Teachers are urged to use YouTube to inspire bored students, said Sanjay Sarma, director of digital learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US.

Teachers should abandon hour-long lessons in favor of ten minute videos to stop their students' minds wandering, said Sanjay Sarma, a leading education expert. Traditional teaching methods which rely on pupils paying attention for an hour are outdated, according to Sanjay Sarma. He said schools and universities needed to adapt to the Internet age by breaking teaching down into bite-sized video lessons.

"The way we teach today is based on lectures, which is still a factory-style system," he told the Times Educational Supplement (TES), "But cognitive(认知的) science and cognitive psychology tell us that students learn in a way that, frankly, isn't compatible with lectures."

In order to capture their attention, students needed to be given knowledge "when they need it" rather than during long lectures, Professor Sarma said.

He added, "The human mind wanders and what we do is make the student feel unhappy about it. In fact, you're better off doing 10-minute lectures and then asking the students questions about what they just learned, because that transfers what they learn from our short-term memory to our long-term memory."

Earlier this year it is reported that Ark Schools, one of England's biggest academy chains, was planning on setting up a school in which learning through online videos is blended with traditional teaching. Pupils will do a significant amount of learning on computers at the Ark Pioneer Academy, which is due to open in London in September 2017.

Simon Mason, headteacher of Honywood School in Essex, which has supplied all pupils with iPads, told the TES: "Pupils use these computers in their lessons, and the academic results have turned out to be satisfactory. In my experience, young people are able to concentrate for far longer than 10 minutes if they are involved in learning something where they are able to make authentic(真实的) choices."

Over the years, some teachers and editors have said they do not trust the information on the website Wikipedia. They say some of the people who provide the pieces for the website may not be qualified to write them. But recently, an American medical school has provided an unusual course meant to aid doctors and other Wikipedia users.

Students at the medical school of the University of California, San Francisco are taking a class that teaches them how to write and edit for the WikiProject Medicine part of Wikipedia. Dr. Amin Azzam leads the course.

Dr. Azzam asks his students to read Wikipedia, identify missing information and update pieces on the site. He says the students need to do this from their own medical knowledge and from dependable medical sources.

Fourth-year medical student Raquel Kronen signed up to take the course. She has medical knowledge. Still, her writing needs improvement. Ms. Kronen says you need both skills to be a Wikipedia editor. "You have to be able to know your information, express your information in a way that's appropriate for the general public, and then really, just, write in a clear fashion."

Students first attend some intensive classes. A guide explains how to present material on Wikipedia. The guide demands that the writing should be understandable to people who read at the sixth-grade level.

WikiProject Medicine has 32,000 health-related pages ranked in order by importance and quality. Dr. Azzam's students must improve one of the pages. Students have updated articles on two liver diseases, diabetes, white blood cells and race and health. One of the highest-ranked pages tells about Ebola. That page has been viewed many millions of times. James Heilman reduced his hours as a Canadian emergency room doctor to spend more time on the Ebola page. Ten or twelve others work with him. Dr. Heilman is one of few editors whose name is known. Identities of Wikipedia's volunteer editors generally are not given.

Student Raquel Kronen said she chose an article on post-partum depression because she had a friend with the disorder. She is trying to decide what is useful to put in her chosen article. She said she keeps asking herself what her friend would want to know.

Social media has become a part of all our lives. It is the communication tool that children have been brought up with, but it is still illegal for a Canadian child under the age of 13 to have a social media page.

This is a shame when you consider the teaming opportunities that social media offers. At our school, Vernon Christian Elementary School in Vernon, B.C., I can see how it provides children with the chance to learn how to communicate appropriately and effectively. If they want their friends to follow them or re-tweet(转发) their messages, they must learn to write them creatively in an interesting and amusing style, attach relevant pictures, and ask questions to invite a response. Students will learn a lot from the process.

Social media can also help students to sharpen up their writing skills. My students usually use the blog feature to keep a diary about something that interests them, and suddenly they appear to love writing.

So is the social media age restriction necessary? Not really. A survey has found that 59 percent of children have already used a social network by the time they are 10, and 43 percent have messaged people they didn't know by the age of 12.

Of course, primary schools should be aware of dangers of social media. Measures should be taken to protect students from the dangers. In our school, we have a social media platform with a teacher's dashboard(信息窗) where all activities can be monitored. On one occasion, a boy wrote hurtful comments about a girl in a post message. After a discussion with him about why it is wrong to send hurtful emails, he was embarrassed and said sorry to the victim.

Over the past 28 years teaching in British Columbia, I have focused on computing. I am therefore very aware of the negative effects of social media on primary school students. However, social media offers a learning and communicating opportunities to elementary students. More importantly, we can not ignore the fact that elementary children are using social media. I strongly believe that exposing students to the social media will equip them to be wiser grown-ups in the future.

10. In which country is a child below 13 not allowed to have a social media page by law?

A. Britain.

B. Canada.

C. The USA.

D. France.

11. The underlined phrase "sharpen up" can be replaced by .

A. prevent

B. keep

C. improve

D. use

12. How does the writer support his/her argument in the fourth paragraph?

A. By examples.

B. By proverbs.

C. By comparisons.

D. By statistics.

13. The writer believes that exposing students to the social media is .

A. harmful

B. beneficial

C. unnecessary

D. wrong

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. (1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________. A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol (2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision? 新高考赢在阅读高二英语时文阅读专版(含原文翻译及答案解析) A Josh Gad's Olaf showed insanely hot skills singing "Unmeltable Me" for "Frozen II". But the hilarious (欢闹的) tune never made it into the animated hit: It was cut from the movie after his vocals were recorded and storyboards had been drawn up. The missing: “Unmeltable Me”is revealed now at https://www.360docs.net/doc/e111413423.html,, ahead of the home release of “Frozen II”, which features the deleted scene as an extra. The ditty was the first song written for the sequel. The new song features Gad's Olaf singing style, playing harpsichord (羽管键琴) accompaniment. The instrument was requested by directors for comedic reasons. The harpsichord arrangement made it funny and different. The filmmakers originally wanted “Unmeltable Me”to explain an important story point –why Olaf no longer needed the magical “flurry”cloud Elsa had created at the end of "Frozen" to keep the snowman from melting in warm weather. Creating the flurry effect was so difficult for the animators that the directors decided Elsa would have perfected a permafrost coating for Olaf by the second movie. The scene features Olaf doing just about everything to show off his new permafrost coating, from sticking a lit candle into his head to placing his head in a Sterno-heated buffet tray. Olaf's audience in the scene is a group of dignitaries who have traveled to Arendelle from around the world to meet the powerful Elsa at a state dinner. Elsa and Anna are held up, so Olaf fills time entertaining the assembled guests with the song. Sadly, “Unmeltable Me”was cut before it could be fully animated. 高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.
