One early morning last winter, someone broke into Shawn Marceau’s truck. That wasn’t particularly unusual—thieves had already hit him three times in recent months, even as the truck was parked outside his home in White Swan, Washington. This time they made off with a laptop, some riflescopes, and, unbeknownst to Marceau at the time, an American flag.

But this wasn’t just any flag. It had belonged to his son, 22-year-old Marine lance corporal(海军陆战队一等兵) Joe Jackson. The flag had been signed by each member of Jackson’s platoon at the beginning of their deployment and had hung over

his bed for his entire tour of duty in Afghanistan. Jackson was killed in Helmand province in 2011 when he stepped on an bomb. His father frequently took the flag to memorials and veterans’ (老兵)events to share his son’s story. It wasn’t until several weeks after the break-in, when he was getting organized for an annual memorial rifle shoot honoring Jackson, that Marceau realized the neatly folded flag was gone.

Marceau reached out to friends and family, asking them to search for the flag wherever they could. Nothing. He went to the rifle memorial, on April 21, without the flag.

In a last-ditch effort, the heartbroken fa ther took to Facebook. “I would appreciate it if all my friends could share this note.” he wrote, including a photo of the flag. “Any information would be great. No questions asked.” By May 7, there were around 40,000 reposts. Unfortunately, the flag was still nowhere to be found.

Soon enough, there were other flags. A 9/11 firefighter sent one to Marceau signed by dozens of his colleagues. A Special Forces sergeant major sent a flag he’d taken with him on missions around the world. Marceau, a retired Marine himself and the son and grandson of veterans, cherished these gifts while continuing to pray for the return of Jackson’s flag.

Still waiting for those prayers to be answered, Marceau went about his routine as normal. He visited his son’s grave. When he got to Jackson’s grave that morning, there was something there: a flag. When he got closer, he noticed the signatures—black ink on each of the white stripes. This was his son’s flag.

21. Why the flag was so important to Marceau?

A. Because it was very expensive.

B. Because there were signatures of each member of Jackson’s platoon.

C. Because it was a gift from his son.

D. Because it was essential to the memorials and veterans’ events

22. From whom did not Marceau receive flags?

A. A 9/11 firefighter

B. A Special Forces sergeant major

C. The thief

D. A retired Marine

23. Which of the following is right according to the passage?

A. Marceau realized the neatly folded flag was gone as soon as it was stolen.

B. Marceau tried hard to find the flag.

C. People were indifferent to the flag.

D. Only Marceau’s son, Jackon, was a veteran in his family.

Last July, a brutal heat wave in California caused a spike in electricity demand, leaving more than 100,000 people without power. Then, just two weeks later, the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water warned residents to support themselves for the possibility of future rolling blackouts(滚动式灯火管制).

Keeping a power grid(电力网) stable and efficient at times of peak demand is a huge challenge. While solar offers a low-emission option, it doesn’t provide 24-hour power, even on cloudless days. Meanwhile, California’s push for solar has been accompanied by the net loss of 789 megawatts of reliable natural gas capacity that was available to meet peak loads.

The state’s painful experience in managing peak electricity demand demonstrates the challenge of depending too much on renewable energy. While battery storage has been mentioned for decades, it’s still largely unproven for residential and, further out, for commercial and industrial power needs and remains significantly more expensive than other sources of power.

So where do we turn? The answer may be in the very fuel California has been attempting to gradually decline —natural gas. In fact, there is a case that wind and solar generation requires natural gas to enable their use. One study across 26 countries found that a one percent increase in the use of natural gas coincided with a nearly equal increase in the use of renewables.

