一． 汉译英概述

1．汉译英的重要性

经济全球化的日益发展，使文化全球化成为可能。如今，任何国家都不可能在一个封闭的环境下独善其身（stay alone and pay no attention to others），任何民族的文化发展，都离不开与其他文化的交流、借鉴（borrow ideas, draw lessons from each other）和融合（integration）。不同文化之间的交流，是人类发展的动力。

随着中国参与国际化进程日渐深入，中国人和中国商品走向世界，以及西方世界对于中国文化的浓厚兴趣，社会对于翻译实践提出了新的要求，即需要大量“汉译英”翻译人才将中文文本译成外文，尤其是英文。由于中国语言文字的特殊性，也由于历史和现实的原因，精通中文的外国人太少，所以要将中文优秀作品介绍到国外，必须由中国人自己来进行翻译工作。

2．汉译英人才短缺

中国缺乏“汉译英”人才。

中国目前每年汉译英的出版物仅1000多种，而每年进入中国的英译汉出版物却超过万种，是汉译英作品的14倍。（出版贸易逆差）

如果是把英文译成中文，每千字稿费需要50元至60元，而把中文译成英文或其他文字，稿费就达每千字300元。即便这样，也很难找到了解中国文化，又具有高超外语写作能力的人。能担此重任的，通常是汉学家（sinologist / Sinology: the knowledge or study of China, its language and culture）和在国外生活多年的中国学者。（赵月瑟 / deputy editor-in-chief, Shanghai Translation Publishing House）

3．汉译英是一个难点

一年一度的“韩素音青年翻译奖”是英籍著名华裔作家韩素音女

士，于1989年3月专门为中国青年人设立的，是目前我国最高的翻译竞赛奖。

汉译英历来是“韩赛”的薄弱项，每届都只有200左右的参赛选手，最多一届也未能突破400人。其中一个重要的因素，是我国目前的翻译教学实际厚“英译汉”训练而薄“汉译英”训练。这同我国改革开放以来前20年的翻译现状不无关系。国门洞开，西方科技文化典籍骤然大量引进，急需译成中文文本。从而，社会对英译汉翻译人才的需求，刺激并左右了高校翻译人才的培养侧重。现在的中国国情，则有了根本性的改变。

二．中式英语（Chinglish）

1．定义：

在使用英语时，由于受汉语思维方式或文化的影响而拼造出的生硬的、不符合英语表达习惯的、不规范的或畸形的英语。这是在中国的英语学习者中普遍存在的，却又是必然的一种语言现象。

例：某日，一中国人在美旅游，车祸受重伤。

前来营救的人问：

How are you?

答：I’m fine, and you?

营救者无语。

例：“Your wife, bottom up！” （一位官员的祝酒词）改译：A toast to your wife！

例：请勿乱扔果皮纸屑。

原译：Please don’t throw peels (outer covering or skin of fruit) of fruits and scraps of paper.

Question: How about other kinds of rubbish, such as cigarette butts?

改译：Please Don’t Litter.

例：闲人莫入

原译：Strangers are Forbidden to Enter.

改译：Staff Only

例：他去年成的家。

原译：He started a family last year.

Question: What does “start a family” mean?

We won’t have a family till we’ve been married a few years.

Family planning

改译：He got married last year.

例：在强烈的阳光下，我的脸被晒黑了。

原译：My face became black in the hot sun.

Definition of “black”: of a dark-skinned race

改译：My face was tanned in the hot sun.

Oxford defines “tan” as “become brown by exposure to the sun”

My skin tans easily.

She was very tanned when she came back from holiday.

2．对Chinglish的不同态度：

1）必须通过不断提高英语水平而逐渐消除Chinglish。

But as they prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games, officials in Beijing are waging war on Chinglish. The city has translation standards aimed at preventing linguistic disasters.

…but more often than not it just comes across as what it is: Bad English. "Chinglish," as the Chinese have come to call the linguistic massacre (killing of a large number of people),even has a mass of fans who troll the Internet for the most entertaining examples of bad English to share with friends…

Chinglish has become a running joke among many foreigners in China, and several websites have been set up listing humorous examples of mistranslation.

The mistranslations arise because many Chinese words express concepts obliquely and can be interpreted in multiple ways, making translation a minefield for non-English speakers.

2）对Chinglish应当适当鼓励、合理提倡。在不远的将来，Chinglish可以取得与澳大利亚英语和印度英语同样的地位，从而进入世界英语（World Englishes）之列。
