Previous technology has tended to replace unskilled tasks, but the present AI technology can perform some complex tasks, such as designing posters and writing poems. The horror is that an advanced AI causes harm to a large degree such as making poisons or persuading humans to start attacks. Researchers worry that fixture AIs may go against their human creators. Such worries should not be ignored. But all involve a huge amount of guesswork, and a jump from today’s technology. Rules are needed, but for simpler reasons than saving humanity. So far governments are taking different approaches. At one end of the range is Britain, which applies existing rules to AI systems to encourage investment(投资) and turn Britain into an “AI superpower”. America has taken a similar approach, though it is now seeking public views on what a rule-book might look like. The EU is taking a tougher line, whose law classifies(分类) different uses of AI by the degree of risk. But it is believed that an even sricter approach is needed. Governments should treat AI like medicines, with strict testing and pre-approval before going public. China is doing some of this, requiring companies to go through a safety review before going public. What to do? Tighter rules over time may be needed. Intergovernmental agreements, similar to those that govern nuclear weapons(核武器), may also seem appropriate. To keep the risk below a safe level, governments could form a body that could study AI safety andethics(伦理)一areas where companies are unwilling to invest as much as society might wish. The powerful technology presents new risks, but also offers extraordinary opportunities .Balancing the two means walking carefully. A careful approach today can provide the foundations on which farther rules can be added in future. But the time to start building those foundations is now.12、Why do we fear artificial intelligence currently?A. It gels surprisingly powerful.B. It goes against human beings.C. It causes most people jobless.D. It makes decisions on its own.13、What can we learn about the EU’s approach?A. It has specific considerations.B. It ignores economic advance.C. It practices the strictest laws.D. It relies on public wisdom.14、Why is nuclear weapons mentioned in Para.5?A. To indicate the possible risk of AI.B. To suggest a solution to control AI.C. To stress the importance of AI safety.D. To prove the need of tighter rules for AI.15、What might be the best title for the passage?A. Who to Stop AIB. What to Expect of AIC. When to Act Against AID. How to Worry Wisely about AI二、七选五16、People with mild cognitive impairment(认知缺陷)(MCI) are 30 per cent more likely to recover if they feel optimistic about ageing, according to a study carried out by the Yale School of Public Health.①______ But according to Professor Becca Levy, lead author of the study, that's not the case at all, “Most people assume there is no recovery from MCI, but in fact half of those who have it do recover.”Mild cognitive impairment is a condition which causes memory loss and difficulty in thinking clearly. ②______ People with MCI may also experience a loss of smell or sense of space. The study was conducted over a twelve-year period between 2008-2020 involving 1,716 people aged 65 and above. ③______ Those who came to the study without MCI were also far less likely to develop it if they felt more optimistic about age, and this has nothing to do with their physical health or age. The first song of the concert,Search High and Low,refers to the classical poem Li Sao,"The road ahead will be long.I shall search high and low." "It's arranged to be sung in the beginning by all performers, showing that we should all search high and low forour roots," Gong Linna says.To explore the education and popularization of Chinese music,in 2017,Gong Linna established a research and development team, which includes musicologist(音乐学家),Du Yaxiong, and music historian,Zhao Zhongming,to discuss her music teaching methods and summarize the vocal skills of Chinese music.Gong Linna believed that popularization of Chinese music should depend on primary and secondary schools rather than music schools. The children's strong love for music and their outstanding performance amazed Gong Linna,"When singing, they are completely concentrated on the music.Music brings light and richness to one's spiritual world. So,learning to sing is never about passing examinations, but about enjoying the music."Lu Yueming,a teacher of the school's art center, said,"The children worked really hard and kept in mind Gong Linna's instructions(讲授).Seeing their performance,I know that they truly fell in love with traditional Chinese music.I hope more Chinese students can benefit from the teaching practice in the near future.""Seeing the children perform my pieces,I realized I should write more songs for them," Lao Luo,Gong Linna's husband said proudly. "They are spending a lot of time looking at everyone else's posts, where they are, where they are going and what they are doing. The constant connection to others' perfect life experiences causes feelings of being