roughly13,000runners into five groups(25)_____(base)on how many minutes they ran per week.Those(26)_____were in the lowest group ran up to50minutes over a seven-day period, and those in the highest need.A.acceptB.individuallyC.destroyD.schemeE.uniqueF.absolutelyG.extraordinaryH.destructionI.presentJ.eventuallyK.point第3页/共19页The common wisdom is that introverts(内向的人)and extroverts(外向的人)do not work well together. This wisdom,as author Jennifer Kahnweiler makes clear in her new book,The Genius of Opposites,is31correct in the sense that cooperation is often going to be difficult, filled with battles and miscommunications, and sometimes deliberate32.Somehow,however,the introvert-extrovert partnerships produced33results.The key to such success, according to Kahnweiler,is the five-step process at the heart of her book. The first step,Kahnweiler argues,is to34each other’s differences. If introverted and extroverted people want to partner, they have to realize they will never change the personality of the other person.Instead, each partner has to make a conscious effort to understand the other. The second step is that battles don’t have to be avoided.Instead, they can be the means through which each partner is challenged by the other;resulting in solutions that are better than those that might have been developed35.The third step is to cast the character.Because there are two very different personalities in the partnership, partners should take on the roles that best fit their36personalities.Kahnweiler’s fourth step is to37the dislike. Two people with opposite personalities must work on learning to respect and like each other as much as possible. The fifth and final step is that each can’t offer everything.Introvert-extrovert consulting partnerships are often powerful because neither partner could offer customers all they want—but the two partners working together are able to38a much more various but complementary(互补的) product or service. For each step,Kahnweiler covers why that particular step is important. Also,Kahnweiler writes,a major conflict can actually be a turning39in the relationship, paving the way to a productive cooperation. However, battles can also deal fatal blows to introvert-extrovert cooperation. If partners don’t bring out the obvious problems, the result can40destroy the partnership. The Genius of Opposites is filled with stories of conflicts, most resolved through an effort at communication and a foundation of respect.III.Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or BDirections:Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)The composing career of Albert Roussel got off to a wayward start, and received one of its biggest advances from a lie.Roussel was orphaned at the age of eight and went to live with his grandfather. He built on the music he had learned from his mother, entertaining himself by reading through the family music collection and playing operatic selections and popular songs on the piano.Three years later Roussel’s grandfather died, and his mother’s sister took him in.Her husband arranged for young Albert to take piano lessons.Summer vacations at a Belgian seaside resort added a second love to his life—the sea.He studied to be a naval cadet(军官学校学员),but still made time to study music. In the French Navy, while he was stationed on a cruiser based at Cherbourg,he and two friends found the time to play the piano trios(三重奏)of Beethoven and other composers.Roussel also began composing. At the Church of the Trinity in Cherbourg on Christmas Day1892,he had his first public performance as a composer with the performance of his Andante for string trio and organ. That success encouraged Roussel to write a wedding march, and one of his fellow naval officers offered to show it to an outstanding conductor,Edouard Colonne. When Roussel’s friend returned with the manuscript(手稿),he reported that Colonne had advised Roussel to give up his naval career and devote his life to music. Not long afterward,at the age of25,Roussel did just that.He applied the self-discipline, conciseness, and spirituality that he had developed in the navy to his composing and became a major force in twentieth century French music. As for Eduoard Colonne’s inspiring advice that Roussel第6页/共19页devote his life to music—Roussel’s navy friend later admitted that he had made it up and that he had never even shown Roussel’s manuscript to the conductor.56.From“a wayward start”in Paragraph1,we know Albert Roussel’s composing career_____.A.was a great success at firstB.was inspired early in every wayC.was unpredictable in the beginningD.was a happy one because of a lie57.Who first brought music to Roussel’s life?A.His mother.B.His grandfather.C.His piano teacher.D.His fellow naval officer.58.Why did Roussel join the Navy?A.He didn’t want to live with his mother’s sister.B.He loved the sea because of his holidays.C.He wanted to practice music with his friends.D.He thought it could help him create music.59.The following factors except_____led to his success as a composer.A.his love for musicB.the conductor’s inspiring adviceC.his navy friend’s lieD.the good qualities acquired in the navy(B)GETTING A GRANTWho pays? The local education authority(LEA)for the area in which the student is living.Who can get this money?Anyone who gets a place on a first degree course, although a student who has already attended a course of advanced further education may not.Students must also have been resident in the UKfor at least three years, which can exclude some students from overseas.SPECIAL