They are designed to express theplayful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends.Beijing officially started to select the mascots in August 2004. A range of animals and cartoon figures participated in the fierce competition. The lucky five won over other candidates such as the Chinese dragon and the Monkey King, which had been favorites along the way.“I’ve always been confident in the whole process, because I’m the most precious animal in China. That means I got lots of votes,” said the panda, when Teens interviewed him.He was right. Named “Jingjing”, he was chosen because he makes children smile and brings the blessing of happiness wherever he goes. He was chosen to sho w China’s desire to protect nature.Unlike the well-known panda, the Tibetan antelope is considered much more sporty than other chosen animals.“I can run 70-100 km pre hour at a high altitude where the oxygen level is just half that of the plains. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing the Great American Desert in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon. The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and on TV.In Arizona, man made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country. At Lake Powell, the red stone arch of Rainbow Bridge rises high above the blue lake. There are few roads. Many areas of Lake Powell’s shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures, painted on the rocks. In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130 degrees. There is less than two inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America—925 meters below sea level. In the 1800s, many travelers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Small insects, snakes and rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live under ground and come out at night, when it is cool. Plants such as cacti need very little water. When it dose rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with brilliant colors.59 In the 19th century, Americans moved from the east to the west because they _________.A. enjoy the tripB. wanted to make their home thereC. wanted to find new grassland thereD. had no water to drink60. From the passage, we can conclude that _________.A. the western desert is a good place for people to live inB. there is little water but there are many trees in the desertC. the desert is dangerous but it is full of lifeD. till now, people know little about the desert61. After that he visited Hong Kong and then returned to Taiwan on September 30.At a conference organized by Hong Kong—based Phoenix Satellite Television, Li said he hoped the trip would promoted(增进)cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Straits.Li was born in the city of Harbin in Northeast China and grew up in Beijing. At the age of 14, he moved with his family to Shanghai and from there to Taiwan in 1949.He is well-known by mainland intellectuals(知识分子)for his satire(讽刺文学),sharp commentaries and criticism. He is also ho nored as a loyal supporter of China’s reunification(重新统一), and he believes that the sooner reunification comes, the more beneficial(有益)it will be for Taiwan.Beijing No. 4 Middle School, where Li once studied, gave him his student card as a gift. Famous writer arrived in mainland.B. Li Ao, a famous writer.C. Li Ao’s speech to the college students.D. A peaceful trip to mainland.ENervous suspects(嫌疑犯)locked up in Britain’s newest police station may feel relieved by a pleasant yellow color on the door. If they are close to confessing a crime, the blue on the wall might tip the balance.Gwent Police have abandoned colors such as grays and browns of the 20th-century police cell(牢房)and have used color psychology to decorate them.Ystrad Mynach station, which recently opened at a cost of £5 million, has four cells with glass doors for prisoners who suffer from claustrophobia(幽闭恐怖症). Designers have painted the frames yellow, which researchers say is a calming color. Other cells contain a royal blue line because psychologists believe that the color is likely to encourage truthfulness. The station has 31 cells, including 12 with a “live scan” system for drunken or disturbed prisoners, which detects the rise and fall of their chest. An alarmalerts officers if a prisoner’s breathing stops and carries on ringing until the door is opened.Designers and psychologists have worked for years on color. Blue is said to suggest trust, efficiency, duty, logic, coolness, thinking and calm. It also suggests coldness and unfriendliness. It is thought that strong blue will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft colors will calm the mind and aid concentration.Yellow is linked with confidence, self-respect and friendliness. Get the color wrong and it could cause fear, depression and anxiety, but the right yellow can lift spirits and self-respect.Ingrid Collins, a psychologist who specializes in the effects of color, said that color was an “energy force”. She said, “Blue does enhance communication but I am not sure it would enhance truthful communication.”Yellow, she said, affected the mind. Red, on theother hand, should never be considered because it could increase aggression. Mrs. Collins praised the designers for using colors in the cells. Gwent is not the first British force to experiment with color to calm down or persuade prisoners to co-operate. In the 1990s Strathclyde Police used pink in cells based on research carried out by the US Navy.67. The expression “tip the balance” in paragraph 1 probably indicates that the blue might______.A. let suspects keep their balanceB. help suspects to confess their crimesC. make suspects cold and unfriendly in law courtD. enable suspects to change their attitudes to colors68. Which of the following colors should NOT be used in cells according to the passage? ______A. PinkB. YellowC. BlueD. Red69. Which of the following helps alter officers ifsomeone stops breathing? ______A. Scanning equipmentB. royal blue linesC. Glass doorsD. Yellow frames70. The passage is mainly concerned with ________.A. the relationship between colors and psychologyB. a comparison of different functions of colorsC. the use of colors in cells to affect criminals’ psychologyD. scientific ways to help criminals reform themselves in prison四.对话填空(每题1分,共10分)根据上下文对话语境和所给单词首字母,补全所缺单词。
