His father was a good athlete, and passed his ability on to his kids.Michael’s coach told Michaelc’s mother that her son was a raretelent.Long-limbed with big hands and feet, he took to instruction very well, loved to work hard and never seemed nervous is competition. The appeal of the interview has everything to do with the human factor. Most people believe that they are a reasonable judge of character and trust their instinctive feeling. We might use some kind of test to aid theselection process, but we usually pick a candidate who interviews well, has good qualifications and impressive work record. But suppose the candidate lies or is less than completely honest. “This can be a serious problem for employers”, explains Alan Conrad, Chief Executive at Optimus Recruiment. “The most difficult liars to find are those who tell half-truths rather than complete lies.”Research shows that up to 75 percent of resumes are inaccurate on purpose. The most common practice is omission.Interviewer should therefore concentrate on areas of uncertainy such as gaps between periods of employment and job descriptions that seem strange. “Focusing on these areas will force candidates to tell the truth or become increasingly dishonest. This is usually when people signal their anxiety by their body language. Sweat on the upper lip, false smiles and nervous hand movements all indicate discomfort.”Conrad does not suggest an aggressive policy-style interview technique , but insists that close inspection of a resume is absolutely essential. Only by asking the right questions can you confirm the suitability of the candidate or put pressure on those who are being less than completely honest.21. The best title of this passage can be ___________.A. How to Catch Out the Dishonest CandidateB. How to Find a Job by TricksC. Disadvantages of Job InterviewsD. Advantages of Job Interviews22. Coots need to be tricky because of the nunsual way the animals. Compete: One coot will put its eggs secretly into another’s nest to trick the host into raising the invader’s eggs. But nest owners use their wits to fight back, Lyon finds.Over four summers, Lyon monitored 400 coot nests near Williams Lake in central British Columbia, tagging the eggs with a marker. Of these , 160 coot nests received eggs from unrelated coots. The hosts generally were not fooled, however,. About half the time, coot parents rejected thestrange eggs completely, usually by burying them deep in the nest.“Foreign eggs were not disappearing by chance ---and that can only mean the birds were recognizing them, ”Lyon says. Apparently , the coots were alerted by the unfamiliar colors and patterns on the foreign eggs. In other cases, the parents pushed the foreign eggs to an unfavorable position at the border area of the nest, where there is less heat for hatching.Even if a mother coot didn’t remove the foreign eggs from her nest, she continued to lay a normal hatch number of her own eggs, despite theapparent extra foreign eggs. Lyon thinks that means the coots somehow kept a count of both their own eggs an d the suspicious ones. “That coots can distinguish their own eggs from the foreign ones is a rare but very convincing example of counting wild animal world,” the ecologistconcluded.26. The meaning of the bird’s name “coot”probably is __________.A. wonderful and amazingB. unusual and remarkableC. secret and unbelievableD. old and silly27. It is reached by a delightful road that drops down 700 meters over two huge "steps" of rock to the sea.Tourists go down to Apollonia in the afternoon, after they have spent the morning in Cyrene. Both places were cities long ago, and they are full of interesting and beautiful ruins. There is more to be seen in Cyrene -- on the ground, you understand. If you want to know the excitement of an underwater city, Apollonia is the place. Some ruins of Apollonia are on the mainland. Some are on an island a thousand meters from the short. The rest now lie between, under eight or ten meters of water. The sea is warm, seldom rough. It is often almost as clear as glass. On a still day, then, swim out towards the island. Swim under water as much as you can, with your eyes open. Look down.First you see a street, with houses and shops on both sides. Their roofs have fallen in, but the walls are standing. Some shops have a big stone table -- a counter perhaps -- and stone shelves. At the end of this street you come to a square. It has a wide pavement all around, and some buildings open directly on to the pavement. Were they cafes Did the waiters put tables and chairs on the pavement in summer long agoOver two thousand years ago the king of Egypt visited the city. He brought his daughter Cleopatra with him. She was ten years old at the time, and her father built a huge swimming bath for her. You can still see Cleopatra's Bath, behind the cafes in the square. These halls are popularly called "dorms." Residence halls may offer various types of living accommodations. There are single rooms, in which a student lives alone but there probably are a good many more double rooms, which two students share. Some dorms have sets of rooms, where small groups of students have separate bedrooms but share a bathroom and maybe a study room. There are usually a number of conveniences available for those living in university residence halls. Most have washing machines and clothes dryers for use by the residents. Many dorms have kitchens where students can prepare light meals. Residence halls generally provide not only room and board but public rooms and recreational facilities娱乐设施and sometimes study rooms for their use.If you live in a dormitory you need to know what the rules and regulations are. Meals usually are served at only certain hours, and you must be there at those hours if