Unit 1 Festivals around the worldⅠ.阅读理解A[2020·合肥市高三第三次教学质量检测]The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, falls on the second day of the second lunar month every year, and recognizes the start of spring and farming. This year it falls on March 8.Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall increases because the rain-bringing Dragon King has awakened from his winter sleep. A well-known phrase goes, “Eryueer, longtaitou,\〞 meaning,“On the second day of the second month, the dragon lifts his head.\〞The festival celebrates ancient agrarian Chinese culture, and while some of traditional ways to celebrate it are no longer practiced, others continue to exist. The most famous tradition is getting a haircut. Some believe that going to the barber on this day gets rid of bad luck, while others believe getting a haircut during the first month of the lunar calendar brings bad luck. Another saying warns that cutting your hair in the first month will cause your uncle to die. Although today few pay attention to it, it was once a tradition to line up outside barbershops on the day of Longtaitou.People eat tofu balls in East China's Fujian province during the festival, and often make tofu and vegetable balls to pray for family and business. Fried beans are the traditional festival food for people in parts of Shandong province. Eating chengyao cakes, which are made with sticky rice, during the festival is a tradition in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, owing to the saying,“If you eat chengyao on Longtaitou, your waist won't hurt all year.\〞 Meanwhile other foods, like noodles, dumplings, and spring rolls, are named after dragon body parts to mark the day. Noodles are dragon's beard (longxu), dumplings are dragon's ears (longer), spring rolls dragon's scales (longlin).1.What did ancient people believe after Dragon-Head-Raising Festival?A.The dragon lifts his head.B.There's more rainfall.C.The dragon is still sleeping.D.There's less rainfall.2.What does the u nderlined word “agrarian\〞 mean in Paragraph 3?A.Agricultural. Home has become more of a feeling than a place. I feel at home when I am with my family in London, but I also feel at home in Italy with friends I love. Home is no longer a picture of a house with a front door and some windows. It is more complicated than that. This is one of the reasons that celebrating the new year has become very important for me. I do not care about “New Year's resolutions(新年计划)〞— living abroad has made me constantly reconsider what kind of person I want to be and how I will live my life, so I don't feel the need to plan for change: I live for change.New Year's Eve has become my time to reconnect with the friends, which makes me feel at home. Every year we try to reunite wherever we are, and remember the time when we knew each other so well that we felt like a family. It is a moment to reconnect and get to know each other again. Last year, we travelled to a cottage in Irelandwhere we had no Internet and no neighbours. In the middle of the countryside, away from our constantly changing lives, we were able to become like a little family again. This year, we went to Barcelona. It was a very big change. We were surrounded by culture and life and joy. There were bars and parties. It was different, but one thing stayed very much the same — I felt at home again and we felt like a family again.A lot of people feel that New Year's Eve cannot live up to expectations. Ideas such a s the “New Year's kiss\〞and “resolutions\〞 create a lot of pressure for people to have a night to remember, a night that will change their lives and perhaps make the next year worth living. I think those people are missing the point. Why can't New Year be about friends?5.What does the underlined word “It\〞 in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Family. B.Living abroad.C.Home. D.Staying with friends.6.Why doesn't the author care about “New Year's resolutions\〞?A.New Year's resolutions cannot be reached.B.His lifestyle makes him always ready for change.C.It's meaningless to make any big changes in life.D.Making New Year's resolutions creates much pressure.7.What does the author try to convey through his experiences in Ireland and Barcelona?A. Life is peaceful and enjoyable.B.Living abroad is a happy experience.C.Staying with friends makes one feel at home.D.Travelling abroad enriches one's life experience.8.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. New Year's Celebration: How?B.True Friendship: What?C.Living Abroad:Comfortable or Complicated?D.Change:Plan It or Make It?Ⅱ.完形填空[2020·昆明市高考模拟考试]When Markita was little, her mother said to her, “I'll work hard to make enough money to send you to a famous college. Unit 1 Festivals around the worldⅠ.