24. Why does the writer mention California and Los Angeles in the first paragraph?

A. To figure out the crisis of electricity demand during the peak demand

B. To praise the people there for their independence.

C. To show the power of the Los Angeles Department.

D. To tell us the life in these two area is difficult.

25. According to the author, solar energy can ____

A. provide power continuously.

B. meet the demand of our daily life.

C. be relatively low-cost.

D. low the emissions

26. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Solar energy: inefficiency

B. Renewables: a clean world

C. Natural gas: a reliable partner

D. Traditional fuels: trouble maker

While U.S. administrators and airlines remain attentive to the investigation into the Ethiopian Airlines crash, the Sunday’s crash of a Boeing 737 Max 8, the second in less than six months, involving the world’s fastest-selling passenger plane, officials here and in Europe said they are confident that pilot training, maintenance practices and safeguards in place will prevent a catastrophe such as the one that killed 157 people in Ethiopia on Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration(FAA, 联邦航空管理局) issued a “continued airworthiness notification” to the international community Mond ay, meant to convey its confidence in the American-made jetliner.

The notification essentially means that U.S. administrators believe the planes are safe, but they will take action if they receive information that indicates otherwise.

“The FAA continuously assesses and oversees the safety performance of U.S. commercial aircraft,” Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said in a conference call with reporters regarding President Trump’s budget. “If the FAA identifies an issue that affects safety, the department will take immediate and appropriate action.”

Questions about the plane were raised in last October, when Lion Air Flight 610 plunged into the Java Sea in Indonesia killing all 189 passengers and crew aboard.

Both flights went down shortly after takeoff and appeared to have similar flight paths. Airlines and administrators in Ethiopia, China and several other countries announced they were temporarily grounding the Max 8 jets. But in the United States and Europe, administrators, industry groups and Boeing all said it was too soon to draw any conclusions.

Some countries and airlines have grounded the plane, and the decision reflects

fears about their unfamiliarity with the new technology and the potential fallout from a catastrophe —particularly for new and smaller carriers, analysts said. For U.S. administrators, the bar for taking such a dramatic step is much higher, they said.

“I don’t think that we have concrete data to justify it at this point,” said John Cox, a former pilot and an airline-safety consultant with the Washington-based aviation-safety consulting firm Safety Operating Systems. “Grounding an airplane is a big step and so we want to take it very cautiously —only if there is justification for it.”

27. How many people died in the crash since last October?

A.157

B.610

C.189

D.346

28. What does the underlined word “ground” mean in this passage?

A.soil

B.base

C.restrict

D.establish

29. What will the U. S. administrators do next EXCEPT?

A.They will take the dramatic step of grounding using the planes.

B.They will investigate the cause of the catastrophe.

C.They will continue using the planes.

D.They will take actions when it is necessary.

30. What is the author’s attitude towards the planes in this passage?

A. approval

B. objective

C. suspicious

D. subjective

第二节(共5个小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)(原创, 文章来自微博@VOA英文口语: 外企高管经验分享:如何成为一个优秀的演讲者?How to Be a Great Speaker?节选)

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。

Body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spoken language. If you want to be a great speaker, please maximize your body language.

1. Keep a firm posture.

A strong posture is one of the most telling signs of confidence.. Keep your back straight, and your shoulders jutted(突出) outward. 31 However, after enough time doing it, you'll eventually do it without thinking

2. Allow yourself to express emotion through your face.

If you're nervous, your face will freeze up. Words alone only go so far in communication. The best speeches are emotionally hard-hitting. 32 Whether rehearsed or not, matching facial expressions will lend your speech with a great air of authenticity.

3. Claim your personal area.

Whether you're speaking on stage or something more casual, chances are larger if there's a physical space you could be occupying. Even if you're the most attractive speaker, there is going to be a part of your audience that wants to be engaged visually as well. Getting your audience's eyes to follow you as you step across the stage will make your presentation (and topic) feel more dynamic. 33 This creates an effect of urgency.

4. 34

Eye contact is essential if you want to foster a connection with the audience he’s speaking to. This doesn't need to be a constant thing, and you don’t need to make eye contact with each individual in the crowd. Instead, simply scanning your eyes around your audience from side to side can instill a sense of interaction between the speaker and his attendees.

5. Keep your movements controlled.

Above all, you should keep every noticeable movement of your body under control when you are speaking. Many people will fidget(烦躁) and squirm(蠕动)when they’re nervous. 35 Your body language should not be left up to whim(心血来潮) or chance.

