Euthanasia, also known as mercy killing, is a way of painlessly terminating the lives
of those who are either suffering from an incurable disease or are in immense pain.
Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200
words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and
give your views on the issue.
Should Euthanasia Be Legalized?

An individual should have the liberty to choose induced death if he is suffering from an incurable disease where even the best treatment doesn't improve his quality of life. Legalizing euthanasia would help alleviate suffering in terminally ill patients. It would be inhumane and unfair to make them endure the unbearable pain. Euthanasia should be a natural extension of patient's rights allowing him to decide the value of life and death. If the patient has the right to discontinue treatment, why would he not have the right to shorten his lifetime to escape the anguish? Isn't the pain of waiting for death more traumatic? Health care expenditure is and will always be a concern for the family, and only those who can afford a prolonged unproductive treatment will continue to do so. A section of those in support of mercy killing often ask whether it is rational to keep a person - who has no hopes of survival, alive on a support system when our medical infrastructure is already under immense pressure. Mercy killing is morally incorrect and
should be forbidden by law. It is
homicide and murdering another
human cannot be rationalized under any
circumstances.
Even doctors cannot firmly predict
about the period of death and whether
there is a possibility of remission with
advanced treatment. So, implementing
euthanasia would mean many unlawful
deaths that could have well survived
later. Legalizing euthanasia would be
like empowering law abusers and
increasing distrust of patients towards
doctors.
Human life deserves exceptional
security and protection. Advanced
medical technology has made it possible
to enhance human life span and quality
of life. Palliative care and rehabilitation
centers are better alternatives to help
disabled or patients approaching death
live a pain-free and better life.
The Average Worker Expense in City X
As can be seen from the table, the monthly income of an average worker had
increased by nearly 50 percent from 1999 to 2004. Workers spent less money on food,
the percentage decreased from 62% to 54%. What’s more, the expense on fuel in
2004(3%) dropped to half that of 1999(6%). On the contrary, workers spent more
money on housing and articles for daily use, and the expense on culture and service
also increased a little. The percentage of clothing remained unchanged throughout the
five years; it was 12%.
The different changes proved the great leap forward in people’s living standard.
First of all, not only could they be satisfied by the basic needs in life, but they could
afford to buy houses, spend more on daily use articles, and pay more attention to their
spiritual cultivation. In addition, the obvious decrease in the expense on fuel may well
indicate the fast development in science and technology, and people’s growing
consciousness of environmental protection. Last but not least, the unchanging
percentage of expense on clothing showed people’s concern of their physical
appearances and social courtesy.
All in all, people in city X could enjoy a much better life than five years ago.
With the development of social economy, it is predictable that they would continue to
see a higher standard of living in the near future.
