The advantages and disadvantages of hosting Olympics As we all know, the 2012 London Olympics ended recently. With the curtains of this grand event, a debate about hosting Olympic Games is going to heat up. Some people consider that the advantages of hosting Olympic Games outweigh the disadvantages. But, the others think it does more harm than good. In my opinion, i think it will bring more good than bad to the host nation of Olympic Games. In other words, it is beneficial to the host nation.
Generally, the advantages of hosting Olympic Games can be seen as follows. Firstly, these events will attract more foreign capital into the host countries. Many foreign investment institutions and individuals are looking forward to these opportunities, hoping that they will make a profit investing. Take Sydney for example, the Olympics 2000 brings about 4 billion dollar’s worth of profit to the Gross National Product. Secondly, with large numbers of tourists coming to this event, the tourism and service industry of host nation will have an opportunity of blooming. To meet the need of foreign guests, the host countries will have to put strength on basic construction and public projects, such as traffic facilities and buildings, which, of course, will improve the living conditions of local residents. Moreover, hosting Olympic Games is beneficial to promote products of the Olympic sponsors, so they will acquire more commercial transactions. For sponsors, the Olympics are one of the best platform for propaganda. Thus, they can get more benefit from it. In addition, with the inflow of tourists and foreign capital, as well as the strengthening of national education, hosting Olympics also helps to raising national income and improving national quality.
However, every coin has two sides. The negative aspects are also apparent. On one hand, it is expensive to host the Olympics and the stadiums and buildings may be wasted after Olympic Games.