A. If you're addressing the audience directly with someone, you should walk towards them on the stage.

B. It's intensified when the same feelings are being mirrored by the speaker.

C. Scan everyone you're speaking to.

D. By using your body as an additional form, you can ride your point on multiple levels.

E. If you're someone who struggles with a low-spirited posture, it may take some time to reprogram yourself.

F. This isn’t the sort of impression you want to get across if you intend on

a successful presentation.

G. It's a look you'll want to have whenever you're speaking publically.

第三节概要写作(满分25分)

阅读下面的短文, 根据其内容写一篇60词左右的概要。(加入个别释义和词汇替换)

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other combustible(可燃的) tobacco products within the next year, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health. E-cigarettes deliver nicotine to the lungs by heating a liquid solution that contains nicotine and other chemicals to produce an aerosol(气雾剂) that the user takes in, a process often called “vaping.”

The study compared tobacco use initiation among 222 students who had used e-cigarettes, but not combustible tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or combustible tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade. The study surveyed students from 10 public high schools selected from diverse demographic characteristics. During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used e-cigarettes started using combustible tobacco products, such as cigarettes, and cigars, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used e-cigarettes. Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade, 25.2 percent of e-cigarette users had used combustible tobacco products, compared to just 9.3 percent of nonusers.

“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent year s, this study confirms that we should continue to vigilantly watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same carcinogenic(致癌的) effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”

The following analysis focused on 2,530 students who reported never using combustible tobacco and underwent follow-up assessments after six and 12 months. “Entertaining e-cigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have

never smoked tobacco. Adolescents who enjoy the experience of breathing in nicotine via e-cigarettes could be more likely to experiment with other nicotine products, including smokeable tobacco,” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study. “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could ultimately keep on the epidemic(流行病) of smoking-related illness."

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy (识字)rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters —from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂)of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top? For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s par tly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible — and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century? A. They were difficult to understand. B. They were popular among the rich. C. They were seen as nearly worthless. D. They were written mostly by women. 22. Dickens is compared with the Mona Lisa in the text to stress________.

2018年浙江省杭州高中高考英语最后一卷 副标题 一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分) A One day your pocket might power your smart phone.Soon you may never have to worry about your smart phone running out of juice.Your clothing will simply power it back up for you. That's the word from scientists at China's Chongqing and Jinan Universities in a study just published in the journal ACS Nano. Researchers have been hard at work during the last few years trying to create wearable energy,or clothes that can charge things. The assumption is simple.People today rely heavily upon devices such as smart phones and tablets. And they're looking for ways to recharge these devices on the go.So if you could design clothing fabric that could make use of solar power -one of the most widely available and inexhaustible renewable energy sources - you'd be able to charge your various devices with ease. Scientists have had some past success creating energy-harvesting fibers. But there was always one problem when they tried to fashion these threads into self-powered smart clothes:The fibers they designed got damaged during the clothing manufacturing process, namely during the weaving and cutting. The Chongqing and Jinan University scientists say they've solved this problem because the energy-collecting and energy-storing threads they created are highly flexible - each individual thread is easily bendable, and not simply the fabric as a whole. The team's sample textile can be fully charged to 1.2 volts in 17 seconds by exposure to sunlight - enough voltage that your future smart T or smart dress might be able to power small electronics. It's durable, too;their research showed there was no descent in the fabric after 60 days. But don't worry that this means the fabric is similar to rough cloth. The scientists note their textile can be fashioned into numerous different patterns, and tailored into any designed shape, without affecting performance. 1.What does the underlined phrase "running out of juice" in paragraph 1mean?______ A. Being lacking in energy. B. Wanting to have some juice. C. Being picked out of a drink. D. Having some water running out. 2.Why could smart dress charge a phone?______ A. A solar cell is attached to the dress. B. The fabric of the textile contains current. C. The fabric of the textile is easily bendable. D. The fabric of the textile could collect and store the solar energy. 3.What is the scientists' attitude towards the scientific technology?______ A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful. 【答案】 【小题1】A 【小题2】D 【小题3】A 第1页,共13页

