在处理小说结尾方面，欧 · 亨利显示了惊人 的独创性。以课文为例：当德拉夫妇把自己经多方周 折得来的礼物赠送给对方时，竟发现它们都是毫无用 处的东西，而小说就在这啼笑皆非的戏剧性场面中戛 然而止。从而使小说的思想境界和人物形象骤然升华 到顶点。这一结尾确是出人意料之外，但由于作者事 先作了铺垫，埋下伏笔，因此这一结尾又显得不悖情 理，且耐人寻味。它完全符合人物的特定环境（经济 拮据）和特定性格（矢忠爱情），读者在惊愕之余， 不由拍案叫绝，赞叹作者构思的巧妙。
