2014年杭州电子科技大学外国语学院801英汉互译考研真题及详解(试题共二大题,共2页,总分150分)一、第一题:英译汉(本题共75分)Anyone with a passion for hanging labels on people or things should have little difficulty in recognizing that all apt tag for our time is the Unkempt Generation. I am not referring solely to college kids. The sloppiness virus has spread to all sectors of society People go to all sorts of trouble and expense to look uncombed, unshaved, unpressed. The symbol of the times is blue jeans—not just blue jeans in good condition but jeans that are flayed, torn, discolored. They don’t get that way naturally. No one wants blue jeans that are crisply clean or spanking new. Manufacturers recognize a big market when they see it And they compete with one another to offer jeans that are made to look as though they’re just been discarded by clumsy house painters after ten years of wear The more faded and seemingly ancient the garment, the higher the cost. Disheveled is in fashion; neatness is obsolete.Nothing is wrong with comfortable clothing. It’s just that current usage is more reflective of a slavish conformity than a desire for ease. No generation has strained harder than ours to affect a casual, relaxed, cool look; none has succeeded more spectacularly in looking as though it had been stamped out by cookie cutters. The attempt to avoid any appearance of being well groomed or even neat has aquality of desperation about it and suggests a calculated and phony deprivation. We shun conventionality, but we put on a uniform to do it. An appearance of alienation is the triumphant goal, to be pursued in oversize sweaters and muddy sneakers.Slovenly speech comes off the same spool. Vocabulary, like blue jeans, is being drained of color and distinction. A complete sentence in everyday speech is as rare as a man’s tie in the swank Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel. People communicate in chopped-up phrases, relying on grunts and chants of “you know”or “I mean”to cover up a damnable incoherence Neatness should be no less important in language than it is in dress. But spew and sprawl are taking over. The English language is one of the greatest sources of wealth in the world. In the midst of accessible riches, we are linguistic paupers.Violence in language has become almost as casual as the possession of handguns. The curious notion has taken hold that emphasis in communication is impossible without the incessant use of four-letter words. Some screenwriters openly admit that they are careful not to turn in scripts that are devoid of foul language lest the classification office impose the curse of a (general) rating. Motion-picture exhibitors have a strong preference for the R(Restricted) rating, probably on the theory of forbidden fruit. Hence writers and producers have every incentive to employ tasteless language and gory scenes.

It is perhaps unprecedented for it to do so by siding, in a contentious issue of global financial governance, with the superpower’s emerging rival, China. Yet that, in effect, is how America seems to interpret Britain’s plans, announced on March 12th, to join China’s new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as a founding shareholder. China, naturally, is chuffed. Most other observers are confused. The AIIB is one of a number of new institutions launched by China, apparently in frustration at the failure of the existing international financial order to adapt quickly enough to accommodate its astonishing rise. Efforts to reform the International Monetary Fund are stalled in the United States Congress. America retains its tradition grip in the management of the World Bank. The AsianDevelopment Bank remains based in Manila, but it is mostly run by Japanese bureaucrats. So, it is perhaps understandable that China, flush with the world’s biggest foreign-exchange reserves and anxious to convert them into “soft power”, is building an alternative system. Its plans do not just include the AIIB, but also a New De velopment Bank launched with its “BRICS” partners—Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa—and a Silk Road development fund to boost “connectivity” with its neighbors. And, in the security sphere, there is the Shanghai Co-operation Organization that links it with Russia and Central Asia.America, however, has reacted negatively to the AIIB. Its officials argue that they have not “lobbied against” it. Instead they merely stressed how important it is that such an institution abide by international standards—of transparency, creditworthiness, environmental sustainability, and so on. But officials in Singapore, for example, a close partner to both America and China, say they had some difficult discussions with America when they decided to support China’s initiativ e.【参考译文】英国在外交政策上采取与其最亲近、最重要的盟友美国不同的立场,这是十分罕见的。

2018年杭州电子科技大学外国语学院801英汉互译考研真题及详解一、英译汉(本大题共1小题,每小题75分,本大题共75分)Several years ago I returned to Washington, D.C., and visited one of my old neighborhoods. I had been on Nash Street for more than twenty years and as I walked along the street, my mind was flooded by waves of nostalgia.I saw the old apartment building where I had lived and the playground where I had played. As I viewed these once familiar surroundings, images of myself as a child there came to mind. However, what I saw and what I remembered were not the same. I sadly realized that the best memories are those left undisturbed. As I remember my old apartment building, it was bright and alive. When I was a child, the apartment building was more than just a place to live in. It was a medieval castle, a pirate’s den, a space station, or whatever my young mind could imagine. I would steal away with my friends and play in the basement. This was always exciting because it was so cool and dark, and there were so many things there to hide among. Our favorite place to play was the coal bin. We would always use it as our rocket ship because the coal chute could be used as an escape hatch out of the basement into “outer space”. All of my memories were not confined to the apartment building; however, I have memories of many adventures outside of the building, also. My mother restricted how far we could go from the apartmentbuilding, but this placed no restrictions on our exploring instinct. There was a small branch in back of the building where my friends and I would play. We enjoyed it there because honeysuckles (金银花) grew there. We would go there to lie in the shade and suck the sweet smelling honeysuckles. This is how I remembered the old neighborhood; however, as I said, this is not how it was when I saw it. Unlike before, the apartment building was now rundown and in disrepair. What was once more than a place to live looked hardly worth living in. The court was dirty and broken up, and the windows in the building were all broken out.The once clean walls were covered with graffiti and other stains. There were no medieval knights or pirates running around the place now, nor spacemen insisted, there were a few tough looking adolescents who looked much older than their ages. The once sweet smelling area now smelled horrible. The stench from my once idyllic haven was heart wrenching.I do not regret having seen my old neighborhood. However, I do not think my innocent childhood memories will ever be the same. I suppose it is true when they say, “You can never go home again.”【参考译文】几年前我回到了华盛顿,重访我的一处故居。

