"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is a popular saying in the United States. It may be a common saying, but it is not scientifically confirmed. However, a new study adds to evidence that suggests taking a small amount of aspirin can help keep the doctor away.Peter Elwood is with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine in Britain. Forty years ago, he was involved in the first study to explore the effects of aspirin on the prevention of heart disease. Elwood’s team exam ined 47 studies for evidence that aspirin helped cancer patients. They found there’s fairly consistent evidence of a 15 to 20 percent reduction in death and a reduction in cancer’s spread, by low dose(剂量) aspirin. By low dose, he means 81 milligrams. The study followed cancer patients for five years. Elwood says the evidence is strong that aspirin delays death among cancer patients.Elwood’s team are excited to have this evidence from the study. Elwood adds that it is not a cure but a small sign of better things to come, what he calls a little hope and encouragement. "If you asked me personally what I would do if doctors told me I had cancer, I would say I would have no hesitation in taking it. But I do not recommend it to people. I want them to have the evidence and make their own decisions." The only major risk is that aspirin can cause stomach bleeding. But Elwood says it usually does not cause death. He adds that the evidence points to big health benefits of taking a daily aspirin. So, for some people, the pros might overweigh the cons.1. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 1?A. Patients should eat apples.B. Apples are popular with Americans.C. Aspirin can be good for health.D. Doctors should use aspirin instead of apples.2. What does Elwood suggest people do?A. The less aspirin, the better.B. Don’t delay in taking aspirin.C. Taking aspirin is a better way to cure cancer.D. Make decisions in the best interest of their own.3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Aspirin is the best cure for cancer.B. Taking aspirin won’t kill in the long run.C. Taking aspirin does more good than harm.D. The side effect of taking aspirin is strong.【语篇解读】文章介绍每天服用少量的阿司匹林对健康有好处,可以延缓癌症病人的死亡。

Winston Churchill is probably the most popular British prime minister ever. Having served as a soldier and politician, he is often considered among the greatest of Britons. While his heroic stand against the Nazis is well know, there are still a few facts about the popular politician that might surprise you.His CigarsThe classic image of Winston Churchill includes a giant cigar stuck between his lips. Churchill developed his love of cigars as a young man, when he traveled to Cuba. For the rest of his life, he smoked eight or nine cigars every day. However, he almost never took a puff(吸,抽), preferring to chew on the end until it went out, then relight it and start again. To prevent the cigar becoming soggy (湿软的), Churchill invented the "bellybando", a strip of brown paper which could be glued around the end.At any given time, Churchill had 3,000 to 4,000 cigars in his house, mostly his favorite Romeo & Juliet brand. On one occasion, the president of Cuba presented Churchill with 2,400 top-quality cigars, although his security team insisted one cigar from each box be sent off and tested for poison. Perhaps the story that best shows his love of cigars occurred during World War II, when he had a special oxygen mask designed so that he could still smoke his cigar on a high-altitude flight. His Black DogThroughout his life, Churchill probably suffered from depression, which he called his "black dog". At times, his depression was so severe that he didn’t like standing close to a passing train or looking at the ocean from a ship because he feared that he would commit suicide. When he was depressed, Churchill would almost spend a great deal of time in bed andlose his ability to concentrate. However, when not depressed, Churchill was full of energy, usually working and talking until the early hours of the morning. He often described how "all the colors come back into the picture".1. Why did Churchill’s security team insist on checking the cigars?A. To test if they were safe for Churchill.B. To see if they were of the best quality.C. To make sure they were Churchill’s favorite.D. To guarantee they were not out of date.2. Which of the following best shows Churchill’s love of cigars?A. He fell in love with cigars at a young age.B. He smoked many cigars every day.C. He invented the "bellybando".D. He had an oxygen mask specially designed for smoking.3. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?A. Churchill became energetic again.B. Churchill remained depressed.C. Churchill drew colorful pictures.D. Churchill liked to talk about colors.4. What is probably the best title of the passage?A. Achievements of ChurchillB. Anecdotes about ChurchillC. Personalities of ChurchillD.

Unit 1 Women of achievement
When Kansas high school student Blake Hawkins discovered an empty locker at his school,he didn't just fill it with books and equipment—instead, the innovative teen turned it into a soda pop vending machine(自动售货机).Ha wkins explains that the“Soda Locker”vending machine uses a coin acceptor,an LCD screen,a microcontroller board,a magnetic switch, some old video game switches, and batteries.Hawkins explains he had Valley Center High School's support when he was developing the_prototype,and was able to come up with a design that would not damage the existing locker. And he was able to do it for approximately $160 spent on parts. The Soda Locker has a design where no one can remove the control board from the locker and the door swings shut after use to protect it.Furthermore,it's programmed to take exact change only, and to let the operator know when someone is trying to cheat the coin system.Hawkins explains he originally thought about the idea for having a soda pop vending machine in a locker a year ago on his way to history class. While he initially treated it as a joke, he has proven how you can take an idea and turn it into something brilliant. He wrote,“Whether you build your own Soda Locker or not,I hope you're inspired to build whatever project you've come up with!”1.What can we learn about the Soda Locker made by Hawkins?A.It looks nice.B.It is a combination.C.Its soda tastes great.D.Its equipment is advanced.2.What does the underlined phrase “the prototype” in Para graph 3 refer to?A.The locker.
He wrote,“Whether yo u build your own Soda Locker or not, I hope you're inspired to build whatever project you've come up with!”(最后一段最后一句)分析:Whether引导让步状语从句;you're inspired to build...是宾语从句,作hope 的宾语;whatever project you've come up with是宾语从句,作build的宾语。

1.be distributed
空前是情态动词will,故填be distributed。
on a regular basis “定期地”。
3.were loading
根据下文中的“we were doingour ...”
故填were loading。
4.Why
根据下文的“We explained we were doing our ...”
