Break out, break inTHE “crime of the century” has been committed (实施) in Paris!Four men tunneled (挖地道) into the vaults (金库) of a Paris bank and got away with over 22 million pounds (229 million yuan) of cash and jewelry. They started by digging in a neighboring cellar (地窖) before using flamethrowers (火焰喷射器) and pickaxes (镐) to break through the 31 inch (79cm) walls to the vaults. The vaults were closed for refurbishment (装修), so once inside they had “a leisurely time breaking open the de posit boxes,” police said. The police are now on the hunt for the criminals. What they'll do for scienceFOR most people, a day at the office does not include collecting dung (粪便) or cutting open whales, but for some scientists, boring and often strange tasks are just part of the daily work.Popular Science wrote about some of these unusual jobs in its 10 Worst Jobs in Science list for its April issue. The list seeks to “show how brave you have to be to really do real science,” says editor Jacob Ward. Here are the 10 worst jobs in science:Armpit (腋窝) detective: Researchers at Florida International University study human odors, mainly from the underarm, to try to understand our unique smell.Feces (排泄物) piper (管道工): Some hospitals perform “fecal transplants,” which involve feeding fecal matter through a tube (管道) from a healthy person into a person infected with certain bacteria to fight the bacteria.Sneeze modeler: Most people turn away when they hear a sneeze, but University of California-Berkeley researc her Mark Nicas studies where on a person’s face spit (唾液) lands when someone coughs or sneezes. He hopes to find the areas of the body most vulnerable to be attacked by the flu virus.Dung collector: Jim Mead and his team at Northern Arizona University host the largest collection of dung in the world, which they collect from archaeological digs, zoos and parks to study DNA, plant matter in the dung, and climate information.Doomsday fact-checker: Since the release of the movie 2012, which is the year the world is supposed to end, archaeologists such as Anthony Aveni of Colgate University have been responding to hundreds of e-mails from “sleepless teenagers” to tell them that the pop-cultural story is false.Ocean diver: Scientists from Italy’s Polytechnic Un iversity of Marche go diving in the Adriatic Sea to collect dead plankton (浮游生物) for their research. The plankton smells of seafood and spoiled eggs.Tissue collector: Tissue technologists recycle body parts of the dead at hospitals and funeral homes, removing skin for skin transplants and arm and leg bones, which could be used to fill holes in bones during operations.Dance observer: Peter Lovatt at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK observes people dancing and onlookers’ reactions, to discover the social motivations behind dancing.Bean counter: Purdue University scientist Andrew Robinson and his research team counted beans of 10 plants from each of the 72 plots (小块土地) of soybeans they planted, to study which months are most productive to plant soybeans.Whale cutter: Michelle Berman of Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and his team cut open the whales and dolphins that wash up on shore to study what killed them. Researchers often have to stand knee-deep in blood and cut through fatty whale oils, which can stick to the hair and skin.Listen to my stressDear Editor,My mom thinks that I have nothing to worry about. I am 17 years old and I feel like I have a lot to worry about, such as friends, grades, school, even my own parents! Every time I try to tell her that I have stress too, she doesn’t seem to care or believe me. It’s unfair, what can I do?Susan, via e-mail Dear Susan,It’s a pity that you have a difference with your mom at the moment. But don’t worry, keep in mind th at all moms care about and love their children.Think of the reasons why your mom doesn’t seem to believe you. Maybe you haven’t spent much time doing what you should have done. Did you come home late after playing with your friends? Did you spend a lot of time listening to MP3s instead of doing your homework? If you do have stress, the best way to deal with it is by talking with your mom when she is in a good mood. Tell her what your worries are. Ask her advice and she will be glad to help you.If you talk with your mom calmly and honestly, she will hopefully understand you.EditorGrowing into his roleIT took only three scenes in Twilight and 30 pounds (14kg) of muscle in New Moon to make Taylor Lautner the object of every Twi-hard’s obsession (着迷).It c an’t be denied (否认) that the focus of Twilight is the relationship between a teenage human Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and a vampire (吸血鬼) Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). However, young viewers recently voted 18-year-old Lautner their favorite actor. He and Stewart also won the “cutest couple” award for their roles in the show at Kids Choice Awards.Lautner stars as the werewolf (狼人), Jacob Black, who is Bella’s best friend but has a crush (爱恋) on her.Jacob plays a small part in the first film. While Stewart and Pattinson were already set for the sequel (续集), New Moon, Lautner had to earn his role. However, it was never easy. In the book Jacob rapidly grows tall and muscular (肌肉发达的) as he becomes a werewolf. So, the only way Lautner was going to reprise (续演) his role in New Moon was to change.“Jacob transforms a lot in New Moon, not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. So it was a matter of getting into the gym and eating the right foods and also reading and studying the book and my char acter,” Lautner said.To bulk up (变强健), Lautner spent five days a week in the gym. But the hard part was consuming more than 3,200 calories a day, which meant “putting something in my mouth every two hours.”The time spent shaping his physique (体形) paid off. When filming started in the Vancouver spring, Lautner spent most of the sequel shirtless, despite the Canadian cold.New Moon has also transformed Lautner into an overnight star.Girls everywhere are crazily typing, “I love him sooooo much!” and “His smile makes me melt!” on Internet fan sites. He’s featured in just about every teen magazine on the stands.Lautner’s dad Dan, a commercial airline pilot, says that as Taylor’s star rises he is going to watch to make sure his son keeps himself grounded.“We want him to do normal things,” Dan says. “We kept him in public school as long as we could, so he could be with his peers (同龄人). We give him responsibilities at home – chores he has to do. He gets an allotted (定额的) allowance (零用钱) and he has to budget it.” We've budgeted for a new car next year.。