CASES第7页/共19页If a student has worked before going to college?A student who is26or more before the course starts and who has worked for at least three of the previous six years will get extra money–£155a year if26,increasing to a maximum of£615at29or more.If a student is handicapped?LEAs will give up to£500to help meet extra expenses–such as buying a tape recorder for a blind student, extra heating or special food.Banking? Most of the big banks offer special services to students who open accounts(in the hope that they will stay with the bank when they become rich officials).A student won’t usually have to pay bank charges as long as the account stays in credit. Some banks allow students to overdraw by£100or so,and still don’t make charges(though they do charge interest).60.The underlined phrase“a grant”in the first line most probably means_____.A.bank interestB.a credit cardC.an education feeD.financial aid61.A31-year-old nurse wishes to qualify as a doctor at a university. She has worked since she was25.How much extra money will she get a year?A.None.B.£155.C.£615.D.£515.62.A big bank offers a new student special services because_____.A.they need student accounts badlyB.they charge students extra interestC.they know he can get money regularlyD.they hope he’ll be a potential customer(C)Publicity offers several benefits. There are not costs for message time or space. An ad in prime-time television may cost$250,000to$5,000,000or more per minute, whereas a five-minute report on a network newscast would not cost anything.Publicity reaches a mass audience within a short time and new products or company policies are widely known.Credibility about messages is high, because they are reported in independent media.A newspaper review of a movie has more believability than an ad in the same paper, because the reader associates independence with objectivity.Similarly, people are more likely to pay attention to news reports than to ads.For example,Women’s Wear Daily has both fashion reports and advertisements.Readers spend time reading the stories, but they skim through the ads.Furthermore, there may be10commercials during a half-hour television program or hundreds of ads in a magazine.Feature stories are much fewer第8页/共19页in number and stand out clearly.Publicity also has some significant limitations.A firm has little control over messages, their timing, their placement,or their coverage by a given medium. It may issue detailed news releases and find only portions mentioned by the media, and media have the ability to be much more critical than a firm would like. For example,in1982,Procter&Gamble faced a massive publicity problem over the meaning of its123-year-old company logo.To fight this negative publicity, the firm had a spokesperson appear on Good Morning America to disprove the rumor(谣言).The false rumors were temporarily put to rest. However,in1985,publicity became so troublemaking that Procter&Gamble decided to remove the logo from its products.A firm may want publicity during certain periods, such as when a new product is introduced or new store opened, but the media may not cover the introduction or opening until after the time it would aid the firm.Similarly, media determine the placement of a story;it may follow a report on crime or sports. Finally, the media decide whether to cover a story at all and the amount of coverage to be devoted to it.63.All of the following advantages of publicity are mentioned EXCEPT_____.A.time savingB.attentivenessC.profitabilityD.credibilitypared with ad,news report or featuring stories are more_____.A.believableB.clearC.dependentD.subjective65.The example of“Procter&Gamble”is given to show_____.A.the efficient way of disproving rumorsB.the importance of a spokespersonC.the interaction between firms and mediaD.the negative effect of publicity66.What’s the author’s attitude towards publicity?A.Doubtful.B.Objective.C.Passive.D.Supportive.Section CDirections:Read the following passage.Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once.Note that there are two more sentences than you need.A.The discount is by far the better, but the supposedly clever students viewed them as equivalent.B.So retailers often take advantage of shoppers’preference for discounting.C.One is to confuse them with double discounting.D.The main reason is that most people are useless at fractions(分数).E.They even control some irrelevant factors to make the studies more convincing.F.Marketing types can draw lessons beyond just pricing, says Mr Rao.第9页/共19页The Psychology of DiscountingWhen retailers(零售商)want to persuade customers to buy a particular product, they typically offer it at a discount.According to a new study to be published in the Journal of Marketing, they are missing a trick.A team of researchers, led by Akshay Rao of the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, looked at consumers’attitudes to discounting.Shoppers, they found, much prefer getting something extra free to getting something cheaper.67.Consumers often struggle to realize, for example, that a50%increase in quantity is the same as a 33%discount in price. They overwhelmingly assume the former is better value. In an experiment, the researchers sold73%more hand lotion(护手霜)when it was offered in a bonus pack than when it carried an equivalent discount. This numerical blind spot remains even when the deal clearly favours the discounted product. In another experiment, this time on his undergraduates,Mr Rao offered two deals on loose coffee beans: 33%extra free or33%off the