The Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park was _s_e_t _u_p_ in Jilin and Heilongjiang, with _b_o_u_n_d_a_r_ie_s_ stretching all the way to the border and joining with Russia’s wildlife reserves. This _v_a_s_t_ new park is nearly four times larger than the old wildlife park protecting Siberian tigers in Northeast China. Over the years, increased development in the area affected the tigers’ habitat, and it was thought that by 1998 there were only six to nine wild Siberian tigers living in the _r_e_m_o_t_e_ region. However, a __b_an__ on development put in place in 2015 resulted in a _v_i_si_b_le__ population increase of the species, and now the area is thought to have about 35 tigers and 70 leopards.
