Passage One

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Women live longer than men because they are spoiled for choice. That is the startling conclusion of an international group of scientists who say they found the cause of female longevity.

They say females have two separate cell lines in their bodies, while men have only one. Women in old age can “choose” the more robust (强壮的) of these lines and survive for many more years.

Why there should be such a persistent cross-cultural gap between the life spans of the sexes has baffled scientists until now. In a paper in the journal Blood, and reported in the current issue of New Scientist, researchers at Odence University in Denmark and Ulleval University Hospital in Norway point to a key difference in the sex-determining chromosomes (染色体) found in the cells of men and women.

Every cell in a woman?s body has two X chromosomes, one inherited from her mother and the other from her father. In each cell, one of these two X chromosomes is switched off. This means that a woman is a mosatic (混合体) of two cell lines: one derived from her father?s X chromosome, the other from her mother?s. By contrast, every cell in a man?s body has an X and a Y chro mosome, neither of which is turned off. He has only one line. This difference could be crucial in determining the long-term health of men and women, scientists concluded, and so they decided to examine cells taken from young women.

They found an even division between their two different lines. However, when they looked at elderly females they found their bodies now favored one set of cells at

the expense of the other line. “This suggests that one of the cell lines is …better? than the other,” say the researchers. In other words, women?s bodies may select the more vigorous of the two cell lines and allow it to predominate the twilight of their years, giving them a crucial advantage over men, who have no chance of choosing the healthier of two sets of cells.

36.Women enjoy a longer life than men because_____.

A. women are entitled to longevity

B. women are favored by God

C. women are born to be so

D. women are spoiled in the world

37. The difference in the sex-determining chromosomes is that_____.

A. a woman inherits X chromosomes from her mother while a man from his

father

B. a woman inherits Y chromosomes from her mother while a man from his

father

C. a woman has an X and a Y chromosome while a man has two of them

D. a woman has two X chromosomes while a man has an X and a Y

chromosome

38. A great difference between men and women is that_____.

A. women have two chromosomes but men have only one

B. women have two cell lines but men have only one

C. women can choose from two chromosomes but men cannot

D. women can choose from two cells but men cannot

39. The word “their” (Line 1, Para.5) refers to______.

A. the scientists?

B. men?s

C. women?s

D. young women?s

40. “The twilight of their years” (Line 5, Para.5) refer to______.

A. their old years

B. their young years

C. their good years

D. their bad years

Passage Two

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage.

The word science is heard so often in modern times that almost everybody has some notion of its meaning. The meaning of the term is confusing, but everyone should understand its meaning and objectives. Just to make the explanation as simple as possible, just suppose science is defined as classified knowledge.

Even in true sciences, distinguishing fact from fiction is not always easy. For this reason great care should be taken to distinguish between beliefs and truths. For example, hypotheses and theories are attempts to explain natural phenomena. From these positions scientists continue to experiment and observe until they are proved. The exact status of any explanation should be clearly labeled to avoid confusion..

The objectives of science are primarily the discovery and the subsequent understanding of the unknown. Man cannot be satisfied with recognizing that secrets exist in nature or that questions are unanswerable; he must solve them. Toward that end specialists in the field of biology and related fields of interest are directing much of their time and energy.

Actually two basic approaches lead to the discovery of new information. One, aimed at satisfying curiosity, is referred to as pure science. The other is aimed at using knowledge for specific purposes such as improving health, or creating new consumer products. In this case knowledge is put to economic use. Such an approach is referred to as applied science.

Sometimes practical-minded people miss the point of pure science in thinking only of its immediate application for economic reward. Chemists responsible for discoveries could hardly anticipate that their findings would one day result in applications of such a practical nature as those directly related to life and death. The discovery of one bit of information opens the door to the discovery of another. However, one should remember that the construction of microscope had to proceed the discovery of the cell. Many scientists dedicating their lives to pure science are not apologetic about ignoring the practical side of their discoveries; they know from experience that most knowledge is eventually applied.

41.To define science, we can simply name it as________.

A.the study of nature and mankind

B.the attempt to pose and prove hypotheses and theories

C.categorized knowledge

D.the study of unrelated natural phenomena

42.A scientist interested in general knowledge about oxygen would probably

call his approach _______.

A.applied science

B.chemical science

C.pure science

D.environmental science

43.Which of the following sentences about pure science is true?

A.It may lead to antiscientific, impure results.

B.It necessarily proceeds applied science.

C.It is not always as pure as we suppose.

D.It necessarily results from applied science.

44.Which of the following is implied in the passage?

A.Pure scientists should not be blamed for ignoring the practical side of

their discoveries.

B.Today fewer people have any notion of the meaning of science.

C.In true sciences, it is not difficult to distinguish fact from fiction.

