Listen to a conversation between two students.
Man:Hey. Sarah. How is it going?
Woman:Not great. It's the student film I've been directing. You know, that project I've been working on for my film class?
Man:Right. You said you were directing a film. So what's wrong?
Woman:Well, the project is due in two days. We were supposed to film a final scene today, but it's raining. The scene is supposed to be set outside, with two characters talking in the park on a beautiful sunny day.
Man:Oh no! What are you going to do?
Woman:Well, I could rewrite the scene I guess, I could revise it so it takes place inside a building instead, maybe here in the student center somewhere.
Man:Why don't you do that?
Woman:I could, but I'm happy with the scene as it's written now. The film has an optimistic happy ending. That's why I wanted the last scene of the movie to be outside on a bright sunny day, because it sets a positive mood.
Man:Oh...l see. Well, the weather is supposed to be better tomorrow, sunny and warm. Why don't you film that scene tomorrow instead?
Woman:Thought of that too. But since the project is due the day after tomorrow, I was planning on using tomorrow to review the film and do any final ending, and...you know, all the last-minute details.
Man:That's true. There wouldn't be much time for that.
Woman:Yeah. Filming tomorrow might mean turning in a project to my professor that's not as polished, not as good as I'd like it to be.
Briefly summarize the problem the speakers are discussing. Then state which
solution you would recommend. Explain the reasons for your recommendation.
The woman is directing a film project which is due in two days. She is supposed to film a scene today but it is raining. In the conversation, they talk about two solutions. The first solution is that she rewrites the scene, but she is happy with the scene as it’s written now because it sets a positive mood. The second solution is that she films it tomorrow, when the weather is better. But she is just planning on using tomorrow to review the film and do any final ending. Well, I would recommend her to choose the second solution. She can tell her professor about the situation and ask for an extension, in this way, she can not only still use the scene that has been written but also have enough time to make the project polished.

Listen to a conversation between two students. Man:Hey. Cindy. You look happy. Making plans for the summer vacation? Woman:I'm just glad the semester is finally over. I just finished my final exam, so I'm taking off for summer vacation tomorrow. Aren't you? Man:I wish. Woman:What do you mean? Man:I have to rewrite the lab report for my biology class. I guess I did it all wrong. So the professor's making me rewrite it before he'll submit a final grade. Woman:I guess that's better than if he just gave you a bad grade on it, right? Man:I guess so. But I was planning on leaving town tomorrow too, and now I'm not sure I can. I spoke with the professor and he gave me two options. I can either turn in the revised report in one week and get my grade, or he said I can wait, you know, taking incomplete in the class and submit the paper next semester in the fall. Woman:So are you going to stay around to revise the report? Man:I could. I'd get the grade for the class on time and I wouldn't have to think about it anymore. But there's a family reunion this weekend. I was really looking forward to it. If I stay around to revise the report, I'll miss the reunion. Woman:Well, maybe you should take your time and work on the report over the summer. You can submit it when you return in the fall semester and get your grade then. Man:That would be fine, but what if I need materials from the library to revise the report? I don't know if I'll be able to find the materials at the library at home. Woman:Hmm... Briefly summarize the problem the speakers are discussing. Then state whichsolution you would recommend. Explain the reasons for your recommendation. The man is going to enjoy his summer vacation and have a family reunion this weekend. The problem is that he is required by the professor to rewrite the lab report for biology class before having a final grade. To solve the problem, the man can rewrite the report either on weekends or during the summer holiday. I prefer the second solution. I believe a qualified report requires more than a weekend to prepare, organize and complete. The shortcoming of lack of material at home can be overcome by borrowing books ahead of time in library. On the other hand, dashing off the report will lose the opportunity of family reunion and ruin the chance of a better score.

例如,考生会听到:“I’ve got a problem”、“I’d like to…but…”

What’s up?Student A: Well, I’m a first year student.Student B: Everything going okay?Student A: Actually no…um…this is a little embarrassing. I think I left my class schedule back in my dorm.Student B: Um…not a good thing to do on the first day of classes.Student A: Yeah… so I’m not sure where my class is. I think I remember it was supposed to be here in Smith Hall.Student B: There is a computer for student use in the student center. You can go over there, look it up and check the room number. But…you’d have to hurry.Student A: Hm… that’s not a bad idea. I could check m y schedule for the whole rest of the day at the same time. I don’t know where any of my other classes are either, but I don’t wanna be late, make a bad impression with the professor on the first day. It’s actually my very first class—Introduction to Psychology.Student B: Psychology? Oh! Okay, you’re definitely in the right building. And if it’s Introduction to Psychology, it’s gonna be a big class, in which case it probably meets in a big lecture hall. There are only three lecture halls in the building, one on every floor. Just check each floor till you find yours. There is an elevator, so you should be able to move fast.Student A: Yeah, but I don’t know what the professor looks like or anything. How will I know whether it’s my class or not? It’d be sort of embarrassing, sticking my head into each lecture hall, asking if I was in the right place.Student B: Well…you might luck out and find it the first time.

