摘要

这篇论文的主要目的是研究关于《荷塘月色》两个经典英译本的异同对比,

分别是朱纯深先生及王淑升先生的佳作。我们可以从修辞手法、叠词等不同角度进行对比。通过这些方面去分析,此论文旨在通过指出一些细节来谈论两位词汇使用的优劣与翻译技巧的运用。并且,简述王淑升翻译版本的忠实原文却略显机械化,而朱纯深翻译版本翻译灵活却不甚忠于原文的这一观点。

Abstract

The overall objective of this paper is to study the two classical English versions of Moonlight over the Lotus Pond,which comes from Wang Shusheng and Zhu Chunshen,we should compare them from different angles,such as the translation of rhetorical devices,reduplicated words,ancient poems,etc.By analyzing these aspects, this paper aims to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the usage of words through some details will be pointed out,as well as the translation techniques applied in each work.And state briefly what Wang did well in being loyal to the original,but with stiffness.While Zhu translated flexible but not truly obey the original.

Chapter1.Background introduction of

Moonlight Over the Lotus Pond

Moonlight over the Lotus Pond was written by Zhu Ziqing in the Tsinghua University Park in July1927,soon after the counterrevolutionary coup on12th April.

A series of political upheaval found Zhu Ziqing’s depressed and anxious to harsh reality.As a member of patriotic intellectuals,Zhu Ziqing’s heart full of lament and resent.The helplessness to the campaigns’failure and detest against the dark government------Kuomingtang.All those pressures are suppressed him,thus he wrote down this prose to express his dissatisfaction with reality and yearning for freedom.

The two translation versions are well organized in structure and words.They vividly describe the unique scenery of lotus pond and maintain the musicality of the essay.Both these two translators grasped the emotional tone well though they choose different words to deliver it.

Chapter2:Comparison of Two English

Translation Versions

I.Contrast on the beginning and ending parts

In my paper,“the beginning and ending parts”means the first third paragraph and the last third paragraph.In the beginning of the prose,Zhu Ziqing put his finger on his strong feeling of great anxiety and confusion.Zhu Chunshen translated it with“upset”which means“an unhappy and worried mental state”.While Wang used“restless”that means“worried and uneasy,ceaselessly in motion”.In my opinion,“restless”is more expressive for the author’s complex emotion toward the cruel reality.Zhu Ziqing portrayed in a neuter way to express depressed mood.And Wang’s translation rightly reflects the writer’s mixed feeling,which is better.Here is another example,the fore part of the third sentence in the paragraph one,Wang made it“Slowly the moon

climbed in the sky,and beyond the wall,the laughter of children playing on the road could no longer be heard.”And Zhu made it“A full moon was rising high in the sky, and the laughter of children playing outside had died away.”From the loyalty to the original perspective,Wang’s translation is more apt.Zhu translate“moon”with“full moon”seems to be a little simple and directly and broke writer’s feeling away from his bottom of heart,yet Wang’s translation is more vividly.

What’s more,I want to show a third example.It is the third sentence in the paragraph three that is too short to translate it smoothly.Wang transform it with“I love noise,but I also love quiet;I love crowds,but I also love seclusion.”The structure of Wang’s translation work was consonant with the original,as well as the meaning Wang presented is quite clearly and easy-understanding at the same time.Zhu translate it with “I like a serene and peaceful life,as much as a busy and active one;I like being in solitude,as much as in company.”It’s such a lengthy sentence and not very clearly.

However,in the ending part,Zhu Ziqing quoted two pieces of ancient poems written by Yuan Emperor of the Liang Dynasty.These two poems bring some troubles and difficulties to translators.From the form of ode or ballad,Wang’s translation has its beauty in structure that Zhu’s translation can compare with Wang’s translation also did very well in understanding of the poems quoted and interpreting them better.On the contrary,Zhu choose an ordinary order to translate the poems and depict it like a story. It broke the beauty of from to ode or ballad through didn’t influence on us understand of it.In a certain sense,the loss of literary charm of ancient poems definitely exists in Zhu’s translation.

II.Contrast on rhetorical devices’translation

When it comes to Moonlight over the Lotus Pond,we don’t have to think about Zhu Ziqing’s skillfully usage of analogy personification.Many of sentence of Zhu Chunshen’s translation are parallel structure,and make good use of alliteration and consonance,such as“here and there”,“tiny thrill”,“leaves and lilies”,“liquid light”,“sketchy silhouette”,etc.What’s more,Zhu Chunshen takes good advantage of parallel structure.For instance,Zhu Ziqing used lots of analogy and personification in it in paragraph four by describing lotus.Zhu paid more attention to choosing appropriate words and considerate rules of rhyming,just as it says“Here and there,layers of leaves are dotted with white lotus blossoms,some in demure bloom,others in the sky bud,like scattering pearls,or twinkling stars,or beauties just out of the bath”,which is much more vividly and graphic than the other.The translator should analyze and comprehend

the rhetorical function of source language to translate into English on the basis of the theory of functional translation.Zhu applied it better than Wang.Moreover,the words “a profound sleep”work in concert with“a snatched doze”https://www.360docs.net/doc/c56583917.html,ing these simple words and constitutes a balanced parallel structure.

III.Methods to translate reduplicated words

As a special lexical phenomenon,reduplicated words represent the beauty of the languages in rhythm,image and expression.In translating Chinese literary works,one of the most difficult problems is how to well translate the reduplicated words.The reduplicated words in them are diversified in forms and can express the thoughts and feelings perfectly.The technique I applied is referred as comparison,quotation and https://www.360docs.net/doc/c56583917.html,bining these three methods to elaborate on what information I acquired from the contrastive study.The results of the experiment indicate that translators should take as much method measures to make the translation which is faithful to the original version and with emphasis on the rhymes.

The original contains large numbers of reduplicated words,enriching the beauty of image,music and conception.We can’t express the rich connotation by us words or phrases directly during English translation,but we may take measure to embody these beauties in other ways.For example:

“曲曲折折”的荷塘上面,弥望的是“田田”的叶子。叶子出水很高,像“亭亭”的舞女的裙。

Zhu:All over this winding stretch of water,what meets the eye is a silken field of leaves,reaching rather high above the surface.

Wang:On the surface of the winding and twisting lotus pound floated an immense field of leaves.

They both use“winding”to translate“曲曲折折”.Then,“田田”is a unique adjective here,reflecting not only the lush lotus’leaves but also the artistic beauty.

荷塘的四面,远远近近,高高低低都是树,而杨柳最多。

Zhu:Around the pond,far and near,high and low,are trees.Most of them are willows.

Wang:On all sides of lotus pond,far and near,on high ground and low,there are trees,most of them willow.

Apparently,these simple phrases,which both they make use of,convey the original meaning exactly and at the same time are melodious.But Zhu uses two sentences and Wang structures it into a length sentence which contains several short

sentences.

Chapter3:Conclusion

Broadly speaking,these two versions have their disadvantages and virtue.After comparing with these two versions,I am acutely aware of the importance of translating something before I really know the meaning,combining what I learned into my translation and make it flexible with the loyalty to the original.We must emphasize the aesthetic flavor of prose to keep the spirit of original when we are translating.