阅读理解AOnly 95km from Verona airport,Folgaria is a mid-sized resort (度假胜地) in the northern Italy that has a reputation for its white snow.It also has a wonderful and long ski history. The first ski lift in Italy was built here in the 1930s and a full ski resort was created shortly after the war.Since then the piste (滑雪道) has grown to cover 104km.About two-thirds of that is local to Folgaria itself; the other 30km is above the neighbouring villages of Lavarone and Luserna,a short bus ride away. Folgaria is proud of its history and culture. You’re unlikely to hear English spoken here and in some bars it won’t even be Italian, but Cimbro, the Bavarian language brought to these mountains by medieval (中世纪的) settlers. It’s also ref lected in the food culture.Pure local mountain honey is a key part of many of the desserts. You can enjoy it when you come to ski.Besides the bars, restaurants and a few small hotels, the community is also seeking to add dog-sledding and mountain bikes. There’s also special effort made for families, with a new children’s park.Where to eat?We offer chocolate and ice-cream at La Baita del Gelato, and the pizza, made with local cheese.Where to stay? The modern three-star Luna Bianca hotel is one of the most popular hotels in Folgaria, with big, clean rooms and good service. The ski bus stops outside the front door.Half-board doubles from 360 for three nights in mid-December.PricesLift pass prices (and most other in-resort costs) are around half what you might payin a big resort in the French Alps. The cost is as low as 163 for a person’s six-day pass. The price is 209 during holiday.Children under 8 ski free all season. To book your ticket and hotel, please click here!【语篇解读】本文是应用文,本文主要介绍了意大利的滑雪胜地——福尔加里亚。

Unit 1 Festivals around the world Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2017·临沂一中模拟) One day, I noticed the most beautiful Cadillac pull in the lot while waiting for my husband. A pretty female driver pulled into the spot beside our car. There was a striking resemblance to Liz Taylor. Her eyes were as blue as the sea, and teeth like an even row of pearls. A few minutes later, a nice looking man entered her car, leaned over and kissed her and she drove away. Sitting there, I wanted to cry. How could some people have it all? Then it became almost routine to see her about once a week. She seemed friendly and always waved, flashing a big smile. My envy continued to exist long after she drove away. A couple of weeks later, sitting in our usual parking lot, I was holding a book, watching her over the top of it. Her husband came to the car, took her arm and helped her out of the car. I could see very well as she moved to get out. She unsteadily walked around to the passenger side very slowly, leaning on a walking cane. Sitting sideways, she lifted one leg with her hands and then the other. The beautiful lady had a prosthesis (假肢) on the left leg and a brace (支持物) on the right leg. I couldn't watch them drive away as the tears were blinding me. Through my tears, I told my husband about the beautiful lady. He said he knew her husband and the story. The lady and her parents were in a car that got caught on the railroad tracks and was hit by a train. Both parents were killed and she was severely injured. She was only 12 years old. The railroad made a large settlement with her because the crossing had no signals. He explained her car was specially built for her needs as well as the home. I prayed for forgiveness all the way home. The lady I thought had everything I didn't. I realized how lucky I was to have my parents, the ability to walk, run or dance through life and many wonderful things money can't buy. I would not have traded places with the beautiful lady for anything. When you meet a person who seems to be much better off than you, don't be fooled. 1.Why did the author want to cry when noticing the beautiful lady? A.Regretting her marriage. B.Admiring the lady's appearance. C.Knowing the lady's suffering. D.Leaving without waving to the lady. 4.What does the author want to tell us? A.Seeing is believing. B.Looks can be deceiving. C.Happiness consists in beauty. D.Everything happens for the best. B (2017·潍坊模拟) It is a live celebration of the lasting power of letter writing! Letters Live, which started in December 2013, was held at the Freemasons' Hall

in London from March 10 to 15. The show invited various great performers who read remarkable letters that had been written around the world over the centuries. “Bringing letters alive through outstanding performances is one of the most powerful ways in which the joy and pain and humor and tragedy of being human can be shared,” Jamie Byng, managing director of Canongate Books publishing firm, told the Nowness video channel. British actor Benedict Cumberbatch agreed. “Letters are windows into the love, beauty, pain and humor of their creators and receivers,” he told The Guardian. “Letters Live makes us stop and imagine the lives behind the letters read and where they came from. It's a privilege to read this most ancient of communications live to an audience.” This year, the movie Sherlock star treated the audience by playing the part of a 17year Tom Hanks. He put on the young actor's voice when he read his letter to the Hollywood director George Roy Hill, a letter that urged Hill to “discover” him. The letter revealed that twotime Oscar winner Hanks' teenage dream was not to “be a bigtime Hollywood superstar” but to one day own a Porsche car and call his favorite US actor Robert Redford his nickname “Bob”. Other famous faces at the event included Carey Mulligan, who played a fictional laundry worker, a female activist fighting for women's rights in the 2015 movie Suffragette. The British actress once again played the role of a suffragette, when