It's perfectly possible that the nests found inside the fossilized trees were made by bees 200 million years ago. The arguments used by the skeptics are not convincing. First, it's true we have no fossil remains of actual bees that date to 200 million years ago, but maybe the reason for that is that bees could not be preserved as fossils at that time. Fossil bees have typically been preserved in fossilized tree resin, a sticky liquid produced by trees. However, trees with this type of resin were very rare 200 million years ago. Such trees became common much later. So the fact that we have no bee remains that are 200 million years old doesn’t mean that bees did not exist at that time. Maybe bees existed, but since there were almost no trees producing the right kind of resin, the bees could not be preserved.Second, while it's true that bees have a close mutual relationship with flowering plants today, it's quite possible that bees existed before flowering plants appeared on Earth. Those very early bees might have been feeding on non-flowering plants that preceded flowering plants during evolutionary history. The early bees could have fed on non- flowering plants such as ferns or pine trees. Later when flowering plants evolved, bees may have adapted to feeding on them! And this new relationship between bees and flowering plants may have remained stable ever since.Third, even though the fossilized chambers lack spiral caps, there's chemical evidence that supports the theory that bees built the chambers. Modern bees protect their nest chambers against water by using a special waterproofing substance that has a distinctive chemical composition. When the fossilized chambers were chemically analyzed, it turned out that they contain the same kind of waterproofing material that's used by modern bees.。

There are two possible solutions. The first is to go to the student center and check his schedule on the computer. The second solution is to check the three lecture halls on each floor till he finds the right one. I think the first solution is better for the following reasons. First of all, if he looks up the schedule online, not only he can find where Introduction to Psychology is, he can also get his schedule for the rest of the day. Plus, it’d be really embarrassing to stick his head into each lecture hall, asking if it is the right one. Did bees (a type of insect) exist on Earth as early as 200 million years ago? Such a theory is supported by the discovery of very old fossil structures that resemble bee nests. The structures have been found inside 200- million-year-old fossilized trees in the state of Arizona in the southwestern United States. However, many skeptics doubt that the structures were created by bees. The skeptics support their view with several arguments. No Fossils of Actual Bees First, no fossil remains of actual bees have ever been found that date to 200 million years ago. The earliest preserved body of a bee is 100 million years old—only half as old as the fossilized structures discovered in Arizona. Absence of Flowering Plants A second reason to doubt that bees existed 200 million years ago is the absence of flowering plants in that period. Today's bees feed almost exclusively on the flowers of flowering plants; in fact, bees and flowering plants have evolved a close, mutually dependent biological relationship. Flowering plants, however, first appeared on Earth 125 million years ago. Given the bees’ close association with flowering plants, it is unlikely bees could have existed before that time. Structures Lack Some Details Third, while the fossilized structures found in Arizona are somewhat similar to nest chambers made by modern bees, they lack some of the finer details of bees’ nests. For example, chambers of modern bee nests are closed by caps that have a spiral pattern, but the fossilized chambers lack such caps. That suggests the fossilized structures were made by other insects, such as wood-boring beetles. ProfessorIt's perfectly possible that the nests found inside the fossilized trees were made by bees 200 million years ago. The professor asserts that the arguments used in the reading are not convincing. To begin with, according to the reading passage, no fossil remains of actual bees have been found that date to 200 million years ago. The professor argues that no bee remains that are 200 million years old doesn’t mean that bees didn’t exist at that time. He says maybe bees couldn’t be preserved as fossils at that time. Since there were almost no trees producing the right kind of resin, a sticky liquid produced by trees, the bees could not be preserved. On top of that, the reading passage states that flowering plants were in absence 200 million years ago. On the contrary, the professor claims that it’s quite possible that bees existed before flowering plants appeared on Earth. The professor points out that early bees might have been feeding on non-flowering plants that preceded flowering plants during evolutionary history. Later when flowering plants evolved, bees may have adapted to feeding on them. And this new relationship between bees and flowering plants have remained stable ever since. Lastly, the professor rebuts the reading’s point that the fossilized structures lack some of the finer details of bees’ nests such as the chambers lacking caps by stating that there’s chemical evidence that supports the theory that bees built the chambers.
