It has caused serious pollution.B. The amount of it is increasing.C. It can be seen by people on the earth.D. It has influenced the launch of satellites.22.What are human beings doing with space junk?______A. They have invented a net to track and catch junk.B. They are working to find ways to clean up space junk.C. They are worried and feel hopeless to control space junk.D. They are raising money to encourage solutions to space junk.23.According to Jacob Geer, ______ .A. a satellite might crash with the junk and blow up.B. humans are depending on satellites for development.C. too much space junk would affect future generations.D. it's necessary to fund new approaches to tracking satellites.24.What can we infer from the last paragraph?______A. Ideas to collect space junk are only seen in science movies.B. Humans have found ways to create less junk in space.C. It takes time to find a solution to space junk clean.D. The solution of space junk should be put into practice.三、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共12.5分)Some expressions describe people who are important,or at least who think they are.One such expression is,bigwig. In the seventeenth century, important men in Europe began to wear false hair, called wigs.As years passed, wigs began to get bigger. The size of a man's wig depended on how important he was.

AThank you. It’s my great honor to be given this award. You cannot imagine that I have always been a late starter. Years ago, when I was 16, I took an important exam — GCE(General Certificate of Education), which turned out to be a failure. My dad was reading my report card and saw that my position in class was 29th, but the number in class was 29. It meant that I had achieved the distinction of being bottom of my class.I wasn’t lazy, and I was really trying. You can picture how I felt. Dad put his hand on my shoulder and said, “You can only do the best you can, but whatever you decide to do, make sure you love it.” He was a really sweet guy and a great man. I knew his attempt to hide his disappointment with some of his encouraging words. I was depressed for a week, but his advice was a wake-up call.Fortunately I love working with my hands, and I was good at two things: woodwork and art, and I really loved to draw and paint. I was quite talented. Dad strongly encouraged me to go to art school, which in those days wasn’t the obvious place that a father would suggest. So I got into Hartlepool College of Art. The college was a revelation (出乎意料), the passionate teachers there, who were extremely interested in the students, not just tolerating them but actually engaging with them. It was a world apart from my schooling until then. It’s extraordinary what an enthusiastic teacher can do, drawing the student out, lighting independence, and encouraging a design of your own future, rather than waiting for something to happen. I’m honored to have become one of these passionate teachers years later. My teachers inspired me, and thanks to my dad, here I am tonight. I think I should mention all the talents I have worked with over time, and to my kids and my wife Giannina, thank you.Thank you for this great award. I shall find a very special place for it.1. How did the author feel after taking GCE?A. Happy.B. Upset.C. Tired.D. Relieved.2. What didHartlepoolCollege of Art impress the author most?A. The teachers were strict with students.B. The students set good examples for each other.C. The teachers inspired students’ passion for learning.D. The students got prepared for their lessons independently.3. The author gave this speech to ________.A. share his career choiceB. explain his teaching methodsC. describe his life experienceD. show his appreciationBThe first patient who died on my watch was an older man with a faulty heart. We tried to slow it down with treatment, but it suddenly stopped beating completely. Later, whenever I would have a case like that one, I found myself second-guessing my clinical management. However, it turns out that thinking twice may actually cause more harm than good.In a working paper, Emory University researchers found that when doctors delivering a baby have a bad result, they are more likely to switch to a different delivery method with the next patient, often unnecessarily and sometimes with worse results.Because doctors make so many decisions that have serious consequences, thefalloutfrom second-guessing appears especially large for us. A 2006 study found that if a patient had a bleed after being prescribed (开药) warfarin, the physician was about 20% less likely to prescribe later patients the blood thinner that prevents strokes (中风). However, if a patient was not on warfarin and had a stroke physicians were still no more likely to prescribe warfarin to their other patients. These findings highlight interesting behavioral patterns in doctors. In the blood-thinner study, doctors were more affected by the act of doing harm (prescribing a blood thinner that ended up hurting doctors were more affected by the act of doing harm(prescribing a blood thinner that ended up hurting a patient) and less affected by letting harm happen (not prescribing a blood thinner and the patient having a stroke). Yet a stroke is often more permanent and damaging than a bleed. But this phenomenon is not unique to medicine. ''Overreaction to Fearsome Risks'' holds true for broader society. For instance, sensational headlines about shark attacks on humans in Florida in 2001 caused a panic and led the state to prohibit shark-feeding expeditions. Yet shark attacks had actually fallen that year and, according to thestudy, such a change was probably unnecessary given the extremely small risk of such an attack happening.Humans are likely to be influenced by emotional and often irrational (不理性的) thinking when processing information, bad events and mistakes. As much as we don't want to cause an unfortunate event to happen again, we need to be aware that a worst situation that can be imagined doesn't necessarily mean we did anything wrong. When we overthink, we fail to rely on thinking based on what we know or have experienced. Instead, we may involuntarily overanalyze and come to the wrong conclusion.I have treated dozens of patients who presented with the same illnesses as my first patient, who died more than a year ago. Instead of second-guessing myself, I trusted my clinical instinct (本能) and stayed the course. Every one of those patients survived. You should trust your instinct in your life, too.4. The first two