left out,and of being lonely."So what's the answer?"It's simple," says Kersting,"All you need to do is to have a strong will. The solution to this is to refuse the addiction to looking at everyone else's life.Just focus on your own life, where you're going, what you are grateful for,and what you want to achieve in this world. Then go out and do it,and stop wasting so much time comparing."12. When I was a boy growing up, I couldn’t once ever remember either my mom or my grandma wasting food. Anything we didn’t eat at one meal was saved, stored and served as leftovers later on. I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of brown beans with a large cake of cornbread. We would all eat until we were stuffed, but there was always about half of the beans left over. A few days later, my grandma would take those beans out of the refrigerator, boil spaghetti (意大利面), add vegetables and mix them all together into her delicious spaghetti. I also remember when I watched my mom fry bacon for us in the morning, she would always take the oil and carefully pour it into a container. Then she later would use it to flavor so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that green beans didn’t actually taste like bacon.

D.An old legend.James Rilling of Emory University in Atlanta published the study in The Royal Society in November,2021. His team surveyed 50 grandmothers each with one biological grandchild be-tween 3 and 12 years old and one of their own child. They also measured the brain function as the participants viewed pictures of their grandchild and the same-sex parent of the grandchild. Researchers found that grandmothers viewing their grandchild’s pictures activated parts of the brain that involved emotional empathy(共鸣)and movement. In contrast, the study also found that when grandmothers viewed images of their adult child, they showed stronger activation in an area of the brain associated with cognitive(认知的)empathy. That indicates they may be trying to cognitively understand what their adult child is thinking or feeling and why, but not as much from the emotional side. Compared with results from an earlier study by the Rilling lab of fathers viewing photos of their children, results showed that grandmothers activated more parts of the brain that involved emotional empathy and motivation.“That suggests that grandmothers tend to feel what their grandchildren are feeling when they interact with them,” Rilling said. “If their grandchild is smiling, they’re feeling the child’s joy. And if their grandchild is crying, they’re feeling the child’s pain and sorrow.” In many societies, grandmothers are important caregivers, and their investment is often associated with improving their grandchildren’s well-being.It’s part of the reason why the US celebrates Grandparents’ Day each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day in September. The announcement was signed in 1978. “Because grandparents are usually free to love, guide and befriendthe young without having to take the daily responsibility for them. They can reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations,”the announcement read.4.How many generations were there at least in the participants’ families? A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.5.What did Rilling say about grandmothers and their grandchildren in paragraph 3?A.Their cognitive abilities. B.Their emotional interaction. C.Their respective preferences. A groundbreaking study published in the journal Environmental Research has found that fruits and vegetables absorb microplastic particles from the soil and move them through vegetal tissues, where they remain until eaten by hungry diners, thus getting transferred to human bodies. The researchers, who are from the University of Catania in Italy, as well as Sousse and Monastir universities in Tunisia, analyzed a variety of common fruits and vegetables — carrots, lettuce, broccoli, potatoes, apples, and pears. These were chosen for the fact that they are frequently consumed, usually one per day, which allowed the researchers to better assess the dietary intakes of MPs (microplastic particles) and NPs (nano-plastics). The samples were purchased from different sources in the city of Catania, including a small fruitvendor and a supermarket. The researchers found that apples, followed by pears, were the most polluted fruit samples, and carrots were the most polluted vegetable. In the study’s discussion section, the authors wrote, “We can assume that the fruits contain more MPs not only because of the very high vascularization(血管化) of the fruit pulp(果肉) but also due to the greater size and complexity of the root system and age of the tree (several years) compared to the vegetables (60–75 days for the carrot). ”This study is important because it’s the first to detect microplastics in fruits and vegetables. They have been found in other sources before, such as sea salt, beer, water (bottled, in particular), shellfish, sugar, soil, and even air, but never inside fresh produce. It’s an alarming discovery that raises yet another red flag about microplastic pollution in the natural environment. It’s an area that will likely see a lot more attention in coming years, with the study authors calling for further research into the question of microplastic and whether it harms the health of both plants and humans. 