price.68.Studies have shown other ways in which retailers can exploit consumers’mathematical illiteracy.69.People are more likely to see a bargain in a product that has been reduced by20%,and then by an additional25%,than one which has been subject to an equivalent,one-off,40%reduction.70.When advertising a new car’s efficiency, for example,it is more convincing to talk about the number of extra miles per gallon it does, rather than the equivalent percentage fall in fuel consumption. There may be lessons for regulators too.Even well-educated shoppers are easily foxed.Sending everyone back to school for maths refresher-courses seems out of the question. But more noticeably displayed unit prices in shops and advertisements would be a great help.IV.Summary WritingDirections:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more e your own words as far as possible. An Italian company has told staff to stop sending any internal emails for a week in an effort to reduce stress levels.Home textiles(纺织品)company Gabel, based in the northern Como region, asked an expert to interview its employees about what their main concerns were at work, the local La Provincia di Como website reports. Many said that managing the huge volume of internal emails was a burden during the第10页/共19页working day. That made the company’s management propose a solution, which—somewhat ironically (讽刺地)—was sent to all staff in an email.“Together we will begin the following experiment, which will take us back in time to when people talked more,”managing director Emilio Colombo wrote, declaring an“email free”week until13 November.“We invite you not to use email for internal communications(between colleagues at the same location),in favour of a more direct and immediate contact.”The company’s president,Michele Moltrasio, tells the BBC it hasn’t been easy to stop such a deep-rooted practice, even temporarily, but that employees have welcomed the challenge.“They are rediscovering the pleasure of meeting and talking rather than writing,”he says. And that includes Mr Moltrasio, who is avoiding emails along with everyone else.“Even if from next week we all go back to using email, these days of experimentation are very worthwhile,to understand and rethink the methods and pace of working,”he says.Several recent studies have found that a high volume of emails raises stress levels at work.In2013, researchers said that a full inbox(收件箱)led to peaks in people’s blood pressure and heart rate. And last year,a study at the University of British Columbia found that limiting email use during the day lowered people’s stress levels significantly.第Ⅱ卷(共40分)I.TranslationDirections:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.你有可能劝服他不去美国吗?(persuade)2.这个会议只是浪费了大家时间,根本什么决定都没做成。

As Bolt and seven other competitors ducked into their starting crouches, a bottle sailed from the first row of the stands at Ol ympic Stadium. It harmlessly bounced in the lane belonging to Yohan Blake a nd didn’t appear to cause a distraction(分心) to the runners, who started a moment later. The thrower’s lack of distance was a blessing. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and research has showed that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable. The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents’ and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find a flaw in themselves.Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does notbecome work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters’ performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided in spite of the outcome. Research shows that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.1. According to the passage sport is positive for young people in that _____.A. it can help them learn more about societyB. it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselvesC. it can provide them with valuable experiencesD. it enables them to find flaws in themselves2. According to the passage parents and coaches should _____.A. help children to win every gameB. enable children to understand the positive aspect of sportsC. pay more attention to letting children enjoy sportsD. train children to deal with stress3. The author’s purpose in writing the passage is _____.A. to emphasize the importance of positive reinforcement to childrenB. to persuade young children not to worry about criticismC. to discuss the skill of combing criticism with encouragementD. to teach young athletes how to avoid burnoutBThe healthy adolescent boy or girl likes to do the real things in life, to do the things that matter. He would rather be a plumber’s mate and do a real job that requires doing than learn about hydrostatics(流体静力学) sitting at a desk, without understanding what practical use they are going to be. A girl would rather look after the baby than learn about child care. Logically we should learn about things before doing them and that is probably why the experts enforce this in our educational system. But it is not the natural way —nor, in my view, the best way. The adolescent wantsto do things first for only then does he appreciate the problems involved and wantto learn more about them. They do these things better in primitive life, for there at puberty(青春期) the boy joins his father in making canoes, patching huts, going out fishing or hunting. He is serving his apprenticeship in the actual accomplishments of life. It is not surprising that anthropologists(人类学家) find that the adolescents of primitive communities do not suffer from the same