a.How do you feel about the elderly taking part in the activity in the picture?I am of the opinion that this is a meaningful and useful activity for the elderly. There are several reasons. Firstly, this activity gives the elderly a chance tocontinue to socialise with others. Many elderly are left on their own for one reason or others resulting in them leading a lonely life. This, in turn, can lead to depression and other physical and psychological problems. This group activity not only allows them to have fun but also a chance to talk to others about themselves, their family and even their problems.Secondly, activities like the above are good for the mental wellbeing of the elderly. Researchers have discovered that ‘mahjong’ and card games keep the minds of the elderly active and flexible to stave off diseases like dementia, and delay the loss of the mental faculty of the elderly. Finally, indoor games like the above are the most appropriate activities to get the elderly to lead an active life. I am inclined to think that the elderly shyaway from a normal active life thinking that their life is ‘over’ because they are no longer physically fit. Activities like the above are not physically taxing and can be done easily by the elderly. In addition, there is this element ofcompetition in the above activity – the chance of winning. Nothing spurssomeone to life more than the idea of winning. To conclude, the above is perhaps the perfect activity for the elderly if they want to have a happy, active and meaningful time every day. This coupled with some more active and physical activities like walks and calisthenics will ensure that they have a more interesting, exciting and healthy life in theirtwilight years.b.What kind of activities would appeal to the elderly in your community? From my observation, there are several activities the elderly in my community find appealing. The first type is those 3-generation activities. They can be an oversea tour, or a day/night tour to some places of interest in Singapore, or a familysports/games day. A plausible explanation for their popularity among theelderly is that these activities allow them time to do something active and to do it with their children and grandchildren. It is a great time for family bonding and to do something interesting as an extended family unit.Next, the elderly find activities with food as its central idea appealing. This can be a cooking course or a cooking competition. Cooking courses are always oversubscribed at the community club. They are probably popular with the elderly because they are usually the ones who cook the family meals and want to add to the recipes that they already have. Perhaps, also, theseelderly want to debunk the misconception that old dogs cannot learn new tricks. Similarly, one can see many senior citizens taking part in cookingcompetitions. Contrary to popular opinion that the elderly are inactive and uninterested in life, these competing senior citizens are, perhaps, out to show that there is a winner left in each of them. What better way to show that than in a cooking competition! Finally, less physically demanding physical activities like mass walk, ‘taichi’ and line dance are very popular with the elderly. To begin with, theseactivities offer them a chance to do something physical to improve theirphysical fitness. Secondly, they are carried out with many participants givingthem the opportunity to bond with old friends, make new friends and lead an active social life. More importantly, these activities are either free of charge or the participants are charged a nominal fee, making them affordable to the elderly. To conclude, more such and other activities should be conducted atcommunity level. There are as many activities as there are elderly. While the majority’s interest is taken care of, the minority should not be neglected. No elderly should be deprived of a more active life.c.Some people say, “Life is what you make it to be and should not depend onyour age.” Do you agree?I fully subscribe to that idea. There is no right or perfect age for achievingcertain success. The conventional assumptions are that we should besuccessful students in our young age, successful career people and parents in our middle age, and docile and contented grandparents in our old age. These views are so outdated.[first example] Throughout history and even present time, there are many child prodigies. Beethoven composed his first symphony when he was eight. In2007, Tian Boedihardjo, at the age of nine, was admitted to the University of Hong Kong. These are not rare cases. A check of Wikipedia will throw upthousands of names of prodigies who have achieved immense success way beyond their age. And, these are just the children.[second example] Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of FaceBook, became a billionaire before he turned 25. Again, he is not the only young man or woman who is successful in life way beyond his or her right time. There are many self-made billionaires and millionaires who have earned their first billion or million dollars before they turn 30 when in the past we only heard of people earning their first billion or million only when they reached middle age.