Earthquakes are natural disasters that can cause serious damage and loss of life. I have experienced several earthquakes in my life, and each time it is a scary and unforgettable experience. One of the most memorable earthquakes I experienced was in 2010, when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. I was living in the United States at the time, but I remember feeling the tremors from the earthquake. The news coverage of the devastation in Haiti was heartbreaking, and it made me realize how important it is to be prepared for earthquakes. In order to prepare for earthquakes, it is important to have an emergency plan in place. This includes knowing what to do during an earthquake, such as dropping to the ground, taking cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and holdingon until the shaking stops. It is also important to have an emergency kit with food, water, and other supplies in case of a prolonged power outage or other emergency situation.Another important aspect of earthquake preparedness is building codes. In areas prone to earthquakes, buildings must be constructed to withstand the shaking and ground movement that can occur during an earthquake. This can include reinforced concrete and steel construction, as well as other measures to ensure the safety of occupants.

Earthquakes are natural disasters that can cause widespread destruction and loss of life. I have personally experienced a few earthquakes in my lifetime, and each time it is a terrifying and humbling experience. One of the most memorable earthquakes I experienced was the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan. I was living in Tokyoat the time, and the earthquake was so strong that it caused the entire city to shake. The ground felt like waves, and I could see buildings swaying back and forth. It was a surreal experience, and I remember feeling completely helpless and scared.Earthquakes can have devastating consequences, as we have seen in recent years with earthquakes in Haiti, Nepal, and Mexico. The destruction caused by these earthquakes is heartbreaking, and it reminds us of the power of nature. However, it is important to remember that earthquakes are a natural part of the earth's geological processes. While we cannot prevent earthquakes from happening, we can take steps to prepare for them and minimize their impact. This includes building earthquake-resistant structures, creating emergency plans, and educating people on what todo in the event of an earthquake.

The family has set up camp in my brother’s house. I live just next door, but it makes us feel better to be all in the same house. My brother, a novelist, is writing his articles; I am writing mine. From time to time a tremor will make us pause and run back outside, just in case, to be safe. I wonder how long we will have to be so cautious, and I long for normalcy.

We sleep. We listen to the radio. We exchange information. Mostly, we have been trying to stay alive and sane since that Tuesday afternoon a week ago when the earthquake changed our lives forever. It doesn’t help that the earth continues to convulse. Just this morning, we felt another tremor, the most violent since the earthquake itself. Doctors and search dogs, troops and rescue teams flew to this devastated land of dazed, dead and dying people Thursday, finding bottlenecks everywhere, beginning at a main airport short on jet fuel and ramp space and without a control tower. The international Red Cross estimated 45,000 to 50,000 people were killed in Tuesday's cataclysmic earthquake, based on information from the Haitian Red Cross and government officials. Worries mounted, meanwhile, about food and water for the survivors."No one knows with precision, no one can confirm a figure. Our organization thinks between 45,000 and 50,000 people have died."We also think there are 3 million people affected throughout the country, either injured or homeless," Victor Jackson, an assistant national coordinator with Haiti's Red Cross said.Earlier, Haitian President Rene Preval said 30,000 to 50,000 people could have died but did not say where the estimates came from.Meanwhile, a United Nations spokeswoman said in Geneva yesterday that up to 200 international UN staff in Haiti, including peacekeepers, remain unaccounted for after its headquarters and other buildings collapsed in the earthquake.Between 50 and 100 peacekeeping staff are believed trapped in the building. "In total, between 115 and 200 are unaccounted for, but it is an estimate from last night," Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told Reuters. The quake brought down Port-au-Prince's gleaming white National Palace and other government buildings, disabling much of the national leadership. That vacuum was evident Thursday."Donations are coming in to the airport here, but there is not yet a system to get it in," said Kate Conradt, a spokeswoman for the Save the Children aid group. "It's necessary to create a structure to stock and distribute supplies," the Brazilian military said.。

Another small aftershock hit this morning in that county as the officials there say their top worries now are untreated injuries as we've discussed over the past couple of days and the potential outbreak of disease because of living conditions for everybody in the wake of that quake.
Unsanitary conditions in camps housing thousands of survivors could promote further outbreaks of diarrhea and other disease and infections that could make otherwise non-life threatening injuries life threatening.
Meantime, a small glimmer of hope from Netherlands where mercy flight carrying 106 patient children landed earlier today.
The flights are moved to speed up the adoption of these children who had already been matched to new Dutch parents before the quake.
On the state of untreated and otherwise non- life threatening disease that could further deviate, what can be done to intervene on that behalf and what can be done for that extraordinarily homeless population?
We’ve all done in an incredible first aid effort we have h which include both field hospitals that have surgical units and all the type of war time technology.
We also have mobile health clinics staff with doctors both around the world and Haiti doctors.
There are a lot of hospitals in Haiti that collapsed and doctors who were in those hospitals are now volunteering with the Red Cross in one capacity or another. Some of them are hiking up into the hills with a street first aid team to find the injured people.
The hospitals are overcrowded.
So now 9, 10 days after this earthquake, they're sitting in their homes with fastening infections.
The bandages have crossed over and are stuck to the wound.
They could become septic and die. And so that is our first priority.
We pulled these bandages back every so carefully, moistening them with just regularly drinking water cause we don't even have enough peroxide to take care of this kind of thing and the massive level that's need it.
And we clean them with antibiotics. We hand them out some pills to take for antibiotic treatment afterwards. And some of these patients receive it on a daily basis. We take care of the wounds every day. In our country they will be in hospitals getting special iced wound care.
That’s not even available in some small hospitals where I live. And here we're taking caring of them, under trees, out in parks, and in open air first aid clinics. So really it's the priority of our work.
If you look at the next level of need, as you anticipate the next couple of weeks, what is it that most concerns you?
Besides the heath situation of regular citizens, we're trying to reach all over this very large area that's been infected.
We're really trying to help them in that effort, giving them blankets, and water and kitchen sets. So they can start getting back to some kind of a respectable living condition, even if that's on the streets.