neurotic(神经质的) “difficulties”as thoseof civilized life. This is not, as some assume, because they are permitted more sexual freedom, but because they are given more natural outlets for their native interests and powers and are allowed to grow up freely into a full life of responsibility in the community. In the 19th century this was recognized in the apprenticeship system, which allowed the boy to go out with the master carpenter, or ploughman, to engage in the actual work of carpentry or roof-mending, and so to learn his trade. In some agricultural colleges a t the present time young men have to do a year’s work ona farm before their theoretical training at college. The great advantage of this system is that it lets the apprentice see the practical problems before he sets to work learning how to solve them, and he can therefore take a more intelligent interestin his theoretical work.Since more knowledge of more things is now required in order to cope with the adult world, the period of growing-up to independence takes much longer than it didin a more primitive community, and the responsibility for such education, which formerly was in the hands of the parents, is now necessarily undertaken by expertsat school. But that should not make us lose sight of the basic principle, namely the need and the desire of the adolescent to engage responsibly in the real pursuitsof life and then to learn how—to learn through responsibility, not to learn before responsibility.4. According to the author, what is the natural way of education?A. Doing things while learning.B. Doing things as an apprentice.C. Doing things before learning.D. Learning practical knowledge first.5. The main advantage of the natural way of education, whether in primitive or modern times, is that learners ________.A. can learn the trade through solving problems at workB. can work with their masters throughout their learningC. are given more freedom in doing things and learningD. are given opportunities to develop their interest first6. According to the context, “this” in the third paragraph refers to ________.A. the way of learning in primitive communitiesB. the difficulties modern adolescents experienceC. the amount of freedom in learning in primitive lifeD. the kind of skills boys learned from their father7. Which of the following sums up the author’s main point?A. The apprenticeship system was effective in learning.B. Students should be given more freedom in learning.C. Students develop their interest through learning.D. Learning to solve problems is learning through responsibility.CIn some urban centers, workholism is so common that people do not consider it unusual: they accept the lifestyle as normal. Government workers in Washington D. C., for example, frequently work sixty to seventy hours a week. They don’t do this because they have to; they do it because they want to.Workholism can be a serious problem. Because true workaholics (工作狂) would rather work than do anything else, they probably don’t know how to relax. Is workholism always dangerous? Perhaps not. There are, certainly, people who work well under stress. Some studies show that many workaholics have great energyand interest in life. Their work is so pleasurable that they are actually very happy. For most workaholics, work and entertainment keep them busy and creative. Why do workaholics enjoy their jobs so much? There are several advantages to work. Of course, it provides people with paychecks, and this is important. But it offers more than financial security. It provides people with self-confidence; they have a feeling of satisfaction when they’ve produced a challenging piece of work and are able to say, “I made that.” Psychologists claim that work gives people an identity through participation in work, they get a sense of self and individualism. In addition, most jobs provide people with a socially acceptable way to meet others. Perhaps some people are compulsive about their work, but their addiction seems to be a safe-even an advantageous-one.8. The passage indicates that workaholics ______.A. just know work but nothing elseB. find their work provide them more satisfaction and self-confidence than howmuch they are paidC. are willing to work hard for long hours without payD. has the work with more responsibility than others9. One of the reasons that some people are not willing to qui t their jobs even in their eighties and nineties is that ______.A. they are in the need of financial securityB. they long for a sense of identity and being accomplishedC. they would rather work than be disturbed by domestic affairsD. they may have health problems from sheer boredom10. This passage is mainly about ______.A. people who are absorbed in their work may enjoy movies, sports and other kindsof entertainmentB. workaholics are usually successful people, but their lives are in a messC. workholism can lead to serious problems but it can also create a joyful lifeD. those who work even under difficult conditions may be very happy11. