Antonio: My dear friend, I haven’t seen you for a long time. Would you like to talk to me about the lady you admired?Bassanio: You know, Antonio, how much I have devalued mine estate by somewhat showing a more swelling port than my inadequate means would allow maintenance. Nor do I now complain to be deprived from such a high style of living, but my chief concern is to repay fairly of the great debts. In my young age something too excessive has left me pledged. To you,Antonio, I owe the most in money and in love. And from your love I have an authorization to reveal all my plots and purposes. How to get a clear of all the debts I owe?Antonio: I pray yougood Bassanio, let me know it.And if the plan stands as you yourself still do, honorable, be assured my purse, my person, my extremest means, lie all unlocked to your needs.Devil: Please, Antonio! You are a merchant, you can’t do the business with such a guy who breaks his words! If you follow his suggestion, you will absolutely lose the money! Do not follow him!Bassanio: In my schooldays, when I had lost one arrow, I shot another one of the same type the selfsame way with more careful watch to findthe other out, and by adventuring I often found both. I bring forward this childhood proof because what follows is pure innocence. I owe you much and, like a wilful youth, that which I owe is lost. But if you please to shoot another arrow that same way which you did shoot the first, I do not doubt, as I will watch the aim, either to find both, or bring your latter hazard back again, and thankfully remain debtor for the first.Angel: Come on! Antonio. He is your friend. You should lend him money. Remember you are a merchant, brave enough to take a risk. You never know what will happen in the future. Perhaps he will succeed. Antonio: You know me well, and you just waste time to ingratiate yourself by speaking in an elaborate, roundabout way, and without doubt you do me now more wrong in questioning my offer of all the help I can give than if you had wasted of all I have. Then do only say to me what Ishould do that in your knowledge may by me be done, and I am enlisted unto it: therefore speak.Bassanio: In Belmont there is a lady with a large inheritance, and she is fair and, fairer than that word, of wondrous virtues. At one time from her eyes I did receive fair speechless messages. Her name is Portia, worth no less than Cato’s daughter, Brutus’Portia. Nor is the wide world ignorant of her worth, for the four winds blow in from every coast renowned suitors, and her sunny locks hang on her temples like a golden fleece, which makes her rural estate of Belmont Colcho s’strand, andmany Jasons come in quest of her. Oh my Antonio, as long as I have the means to hold a rival place with one of them, I have a mind that predicts me such advantage that I should be fortunate without question. Devil: Gosh! You stupid angel. What advantage can you take from him? You forget the fact thathe haven’t returned the money back to you? Now do not think too much. Money is the most important thing.Angel: No, Antonio! You should listen to me! Some day you will regret if you follow the devil! If you help him at this very moment, I swear he will thank you with unexpected fortune.Antonio: You know that all my fortunes are at sea, neither have I money, nor goods to raise an immediate sum: therefore go forth. Find out what my credit can do in Venice, that shall be stretched, even to the uttermost, to equip you to go to Belmont, to fair Portia. Go to inquire at once, and so will I, where money is, and I no question make to have it on my credit as a merchant or for my friendship’s sake.Portia: by my marriage, Nerissa, my little body is tired of this great world.Nerissa:You would be,my friend, if your miseries were in the same abundance as your good fortunes are, and yet, for anything I see, they are sick that surfeit with too much,as they that starve with nothing; it is no small happiness, therefore , to be seated in the middle. Superfluity comes sooner by white hairs, butcompentency lives longer.Portia: Good sentence and well pronounce.Nerissa:They would be better if well followed.Portia: if to do were as easy as to know what were good to do, chapels had been churches and poor men’s cottages, prices’ palaces. It is wisdom that follows his own instructions; i can easier teach twenty what were good to be done than be one of the twenty to follow mine own teaching,. The brain may carry out laws for the blood ,but a a hot temporature leaps over a cold teaching-----such a hare is madness youth, to skip over the meshes of good counsel the cripple; but this reason is not in fashion to choose whom i would, nor refuse whom i dislike , so is the will of a living daughter curbed by the will of a dead father. Is it not hard, Nerissa, that i can neither choose one nor refuse none.Nerrisa:Your father was ever virtuous, and holy men at their death have good inspirations.Whoever chooses his meaning chooses you, will no doubt never be chosen by any rightly but one who you shall rightly love.Do you remember, Portia, in your father’s name, a Venetian, a scholar and a soldier, that came hither in company of the Marquis of Italian?Portia: Yes, yes, it was Bassanio, as I think, so was he called.Nerrisa:Ture, darling. He, of all the men that ever my inexperienced eyes looked upon, was the best deserving a fair lady.Portia: I remember him well, and I remember him worthy of that praise.。
