On Friday evening last I received from His Majesty the mission to form a new administration. It was the evident will of Parliament and the nation that this should be conceived on the broadest possible basis and that it should include all parties.I have already pleted the most important part of this task. A war cabinet has been formed of five members, representing, with the Labor, Opposition and Liberals, the unity of the nation. It was necessary that this should be done in onesingle day on account of the extreme urgency and rigor of events. Other key positions were filled yesterday.I am submitting a further list to the King tonight. I hope to plete the appointment of principal Ministers during tomorrow. The appointment of other Ministers usually takes a little longer. I trust when Parliament meets againthis part of my task will be pleted and that the administration will be plete in all respects.I considered it in the public interest to suggest to the Speaker that the House should be summoned today. At the end of today's proceedings, the adjournment of the House will be proposed until May 2l with provisionfor earlier meeting if need be. Business for that will be notified to M. P. 's at the earliest opportunity.I now invite the House by a resolution to record its approval of the steps taken and declare its confidence in the new government. The resolution:"That this House weles the formation of a government representing the united and inflexible resolve of the nation to prosecute the war with Germany to a victorious conclusion."To form an administration of this scale and plexity is a serious undertaking in itself. But we are in the preliminary Phase of one of the greatest battles in history. We are in action at any other points-in Norway and in Holland-and we have to be prepared in the Mediterranean. The air battle is continuing, and many preparations have to be made here at home.In this crisis I think I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today, and I hope that any of my friends and colleagues or for mer colleagues who are affected by the political reconstruction will make all allowances for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act.I say to the House as I said to Ministers who have joined this government, I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word, It is victory. Victory at all costs-victory in spite of all terrors-victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival.Let that be realized. No survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind shall move forward toward his goal.I take up my task in buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men.I feel entitled at this juncture, at this time, to claim the aid of all and to say, "Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength." Friendship is a diamond buried in the earth; a treasure of great worth. But first it must be mined then faceted and shined. It takes pick and shovel and strain, enpassing time and enduring pain, until its grace is seen; a glittering gift of love that's shared between we three: First God, and you, then me.

How would I ever measure up to these people who seemed so confident and sure of what they wanted?

我怎么才能像他们一样看上去信心十足,明确知道自己需要什么呢?I didn‟t have any specific direction. I didn‟t have a clue as to what I wanted to do or be. College was just the next logical step. I felt very much out of place. To me, these people around me embodied my picture of the consummate college student. They stood there laughing with their friends, a cup of coffee in one hand, the schedule of classes in the other, discussing their options for the upcoming term. Me, I had a list of classes on a piece of paper that I had painstakingly worked out with my big brother the night before. If I didn‟t get those particular classes, I was sunk. The idea of having a backup plan never even occurred to me. What would I do? I would just die. I knew that crying wasn‟t an option—I was in college for heaven‟s sake! Maybe throwing up would be a more socially acceptable reaction. I was alone, nervous and feeling like a cartoon in a museum of priceless paintings.

One Girl Changed My LifeMy childhood and adolescence were a joyous outpouring of energy, a ceaseless quest for expression, skill, and experience. School was only a background to the supreme delight of lessons in music, dance, and dramatics, and the thrill of sojourns in the country, theaters, concerts. And books, big Braille books that came with me on streetcars, to the table, and to bed. Then one night at a high school dance, a remark, not intended for my ears, stabbed my youthful bliss: “That girl, what a pity she is blind.” Blind! That ugly word that implied everything dark, blank, rigid, and helpless. Quickly I turned and called out, Please don’t feel sorry for me, I’m having lots of fun. But the fun was not to last. With the advent of college, I was brought to grips with the problem of earning a living. Part-time teaching of piano and harmony and, upon graduation, occasional concerts and lectures, proved only partial sources of livelihood. In terms of time and effort involved, the financial remuneration was disheartening. This induced within me searing self-doubt and dark moods of despondency. Adding to my dismal sense of inadequacy was the repeated experience of seeing my sisters and friends go off to exciting dates. How grateful I was for my piano, where—through Chopin, Brahms, and Beethoven—I could mingle my longing and seething energy with theirs. And where I could dissolve my frustration in the beauty and grandeur of their conceptions. Then one day, I met a girl, a wonderful girl, an army nurse, whose faith and stability were to change my whole life. As our acquaintance ripened into friendship, she discerned, behind a shell of gaiety, my recurring plateaus of depression. She said, “Stop knocking on closed doors. Keep up your beautiful music.I know your opportunity will come. You’re trying too hard. Why don’t you relax, and have you ever tried praying?”The idea was strange to me. It sounded too simple. Somehow, I had always operated on the premise that, if you wanted something in this world, you had to go out and get it for yourself. Yet, sincerity and hard work had yielded only meager returns, and I was willing to try anything. Experimentally, self-consciously, I cultivated the daily practice of prayer. I said: God, show me the purpose for which You sent me to this world. Help me to be of use to myself and to humanity. In the years to follow, the answers began to arrive, clear and satisfying beyond my most optimistic anticipation. One of the answers was Enchanted Hills, where my nurse friend and I have the privilege of seeing blind children come alive in God’s out-of-doors. Others are the never-ending sources of pleasure and comfort I have found in friendship, in great music, and, most important of all, in my growing belief that as I attune my life to divine revelation, I draw closer to God and, through Him, to immortality.

