He started to scream and kept screaming until he had no voice. As hours passed and Antonio failed to surface. His other friends rushed for help.Shortly the local divers came to rescue, but in vain. Too risky.Asked for help. Peter, a chief frogman, began to plan the next morning’s operations, knowing hurried preparation was deadly. He had narrow escapes from death. Each time, though, training and a cool head saved him. Suddenly, a thought struck him. “Who said he died? That guy may be alive!” The next morning, Peter was suited up. Before a dive, he prayed.Antonio “dreamed” he was drowning. He forced himself awake but couldn’t feel his body. He was too tired to feel scared. Entering the cave, Peter found Antonio. On touching him, a hand closed around his left wrist. Peter knew the young man must be kept from panicking. Gently he passed his mouthpiece to Antonio. He heard Antonio take a couple of breaths before handing the mouthpiece back. Antonio was trying to share oxygen with him. Peter realized. How unbelievable was that, after 17 hours in this hole, his mind still stayed cool!Antonio was treated in the nearest hospital. Doctors said he wouldn’t have survived more than another hour in the cave. When Peter finally climbed back into his car, he doubled up, sobbing. He felt he took part in a miracle. Antonio’s friend’s deathCIt appears to fit with most people’s experience: how Christmas seems to come around quicker every year: Questionnaires by psychologists have shown almost everyone feels time is passing faster now compared to when they were half or a quarter as old. Most strikingly, lots of experiments have shown that, when older people are asked to guess how long the time is, or to ‘reproduce’ the length of periods of time, they guess a shorter amount than younger people. In 1877, Paul Janet suggested the proportional theory, where a child of 10 feels a year as 1/10 of his whole life while a man of 50 as 1/50, so the subjective sense of the 50-year-old man is that theseare insignificant periods of time which gallop. There are also biological theories. The speeding up of time is linked to how our metabolism(新陈代谢) gradually slows down as we grow older. Children’s hearts beat faster than adults’. They breathe more quickly. With their blood flowing more quickly, their body clocks “cover” more time within the space of 24 hours than ours do as adults. On the other hand, older people are like clocks that run slower than normal, so that they lag behind, and cover less than 24 hours. In the 1930s, the psychologist Hudson Hoagland found body temperature causes different perceptions of time. Once, when he looked after his ill wife, he noticed she complained he’d been away for a long time even if only away for a few moments. Therefore, Hoagland tested her perception of time at different temperatures, finding the higher her temperature, the more time seemed to slow down for her, and that raising a person’s body temperature can slow down his sense of time passing by up to 20%.Time doesn’t necessarily have to speed up as we get older though. It depends on how we live our lives, and how we relate to our experiences.8. What do the questionnaires and experiments find?A. Time now is shorter than before.B. Aging makes people think slowly.C. The old feel time flies faster than the young.D. The old value time more than before.9. What does the underlined word “gallop” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Fly swiftly.B. Pause briefly.C. Move slowly.D. Pass stably.10. According to Hudson Hoagland who may feel time go more slowly?A. A kid with slower metabolism.B A child with low body temperature.C. A grown-up feeling freezing.D. An adult with a high fever.11. What is the best title for the passage?A. How time flies!B. To live a full life!C. Why time passes at different speeds?D. How to save more time?DRemote work, especially in a world affected by COVID-19, naturally leads to “flex time”. Employees with small children might be getting the majority of their work done at night after the kids are in bed. Working early, you quit early. Starting late, work late. With your teammates working during different hours, you may be getting messages at all hours of the day, night, or weekend, making you always available. That might be necessary in some industries during these challenging times, but certainly not in every industry and not for everyone in any industry. Once this takes root in your company culture, it becomes difficult to “reset” later. Besides, “always-on” isn’t sustainable(可持续的), which increases pressure and quickly turns your company into anunpleasant place to work.If your company adapts “flex time”, how can you accommodate your employees’ needs while still protecting your culture and your teams work-life balance? The key is to encourage flex time while also setting clear “communication hours” (for example, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Outside of those hours, employees should be encouraged to change their settings to “Do Not Disturb” and to use the “schedule send” feature of their email