you expect to eat. There may be only certain hours when visitors may come, or they may be limited to certain areas of the dormitory. Often cooking in bedrooms is prohibited禁止, and the use of certain pieces of electrical equipment such as coffee pots or hair dryers may be limited. Living in a residence hall carries certain obligation义务. You have to be considerate of others, especially during study hours. Telephone calls and visits by friends should be short. You have to cooperate in keeping the room as neat as possible. It is sometimes hard to be tolerant of another person's habits that may differ from your own.21. Residence halls in American universities provide ______.A single rooms shared by two students.B apartments for small groups of students.C double rooms for two students.D separate rooms with a common bathroom.22. They feel they are poor listeners when they think about something else while the other is talking or when they're tired, or not interested in what she or he is talking about. In fact, there are a variety of ways to listen, just as there are a variety of ways to say something. Human beings are complex and concealing. Often we don't say what we want to say, or say exactly the opposite of what we want to say. Sometimes, we aren't honest or direct with another because we think we don't have the right or are afraid of what will happen if we are. The body "talks", too, sometimes more honestly than the tongue. These different ways of talking need different ways of listening. To keep the seesaw going in conversations and in relationships, we need to understand and use these different ways, especially if our goal is to be a caring, thoughtful person. By knowing how to listen in various ways, you can be accurate in picking up messages no matter how they are masked or distorted变形了的 or how they are delivered. Some messages are heard just by listening silently; some, by holding a hand or giving a hug拥抱. But to be able to respond accurately, you need to hear accurately. Most people listen only with their ears. Too few listen with their hearts as well as their ears, listening to the other's, sharing of his or her hopes, joys, fears.26. According to the passage, listening only with ears may happen to us when ______.A we are emotionally tiredB we are physically disabledC we are so interested in the topicD we are asked many questions27. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about a good listenerA He can feel what the speaker thinks.B He can share the speaker's feeling.C He can remember what the speaker says.D He can listen with his heart.28. The purpose in writing the second paragraph is to ______.A demonstrate why we are not honest in communicationB explain how our body “talks”C illustrate ways used by people in speakingD show that understanding one's speech is not an easy job29. The word "seesaw" Line 1, Para. 3 probably means ______.A communicationB purposeC understandingD friendship30. According to the passage our failure to give proper response to thespeaker is probably because ______.A we misunderstand what he saysB we don't like the speakerC he speaks in a distorted wayD he speaks in a different languageQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Passage FourSuperstition 迷信 is a difficult question. We cannot quite say that superstition in Britain is dead. Its history is too long and too recent for that, and indeed you will find many remains of it in modem Britain. But they are only connected chiefly with vague beliefs of good luck and bad luck. It is unlucky, for instance, to walk under a ladder, or to spill salt, or break a mirror, or to have anything to do with number 13; whereas a horseshoe brings good luck, and people jokingly "touch wood" to prevent the return of a past misfortune. There are still many strange country remedies against sickness which are obviously superstitions. Most of all, there is still a surprising amount of interest in fortune-telling, e.g. in the form of "horoscopes" 占星术in newspapers and women's magazines-though for most people this is nothing more than an amusement, which they may well be slightly ashamed of.But the real measure of superstition is fear. In this sense there is no superstition in Britain. British people as a whole do not believe in evil influences or evil spirits. Sickness and misfortune do not come from devils, but are the result of chance or foolishness or inefficiency. Devils belong only to history books. Devils exist only in the mind -- usually the minds of others. Magic is simply an interesting word for performing tricks.Fairies童话故事中的仙女 are pretty little winged creatures in "fairy stories" for children and any adult who believed in fairies or magic or devils would be considered slightly mad. Thus, modern Britain has largely emerged from superstition, and the future seems to consist not of devils, but of matter and machines.31. The author's purpose in writing this passage is to ______.A criticize British people's superstitious beliefsB show British people's attitudes towards superstitious beliefs todayC describe various superstitious beliefs still practiced in modern BritainD emphasize the influence of superstition upon the British people32. According to the remaining superstitious beliefs in Britain, all thefollowing are concerned with bad luck except ______.A break a mirrorB walk under a ladderC touch woodD pour salt out33. 