博物馆文物名称英译探析作者:曹心语王显志来源:《中文信息》2020年第10期摘;要:博物馆文物的翻译能够帮助外国游客便捷地获取信息、深入了解中国文化,是我国推进跨文化交际的重要途径。
文物翻译规范化、标准化能够促进我国优秀传统文化的对外交流与推广。
本文以南京博物院中各展馆陈列的文物为例,以馆内现场拍摄的照片及网站查询的文物资料为依据,将双语语料按照不同的翻译失误问题进行分析并提出修改建议。
关键词:文物翻译;翻译失误;南京博物院中图分类号:H315.9;文献标识码:A;文章编号:1003-9082(2020)10-0-01一、文物名称翻译原则南京博物院是中国三大博物馆之一,是一座巨大的中华民族文化艺术宝库,藏品备受国内外学术界瞩目。
但由于很多具有深厚文化内涵的文物的专业术语没有录入到英汉、汉英词典中,给翻译工作者带来一定的困难,展馆中的译文也存在一系列问题。
文物的命名蕴含着不同国家、民族的文化内涵,要使每一件文物的汉英名称都完全对应是不可能的。
若英语里查询不到对应的专有名词或通俗的用法,可根据文物特征确切地将其形状、用途等文化信息翻译出来。
刘庆元认为,在处理文物翻译这种特殊文体时,如果“信”与“达”矛盾,译者遵守“达”为先的原则才能达到最佳的译文效果。
二、实例分析1.音译的合理使用音译在文物翻译中十分常见,如展馆中“雨花石”译为Yuhua Stone。
很多文物名称由生僻汉字组成,具有深厚文化内涵。
虽然西方社会也存在过一些外形、用途类似的文物,但用相似文物的英文名称直接对应翻译很难表现出中国的文化内涵,这种情况下多采用音译的方法,如青铜軎辖译为Bronze Wei and Xia。
但音译并不是随意使用的,具有固定、合理英语译法的文物应遵照原有译法翻译,无明确译法且难以译出其文化内涵的时候才可以选择音译,还可酌情添加描述性解释。
音译后看不懂是什么的,则应改用意译。
例如,“石镐”译为Stone Gao显然是不合理的,因為已经存在Stone Pickaxe这个固定且常见的译法。
