曾任教安徽工业大学的麦克带领该校一名选手在2008年CCTV杯全国英语演讲大赛中进入中央电视台演播大厅并出人意料地获得第12名。
2009年他受聘厦大并负责该校英语演讲集训队，带领一名非英语专业选手进入CCTV杯全国英语演讲大赛全国半决赛。
2010年，他指导两位选手创造了福建省大学生参加该项赛事史上最佳战绩（胡骏：第2名；张蕾：第21名，此前省内最好成绩为全国第10名），并获得外研社颁发的“教练特殊贡献奖”，还获邀前往英国牛津大学曼斯菲尔德学院参加ESU国际关系会议。

3．第三阶段：英语演讲。
（1）初赛。
定题演讲：围绕某一主题进行事先准备好的演讲，规定时间为3分钟，选手自定题目。
之后回答评委提出的1-2个问题，时间约为1分钟。

为进一步活跃厦门大学本科生英语兴趣，提高本科生英语水平和综合素质，增强我校校园英语文化氛围，培养本科生思辨能力与文化沟通能力，学校将举办2011年“厦门大学本科生首届英语写作与演讲竞赛”。
此次竞赛由学校教务处主办，外文学院承办。
有关竞赛事宜通知如下：
一、竞赛内容：
1.第一阶段：英语写作。
参赛学生在45分钟内写一篇250-300词的英文写作。
该比赛分专业组和非专业组。
2. 第二阶段：名篇背诵。
参赛学生根据原文内涵，声情并茂地背诵一篇英文短文，规定时间2分钟内。
该比赛分专业组和非专业组。
3．第三阶段：英语演讲。
（1）初赛。

由竞赛“英语朗诵专家组”对入围选手分赛场进行选拔。
专家组按50%的比例选拔选手入围参加第三阶段的英语演讲比赛。
3.2012年3月在漳州校区举行英语演讲初赛。
由竞赛“英语演讲专家组”对参加半决赛的选手分赛场进行选拔。
专家组选出非专业组20名选手和专业组4名选手入围演讲决赛。
4. 2012年4月在漳州校区举行英语演讲决赛，非专业组20名选手和专业组的4名选手进入英语演讲决赛，由评委专家选出“厦门大学首届英语写作与演讲大赛”一、二、三等获奖。
5. 进入英语演讲决赛选手、校本部本科高年级学生选拔入围外研社杯校内选拔赛的选手，共同参加学校参加外研社杯校内选拔赛。
四、奖项设置