三、学位英语作文必备范文WeatherWeather affects all of us in one way or another, directly or indirectly. For example, good weather makes people happy and gay, while bad weather makes people sick and depressed. Besides, on a fine day, one can get out for a walk or play a game in the open air. On a rainy day, however, he can only stay indoors. In a word, weather is part of life for all of us.The first thing that many people do after getting up in the morning is to see what the weather is like. With a knowledge of the weather, people can arrange work and life of the day. If it is fine, he may decide to go on a picnic. If it is cloudy, he will have to take a raincoat or an umbrella with him when he is leaving the house. Whatever the weather may be, one tends to adjust his activities to it accordingly. In order to know what the weather will be, special people are hired to provide this information. They collect data, analyze them and provide the weather of the coming day. This information, which is announced on the radio or on TV, is usually very accurate. Thanks to the efforts of those professionals, we can always know the weather in advance and get prepared for it.2Health or WealthI prefer health to wealth if I have to choose between them. It is true that wealth makes life easier and more comfortable, but health is even more important. Only when one has good health can he pursue wealth and happiness.Wealth cannot be acquired without health. As we know, to gain wealth usually means working hard. If one does not have a strong body, how can he work hard? How can he have enough energy to overcome all the difficulties on his way towards success? Only with a sound body may one get a chance to enjoy the better life provided by his wealth because health ensure wealth but not vice versa. Therefore, health is the basis for attaining wealth.Even if one is born into a rich family, wealth alone cannot make him happy. Imagine a rich man who can do nothing but stay in bed. How can he enjoy his life? What can his money do for him? So long as one is healthy, there are always chances for him to attain everything including wealth.3Directions: For this part, you need to write a short passage with a title Spring Festival in not less than 100 words. Thousands of years ago, Chinese people started to count days according to the changes of moon and in this way thus created a lunar calendar. Spring Festival is considered to be the first day in Chinese lunar calendar. It is an occasion for all the members of the family to gather together to celebrate the festival. Because it is the most important festival and people take the longest leave in the whole year, it becomes a proper time for family members who live far away from each other to take the opportunity to reunite.Besides, it is the time of the year at which relatives and friends exchange visits. Most of the people are busy with their work or other daily chores and seldom have time to pay visits to their friends and relatives. The long leave during Spring Festival provides them with good chance to visit each other and share their experiences of the year.4Directions: For this part, you need to write a short passage with a title Travel in not less than 100 words. Urban residents enjoy good housing, medical care, convenient transport and lots of cultural activities. Children living in cities can get better education, because almost all the famous universities are located in the cities. However, there are also many disadvantages if one lives in a city. For example, cities are usually polluted and noisy. Urban residents can hardly enjoy fresh air and birds’ singing as rural people do in the countryside. In conclusion, if a person tries to decide whether to live in a city or not, he should take into consideration both the advantages and disadvantages of urban life before he makes the final decision.7One ―Child FamilyIn China one-child family has many advantages. China has a large population. In order to control the growth of population and improve the living standard of the people, the government requires that every family have one child. Most people take a positive attitude towards the one-child policy. They realize that a family with one child is better than those with more children. Parents have much time show concern about the growth of their child. In addition, they can spend more time on their studies and work. But there are some negative views about the one-child family. Some people argue that it may lead to some social problems in future. For example, the parents will feel lonely when their child gets married. Moreover, parents tend to spoil their only child. In my opinion, one-child family has a lot of advantages. It benefits people as well as the country. Besides, it is of great importance to the development of our country.8HobbiesAlmost everyone has a hobby. Hobbies can bring us happiness and entertainment. By keeping a hobby, one can, for a while, switch away from one’s hard work or study and be refreshed for a new start.Different people have different hobbies. Many people in the world enjoy music. They listen to records, sing karaoke, and play musical instruments for fun in their free hours. Millions of people take great pleasure in doing physical activities, such as running, swimming, bowling, playing ball, and so forth. A lot of people also like to collect stamps or other items. As for me, I like stamp collecting. Getting a new stamp added to my collection always makes me excited for a long time. Every single stamp seems to be a beautiful flower, a story and a good friend. Whenever I open my stamp-album and look at the stamps, I feel I am immersed in happy reveries.9Why Should a Person Go to SchoolA person needs to learn both knowledge and moral principles in order to be useful and upright. By studying at school he acquires many abilities such as how to write and speak properly, or how to solve math problems. One also learns to distinguish right from wrong. In this way, it is very important for a person to go to school. As we all can see, going to school is the best way for people to acquire what he needs.10A Teacher’s ResponsibilityIt is a teacher’s major responsibility to impart knowledge