client so that messages only get delivered during communication hours. If messages must happen outside of the set communication hours, such as for urgent or time-sensitive issues. make employees phone or text only. This way people can comfortably close down all other communication channels like email, WeChat, WeCom, etc. The act of having to call or text someone is usually enough to give the sender a pause to think, “Do I really need this person now, or can the communication wait?” This allows everyone on your team to work whenever is appropriate for them, but not feel like they have to work all the time to accommodate everyone else’s schedule. A word of “Thanks for being so responsive” to someone answering an email outside of the defined communication hours definitely brings empathy (同理心), which smooths the urgency while also cultivating the trust and culture.12. What may result in the phenomenon of “always-on”?A. COVID-19.B. Some industries.C. Increasing pressure.D. Flexible working time.13. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?A. The phenomenon of flex timeB. The disadvantages of “flex time”C. The necessity of “flex time”D. The company culture of “flex time”14. What can we know about “communication hours”?A. It helps to make up for the shortcomings of “flex time”.B. It should be set from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.C. Employees mustn’t be disturbed within the hours.D. Employees are still responsive outside of the hours.15. What is the author ‘s attitude to the combination of “flex time” and “communication hour”?A. Neutral.B. Supportive.C. Opposed.D. Indifferent.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项Keeping curious kids from disrupting wildlifeInteracting with the wild, naturally curious kids tend to collect seashells at the beach or keep small wildlife as pets. 16.__________ So how to help kids protect the wild while enjoying spending time outsides? They’re part of wildlife’s habitat and play an important role. 17.___________ Let kids explore with amagnifying glass (放大镜) instead of their curious fingers. Let whatever they find outside stay outside.18.________________ It seems a fun idea to throw pieces of bread to ducks. Animals have unique dietary needs that are different from humans. Eating human food can make them sick or become dependent on human food. Bears are an example of animals that often have to be killed after developing a taste for human food.Admire animal afar, not disrupt nearby. The urge to take a photo with a squirrel, bird or slow-moving turtle can be strong for kids. 19._______________ Instead, remind kids to stay away and show them how to use a camera’s zoom button, or just admire with their eyes.Take well-worn paths, not off-road romps (嬉闹). Kicking piles of leaves, stepping on bushes, and walking through forested areas can unintentionally scare wildlife. If surprised animals defend their homes, everyone could get hurt. Nobody likes having a guest come in and destroy their home and act rudely. 20.___________A. Keep snacks away from animals.B. Share food if animals are hungry.C. Exposure to them develops kids’ love and curiosity.D. The same rule applies to visiting wildlife in their hor.E. Animals rely on plants for hiding: rocks and shells for home.F. Twenty﹣one years ago, my husband gave me Sam, an eight﹣week﹣old schnauzer (雪纳瑞犬), to help ease the loss of our daughter. Sam and I developed a very special bond over the next years. At one point, my husband and I decided to move to a new home in New Jersey. Ourneighbor, whose cat had recently had kittens, asked if we would like one. We were a little ________ about Sam's jealousy and how he would handle his turf(地盘)being invaded, but we decided to risk it.We picked a little, gray, playful ball of Fur. She raced around chasing imaginary mice and squirrels and jumped from table to chair in the blink of an eye, so we named her Lightning. At first, Sam and Lightning were very cautious with each other and kept their distance. But slowly, Lightning started following Sam ﹣ up the stairs, down thestairs, into the kitchen. Later, when they slept, it was always together; when they ate, it was always next to each other. When I took either one out, the other was always waiting by the door when we returned. That was the way it was for years. Then, without any warning, Sam was diagnosed as having a weak heart. I had no other choice but to have him put down. The pain was nothing compared with what I experienced when I had to walk into our house alone. This time, there was no Sam for Lightning to greet and no way to explain why she would never see her friend again. In the following days, Lightning seemed heart﹣broken. I could see the disappointment in her eyes whenever anyone opened the front door, or the hope whenever she heard a dog bark. One day as I walked into our living room, I happened to see Lightning was lying next to the sculptured replica(复制品)of Sam that we had bought a few years ago, one arm wrapped around the statue's neck, contentedly sleeping with her best friend.