Carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by 34,000 tons in the last nine months of 2011because the plant used less natural gas and electricity and because the methane gas emissions from the landfill were captured.BMW is on target to eliminate annually the equivalent of emissions from more than 60,000 cars . “ We think we are on target for about 55,000 tons ,as long as we operate this ,”said DuncanSeaman,BMW facilities and energy manager. In addition to reducing emissions ,BMW saves about $1milion a year in energy costs . “The reality of the project has definitely exceeded our expectations,”Seman said . The methane gas generated by the decaying waste is shipped about 10 miles to the plant from the landfill. The energy is used in various processes including the plant shop ,assembly lines and body lines , and to heat and cool the facility.Other officials are taking notice, too. “I had an international engineer come by my office the other day and tell me the BMW Palmetto project had raised the awareness of landfill gas to energy all over the world ,” said Sonny Dubose , program manager for the state Office of Energy . The original expectation was the gas would allow the plant to run tow of its four turbines full time. “The reality has been very good quality landfill gas ,”Seaman said . “ The equipment has run very well . We have had very high availability . We’ve been able to operate –more than we expected –all four turbines ,except for maintenance.”72.The carbon dioxide emissions of BMW reduction was mainly due to_______.A. the elimination of the emissions from more than 60,000 carsB.the use of natural gas rather than coalC.the decline in the use of natural gas and eletricityD.the methan in the landfill raises the efficiency of the energy73. According to the third paragragh ,which of the following is true?A. The company can produce 60,000 cars every yearB.55,000 tons of methane gas emissions will be eliminatedC.60,000 cars will be fueled by methane gasD.The project has achieved the original goal of BMW Company.74. According to what Sonny Dubose said, we can infer that _____.A. landfill gas may be used all over the world in the futureB. the gas allows the plant to run two of its four turbines full timeC. maintaining the four turbines saves lots of energyD. the original expectation is unreasonable75. Which of the following expresses the main idea of the passage?A. Carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by use of landfill gas.B. BMW turns landfill gas into electricity.C. BMW’s proj ect always has exceeded expectations.D. There’ll be a world-wide project to turn landfill gas into electricity.Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.A. Insurance makes up for almost any kind of loss.B. Savings are the best way to protest against financial losses.C. Insurance companies in the U.S..D. Insurance can provide protection against financial losses.E. Financial loss is inevitable.F. Many share few people’s losses.76.Each minute of the day or night, everyone faces a possible financial loss. A home may be destroyed by fire, damaged by lightning, or leveled by a tornado. Personal belongings may be stolen. A car may be damaged in an accident, or it may cause injury to people and property. Income may be lost as the result of the death, disability, or unemployment of a family wage earner. The chance that a loss of this kind may occur is called an economic risk.77.Savings provide one way to take care of financial losses. But savings are not the answer to large losses. The best way to guard against large financial losses is through insurance. The purpose of insurance is to provide protection against financial loss at a reasonable cost. This is possible only when the cost of insurance is shared by many people who face a similar risk. But not all of them are likely to have actual losses at the same time.78.Almost 4,800 companies in the United States are in the business of providing insurance protection. These businesses are called insurance companies. Because most insurance companies operate on a big scale, they provide a way for large numbers of people to share their losses.79.The premiums(保险金) paid by all policyholders are used to pay those who have losses. In this way, a loss that might result in great financial hardship for one person or household is shared by many people.80.Insurance can provide protection against almost any kind of loss. Singers may insure their voices. Photographers may insure their negatives. The owner of a home freezer may insure against food loss in case of power failure. A business owner can insure his or her place of business. A business owner can also insure against a loss of profits during a shutdown following a fire or damaging accident. However, the kinds of insurance protection that most people buy can be divided into three broad groups: property and liability insurance, life insurance, and health insurance.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. When aluminum was first produced about a hundred and fifty years ago, it was so difficult to separate from the ores in which it was found that its price was higher than that of gold. The price remained high until a new process was discovered for refining the metal with the aid of electricit y approximately three quarters of a century later. The new method was so such cheaper that alu minum became practical for many purposes, one of the first which was making pots and pans.Aluminum is lightweight, rustproof and easily shaped into different forms. By mixing it with o ther metals, scientists have been able to produce a variety of alloys, some of which have the stre ngth of steel but weigh only one third as much.Today, the uses of aluminum are innumerable. Perhaps its most important use is in transport ation.Aluminum is found in the engines of automobiles, in the hulls of boats. It is also used in man y parts of airplanes. In fact, the huge "airbus" planes would probably never have been produced if aluminum did not exist. By making vehicles lighter in weight aluminum has greatly reduced the a mount of fuel needed to move them. Aluminum is also being used extensively in the building ind ustry in some countries.Since aluminum is such a versatile (多用的) metal, it is fortunate that bauxite(铝土矿), which is one of its chief sources, is also one of the earth’s most plentiful substances. As the source of aluminum is almost inexhaustible, we can expect that more and more uses will be foun d for this versatile metal.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS) 81.