8.What is the study about?A.The main cause of soil pollution.B.The great changes in people’s diets.C.The benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.D.The microplastic pollution in fruits and vegetables.9.Why did researchers choose frequently eaten fruits and vegetables?A.To lower the cost of the study.B.To gain widespread acceptance.C.To improve the accuracy of the study.D.To reduce the time for preparing the samples.10.What may cause fruits to contain more MPs according to the authors? A.The deep spreading roots.B.The long growth period of fruit trees.C.The complex preservation method.D.The large amounts of the fruit pulp.11.What do the study authors think of the research on microplastic?A.It needs to be further studied.B.It wasted them quite a lot of time.C.It has raised people’s awareness of health.D.It has attracted people’s attention to diets.United Airlines is aiming to have electric aircraft flying regional routes by the end of the decade, part of the company’s goal to fully reduce its carbon footprint to net zero by 2050.Those battery-powered aircraft are being developed by Swedish start-up Heart Aerospace, from which United Airlines placed an order for 100 planes in July 2021. United Airlines has pushed heavily into a variety of lower-emission forms of aviation, not only announcing plans to buy electric air taxis and vertical aircraft, as well as hydrogen-electric engines but also investing in the companies behind the advanced technologies.“We cannot continue doing and operating our business the way we do; it is important that we change it, and the way we’ re going to change it is through investing in technology,” Mike Leskinen, United Airlines Ventures president, said in an interview as part of CNBC’s ESG Impact virtual conference on Thursday. “Existing technology is going to either cause us to fly less, which is an unacceptable alternative, or continue with a carbon footprint, which we believe is equally unacceptable,” Leskinen said.Heart Aerospace, which recently redesigned what will be its first electric aircraft which is now called the ES-30, plans to have the planes enter service in 2028, said Anders Forslund, the company’s CEO and founder. The 30-passenger planes will be driven by electric motors with battery-derived energy, allowing the planes to have a fully electric range of 200 kilometers. The planes will also include a reserve- hybrid engine powered by sustainable aviation fuel, allowing it to have an extended range of up to 400 kilometers with a full flight.United Airlines could potentially offer those shorter routes not only with greater frequency but at a lower cost. Leskinen said. “As we adopt electricaircraft, I think the cost for a 30-seat aircraft or a 50-seat aircraft, as the industry evolves, is going to be lower than a traditional aircraft,” he said. For small cities, this means they are “going to get either service that they didn’t have before or greater frequency of service,” he added.12.What message did Mike Leskinen try to deliver in paragraph 3? A.Economic benefits should come first.B.Environmental protection should come first.C.Economy and environment should be equally valued.D.Economy and environment can’t be balanced.13.What do we learn about the electric planes mentioned in the text? A.They will offer short-distance flights. B.They will fly faster than traditional ones.C.They were developed by United Airlines. D.They each can hold 30 passengers at most.14.What did Leskinen try to stress about the electric planes in the last paragraph?A.Their security performance. B.Their potential benefits. C.Their operating modes. D.Their possible problems. 15.Which would be the most suitable title for the text?A.ES-30 Will Be Driven by Electric MotorsB.The Airline Industry Faces New OpportunitiesC.Heart Aerospace Plans to Develop Electric PlanesD.United Airlines Aims to Have Electric Planes Flying二、七选五How to Make a Difference in Your CareerMaking a meaningful career choice is a crucial decision in life. 16 , such as being a doctor, teacher or charity worker. You can also learn the number of stairs you've climbed and steps you've taken, metrics〔度量〕it had never occurred to me to wonder about. Not one to resist peer pressure, however, I paid $100for a Fitbit Flex. I chose that brand on the basis of research: asking my friend Sari which tracker she used. The Fitbit website offered instructions on setting up my new tracker. I entered my height and gender(性别) and certain information I considered none of its business:birth date and weight. Then I established goals. The American Heart Associationrecommends that we all walk 10,000steps a day-about five miles, and so does Fitbit. I decided 6,000steps was a good place for me to start.I changed my tune when, on day one, I hit 6,000steps and tiny LED lights flashed on my