paragraphs suggest that________.A. bad medical outcomes affect doctorsB delivering babies can be difficult workC. some doctors are not very experiencedD. doctors sometimes make silly mistakes5. In the blood-thinner study, doctors________.A. tend to prescribe less effective medicineB. are more concerned about the patients' safetyC. become less confident in writing a prescriptionD. believe a stroke is more treatable than a bleeding6. What does the underlined word ''fallout'' in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. ResultB. BenefitC. DifferenceD. Absence7. The author will probably agree that________.A. we should not doubt our own decisionsB. our experience will pave way for our futureC. humans are emotional and irrational on the wholeD. instincts don't necessarily lead to wrong directionsCJerry Lawson had a love of science and invention from a very young age. And, with the support of his family and teachers, he took that love and helped change the world for billions of people, when he invented the modem video game cartridge. Both of Jerry's parents supported his love of science and invention. His father, a longshoreman, was a science fan and encouraged Jerry to always experiment with things. Jerry's first-grade teacher helped encourage him on his path to be someone influential similar to George Washington Carver, a great AfricanAmerican inventor. Support and Encouragement-Necessary for SuccessDWe all know that a healthy lifemeans getting both plenty of exercise and enough good-quality sleep, but reality often gets in the way. The new research indicates that doing enough exercise could make up for some of the unhealthy impacts of bad sleep. While the health benefits of exercise and sleep are nothing new, it's the relationship between them that is interesting in this particular study — it could even give doctors another option to suggest for patients dealing with sleep problems.“We found those who had both the poorest sleep quality and who exercised the least were most at risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and cancer,” says epidemiologist Bo-Huei Huang, from the University of Sydney in Australia.Participants were grouped into three levels of physical activity (high, medium or low) and were also given a sleep quality score from 0-5 based on the amount of shut-eye they got, how late they stayed up, insomnia, snoring and daytime sleepiness. Those with the highest risk of dying from cancer or heart disease during the study period were those with the worst quality sleep and who didn't meet the WHO recommended guidelines for exercise. That risk went down for people with poor quality sleep but who did meet the exercise guidelines. In the case of all forms of cancer, for example, those at the unhealthiest end of the sleep and exercise scale had a 45 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than those with good sleep scores who kept physically active. However, that risk just about disappeared for those who didn't score well on sleep but did score well on physical activity. For now it's not clear why more exercise might make up for poor sleep, as far as our health goes. It could be that the increased activity iscounteractinginflammation (炎症), or reducing irregularities in glucose metabolism, suggest the researchers.“Considering that physical activity is perhaps more modifiable than sleep, our study offers people more health incentives to be physically active.” says population health researcher Emmanuel Stamatakis, from the University of Sydney.12. This research is of particular interest in that ________.A. it’s in this study that exercise is known to be beneficial to sleep.B. this study offers people more health treatments to be physical active.C. it could enable doctors to cure patients of their sleeping condition.D. the relationship between exercise and sleep is updated in this study.13. A man sat at a metro station in Washington D.C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule. The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded(鼓掌), nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100.This is a real story. Joshua Bell’s playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment. One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?1. Thank you for your understanding.”The cafe, which only opened a few days ago, charges customers by time used, and is equipped with USB ports, computer stands, and free Wi-Fi. Struggling writers can also bring their own food and drinks, or have it delivered there since coffee and water are the only things that they can get, but it’s pretty strict when it comes to the actual writing. When entering the cafe, customers must write down at the reception desk(前台)how many words they plan to write and by what time they plan to finish. Every hour, a member of the staff will come by to check on their progress and apply a predetermined pressure level to help move things along. For example, choosing the “S” level will have the cafe staff pushing you to get the work done more often, while the “M” level includes a more mild way. However, the craziest rule of the Manuscript Writing Cafe is that writers are not allowed to end their work until reaching their goal or until the place closes down for the day, whichever comes first. It’s not clear how the cafe carries out this rule, but it is meant to keep customers from announcing high targets th at they won’t be able to meet. While some found it interesting, others said that it was too much pressure.“If it were me, I would no longer be able to leave the store and would end up having to live there,” one person commented.1. What is the purpose of opening the cafe?A.To provide a good atmosphere for writing.B.To earn a lot from writers.C.To open a different cafe and attract people.D.To gather people who love writing.2. What does paragraph 2 and paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.The service offered by the cafe.B.The introduction of the cafe.C.The unique rules in the cafe.D.The charging standard of the cafe.3. What can we infer from the passage?A.Many writers have the problem of finishing writing in time.B.The rules are useful for effective writing.C.Food and drinks are not allowed in the cafe.D.Writers cannot leave the cafe unless they finish writing.4. What is people’s attitude towards the cafe?A.Favorable. B.Supportive.C.Doubtful. D.Varied.4. Elements of Latin have made their way into many Weatern countries. Data varies, but as much as 70% of words in English have a Latin or Greek