Unit5 阅读理解专练Wild animals are our friends, hut many of them are getting fewer and fewer. We should try to protect them. The four animals below are now in danger.Tibetan AntelopesTibetan antelopes(藏铃羊)are medium-sized animals. They mainly feed on grass. They are usually found in groups of about 20. They are killed for their wool, which is warm, soft and fine and can be made into expensive clothes. Although people can get the wool without killing the animals, people simply kill them before taking the wool. The number of them is dropping year by year. There are less than 75,000 Tibetan antelopes left in the world, down from a million 50 years ago.Golden MonkeysGolden monkeys are mainly found in Sichuan, Gansu, Shanxi provinces and Shengnongjia mountainous area of Hubei Province. Golden monkeys have golden-orange fur. They move around in the daytime, usually in groups of as many as 100 to 200 heads, or 20 to 30 heads. They feed on fruits and young leaves of bamboos. But people are destroying the environment where they live. Trees and bamboos are disappearing, so golden monkeys have less and less to eat.ElephantsElephants are very big and strong. They are bigger than any other animals on land. They are grey and have long trunks and tusks. They have poor eyesight, but very good hearing and smell. They can lift heavy things and break down branches with their trunks. Elephants are very friendly towards each other and towards their neighbours. Normally, they live in a group for many years. Young male elephants do not leave the group until they are about 12 years old. Now, there are very few elephants in the world. The number of them is becoming smaller and smaller because their living areas are used for farming. Also, people hunt them for their tusks. WolvesWolves are not very big. They have grey fur. Wolves have very good eyesight, hearing and smell. Wolves, food is various. They eat animals, insects and snails. They are friendly to each other and never attack people. They do not kill for fun. Wolves arein danger, too. They are losing their living areas because people cut down forests. Soon they will have no home or food.1. " The foreigner was quite 1at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the girl had not 2 him clearly, he said, "Yes, indeed, you speak very well. " 3 the girl still kept saying, "No." In the end, the American boy could not understand and didn't know what to say. What's wrong with the girl's answer? She didn't 4 a compliment(恭维) in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, "Thank you" instead of "No". She 5 understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest. In the west, people will feel proud and 6 when they are praise. So if someone says the 7 you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, "Thank you".In our country we think being modest is a virtue(美德)and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not 8 being proud, so sometimes you should be confident instead of being modest.9 you are modest and say, "No. I'm afraid I can't do it well.”While working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say "No", you will certainly be looked down upon by 10 . When asking for a job, if one says something like "Yes. During this time, it only drinks its mother's milk.Danger: The number of koalas in Australia is getting smaller every year, mainly because of people. People cut down a lot of trees, so many koalas have no places to live in and they don't have enough leaves to eat. There are fewer than 100, 000 koalas in the world. In fact, the polar bear does not have white fur. It just appears to be white. Polar bears have a very good sense of smell. It helps them to find food. During summer, polar bears sleep longer, because they are able to find their food more easily at night. Usually, after a meal, polar bears have a short sleep. A polar bear can have 2-3 babies at a time. They live with their mothers until they are about two-and-a-half years old. However, polar bears will die out soon because of people. There are only 20, 000 to 25, 000 polar bears in the world. The ones that are left are trying to survive today. The number of polar bears is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice-polar bears mostly inhabit(居住于)the sea ice, not the land ice. This is happening because of global warming(全球气候变暖), pollution, hunting and so on.Ordinary people don't care, but great people have the power and want to save tigers, fight for giant pandas and save polar bears. Ordinary people will wait, but great people will find a new world. For me, I will not wait. I will take the bus more often from now on. To show that the number of polar bears is getting smaller.B. To tell people that polar bears will soon have nowhere to live.C. To let people know why polar bears are in danger.D. To talk about polar bears and suggest that people protect animals.CThere are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have traveled to the places, you can go and see a colour film about them, or you can read a travel book.It seems that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective(主观的)idea of travels which their writer has got himself. These books can be useful if the writers share their traveling experiences with others. The second kind are those books which give objective(客观的)information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some place or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the place in detail. Like the first kind, they can be interesting and exciting, but their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eye on its date of publication(出版)because travel is very practical matter and many things change quickly in the 21st century. Finally, you should make sure that it's easy to find the useful information for your travel.( )1.The underlined phrase "a cultured person" means a person with .A. a good appearanceB. a good educationC. a lot of experienceD. a lot of money( )2.The date of publication must be noticed because .A. the prices of travel books may be differentB. the writers of travel books may be differentC. the information in travel books is always the sameD. the information in travel books is always changing( )3.According to the passage, it is best to read before traveling to a place of interest.A. the first kind of travel booksB. the second kind of travel booksC. the third kind of travel booksD. some travel articles in newspaperDAs the saying goes, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." This is the way the charity organization Heifer International(国际小母牛慈善组织)wants to end world hunger. It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was "not a cup, but a cow".Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing(提供)training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International was set up.On Heifer International's website(网站), you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies. With more and more animals, these families will be able to support themselves. Once these families get better lives, they will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources(资源)for programs run by Heifer International to help more families. The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal's first female(雌性) baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals' health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule. However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.( )1 .According to the passage, we know that Dan West .A. set up a team in SpainB. helped people with enough fishC. was a Spanish farmerD. helped set up Heifer International( )2 .Which of the following is NOT TRUE about the charity organization Heifer International?A. Heifer International provides training on animals' health and feeding.( )3.The best title of this passage may be " ".A. Advice on Feeding CowsB. A Cow Instead of a CupC. The Charity OrganizationsD. 译林牛津英语八年级上册Unit 5阅读理解随堂练习(无答案)

译林牛津英语八年级上册Unit 5阅读理解随堂练习(无答案)AWhen I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's place. We' d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal.Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest.Bernie was my father's idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie's wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don't take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life's small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.( ) 1. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling ______.A. relaxedB. worriedC. hungryD. proud( ) 2. How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon?A. They ate it in a polite way.B. They only ate its best part.C. They ate every part of it.D. They shared only one piece.( ) 3. It can be learned from the passage that ______.A. one has to work hard to reach his goalB. a friend in need is a friend in deedC. watermelon is the healthiest fruitD. one should keep work-life balanceBWhen the Audet family turns on the lights at Blue Farm, they are using electricity that comes from cows—cow manure (粪肥), to be specific.Cows produce a lot of wastes. One cow can create 30 gallons of wastes each day. Now imagine the output of over 1,000 cows at Blue Farm. That's really a big amount. When farmers clean their barns, they put the wastes in a big heap, and spread some of them on their fields for fertilizer(肥料). But now places like Blue Spruce Farm have a new way of using cow wastes. They use them to produce electricity. Here's how it works: A big machine moves back and forth cleaning the barn floor. “The cows aren't bothered,” says Marie Audet. “They are animals of habit; they get used to it, and just lift one foot and then another to let it go by.”The machine pushes the manure into a big 600-gallon tank like a small swimming pool. The tank is called a digester (化粪池) because what happens there is just like what happens inside a cow: Bacteria(细菌) get to work and continue to digest the manure.Methane gas (甲烷、沼气)in the atmosphere is known as a “greenhouse” gas because it keeps heat just like a greenhouse does, causing our planet to warm up. That's an environmental concern. But the digester has a good result. Its gas is kept and used to power electric generators (发电机).At Blue Farm, the generators make enough electricity to power 400 homes. The Audet family sells the extra electricity they can't use themselves.( ) 6. We learn from the text that the Audet family is using cow wastes to ______.A. make electricityB. produce fertilizerC. build their farmD. feed the cows( ) 7. It's also very cold and dark. With me is Jim Nightingale, and he is the reason I'm up so early. He passes me a hot cup of coffee. "Not long to wait now," he says. I hope he's right. After a few minutes there is a very weak light in the east, and then I hear a bird singing. It sings very loud and very clear. "That's the robin(知更鸟)," says Jim. A few more birds start singing with the robin and Jim knows the names of them too. Half an hour later, there are more and more birds singing, and it's very loud! Suddenly, all around us the air is full of the sound of birdsong. This is the dawn chorus(晨鸣), and it's beautiful."Wow, this is amazing!" I tell Jim, who is smiling. "Is there a dawn chorus every morning?""Birds can sing any time of the year but the best time is the end of winter and during the spring. This is when the birds sing most.""Really? So, why do they sing?" I ask."Well, there are two reasons," explains Jim. "Most of the songbirds who sing are males. They want to find a female(雌性)so they sing to show how strong they are. The females listen and choose the best singer! The birds also sing to tell other males to go away . They need their own area; they don't like sharing with another male."I listen to the birds; the songs seem too much to me. "Do the birds sing a special song in the morning?""That's a good question," replied Jim. "The successful birds have many kinds of calls and songs. Sometimes they copy the songs of other birds. Unit5 阅读理解专练
Wild animals are our friends, hut many of them are getting fewer and fewer. We should try to protect them. The four animals below are now in danger.
Tibetan Antelopes
Tibetan antelopes(藏铃羊)are medium-sized animals. They mainly feed on grass. They are usually found in groups of about 20. They are killed for their wool, which is warm, soft and fine and can be made into expensive clothes. Although people can get the wool without killing the animals, people simply kill them before taking the wool. The number of them is dropping year by year. There are less than 75,000 Tibetan antelopes left in the world, down from a million 50 years ago.
Golden Monkeys
Golden monkeys are mainly found in Sichuan, Gansu, Shanxi provinces and Shengnongjia mountainous area of Hubei Province. Golden monkeys have golden-orange fur. They move around in the daytime, usually in groups of as many as 100 to 200 heads, or 20 to 30 heads. They feed on fruits and young leaves of bamboos. But people are destroying the environment where they live. Trees and bamboos are disappearing, so golden monkeys have less and less to eat.
Elephants
Elephants are very big and strong. Wolves
Wolves are not very big. They have grey fur. Wolves have very good eyesight, hearing and smell. Wolves, food is various. They eat animals, insects and snails. They are friendly to each other and never attack people. They do not kill for fun. Wolves are
in danger, too. They are losing their living areas because people cut down forests. Soon they will have no home or food.
