with you make plans to show your teachers some appreciation. Friends, if you’re looking for a fun English challenge, check out our Tidbits feature on page 43. There you’ll find some supplementary information about some of the topics in this month’s magazine.
