高中英语 Unit4 Public transport Welcome to the Uni

Unit4 Public transport Welcome to theUnitand word power教学设计单元:Unit 4 Public transport板块:Welcome to the unit and word powerThoughts on the design:鉴于本单元的Welcome to the unit 和word power都涉及到各种公共交通工具以及不同交通方式之间的特点,内容有重复之处,所以对两部分进行整合调整,放在一个课时进行教学。

高中英语 Unit 4 Public transport教案 牛津译林版选修7

Unit 4 Public transport【美文阅读】Who invented the traffic signal?1868年12月10日,由英国机械师德·哈特设计的一盏红、绿两色的煤气交通信号灯是城市街道的第一盏信号灯。
它的出现使城市交通大为改善,也为后来交通信号灯的完善奠定了基础。
Traffic lights had been in use even before cars were invented. In those days, people used horses, wagons(四轮马车)and other means of transport. But the traffic was still horrible. So in 1868 in London, England, traffic policemen came up with a basic device: A lantern with two lights-red and green.Green stood for “caution”and red for“stop”.A policeman would turn the lights regularly with a lever (控制杆). Unfortunately this early traffic light proved unsafe. One model exploded a year later and hurt the operator.Things made a turn for the worse when cars were invented. Some people were using new cars, and others were still riding horses, wagons or bicycles. They all shared the same roads and streets with pedestrians(行人). A lot of accidents took place as a result.A traffic police officer named William L. Potts.from Detroit, Michigan knew something had to be done.He designed a traffic signal device that could serve four-way streets. He used three colors—red, yellow and green. He put the signals together with electric controls and wires. In 1920, he had it installed on the Michigan Avenue-Woodward corner street. There were the first automatic traffic signals. Detroit police went on to add fourteen more of these in twelve months.【诱思导学】1.What did the two colors—green and red stand for in the lantern device came up with the London traffic police?________________________________________________________________________2.Why did a lot of accidents take place when cars were invented at the very beginning?________________________________________________________________________3.When was the signal device designed by William L.Potts first put into practice?________________________________________________________________________【答案】 1.Green stood for“caution”and red for“stop”.2.Because the people who were using new cars, riding horses, wagons or bicycles shared the same roads and streets with pedestrians(行人). 3.In 1920.Period ⅠPreviewing(教师用书独具)●教学目标本课时主要是通过学生对学案所给出的内容的学习,了解本课文中所出现的词汇,初步了解课文以及相关的背景知识,对下一堂课就课文的全面理解起到一个铺垫作用。

Electronics, such as laptops, mislead ourminds into thinking that it is still daytime, preventingsleep and increasing the risk of insomnia.Sleep experts say human's natural body clock begins to rest and relax from theday between 9 and 10 pm but the use of computers confuses it.A person's brain biologically becomes awake when the sun is out because brightlight after dark causes the brain to stop producing the hormone (荷尔蒙) calledmelatonin that makes us sleepy.Researchers say blue light from devices such as iPads, which is expected tobecome a popular reading tool when it comes out later this month, is particularlydisruptive (干扰的)during the night when the brain thinks it should be dark.Experts say a good book is a far better way of resting the brain and ensuringa good night's sleep because the bedside lamp light doesn't affect the brain as itdoes not look straight into a person's eyes.“Potentially, yes, if you're using an iPad or a laptop close to bedtime ... that light can be stimulating (刺激) to the brain to make it more awake and delay your ability to sleep,” Phyllis Zee, a professor at Northwestern University and director of the school's Centre for Sleep & Circadian Biology, told CNN.“And I think more importantly, it could also be enough to affect your circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm. 课后训练 阅读理解 Traffic jam and cities, it seems, go hand in hand. Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportation planners, and public officials responsible for transpor- tation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve traffic jam. But is traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that traffic jam is an unpreventable by-product of successful cities, and view the “traffic problem” in a different light. Cities exist because they promote social inter- actions and economic transactions. Traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited space. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying cities don’t have so many traffic problems. New York and Los Angeles are America’s most crowded cities. But if you want access to major brokerage houses(经纪行), you will find them easier to reach in crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your firm needs access to post-production film editors or satellite-guidance engineers, you will reach them more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere. Despite traffic jam, a larger number and wider variety of social interactions and economic transactions can be made perfect in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this light, traffic jam is an unfortunate consequence of prosperity, not a cause of economic decline and urban decay. So while we can consider traffic jam as increasing costs on the areas of big cities, the costs of inaccessibility in uncrowded places are almost certainly greater. There is no doubt that traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That’s why, for now, we don’t see people and capital streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like California, and Illinois. 1. We can conclude from the first paragraph that _____. A. traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of the big city