[third example] In the media, we hear of senior citizens embarking on degree courses at the university. This reminds me of a case in the United Kingdomwhere a woman was conferred her degree at the ripe old age of 91. She did not begin her university course until she turned 88. In Singapore, as well asother parts of the world, working people - many are teachers - in their 40’sand 50’s are going back to school and earning their first degree or post-graduate degree. Many embark on their second career and achieveimmense success late or later in life.To conclude, age does not determine a person’s success. It is the person’sdesire, determination and dogged hard work that decide.Note: the conversation starters are below.Conversation StartersWords/phrases associated with opinions or attitude on a topica.I am of the opinion that/I am of the view thatb.I think/My opinion is thatc.I feel that/I agree with/I concur with your view thatd.I tend to agree/concur with… /I tend to think thate.Probably… Quite possibly, …they could have…perhapsf. It is likely thatg. It is possible/It is quite plausible/probable thath. Most certainly, most assuredlyi. It may be the case that…j.The _________ (person) looks as if he…k.It seems/appears that the ___________(person) is…/it seems thatl. It seems obvious to me that …m.Obviously/Apparently …n.Interestingly/Surprising/Significantly/Admittedly/Predictably/UnderstandablyWords/phrases associated with negative feelings/attitudea.It does not appeal to meb.I don’t go with the idea that…c.That’s not an acceptable action…d.It bothers me to see… to think thate.We/I frown on/do not condone such behaviourf.I think it is distasteful/impolite/discourteous to…g.I think that’s an utterly inconsiderate/irresponsible act to do…h.It is rather inconsiderate/irresponsible of him/her/them to…i.That’s an undesirable behaviour…/socially unacceptable behaviourj. It is unthinkable/inconceivable that…Words/phrases to express feelingsa. It pains/saddens me to see the…b.I am absolutely enraged by…c.I am rather annoyed withd.I sympathise with the old woman…e.I am absolutely appalled by such disgusting behaviourf.Seems to be/Feels ashamed/embarrassed/uncomfortable/looksguilty/sheepish, looks shocked/alarmed/panicky/startled/takenaback/nervous/anxious/worriedg.Joyous/delighted/pleasantly surprised/cheerful (avoid happy or sad) Words/phrases to elaborate, explain and illustratea. For instance/for example/take for exampleb.Let me illustrate/Let me show you what I meanc.Regarding the…/With regard to…d.What I mean to say is that…e.I recall one occasion when…f.It is evident that…g.Supporters of this view focus primarily on …Words/phrases to change to a new topica. This reminds me of another incident…b.This brings to mind an incident which is quite similar to this…c.I can think of something/another incident quite similar to this one…d.I recall another time/occasion when…e.Take for example another occasion/a similar incident…f.Another way of looking at this is…Different ways of expressing tentative commentsa.Probably, possibly, perhapsb. Do you agree? [stand] I definitely agree.[reiterates stand] Our childhood only happens once.[elaboration] If we miss it, we will not be able to turn back the clock [explaining] Actually, the idea of enjoying one’s childhood would have been taken for granted decades ago when children were allowed a great deal of time to simply play whether it is alone, with friends, indoors with their toys or outdoors. Today, I think society has changed so drastically that many people forget what it means to have an enjoyable childhood.[explain by example 1] Whether it is tuition classes, enrichment lessons such as violin, piano, dance or swimming classes, children are constantly kept busy not because they are playing but because they are attending one class after another. Tuition classes are probably a bane in a child’s life.Having to sit down for an hour, listen to the teacher and do an endless number of worksheets will most certainly be uninteresting and tedious for the children. If they spend their childhood stuck in one class after another, they would lose the freedom of being able to play and do the things they enjoy. Even with enrichment classes, the students are expected to engage in regular practices.[example 2] Even if the class such as a dance class or an art class will no longer be enjoyable. It may even become a chore. Children are expected to excel once they attend a class.[opposing view] Some parents may beg to differ and would say that the classes are for their children’s enjoyment but I disagree. For example, many children, if given the freedom to draw just because he feels like drawing and not because he has to attend a class, will certainly enjoy drawing better.[conclusion] To conclude, to be able to enjoy one’s childhood is to be able to have fun doing whatever one wants, as long as it is safe of course.Elderly:1.What other jobs are available for older workers in your community?2.What is your opinion of the elderly man cycling in the picture?3.In what ways can the elderly benefit from knowing how to use thecomputer?4.What types of skills would older adults want to pick up?5.It is difficult for younger adults to teach the elderly.