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A. in the eyes of all the common people workaholics are peculiarB. workaholics are as addicted to their job as other people are to drugs or alcoholC. a piece of challenging work may provide the workaholics a sense of satisfactionD. to workaholics, work is the sole source of happinessDA friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: Life isn’t fair. It’s disappointing, but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t.One of the nice things about surrendering(屈从) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt a different hand; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel victimized or unfairly treated. The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel compassion(热情) for others and for ourselves. And compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers loving-kindness to everyone it touches. The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basicfact. You may be surprised that it can persuade you out of self-pity and into helpful action.12. The writer thought of his friend’s question as a good one because _______.A. he also wanted to know who held such an opinionB. it made him recall something during his childhoodC. like his friend, he also thought life was unfairD. he learned something from the question as a youngster13. Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will ________.A. keep us from making everything perfectB. keep us from doing everything in our powerC. make us face unfair treatment bravelyD. make us know it’s our duty to perfect things14. The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that ________.A. it’s nice to accept the injustice of lifeB. it’s nice to surrender to the lifeC. we should not surrender to the lifeD. we should not feel sorry for everything15. In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact”refers to the fact that _______.A. you should not pity for othersB. life isn’t and won’t be fairC. compassion is heartfelt emotionD. pity is a self-defeating emotion四、任务型阅读Do you love traveling? If the answer is yes, then have you ever thought about why? You may maintain that traveling can help you expand your scope of knowledge, especially geographical and historical learning. It will provide more chances for you to enjoy food and try on clothes that you otherwise cannot possible have. A famous English author Francis Bacon (1561-1626) makes a point when he says that, “Travel, in the younger sort, is a pa rt of education; in the elder, a part of experience.”Evidence of leisure travel can be traced as far back as ancient Babylon. This year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the 1 billionth tourist willcross an international boundary before the end of this month. That means that one in seven people on the planet traveled this year, something that would not have been possible a few decades ago. Around 20 years ago only the rich could travel. While the US and France remain the two largest destinations for world travel, experts say much of the explosive growth in tourism has been to countries like Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and the Ivory Coast, which weren’t even on the world tourism map a decade ago. The top five destinations in the world, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, are Paris, London, New York, the Mediterranean, Turkey.Several factors have led to the boom in world travel. The prosperity (富裕) of people in Asia is one factor. People in Asian developing countries have lifted their incomes above middle-class levels in the past few years. And a lot of them have used their new wealth to travel. In addition, travel costs have been reduced thanks to the rapid development of transportation, and competition between airlines to give customers the best prices.五、书面表达请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇 150 词左右的文章。

Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Rosalind Franklin always liked facts. She was logical and precise, and impatient with things that were otherwise. She decided to become a scientist when she was 15. She passed the examination for admission to Cambridge University in 1938, and it sparked a family crisis. Although her family was well-to-do and had a tradition of public serviceand charity, her father disapproved of university education for women. He refused to pay. An auntstepped in and said Franklin should go to school, and she would pay for it. Franklin?s mother also tookher side until her father finally gave in.She was invited to King?s College in London to join a team of scientists. The leader of the team assigned her to work on DNA with a graduate student. Franklin?s assumption was that it was her ownproject. The laboratory?s second-in-command, Maurice Wilkins, was on vacation at the time, and whenhe returned, their relationship was puzzling. He assumed shewas to assist his work; she assumed she?dbe the only one working on DNA. They had powerful personality differences as well: Franklin direct, quick, decisive, and Wilkins shy, hesitant, and passive. In 1953, Wilkins changed the course of DNA history by disclosing, without Franklin?s permission, her Photo 51 to competing scientist James Watson, who was working on his own DNA model with Francis Crick at Cambridge. Upon seeing the photograph, Watson said, “My jaw fell open and my pulse began to race,” according to author Brenda Maddox who wrote the book Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA.The two scientists did in fact use what they saw in Photo 51 as the basis for their famous model of DNA, which they published on March 7, 1953, and for which they received a Nobel Prize in 1962. Crick and Watson were also able to take most of the credit for the finding: they included a footnote acknowledging that they were “stimulated by a general knowledge” of Franklin?s and Wilkin?s unpublished contribution, when much of their work was rooted in Franklin?s photo and findings. Franklin didn?t know that these men based their article on her research, and she didn?t complain either, likely as