The next time you’re exploring an unfamiliar city with a member of the opposite sex,pay attention to how each of you relates to your surroundings. That’s because according to a study published in the May2018issue of the journal Memory& Cognition, men and women use very different navigation(导航)strategies.

That probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise, especially if you have ever been, well,in a car with a man who won’t ask for directions.

But now there seems to be evidence to back up why men and women do differently when they’re driving. The study, out of the department of psychological and brain sciences at University of California,Santa Barbara, found that men are more likely to

take shortcuts, while women are more likely to wander.

The study, led by Alexander Boone, used undergraduate students from University of California,Santa Barbara as subjects. Its first experiment placed subjects in a virtual reality maze(迷宫)with various objects to serve as landmarks such as think chair, duck, plant, soccer ball, car, etc. They were directed to travel through the maze on a particular path to become familiar with it,and then navigate back to specific objects they’d passed.

Its second experiment, using a different group of test subjects, was much like the first, except that the maze also contained background landmarks such as trees and mountains,to see if their presence helped the subjects process and navigate the space any easier.

What both experiments showed is that the men were more likely to use their surroundings(those trees and mountains)to identify and use shortcuts, while women are more likely to wander(meaning repeating areas of the route)until they found the correct route.Because the men used shortcuts, they also tended to arrive at the destination faster than women.

24.What does the underlined word“That”in paragraph2refer to?

A.Driving with a member of the opposite sex.

B.Men and women handling problems differently.

C.People relating to their surroundings differently.

D.Men and women finding positions and directions differently.

25.What were the participants provided to help them navigate the space?

A.Some simple road maps.

B.A few navigation strategies.

C.Many objects for them to refer to.

D.Some guidance from the researchers.

26.What can we learn about the two experiments in the study?

A.They were done in real scenes.

B.They had entirely different results.

C.They used the same reference objects.

D.They adopted similar testing methods.

27.What did the researchers most probably conclude?

A.Women are really not fit to be drivers.

B.Women usually drive more slowly than men.

C.Men are generally more carefully when driving.

D.Men might be better navigators than women.

C

If you’re familiar with any of the the currently available voice assistants, you may find they are often difficult to use for anything other than the standard requests such as to play a song,do a simple web search,or set a reminder. When we speak to them,we often have to choose what we say accordingly,in a way that we hope increases our chances of making it work.

As a creative product,Duplex is the latest talking AI assistant made public by Google. It could talk to people on the phone to make appointments and check business opening hours. In recorded conversations,Duplex worked well with the humans on the receiving end. They hesitated(犹豫),looked back, skipped words, and even changed factspartway through a sentence, but Duplex could understand what was going on.

The AI system receives the voice of the person it is talking to on the Phone. The voice goes through Automatic Speech Recognition and is tuned into text. The text is used to pick up any information. The text and the key information are then sent to the heart of Duplex, which is called an Artificial Neural Network(ANN).The text response that the ANN produces is then sent to a text-to-speech system, and then spoken words will be played to the person on the phone.

As the heart of Duplex, the ANN is much simpler than our brains. The

text-to-speech system is an advanced AI,but in this case it is more advanced than the one on your phone, because it sounds almost similar to any normal voice.

In fact, human language is often too changeable to be handed well by

normal computers, but this sort of problem is perfect for AI.The result produced by the AI depends entirely on the past conversations that were shown to it.It learns what kinds of sentences to expect from the person it is talking to,and what kinds responses to give for each one.The key to creating more powerful AI may be to unlock more of the secrets of the brain.

28.According to the first paragraph, voice assistants usually.

A.don’t work well in conversations.

B.couldn’t record complex conversations.

C.spend much time responding to questions.

D.have difficulty providing right information.

29.As a voice assistant,Duplex is creative in that it could.

A.remember personal information.

B.start a new conversation actively.

C.provide other related information.

D.allow users to communicate freely with it.

30.What does paragraph3mainly talk about?

A.How Duplex works.

B.The benefits of the ANN.

C.The limitations of the Duplex.

D.Where Duplex can be applied.

31.Why is AI suitable to deal with human language?

A.It is good at reading human emotions.

B.It keeps language information organized.

C.It learns from examples of conversations.

D.It works with the help of normal computers.

D

Most of us think intent(意图)as a“kind of”,“sort of”thing:you tend to go on vocation, but you really don’t do much about it.Or you intend to go to the market, but some other things get in the way.Or you intend to ask your boss for a raise, but you get cold feet and chicken out.In truth, intent is a powerful and dynamic mechanism(动态的机制).It is not just wishful thinking.it’s the determination to act in a certain way.

Intent is so powerful that it can change the outcomes of scientific experiments. There’s a well-known effect in psychology called the“observer effect”.Simply stated, a researcher’s hope---his or her intent---for what an experiment may show impacts the outcome. So if a researcher expects(intends)the experiment to show improvement in an area,it will more likely show improvement, and if the researcher expects(intends), on the contrary, the experiment to show lack of improvement in an area,it will more

likely show lack.

If intent is the determination to act in a certain way, then the first thing to figure out is how badly you want the thing, because determination requires passion and perseverance(毅力),and there’s no way you are going to have passion and perseverance if you don’t want something badly. You know the difference. You can want as in“that would be nice”,or you can want as in“gotta have it,no matter what it takes.”it’s only the“gotta have it,no matter what it takes”that can fuel the determination to act.

The“gotta have it”is what lies behind the achievements of all the world’s greats: the Michael Jordans, the Steve Jobs, the Bon Jovis,etc.Their100%intent to succeed in their chosen fields was the foundation of their ability to get there. So too,can it be for you.

32.How does the author introduce the topic?

A.By listing examples.

B.By telling stories.

C.By making comparisons.

D.By analyzing reasons.

33.Why does the author say intent is powerful?

A.It can help people think scientifically.

B.It may bring some incredible effects.

C.It requires passion and perseverance.

D.It makes people different from others.

34.What does the underlined word“it”refer to in paragraph3?

A.The determination to act.

B.The powerful intent.

C.The thing that one wants.

D.The foundation of success.

35.What does the author want to remind readers?

A.“Gotta have it”is more important than determination.

B.Choosing great fields is the way to achieve success.

C.We should figure out what we like in our life.

D.Strong intent is necessary for one’s success.