to students. A teacher is a medium that connects students to higher knowledge. He should teach what he knows to his students.Besides, a teacher should teach the students to be upright. He ought to set up a good example for the students as an honest, kind and responsible person and tell the students what to do or not to do.A teacher should also be willing to help students solve various problems. Young people may meet many problems on their way to become adults. When this happens, they may come to their teachers for help. In this case, teachers are responsible to give necessary assistance.11Is Money EverythingMoney is a necessary means to get material goods. No matter it is food, clothes or furniture, each of them costs money. You can get none of them for free. But there are things that money can not buy. Not all the things in the world can be evaluated and estimated by money. You can not acquire things like love, happiness and friendship merely with money. So we may conclude that money is not everything. It is useful to get many things you need or you like. You can survive without it. But when it comes to feelings and emotions, it loses its magic power as to material things.12Laid-off Workers and Re-employment(下岗工人与再就业)There is an increasing number of workers not only the middle-aged but also the young who are laid off their jobs. And these employed are also worried a great deal that someday they may lose their job. This phenomenon has caught a great social attention. The increasing number of laid-off workers is caused mainly by the industrial restructuring and economic development across China. In order to improve efficiency, many enterprises have to reduce workforce. Another reason is that some enterprises claim bankruptcy, which made millions of workers jobless. Laborers from countries are also contributing to the increasing numbers of the laid-offs.Off-job doesn’t men no job. There are plenty of opportunities for the laid-off workers to be re-employed. But they have to get job training to make themselves qualified and competitive inhuman resources market.13Why Should We Learn EnglishEnglish language has now become an international language as it is spoken in most countries in the world. For example, English is the native language in the U.S., the Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. and it is also the official language in many other countries and international affaires. As we know, most of the valuable books, newspaper and magazines are printed in English. If we want to read them to increase our knowledge, we must learn English. If we want to do business with foreign countries, we should also learn English. Why? It is just because English is spoken by the majority of foreigners. We people in China come into contact with more and more foreign countries, English is considered as the most important and indispensable tool to communication. This is the reason why there are so many people in our country who learn English. The know that learning English helps make life more convenient.14Smoking CigarettesSmoking is a common phenomenon. People have smoked cigarettes for a long time. The tobacco which is used to make cigarettes was first grown in what is now part of the United States. Christopher Columbus, who discovered America, saw the Indians smoking. Soon the dried leaves were transported to Europe where smoking began to catch on. In the late 1800s, the Turk made cigarettes popular. However, it does more harm than good. Cigarette smoke contains at least two harmful substances, tar and nicotine. Tar, which forms as the tobacco burns, damages the lungs and therefore affects breathing. Nicotine, which is found in the leaves, causes the heart to beat faster and increases the breathing rate.Smoking cigarettes is dangerous. Therefore, efforts should be made to restrict smoking. The U.S. Public Health Service stated that cigarette smoking is the cause of lung cancer and several other deadly diseases. The U.S. government now requires that each package of cigarettes bear a special warning about the dangers of smoking.15Is Failure a Bad ThingFailure is a common thing in our daily life. As a student, we sometimes fail to get high scores in our examinations. When we play games, we can’t avoid being beaten by the others. And there are times when we fail to do more satisfactory work. All these failures happen naturally and almost every one of us has such experience. However, there are different attitudes towards failure. Some people lose heart in failure, and they think the world is at its end. Some people don’t take failure seriously, and they just let it be, while some others learn much from failure, and therefore see the light of hope through failure. In my opinion, what really counts is not failure itself, but what we think of failure and do after failure. As long as we don’t give up and believe in oursel ves, and in the meantime learn some thing from failure, we’ll certainly make progress in the end. So I’m never afraid of failure. I believe failure is not a bad thing.16The Way to SuccessIt is true that everyone tries to achieve success in his/her career. But one finally attains his/her aim while the other fails. Why? Because the one continues his cause to the end through long period of hard struggles. But the other is easily disappointed and stops halfway. In addition to strong will, perseverance and diligence are also essential to success. A man of strong will and perseverance always has an inflexible spirit. He sticks to his cause no matter how tough it might be. If we want to succeed finally in our career, we should hold to our goal.Where there is a will, there is a way. Success belongs to those who can suffer long years of patient toil and constant efforts.以上范文仅供大家参考,,如果有时间或挤时间,多背一些范文是非常有益的。