wristband. Confident enough now, I went back to my phone and upped my goal to 8,000steps. So I got a little obsessed(着迷). On day five at a department store, Idecided to check my progress. My target number was just 275steps away! I walkedaround the dress department watching my smartphone register each step I took. I hate to tell you how much pleasure this gave me.Now I always wear my tracker, not because I've grown to love fitness but because I like being trendy and self-absorbed. This past summer alone, Urban Outfitters, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s,and American Eagle have all announced rental subscription services — a sure sign of changing times. But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline researched this question in an article for Elle, and she concluded that it’s not as green as it seems.Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented —receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest footprint of our fashion habit after producing. She writes, “An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20kilograms of carbon each way, and increases to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. However, thecarbon effect of a pair of jeans bought in a store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2021 study.〞Then there’s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it’s returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry-cleaning is a high-effect and polluting process, which can produce dangerous waste and air pollution if not dealt with correctly.Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our, desire for fast fashion, simply because it’s so easy to get. There’s something called‘share-washing’ that leads to more wasteful behaviors mainly because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as “a way to share rides and limit car ownership,〞 and yet “it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.〞Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the waste after a few wears, but we shouldn’t let the convenience of these services make us satisfied. There’s an even better step—and that’s wearing what is already in the closet .28.How much carbon will be produced when an item is normally ordered online and then returned?A.10 kilograms.B. 20 kilograms.C. 40 kilograms.D. 50 kilograms.29.What does Elizabeth Cline think of clothing rental?A.It is considered fashioned.B. It is popular to young people.C. It can reduce transport burden.D. It can leave large carbon footprint.30.The example of Uber is used to show the rental services .A.cause more wasteful behaviorsB.satisfy our desire for fashionC.help protect the environmentD.replace the public transport31.What does the author actually want to express in the last paragraph?A.The request for throwing cheap clothes.B.The advice on wearing what we own.C.The disadvantage of clothing rental.D.The call for renting clothes.DIt’s a safe bet that a robot made your car and made your computer. Pretty soon, they could be making your bed and breakfast too.Increasingly, engineers are saying that robots are going to move out of research departments and into your home. Companies including General Electric are workingon designs for small robots. Products like the Roomba, a robot that can clean floors, are flying off the shelves. What’s behind this new robot revolution? It’s partly a matter of technology. Devices that can recognize and respond to a human voice have been developed. There are now a few different ways for robots to move around. They can walk, crawl or ride on wheels. Robots are being made smaller and smaller. They are also becoming more and more able.A bigger part of the story is on the demand side. From the day thetelevision remote control was invented, people around the world have searchedfor new ways to be lazy. Take into consideration that more and more people can afford robots, and the time seems ripe to introduce robots to the ordinaryfamily. To be sure, robots that walk on two legs and talk like people are still along way off. However, robots that do basic housework such as cleaning or gardening are sure to come out soon. One thing is certain — when these robotsdo come into our homes, will change things forever.32.The underlined part “flying off the shelves〞 in the second paragraph means.A.selling wellB. cleaning the shelves smartlyC. flying freelyD. dropping onto the floor33.What can Roomba do?A.Making beds and breakfast.B. Making cars and computers.C. Cleaning floors.D. Looking after kids and pets.34.Which plays a more important role in revolutionizing the robot?A.Science and technology.B. Rapid development of companies.C. Effective marketing means.D. Great demand from the buyers.35.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Robots have already come into every home.B.Technology is the only basis of the development of robots.C.General Electric is not interested in designing small robots.D.Robots that can walk on two legs and talk like people are still far from us. 第二节〔共 5 小题;每题 2 分,总分值 10 分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最正确选项。