An express train was due to go past about thirty minutes later. If it were not stopped, that long train, full of passengers, would fall into the stream. “Someone must go to the station and warn the station-master,” Kate thought. But who was to go? She would have to go herself. There was no one else. In wind and rain, she started on her difficult was. Soon she was at the bridge that crossed the Des Moines River, a bridge also built of wood, just like the bridge across Honey Creek. The storm had not washed this away, but there was no footpath across it. She would have to cross it by stepping from sleeper(枕木) to sleeper. With great care she began the dangerous crossing, sometimes on her hands and knees, hardly daring to look down between the sleepers into the wild flood waters below. If she should slip, she would fall between the sleepers, into the rapidly flowing stream. At last -she never knew how long it had taken her – she felt solid ground under her feet. But there was no time to rest. She still had to run more than half a mile and had only a few minutes left. Unless she reached the station before the express did, many, many lives would be lost. She did reach the station just as the train came into sight. Fortunately, the station-master was standing outside. “The bridge is down! Stop the train! Oh, please stop it!” Kate shouted breathlessly. The station-master went pale. He rushed into the station building and came back with a signal light. He waved the red light as the train came into the station. It was not a second too early. 21. What did Kate decide to do? A. Stop the express train. B. Check the signal light. C. Meet the passengers. D. Visit the station-master. 22. Which of the following words best describes Kate’s journey? He became over-excited. B The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen is offering a free meal to man guest who is able to produce electricity for the hotel on an exercise bile linked to a generator(发电机). There might be people who will cycle just to get a free meal, but gen erally I don’t think people will take advantage of our programme.” Copenhagen has a long-standing cycling tradition an 36% of locals cycle to work each day, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to the website visitcopenhagen.dk. US environmental website https://www.360docs.net/doc/c29387451.html, recently voted Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. “Because Copenhagen is strongly connected with cycling, we felt the bicycle would work well as symbol of the hotel’s green profile(形象).” If successful, the electric bicycle meal programme will be spread to all Crowne Plaza hotels in the UK, the hotel said in a statement. 24. 浙江省杭州市2019届高三高考模拟卷二英语试卷SYS201907080741 一、阅读理解 详细信息 1. 难度:中等 Seventy-three-year-old George McNeilon selected his food in Value Mart very carefully. After leaving the cashier, he estimated (估计) that he had saved 80 cents and thought that he had got good value for his money again. At the exit, the chilly wind reminded him of his gloves. “Now where are they?” He searched here and there, but nowhere could he find them. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. The worried man made a second search in all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. He was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store. George bought the gloves at a 25% discount, for just $30, ten years ago. They were genuine lambskin (小羊皮), soft, warm and durable. Until then, he had worn cheaper man-made material that lasted no more than three years. His impulsive decision to buy the expensive gloves turned out to be a good one, which even promoted his social status on the bus, as passengers stared at him enviously for six months out of the year. He enjoyed being envied. Bad luck, George thought, to lose his expensive gloves on New Year’s Eve. He reentered the store and followed the same route he had walked before. But several minutes of anxious search turned out to be in vain. “Society has changed. People have changed …” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if people picked up something lost, they would give it back.” Back home, George was at a loss. In deep winter, he could not do anything without a pair of gloves. If he bought cheap ones, he would have to replace them very soon. If he bought new leather ones, they would cost forty dollars. After the holiday, poor George decided to buy another pair of leather gloves. Before boarding the subway, he stepped into Value Mart again to see if by any chance his gloves had been returned to the lost and found office. “What color are they?” the woman in the office asked. “Black,” he answered. She looked into her drawer and drew out a pair of men’s leather gloves. “Are they?” “Yes! Those are mine!” 1.Which of the following is the most probable reason for George’s shopping? A. To kill time in Value Mart as usual.