a result of her upbringing. Franklin “didn?t do anything that would invite criticism… (that was) bred into her,” Maddox said.66. Wilkins? relationship with Franklin was characterized by __________.A. unity and harmonyB. confusion and competitionC. cooperation and miscommunicationD. misunderstanding and conflict67. What does Watson mean by saying “My jaw fell openand my pulse began to race”?A. He was confused that Crick had not made this discovery.B. He was surprised that Wilkins had discovered this information.C. He was satisfied with the importance of Photo 51.D. He was anxious about the progress Wilkins and Franklin had made.68. What is Brenda Maddox?s main intention according to the quote in the last paragraph?A. To re-evaluate the importance of the DNA model.B. To criticize King?s College and Cambridge.C. To emphasize Franklin?s importance in science.D. To deny Watson?s and Crick?s contribution to science.69. Franklin?s career as a scientist demonstrates _________.A. that her work was pointing at the most difficult problemB. that she was the only female scientist during the periodC. the importance of DNA in modern scienceD. that perseverance leads to success and recognition of field scientists(B)ReviewsCultual Breaks by Brian AldissReviewed by Paul KincaidBrian Aldiss is an amazing and frustrating writer. When he is on song, hisstyle is forceful, disturbing and delectable. But he is a restless writer. Hecame into his own in the enthusiastic and experimental atmosphere of theNew Wave, and he has been driven to try the new and thedifferent eversince. That he is still experimenting now, 50 years after his first appearance, is a measure of a man who has never been prepared to settleback on his laurels. The Secrets of Jin-Shei by Alma AlexanderReviewed by Donna McMahonWith so many fantasy novels using European-derived settings and mythology, ancient China makes a refreshing change. The landscape istempting and yet familiar enough to feel very real, and the author usesmagic sparingly, in ways appropriate to her society. This and the complexdetail put into the backdrop makes the novel feel very much like historicalfiction.Straken by Terry BrooksReviews by Nathan BrazilThe third novel in the High Druid of Shannara series jumps straight backinto the story where it left off. It continues the quest of unlikely heroPenderrin Ohmsford. Now equipped with the means to break in –andback out- of the Forbidding, where his aunt, the overthrown Ard Phys ofDruids, is stranded, Pen must first get back to Paranor. His rescue attemptcan only begin from within the chamber where GrianneOhmsford disappeared. Unfortunately, this will deliver him straight into the hands ofthose responsible for his aunt?s disappearance.70. The reviewer admires Brian Aldiss? ability to ___________.A. write so many novelsB. continue to be inventive in his writingC. write disturbing plotsD. have a writing career spanning over four decades71. Why does the setting of Jin-Shei appeal to the reviewer?A. It is a good science of fiction setting.B. It is mysterious.C. It is a less common choice of setting.D. It is very magical.72. Terry Brook?s novel continues a series on ___________.A. the adventures of an unsuspecting hero and his attempts to rescue his auntB. a quest about the High Druid of Shannara in a secret chamber in ParanorC. the disappearance of a druid which foils the plans of the enemiesD. liberating a stranded aunt who is key to the knowledge of the Forbidding(C)Aisling?s mother died at midsummer. She had fallen sick so suddenly that some of the villagers wondered if the fairies had come and taken her, for she was still young and beautiful. She was buried three days later beneath the hawthorn tree(山楂树) behind the house, just as twilight was darkening the sky.Maire Solanya, the village greenwitch, came that evening to perform the old rituals over the grave. She stood at the foot ofthe mound of black soil. Aisling and her father stood at the head of it, resting on the simple headstone, was the burning candle. Aisling?s father had lit it shortly after Elinor died, and it would burn all night. The gravestone was a plain piece of slate carved with her name: Elinor. Grass and tree roots would grow up around it as the years passed, until it would seem as if it had always been there.Maire Solanya said in her low, clear voice, “Life to life, from breath to breath, we remember Elinor.” She held a round loaf of bread in her hands. She tore off a small piece and ate it, chewing deliberately, before handing the loaf to Aisling?s father. He pulled off his own piece, then passed it to his daughter. It was still warm, and it smelled like her mother?s kitchen after baking. But it hadn?t come from her mother?s hands, and that realization made a lump rise in her throat. The bread was tasteless.Maire Solanya took the loaf from her, its crust(面包皮) gaping open, and placed it on the gravestone next to the candle. Aisling couldn?t shake the feeling that her mother had merely gone out on an errand and would come home at any moment and wonder what the three of them were doing. It didn?t seem possible that she was buried there, at the foot of the hawthorn tree, in the ground. It was easier to believe the village rumors than to sit with the ache inside herself. She remembered those rumors now, while she stood with her father and Maire Solanya in a tense silence. Everyone had always said that Elinor had some magic in her, and everyone knew that fairies – if they existed – were drawn to that. So Aisling?s father had ordered all