(1)What does the underlined word "apprehensive" in paragraph 2 mean?________A Shocked.B Curious.C Worried.D Eager..(2)How did Sam get along with Lightning at first?________A Lightning followed Sam everywhere it went.B They fought with each other fiercely.C They kept a certain distance from each other.D Sam was unfriendly to Lightning..(3)What can we infer from the text?________A Lightning knew Sam had died.B Sam means a lot to Lightning.C We took Lightning home to accompany Sam.D Sam came back to stay with Lightning again..(4)What can be the best title of the text?________A The Friendship between Sam and LightningB The Coming of Sam andLightning C The Death of Sam to Lightning D The Importance of Sam to Us.3. Poetry is the artistic expression of the human thoughts and feelings in rhythmical and emotional language. Compared with prose (散文) , it lays more stress onrhythm, imagery (意象), emotion, and imagination. As its language is rhythmical, its sound is highly musical. We may say, "No rhythm, no poetry", no matter the rhythm of poetry is traditional as in metrical (格律的) style or "natural" as in free verse. So the poet must write carefully and reflectively in order to find words that not only fulfills the demands of meter and rhyme, but also expresses the meaning in a manner that complements the imagery and tone of the rest of the poem. This careful use of language isthe most significant difference between ordinary prose and poetry. The ordinary prose writer neatly builds an argument using words the way a mason (石匠)builds a house using bricks; the poet is an artisan who creates a fieldstone hearth (大卵石壁炉炉床)﹣ each stone or each word is turned over, examined, and often laid aside until it can be placed where its shape, weight, and color will contribute to the strength and beautyof the whole. Prose, according to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is "words in their best order", and poetry is "the best words in their best order".The reader's chief delight in reading poetry comes from his response to its musical effect, which comes from many metrical patterns represented in conventional iambic (抑扬格) feet or from repetitions and parallel phrasing shown in free verse and from other elements of poetry.(1)What's the purpose of saying "No rhythm, no poetry" in paragraph 1?________A To show the importance of rhythm in poetry.B To show rhythm is the most important element.C To show there is no limit on the use of rhythm.D To show rhythm is more important than poetry..(2)What is the most important difference between ordinary prose and poetry?________A The degree of emotion.B The careful choice of words.C The delicate use of the metric style.D The demands of meter and rhyme..(3)Where is the reader's main joy in reading poetry?________A The experience of the poet's emotion.B The appreciation of the metrical pattern.C The reader's reaction to the musical effect.D The comprehension ofthe thoughts and feelings..(4)How is the text mainly developed?________A By definition.B By examples.C By quotation.D By comparison.4. One day as I walked into our living room, I happened to see Lightning was lying next to the sculptured replica(复制品)of Sam that we had bought a few years ago, one arm wrapped around the statue’s neck, contentedly sleeping with her best friend.
Then, without any warning, Sam was diagnosed as having a weak heart. I had no other choice but to have him put down. Recently he created truly revolutionary-clip-on running shoes for horses. While the iron horseshoe is known for its durability and adjustability it also has some serious flaws-it’s heavy, restricts movement, has no shock absorption, channels heat and cold to the inner hoof, and the need for nailing can destroy the hoof horn. But finding hoof boots that don’t rub on a horse, leg and hoof, are easy to put on and remove, and stay on all kinds of terrain(地形), can be a real struggle. Animals combine charming images as fine art prints in various sizes. As an artist whose style she calls“household surrealism(超现实主义)”,she works in various media and has a large collection of works.Instead of throwing an old pair of pants or T-shirt away,Helga Stentzel puts her tired garments out to the farm.By hanging them on a simple clothesline she sets up and folding them artfully that look like animals, she takes wonderful pictures. Some are shot in real locations while others are digitally placed in environments in charming form with appealing colors.Siberian-born Stentzel has cooperated with many respectable and well-known brands, one of which is Hogar Verde,a bio-friendly laundry products brand in Ecuador. For them she has created the adorable clothing illusicons (错觉)for a print ad campaign, which also drew attention to the endangered animals shown within, like dinosaurs, polar bears and so on.Stentzel's practice started from her childhood in Siberia, where she spent hours surveying her grandmother's carpet, woods and random objects for recognizable forms, including a pile of buckets looking like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.In what seems a very simple gesture,Stentzel's works employ household items and turn them into surrealist images that uncover different reading layers. From food to clothes, the artist is inspired by everyday olojects and gives them a second life through her creative and really poetic personal angle.