root.By learning more about these roots and how they combine to create words, you will have an advantage in un derstanding new words, even if you’ve never seen them before. The great thing is that it’s not hard to learn these roots and recognise the patterns. You’re not learning the whole language with its grammar and difficult points. You just need to memorise some parts of the vocabulary that you often see in English. So how do word roots work?Every word has a root. This part contains the key to a word’s meaning. Take the word “happy” for example. This word only contains the root, which means “full of joy”. There’s nothing more to the meaning of the word in this form. Some words, however, have extra parts. We call these affixes, including prefixes, the part attached before the root, and suffixes, the part attached behind the root. Based on the additional meaning of the prefixes and suffixes, the meaning of the final word will be shaped to mean something new. Take the word “autobiography” for example. The root is “bio”, meaning life. You may have noticed that many words with “bio” have something to do with life or l iving beings—biology, biography, and so on. When the suffixes “graph”, meaning to write, is added to it, it means a story about someone’s or something’s life. “Auto” means by oneself. Altogether, an “autobiography” is a story about a person’s life, written by the person himself or herself. In a word, a better grasp of word roots can make you understand the English language better, and will help you with your vocabulary recognition and memory skills.1. What’s needed to undenstand new words with roots?A.A good understanding of Latin or Greek. B.A full understanding of grammar.C.The ability to recognise different parts of words. D.The ability to speak various Western languages.2. What do we know about the root?A.It can’t form a word by itself.B.It is a necessary part of a word.C.It is of greater importance than affixes. D.It has no impact on a word’s meaning. 3. What is the meaning of “biochemistry”?A.The science that is related to living things.B.A person who does rescareh about chemistry.C.A person who does rescarch about living things.D.The study of chemical reactions related to living things.4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?A.Secret of Understanding New Words B.Latin’s Way into Western Languages C.Amazing Power of Affixes D.Hints on Language Exams5. And among all the foods, few are better than potatoes.1 Besides, just about e veryone likes them. Seriously, have you ever met someone who doesn’t enjoy potatoes one way or another? Now, learn how to grow potatoes in a box. 2 Read on and think about all the great food you could make using this easy guide. Before growing potatoes, let’s first build a 4 by 4 wooden box. 3 What’s best about this box is that you can use it, again and again, for different growing seasons. The first step is cutting the 2×2 inches board into pieces of 33 inches in length; four pieces will be enough. Then, take the 2×6 boards and cut them into 12 lengths of 21 inches and 12 lengths of 24 inches. Make some holes in these and attach the bottom row on the 2×2 boards. Place this part over the soil and plant potatoes about 4 inches deep. Wait about five months for the potatoes to grow up.4You see, you don’t need a huge vegetable garden to grow potatoes. 5 Now, start your creative handy work, and you will have a green thumb.6. It makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even clean your windows with it. And now, according to scientists,it may even help the planet’s population survive climate change. Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan proved that. They found growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐)--- the main ponent of vinegar. After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants before they stopped giving them water pletely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive. “In the experiment, we targeted the basic foods of the world—rice, wheat and maize... and proved successful” Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine. Kim has already been in touch with people around the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from farmers to panies and amateur gardeners. “Now we are trying to cooperate with them to make a method to apply this system, and make the process as simple as possible,” he said. Hopefully this means the end of hunger caused by bad weather in the future. 21. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. Vinegar may help creatures survive bad weather. B. Vinegar is found in plants by Japanese scientists. C. Vinegar is very useful for cooking. D. Vinegar is mainly used by people to clean houses. 22. Scientists in Japan find from their studies that ________. A. the acetate can be used by farmers to replace the soil. B. the plants treated with acetate could survive dry conditions. C. soil condition could be changed by pouring vinegar continually. D. the Arabidopsis could survive in dry weather because of the shape. 23. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. How to decrease the cost is the main issue. B. Keeping plants alive means a lot for scientists. C. The method is promising especially in agriculture. D. It’s too difficult for farmers to accept the method. 24. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Plants Need Water B. Vinegar and Food C. Japanese Scientists Find a Way to Survive D. Vinegar Could End Hunger B As more and more schools rush to put digital devices in the hands of every student, many parents are being increasingly worried about the quality of their children’s education. The promise of increased student academic achievement through the use of technology hasn’t produced any significant results in the past 20 years. Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles conducted a study in 2018 to determine if the social skills of elementary students were blocked by screen time. Two groups of sixth grade students were pared. One group was sent to an outdoor camp for one week with no screen time, while the control group live life as normal. After one week, the students at camp had made significant improvements over their peers(同龄人). The good news is that when we limit access to screen time and give children the opportunity to interact face to face, they quickly bee better at reading the emotional state of others. The bad news is that we have a generation of children that struggle with this basic emotional intelligence skill.