D.Practical-minded people can understand the meaning and objectives of

pure science.

45. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A. On Distinguishing Fact from Fiction

B. Biology and the Scientific Age

C. Hypotheses and Theories

D. The Nature of Science

Paper Two

Part IV. Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes, 10%)

Directions: In this part you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions. For questions 1---7, mark Y (for YES)

if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage; N

(for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the

passage; NG ( for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in

the passage. For questions 8---10, complete the sentences with the

information given in the passage.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad

I had two fathers, a rich one and a poor one. One was highly educated and intelligent; he had a Ph.D. and completed four years of undergraduate work in less than two years. He then went on to Stanford University, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University to do his advanced studies, all on full financial scholarships. The other father never finished the eighth grade.

Both men were successful in their careers, working hard all their lives. Both earned substantial incomes. Yet one struggled financially all his life. The other

would become one of the richest men in Hawaii. One died leaving tens of millions of dollars to his family, charities and his church. The other left bills to be paid.

Both men were strong, charismatic and influential. Both men offered me advice, but they did not advise the same things. Both men believed strongly in education but did not recommend the same course of study.

If I had had only one dad, I would have had to accept or reject his advice. Having two dads advising me offered me the choice of contrasting points of view; one of a rich man and one of a poor man. Instead of simply accepting or rejecting one or the other, I found myself thinking more, comparing and then choosing for myself.

As a young boy, having two strong fathers both influencing me was difficult.

I wanted to be a good son and listen, but the two fathers did not say the same things. The contrast in their points of view, particularly where money was concerned, was so extreme that I grew curious and intrigued. I began to start thinking for long periods of time about what each was saying.

Much of my private time was spent reflecting, asking myself questions such as, "Why does he say that?" and then asking the same question of the other dad's statement. It would have been much easier to simply say, "Yeah, he's right. I agree with that." Or to simply reject the point of view by saying, "The old man doesn't know what he's talking about." Instead, having two dads whom I loved forced me to think and ultimately choose a way of thinking for myself. As a process, choosing for myself turned out to be much more valuable in the long run, rather than simply accepting or rejecting a single point of view.

Because I had two influential fathers, I learned from both of them. I had to think about each dad's advice, and in doing so, I gained valuable insight into the power and effect of one's thoughts on one's life. For example, one dad had a habit of saying, "I can't afford it." The other dad forbade those words to be used. He insisted I say, "How can I afford it?" One is a statement, and the other is a question. One lets you off the hook, and the other forces you to think. My soon-to-be-rich dad would explain that by automatically saying the words "I can't afford it," your brain stops working. By asking the question "How can I afford it?" your brain is put to work. He did not mean buy everything you wanted. He was fanatical about exercising your mind, the most powerful computer in the world. "My brain gets stronger every day because I exercise it. The stronger it gets, the more money I can make." He believed that automatically saying "I can't afford it" was a sign of mental laziness.

My two dads had opposing attitudes in thought. One dad thought that the

rich should pay more in taxes to take care of those less fortunate. The other said, "Taxes punish those who produce and reward those who don't produce."

One dad recommended, "Study hard so you can find a good company to work for." The other recommended, "Study hard so you can find a good company to buy."

One dad said, "The reason I'm not rich is because I have you kids." The other said, "The reason I must be rich is because I have you kids."

One encouraged talking about money and business at the dinner ,table. The other forbade the subject of money to be discussed over a meal.

One dad believed in a company or the government taking care of you and your needs. He was always concerned about pay raises, retirement plans, medical benefits, sick leave, vacation days and other perks.

The other believed in total financial self-reliance. He spoke out against the "entitlement" mentality and how it was creating weak and financially needy people. He was emphatic about being financially competent.

One dad struggled to save a few dollars. The other simply created investments.

One dad taught me how to write an impressive resume so I could find a good job. The other taught me how to write strong business and financial plans so I could create jobs.

My poor dad would also say, "I'm not interested in money," or "Money doesn't matter." My rich dad always said, "Money is power."

As a young boy, having two fathers, I became acutely aware of being careful which thoughts I chose to adopt as my own. Whom should I listen to--- my rich dad or my poor dad?

Although both men had tremendous respect for education and learning, they disagreed in what they thought was important to learn. One wanted me to study hard, earn a degree and get a good job to work for money. He wanted me to study to become a professional, an attorney or an accountant or to go to business school for my MBA. The other encouraged me to study to be rich, to understand how money works and to learn how to have it work for me. "I don't work for money!" were words he would repeat over and over, "Money works for me!"

At the age of 9, I decided to listen to and learn from my rich dad about money. In doing so, I chose not to listen to my poor dad, even though he was the one with all the college degrees.

fathers.