“I stare at things longer than socially acceptable! It can be anything—a chair,a noodle hanging off the fork,a lamp post in the middle of the road.Observation is a form of thinking for me.I really enjoy studying colors, shapes and textures—with no expectation, simply admiring their unique beauty.Very often there's nothing more to it,but sometimes BOOM!—a creative idea hits my brain, and it makes a link between sliced bread and wrinkled skin of a French bulldog. It's very unpredictable,”Stentzel said.24.How did Stentzel create an artwork according to paragrapl2?A.By designing clothes on software.B.By painting animals in various colors.C.By taking photos of animals on the farm.D.By hanging clothes folded in animal shapes.25.What is Stentzel's source of inspiration?A.Daily items.B.Tourist attractions.C.Random surveys.D.Childhood adventures.26.Which of the following can best describe Stentzel's fine art prints?plex and digital.B.Meaningful and creative.C.Poetic but commercial.D.Ordinary but bio-friendly.27.What can we learn from Stentzel's story?A.Art can give people a second life.B.Artworks are from life yet above life.C.Creation is from intentional observation.D.Cooperation results in adorable artworks.CCould the next Ernest Hemingway or Jane Austen be a well-engineered Al software program? It's a question becoming increasingly pressing as machine language-learning software continues to evolve.Much of this is just nerves.Today's Al creative writing programs are not yet at a stage of development where they pose a serious threat to Colleen Hoover or Charles Dickens. But while attention continues to for us on the possibility of a blanket takeover of human literature by Al,far less consideration has been given to the prospect of Al co-working with humans.Earlier this month,American sci-fi writer Ken Liu,who had been awarded Hugo and Nebula to his name, joined12other professional authors for a writing workshop on Google's Word craft. This Al tool,a language generating model,is not yet publicly available but is advertised as an AI-powerel writing assistant that can, when given the right instruction from the writer, provide helpful descriptions, create lists of objects or emotional states, and even brainstorm ideas. The writers at the workshop, however, emerged with mixed reports.“Word craft is too sensible.Wow!”Robin Sloan wrote.“But‘sensible’is another word for predictable, overused and boring. My intention here is to produce something unexpected.”I'm unconvinced that writers awarded the Nobel Prize have much to fear from Al.Their work, and that of countless other rnove lists, short story writers, dramatists and poets,is too particular, too beautifully unique.Even if a model learned what they had done in the past,it would not be able to predict where their creativity might take them in the future. But for authors who write following a pattern,Al might step in,first as assistants before some day to authorship.Production-line novels are nothing new.In the1970s,Barbara Cartland, who wrote more than723books in her lifetime, many of which are romance bestsellers, would read her novels for her secretary to type up at the remarkable rate of roughly seven chapters a week. But already machine has replaced the secretary's role.Perhaps creative writing software isn't that far from replacing the Mrs.Cartlands of today.28.Which aspect of Al calls for more attention?A.Its damage to our nerves.B.Its progress in literary studies.C.Its cooperation with humans.D.Its influence on human literature.29.What can we learn about Word craft from the text?A.It generates novels automatically.B.It outperforms professional writers.C.Its works receive praises from the public.D.Its works bear similarity to existing ones.30.What can writers do to avoid the threat from Al?A.Increase writing speed.e diverse resources.C.Produce creative works.D.Follow the latest patterns.31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Will AI Replace Human Writers?B.AI Warns Mrs.Cartlands of TodayC.Is Writing Running into a New Era?D.Word craft Lies at the Center of DebateDTwo separate research groups in the U.K.and Denmark have come up with the same idea for a study that could help save endangered species, and have gotten the same results. It involves sucking environmental DNA from the air that animals leave behind.“We use a really small pump that pulls the air through, and we hope the DNA gets caught on the filter(过滤器),"said Elizabeth Clare, the lead researcher.