1Education and Schooling2It is commonly believed in the United States3that school is where people go to get an education.4Nevertheless,5it has been said6that today children interrupt their education to go to school.7The distinction between schooling and education8implied by this remark is important.9Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling.10Education knows no bounds.11It can take place anywhere,12whether in the shower or on the job;13whether in a kitchen or on a tractor.14It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools15and the whole universe of informal learning.16The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent17to the people debating politics on the radio,18from a child to a distinguished scientist.19Whereas schooling has a certain predictability,20education quite often produces surprises.21A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover22how little he knows of other religions.23People are engaged in education from infancy on.24Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term.25It is a lifelong process,26a process that starts long before the start of school,27and one that should be an integral part of one’s entire life.28Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process,29whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next.30Throughout a country,31children arrive at school at approximately the same time,32take assigned seats, are taught by an adult,33use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on.34The slices of reality that are to be learned,35whether they are the alphabet36or an understanding of the workings of government,37have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught.38For example,39high school students know40that they are not likely to find out in their classes41the truth about political problems in their communities42or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with.43There are definite conditions44surrounding the formalized process of schooling.。

Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles.Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life--these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University; I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them. Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and on the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim. Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen anddelicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man.

Discuss both views and give your own
(1) You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Some people think that it's better for children to go to boarding schools, while others think that they should go to day schools and stay with their parents.
Discuss these arguments and express your own opinion. Use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Write at least 250 words.
There has been much disagreement over children's education in recent years. One of the questions under debate is whether children benefit more from boarding schools or from going to day schools and staying with their parents after school. This issue is becoming a matter of concern for more and more people, especially for parents with only one child.
Those who are against children going to boarding schools argue that such schools are usually much more costly than ordinary day schools. As a result, it tends to be children from rich families who attend them may gradually develop a sense of superiority towards those from other families, while the latter may feel resentful. We also have to take into account the fact that many families cannot afford to send their children to boarding schools. Again, children attending boarding schools have less time to communicate with their parents, which may eventually create a gap between them, and weaken family ties.
On the other hand, people who are in favor of children going to boarding schools point out that a boarding school is an ideal place for cultivating children's independence, which they seldom learn from their parents at home. Children who have the experience of going to boarding schools tend to come up with their own solutions to problems they encounter instead of turning to their parents or other people for help. What is more, these children usually show a more cooperative attitude towards others in case of team work than the “little emperors” in many one child families. Finally, they are generally more used to competing with others and will find it easier to adapt to modern society, which is full of competition when they grow up.
Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the latter point of view. For one thing, it seems to me that there is more to education than merely learning from teachers and textbooks. The experience of living with other children and taking care of themselves can give children valuable lessons about how to behave properly, how to overcome difficulties and, most important of all, how to think rationally. I believe that children sometimes learn more from other children than from adults. For another, many parents are too busy with their work to pay enough attention to their children's growth even if their children go to day schools, not to mention the fact that there are still some parents who are not qualified to instruct children and impose more negative influences than positive ones.
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
In many countries, children participate in some paid work in their spare time. Some people think this is wrong, but others believe that such work will extend the children's knowledge and increase their sense of responsibility.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion. You should write at least 250 words. You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
In many countries, these days, there is a growing tendency for children to take
paid work, even though they are still receiving education in primary schools. Many people believe that children accumulate useful experience through this kind of work. But others criticize this on the ground that such work interferes with their studies.
