The fixity of idioms depends on the idiomaticity. The more idiomatic the idioms, the more fixed the structure. Look at the following three examples:

Classification of idioms
1. Idioms nominal in nature
1) brain trust: a group of people with special knowledge who give advice.
By regular combinations we speak of the regular collocations such as “make friends with” , the meaning of which can be understood from the literal meanings of the constituents.
*It is worth John’s while.
也不可以是不定代词:
?It is not worth anybody’s while.
允许插入的所有格代名词,在可接 受程度上也有差异:your 可接受性 程度最大,my大概最小: ?It is worth my while.
没有疑问式:
*Whose while is it worth?
(他睡得很死) 可以对这一成语在人称和时间 上作些变动: She is dead to the world.

Wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve:

to take courage, to take heart
The fright that he took was indicative of his timidity. ?The courage that he took was indicative of his inner resources. *The heart that he took was indicative of his optimism.
In between we have idioms like “ turn over a new leaf”, whose meaning is in a way related to the meanings of the constituents, but is not itself explicit.
I am accustomed to cold weather. I am used to cold weather. Accustomed as I am to cold weather, I still prefer Florida. *Used as I am to cold weather, I still prefer Florida.
2. Verb phrases: Follow one’s nose: go straight ahead; go in the same direction
Swim against the stream: do the opposite of what most people want to do
He regarded me strangely.
*He regarded me for ten minutes.
4.形容词和名词的固定搭配 She was there the livelong day. *She was there the livelong morning ( week, year). They slept till broad daylight. *They slept till daylight was broad.