the old rituals, even though he did not believe in them, just in case. She was not entirely sure what she herself believed, but she knew that her mother would want them to dothese rituals for her, and that was enough. When the sun slipped below the horizon, the greenwitch said, “Sleep in peace, Elinor,”and scattered a gold powder over the grave to bind Elinor to the earth. On the freshly turned soil, the gold glittered like fairly dust.73. Aisling and her family are most likely __________.A. fairlies in disquiseB. simple village folkC. wealthy farmersD. experienced bakers74. Maire Solanya performed the rituals in order to __________.A. express thanks to the fairiesB. protect the hawthorn treeC. respect Elinor?s wishesD. capture Elinor?s spirit75. Which of the following does not describe Elinor?A. A believer in magic.B. Practical.C. Skilled at baking.D. Youthful.76. Which statement best describes Aisling?s belief in fairies?A. She is uncertain and finds the idea unsettling.B. She finds the idea comforting but is unsure.C. She is certain they exist and wishes they would bring back her mother.D. She believes strongly in the power of their rituals but not in their existence.77. Why did Aisling find the bread “tasteless”?A. It reminded her of her mother?s absence.B. It was a terribly rude thing to eat at her mother?s funeral.C. Solanya was really a poor baker in the village.D. There had not been sufficient ingredients to make the bread.Section CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. How was it that an American ship came to be sunk by American mines in a port held by American forces?Built in1931, the luxury liner SS President Coolidge was a 10-year veteran(退伍军人) of the Pacific before she was pressed into service by the military and converted to carry troops. On October 26, 1942, towards the end of her first year of World War II service, the Coolidge hit an American mine in the east entrance of the Segond Channel on Espiritu Santo, one of the islands of the New Herbrides(now Vanuatu), and sank in 36 meters of water.Though all but two of the 5000 officers and men aboard were saved, the loss of the ship was a military scandal. She had escaped the Japanese during the worst part of the war in the Pacific, only to be lost because of a series of disastrous American mistakes. The master of the Coolidge, Henry Nelson, claimed he hadn?t been warned that the harbor was mined. Worse, in terms of wartime security, neither of the two US destroyers the Coolidge had encountered had challenged her. Nor had they relayed the vital information about the mines. “The first warning was from a signal station further in the harbor telling me to stop, that we were approaching danger,” he wrote.…I, in turn, stopped the engines and backed the engines, butwith the speed we were moving, we still went too far and we struck two mines. I immediately, with the speed we had left, headed the ship to the beach, and ordered “abandon ship ”, which was done and completed in 45 minutes.?…No one mentioned to me, no one informed me, that there was a mine field in Espiritu Santo. Had there been some knowledge of mines, I never would have approached anywhere visible.?Captain Nelson was exonerated(免罪) by a court of inquiry but those responsible did not escape blame. The port director?s office at Noumea and the inefficiency of an experienced commanding officer of a navy patrol(巡逻队) and pilot boat were blamed.Today, the Coolidge is one of the world?s best wreck dives. Much of her original luxury decoration remains, including The Lady, perhaps the most photographed underwater icon in the world. Military equipment she was transporting can also still be seen.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)78. The ship was “pressed into service by the military” suggests that it was ______________.79. What caused the sinking of the ship?80. Why did the ship still hit the mines after the captain stopped the engines?81. Why was the sinki ng of this ship a “scandal”?第II卷(共47分)I. Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to the patients at the clinic. One evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful-looking man. He’s hardly taller than my eight-year-old son. “Good evening. I’ve come to see if you’ve a room. I came for a treatment this morning from the eastern shore, and there’s no bus till morning.” He told me he’d been hunting for a room since noon but with no success. “I guess it’s my face„I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments„” For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: “I could sleep in this chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.” I told him we would find him a bed. When I had finished the dishes, I talked with him. He told me he fished for a living to support his five children, and his wife, who was hopelessly crippled (残疾的) from a back injury. He didn’t tell it by way of complaint. Next morning, just before he left, as if asking a great favor, he said, “Could I come back and stay the next time?” He added, “Your children made me feel at home.” On his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As a gift, he brought a big fish and the largest oysters (牡蛎) I had ever seen. I knew his bus left at 4:00 a.m. and I wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us. In the years he came to stay overnight with us and there was never a time that he did not bring us vegetables from his garden. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned how to accept the bad without complaint when facing the misfortune.
