Passage 1

Listen to the following speaker talking about his college education.

At the age of 17,1 went to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months , I couldn't see the value in it . I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved in their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

Passage 2

Listen to the following speaker talking about Margaret's family travel plan.

She prefers to be more active on holiday and loves walking and playing games on the beach. Margaret and her brother Kevin would like to meet some people of a similar age and think that the best way to do this is to go to disco in the evening. The children are happy with their father's choice of hotel. They don't like to eat in local restaurants and would prefer to eat at the hotel. The family has sent their needs to the Saipan Tourist Office. It offers a free service to holiday-makers who want to visit the island.

Passage 3

Listen to the following speaker talking about American education.

In the United States we emphasize a lot on building a person's leadership, organizational skills , and just everything as a whole . You are not just a study machine . You are someone who needs to develop your talent. If you have any inner talent, they want to just get it out, you know. So if they see potential in you in sports, they will ask you to join a sports team. A lot of people get scholarship because they are excellent in football, or basketball or baseball. They can get scholarship for that, for their college education. And if you are a good leader you can join or start a student club and become the president of the student club, so that's ... And also for many schools it's one of the requirements for students to do community service, meaning to volunteer for businesses, or non-profit organizations, and stuff like that. They must do that in order to earn enough points, and if s one of the requirements for them to graduate.

Passage 4

Listen to the following speaker talking about Canadian National Tower.

If you come to Toronto, Canadian National Tower is a place you must see, taste and experience. Tourists can take glass-faced lifts outside the tower up to the Sky Pod viewing platform at 340 meters. Then it's another 100 meters up to the Observation Decks. There you can see Toronto with a 360 degree viewing, and see as far as Niagara Fall, New York State and more. Tourists can enjoy a fine dinner at world’s highest revolving restaurant, or have a drink at the world ‘s highest bar called Horizon Bar. It seems to me the biggest attraction is the Glass Floor. It is 113 storeys above the ground! Walking on it is like as if you were walking on air. You can do it if you dare! Take another lift from Observation Decks and go up an additional 33 storeys to the Space Deck. It's the world's highest observation gallery. There you can see an even more spectacular view of Toronto.

Passage 5

Listen to the following speaker talking about security changes being made on his school campus.

In the past few weeks, a couple of big changes regarding the school security have taken place. The biggest change is making everyone show ID to enter the campus. Whenever you enter the school, you must have your ID card out and present it to the guard. Guests must make an appointment ahead of time in order to enter the school You may also have noticed that you cannot get back on campus after 6:00 p.m. Some of you leave your bags in your desks while you go off campus to get food or play sports, and then discover you cannot get back inside. Entry after 6:00 p.m. will not be allowed unless you are part of a school event It means you must leave school by 6:00 p.m. I want to emphasize that you need to take note of your surroundings and any unfamiliar people to ensure a safe campus for everyone.

Passage 6

Listen to the following speaker talking about the service in Britain.

I read in the newspapers that Britain has the biggest service industry in Europe: I have-never seen it: This-is strange because “service” is a word we use a lot in English. Most hotels have terrible room service. It's impossible to get a meal in your room after nine o’clock Banks promise a high level of customer service if there’re advertisements, but when I go to the bank there are only two bank clerks available. Of course, at lunch time when lots of people need to go to the banks it's different. Then there’s only one clerk! And in most shops it’s hard to find “service with a smile”.

Last week at the Sasasara Restaurant in Wellington Road, I had my worst ever experience of service in this country! My main course took one hour to arrive at the table. Looking at the food made me feel ill and I suffered three days of food poisoning after I ate it. I have recovered now but I don’t plan to go back for dessert!

Passage 7

Listen to the following speaker talking about a recent survey online.

A recent survey by an online travel agency found that British people were the worst at speaking a foreign language while the Germans were the best. The French were second. The British, Americans and Indians were also the worst at trying local food and adapting to local ideas and customs. Best were the Italians, Spanish and Germans.…

The survey also asked hotel staff to comment on the behavior and politeness of different nationalities. Once again, the Germans were seen as the most polite. Americans, Japanese and Italians came second. Tourists from Ireland, Denmark and Britain were the worst.

This not to say that the Germans were the best at everything, however! When it comes to giving tips the United States came out on top, with Japan a close second. Germans were a long way down the list. Interestingly, Germans were also seen as unfriendly to foreigners in their own country.

Listen to the following speaker talking about the island of Bellonia.

Two years ago, nobody had heard of the island of Bellonia. This beautiful island with a population of 500,000 people had some hotels, sugar plantation, a small fishing industry and not much else. But everything changed with the discovery of oil. Lots of oil! So much, that this tiny country is now making more money than Saudi Arabia! The Bellonia government is looking for ways to make sure that when the oil is eventually gone, the country stays rich.

According to my information a team from the Bank of Beilonia is currently visiting European companies, looking for suitable business partners for many kinds of government projects. The areas include tourism, technology, education, banking, telecommunications and so on. The plain is to invest at least 5 billion over the next five years. Any company which can start business with Bellonia now has a very good chance of making a lot of money over the next twenty years.

Passage 10

Listen to the following speaker talking about the evaluation of teachers.

Every Semester we are given the opportunity to evaluate our teachers. We are supposed to judge their lectures, interest in student problems, methods of assigning work, and general ability to conduct a class.

It is very, difficult to evaluate another person's performance objectively. For example, Viviane recently wrote irresponsible remarks about her teacher because she was failing the course. Her friend Max wrote a marvelous description of the same teacher because he was receiving an A in the course. Both Viviane and Max were not fairly evaluating the teacher. They were influenced by the grades they were earning and were misled in their judgment.

Guided Writing (25分) Directions: Write an English composition in 120–150 words according to the instructions given below in Chinese.

They believe “A foreign language is a weapon in the struggle of life”, Others consider English useless. They feel lear ning English is nothing but a burden to them. In my opinion, English is one of the most important subjects we learn at school. Of all subjects I like English best. There are several reasons why English is my favorite subject. First, English is one of the most widely used languages of the world. Nearly all information on the Internet and over half of the world’s technical materials are in English, thus a good command of English will greatly benefit me in my work. Secondly,it is believed that good English also leads to greater chances and opportunities. In the competition for a well-paid job, the one who can speak English has an advantage over those who cannot. For all these reasons we should not only learn English but master it in the shortest time possible. But perhaps the most unforgettable thing which is really worth mentioning is the lesson given by my Chinese teacher just after she had an accident. One morning just before our Chinese lesson, we were told our Chinese teacher, Miss Liu, had had an accident. One of her legs was badly injured and she couldn’t come t o teach us. While we were planning to visit her after school, we also thought that maybe we would be free to do whatever we wanted during our Chinese lesson, and hoped our homework load would be reduced. But to our surprise, shortly after the bell, Miss Liu, with the help of a stick, came to the door of our classroom. With great respect w all stood up and greeted her. She sat on a chair and began her lesson. She spoke slowly but forcefully. She prepared her lecture quite well and demanded that we do the same. Towards the end of the lesson, we got lots of homework from her. A good teacher is many things to many people. Everyone has definite ideas about what a good teacher is.