“It's a bit like making coffee. You make coffee by sucking waterthrough a filter and leaving the coffee grounds behind. That's basically what we're doing;we're just sucking the air through and hoping that the DNA gets lost behind."Clare says the concept has been used for years in different ways.Scientists sample pathogens(病原体)from the air, which has been used to help track COVID-19.Environmental DNA can also be collect d from water to help ease invasive species.A big goal for both research teams with the new study is to be able to locate endangered species and help save them.It is important to note that this type of DNA sampling can only be picked up if a species is in the area, so if there were two of the same animal, scientists would not be able to tell which one the DNA came from. Both research groups also reported certain DNA samples not showing up when they knew an animal had been in the area. They also can't tell yet how long an animal's DNA will stick around after it's been in one area. Sam and I developed a very special bond over the next years. At one point, my husband and I decided to move to a new home in New Jersey. Our neighbor,Sam’s jealousy and how he would handle his turf(地盘)being invaded, but we decided to risk it.We picked a little, gray, playful ball of Fur. She raced around chasing imaginary mice and squirrels and jumped from table to chair in the blink of an eye, so we named her Lightning. At first, Sam and Lightning were very cautious with each other and kept their distance. But slowly, Lightning started following Sam — up the stairs, down the stairs, into the kitchen. In the following days, Lightning seemed heart-broken. I could see the disappointment in her eyes whenever anyone opened the front door, or the hope whenever she heard a dog bark. One day as I walked into our living room, I happened to see Lightning was lying next to the sculptured replica(复制品)of Sam that we had bought a few years ago, one arm wrapped around the statue’s neck, contentedly sleeping with her best friend.24. What can be the best title of the text?A. The Friendship between Sam and LightningB. The Coming of Sam and LightningC. The Death of Sam to LightningD. The Importance of Sam to UsCPoetry is the artistic expression of the human thoughts and feelings in rhythmical and emotional language. Compared with prose (散文) , it lays more stress on rhythm, imagery (意象), emotion, and imagination. As its language is rhythmical, its sound is highly musical. We may say, “No rhythm, no poetry”, no matter the rhythm of poetry is traditional as in metri cal (格律的) style or “natural” as in free verse. So the poet must write carefully and reflectively in order to find words that not only fulfills the demands of meter and rhyme, but also expresses the meaning in a manner that complements the imagery and tone of the rest of the poem. This careful use of language is the most significant difference between ordinary prose and poetry. The ordinary prose writer neatly builds an argument using words the way a mason (石匠) builds a house using bricks; the poet is an artisan who creates a fieldstone hearth (大卵石壁炉炉床) —each stone or each word is turned over, examined, and often laid aside until it can be placed where its shape, weight, and color will contribute to the strength and beauty of the whole. Prose, according to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is “words in their best order”, and poetry is “the best words in their best order”.The reader’s chief delight in reading poetry comes from his response to its musical effect, which comes from many metrical patterns represented in conventional iambic (抑扬格) feet or from repetitions and parallel phrasing shown in free verse and from other elements of poetry.28. What’s the purpose of saying “No rhythm, no poetry” in paragraph 1?A. To show the importance of rhythm in poetry.B. To show rhythm is the most important element.C. To show there is no limit on the use of rhythm.D. To show rhythm is more important than poetry.29. What is the most important difference between ordinary prose and poetry?A. The degree of emotion.B. The careful choice of words.C. The delicate use of the metric style.D. The demands of meter and rhyme.30. Where is the reader’s main joy in reading poetry?A. The experience of the poet’s emotion.B. The appreciation of the metrical pattern.C. The reader’s reaction to the mu sical effect.D. The comprehension of the thoughts and feelings.31. How is the text mainly developed?A. By definition.B. By examples.C. By quotation.D. By comparison.DA Russian spacecraft traveling to the International Space Station Thursday had to make an emergency landing when a rocket engine failed to fire. It was the latest in a recent series of failures for the Russian space program, which is also used by the U.S. to carry its astronauts to the station.United States astronaut Nick Hague and Russian astronaut Alexei Ovchinin landed safely about 20 kilometers from Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. Russia’s TASS news agency said the capsule carrying the two men separated from the troubled rocket safely. This caused the capsule to drop very sharply into the Earth’s atmosphere. Parachutes(降落伞)helped slow the returning capsule. Search and rescue teams were sent to recover the crew.Russia’s RIA news agency reported that Russia has immediately put off all manned space launches after the failure.