2. 通过报刊阅读,提高英语思辨能力ssp的头版文章通常是外国主编写的文章,针对国内当前的一些事情写得评论性文章,例如,get help before it’s too late 学生压力过大自杀现象,beautiful scenes at ugly prices 节日风景区乱收费现象,gaokao shortcut?

有大量的与新事物相关的词汇,如3G Cell Phones, A(H1N1)等;现代汉语中出现的新词汇,如the two-day offs(双休日);job-hop(跳槽)等。

大部分学生都选取了how to protect your consumer rights这篇文章。

Each country has its own restrictions on business practices;however, most fraud(欺诈行为)is prevented when consumers know their rights,do their research and report illegal activities when they happen. It is important to be a knowlegeable buyer and exercise your rights. The passage will show you how to protect your consumer rights.Do your research before making any large or important purchase.By looking at various products, reviews and price ranges, you can protect yourself from scams(骗局),Invest in an online or print magazine like Consumer Reports, which will Provide you with more information about the products that you intend to buy.Get a second opinion on large or risky purchase. In the case of a personal purchase, consult a trusted friend or family member.Ask about product warranties(保单).A warranty is a written guarantee that the seller or manufacturer will repair or replace a product if it breaks down within a certain amount of time.If a product comes with a warranty of one year or more, consider it an advantage of purchasing the product from that seller.Remember torequest a receipt for purchases. It is usually required to return faulty products or submit a complaint against a business.Keep track of other documents, such as contracts and manuals.Avoid giving your personal information online. One of the best way to protect you consumer rights is to be knowledgeable about online scamming techniques, which grow more advanced every day.Do not give your credit card number or email address out unless you know you are using a trusted site. Read and submit a warranty after purchase. It is important to observer the care instruction of a product. Some warranties will be voided(废弃的)if you misuse the products. For example, many phone companies no longer offer a warranty if their phone was dropped into water because it is seen as the consumer’s carelessness.(二)Activity2 对确定的话题――如何保护自身的消费权利进行集体讨论。

Compared with people who ra ted themselves as unhappy, people who were happiest spent 70 percent more time talking, had one-third as much small talk and twice as many deep conversations.Researchers came to their conclusions by having a group of 79 college students wear a tape recorder for four days. They eavesdropped (偷听) on their conversations. The students were also given tests to measure happiness and personality. The findings suggest that “the happy life is social rather than solitary (孤独的), and conversationally deep rather than superficial (肤浅的),” the authors, from the University of Arizona and Washington University in St. Louis, wrote. It’s not clear, however, whether happy people attract others for deep conversations or whether deep conversations make people happier. TAKING a walk in this city, you can relax in the peaceful Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and have your photograph taken in front of the huge replica (复制品) of a West Han Dynasty Bell. When you get hungry, you can choose from a variety of Chinese restaurants with cooking ranging from Sichuan pickles (泡菜) to Cantonese dim sum (广式点心).You are not in China: Where could you possibly be then?Welcome to Vancouver, the host city of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Vancouver is home to North America’s second biggest Chinatown, after San Francisco’s in the US.Chinese is the largest minority ethnic group (少数族裔) of the city. “In some Vancouver schools, more than 90 percent of the students are Chinese; bilingual (双语的) signs are now widespread; Chinese-language newspapers can be found in hotels and shopping centers,” describes Clyde H. Farnsworth, a reporter with The New York Times.Chinese immigrants (移民) have helped Vancouver to develop into a multi-cultural city. However, according to Canada’s CBC news, there are ethnic tensions (关系紧张) in the city. There has been “a widespread perception (观念) that Chinese immigrants…[are] driving up property (房地产) prices, competing for jobs and services, and rapidly altering (改变) established neighborhoods”.The magazine Vancouver has published an article, titled Look What They’ve Done to My Neighborhood. The author regrets that modest, old houses surrounded by gardens and trees have been replaced by Chinese immigrants’ “monster houses” –pretentious (炫耀的) mansions with all sorts of extra bathrooms, recreation rooms and exercise rooms. In spite of the tension, just about everyone agrees that the economic effect of the Chinese immigrants and the investment they have brought have been positive.“The heavy Chinese immigration is one reason why Vancouver outperforms (超过) the rest of the country,” Professor Don J. DeVoretz, an immigration economist at Simon Fraser University told the New York Times. “It has created jobs.”They'll never take me alive!
