Module 4 课时跟踪练(一) Introduction & Reading —Pre-readingⅠ.阅读理解ASamuel Osmond is a 19yearold law student from Cornwall, England. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲) by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me — I hear the notes and can bear them in mind — each and every note,” says Samuel.Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently, “It’s all about super memory — I guess I ha ve that gift.”However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies. 语篇解读:本文为记叙文。

角顿市安康阳光实验学校Module 4 Music Section ⅠⅠ阅读理解A“Angie,I know you like to sing,”her father,a worker, told Angela Brown,“but you must have something to fall back on(依靠).”Brown took her father’s advice. She got a degree in secretarial science before entering Oakwood College,in Huntsville,Alabama. However, her aim was to become a singer at religious meetings. So after graduation she headed for Indiana University to study with the famous soprano(女高音歌手) Virginia Zeani.Once, when Brown was troubled by self-doubt,Zeani said to her,“If you want to be the next Aretha__Franklin,you need no more lessons.”Brown remembers her saying.“But if you want to be the best Verdian soprano this world has ever seen, you must work.”Work she did. Three times she competed in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions(试演).Three times she failed to make the final round in New York. Then,in 1997 at age 33,the age limit for sopranos to audition, she gave it one more try.She signed up at the last minute and didn’t even practice, thinking,“All they could do was to tell me no,and that didn’t hurt my feelings anymore.”She had the strength she needed to fall back on if she failed. She won. But making it in New York was just the beginning. It took her three more years to become an understudy(替角) at the Met. But waiting in the wings was fine with her. Finally, her time came. When the featured singer fell ill,Brown earned the chance to sing the lead role in Aida. And The New York Times described her performance as a great success. Angela Brown, who had prepared for 20 years, was an “overnight” successful singer at age 40.【解题导语】本文讲述了歌手Angela Brown虽历经多次挫折和失败,仍不放弃,最终实现了自己的梦想的故事。

The challenge here is the current trend of looking for “new”. In fact, the “old” music has great value. While there is nothing wrong with creating new — and indeed, today's good creation will be tomorrow's tradition — it is misleading to use this to judge music-making. Even for the same piece, every performance is “original and new”, not to mention the different environments and audiences. In a real sense, one can't separate music from musician. When the musician dies, his or her music no longer exists. Recording is not the real thing. That is repeating, not music-making, which is very different from painting.
Liu Fang is recognised as one of the most successful pipa players as well as a sensitive performer on the guzheng. She has cooperated with world-class musicians all around the world and has released several albums. The following article is written by her about how she thinks of performances and her understanding of music.

Module 4 Which EnglishInternet EnglishTwenty years ago the British inventor Tim BernersLee created the world's first webpage. It is worth pausing to consider the extraordinary influence that his invention has had on the English language. Everyday words like google, unfriend and app simply didn't exist in 1990. Even more words have had unexpected changes in meaning in those two decades. If you had mentioned tweeting to an Englishspeaker a few years ago, he would have assumed you were talking about bird noises, not the use of the microblogging site Twitter.Long ago, if someone lived online, it didn't mean they spent every waking minute on the Internet, but that they travelled around with the rail network.“The Internet is an amazing medium for languages,” said David Crystal, honorary professor of linguistics at the University of Bangor. “Language itself changes slowly but the Internet has speeded up the process of those changes so you notice them more quickly.”English is a remarkably inclusive language, and if words continue to be used for at least five years they generally end up in the Oxford English Dictionary.,[阅读障碍词]app (application program) n.应用程序medium n.媒介honorary adj.荣誉的;名誉的remarkably adv.非常地,显著地,引人注目地inclusive adj.包容广泛的Ⅰ.Match the word with its meaning.1.instantly A.方言,地方话2.recognisable B.痕迹,踪迹3.dialect C.立即,马上4.matter D.语调5.count E.伦敦东区土话6.trace F.独一无二的;独特的7.unique G.双语的,会讲两种语言的8.intonation H.讨论;辩论9.author I.祖先,前辈10.ancestor J.节奏;韵律11.link K.联系12.rhythm L.作家,作者13.bilingual M.很重要;很有价值14.debate N.重要,要紧;有关系15.cockney O.能辨认的,能认出的答案:1~5 COANM 6~10 BFDLI 11~15 KJGHEⅡ.Write do wn the meaning of phrases in each sentence.1.I don't know which one is mine. 课下能力提升(十三)阅读理解AThe crowd cheered and cheered. The man with the horn waved and smiled his great, happy smile.“More! More!” cried the crowd. And Louis Armstrong took his horn and began to play again. Here he was in England. Now as a famous man, he was rich. He knew many important people. Wherever he went, people knew his name. They wanted to hear his music. As Louis played the sad, slow songs, he thought of his home in New Orleans. He lived there as a boy. How many years ago was it? It was a busy, exciting city. But Louis' family was very poor. He went to work to help his mother. He also went to school. One of Louis' teachers asked him to be in the school band.“This horn is yours until you leave our school,” his teacher said. Louis' music was jazz and he loved it. He remembered all the music he heard. He didn't learn to read music until he was a man. When he left school, he played in many bands. He loved his work and people loved him. They knew he had a wonderful talent. Louis played on the boats that sailed up and down the river. He played in little towns and in big cities. Louis's horn had as many sounds as ten horns — sometimes slow and sweet; sometimes fast and hot, high and low. His mu sic was always strong and exciting.“He does make wonderful music,” said the man who listened happily.“Yes,” said another man,“he makes that horn speak.” Then the music ended and the crowd cheered. Louis Armstrong spoke with tears in his eyes,“I think, my f riends, you can listen to as much jazz as I can play. I thought jazz was my music, but now I understand it is ours. Isn't it beautiful how music brings us together?”语篇解读:本文主要介绍了音乐家Louis和他的乐器。