John was a well-set man about five-and-twenty;Sarah a brown woman of eighteen. John had for several months borne the labor of the day in the same field with Sarah; when she milked,it was his morning and evening charge to bring the cows to her pail.Their love was the talk, but not the scandal of the neighborhood;for all they aimed at was the blameless possession of each other in marriage. It was but this very morning that he obtained her parents’consent, and it was but till the next week that they were to wait to be happy.Perhaps this very day,in the intervals of their work, they were talking of their wedding clothes;and John was now matching several kinds of poppies and field flowers to her complexion,to make her a present of knots for the day. While they were thus employed(it was on the last day of July,)a terrible storm of thunder and lightning arose, that drove the laborers to what shelter the trees or hedges afforded. Sarah, frightened and out ofbreath, sunk on a haycock, and John(who neverseparated from her)sat by her side, haying raked two or three heaps together to secure her.Immediately there was heard so loud a crack as if heaven had burst asunder. The laborers, all solicitous for each other’s safety, called to one another: those who were nearest our lovers, hearing no answer, stepped to the place where they lay. They first saw a little smoke, and after, this faithful pair;John with one arm about Sarah’s neck, and the other held over her face,as if to screen her from the lightning. They were struck dead, and already grown stiff and cold in this tender posture. There was no mark or discoloring on their bodies, only that Sarah’s eyebrow was a little singed, and a small spot between her breasts. They were buried next day in one grave,in the parish of Stanton Harcourt; where my Lord Harcourt,at my request, has erected a monument over them.【参考译文】我想在信纸空余的地方写一写我亲眼见到的一件事情,这件事给我留下很深的印象。

Part I.Translate the following terms and passages into Chinese(60points).A1.setting2.plot3.point of view4.flat character5.dramatic monologue6.black humor7.tragicomedy8.expressionism9.lost generation10.stream of consciousnessBThe speciality of the novel is that the writer can talk about his characters as well as through them,or can arrange for us to listen when they talk to themselves. He has access to self-communings,and from that level he can descend even deeper and peer into the subconscious.A man does not talk to himself quite truly—not even to himself;the happiness or misery that he secretly feels proceeds from causes that he cannot quite explain, because as soon as he raises them to the levelof the explicable they lose their native quality. The novelist has a real pull here.He can show the subconscious short-circuiting straight into action(the dramatist can do this too);he can also show it in its relation to soliloquy. He commands all the secret life, and he must not be robbed of his privilege.C...There the meadows are all lawns with the lustrous green of spring even in August, and often over-shadowed by old,fruit-trees—cherry,or apple,or pear;and on Sunday after the rain there was an April glory and freshness added to the quiet of the later summer.Nowhere and never in the world can there have been a deeper peace;and the bells from the little red church down by the river seemed to be the music of it,as the song of birds is the music of spring. There one saw how beautiful the life of man can be,and how men by the innocent labors of many generations can give to the earth a beauty it has never known in its wildness. And all this peace, one knew, was threatened;and the threat came into one's mind as if it were a soundless message from over the great eastward plain;and with it the beauty seemed unsubstantial and strange,as if it were sinking away into the past,as if it were only a memory of childhood.D“His pride,”said Miss Lucas,“does not offend me so much as pride often does, because there is an excuse for it.One cannot wonder that so very fine ayoung man, with family, fortune, everything in his favor, should think highly of himself. If I may so express it,he has a right to be proud.”“That is very true,”replied Elizabeth,“and I could easily forgive his pride,if he had not mortified mine.”“Pride,”observed Mary, who piqued herself upon the solidity of her reflections,“is a very common failing I believe.By all that I have ever read,I am convinced that it is very common indeed, that human nature is particularly prone to it,and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary.Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously.A person may be proud without being vain.Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.”Part II.Translate the following passages into English(40points).

That ban has not been rigorously or consistently enforced, however. Beijing plans by the end of the year to announce national rules that could either formally legalise the growing car-hailing industry or strangle it.People in the industry point out that even if the draft regulationsare adopted, there still would be ample room for municipal regulators to issue detailed local policies that could affect their implementation. Some of the rules are as strict as those on the heavily regulated traditional taxi industry, and thus could prove costly if rigorously enforced nationwide, they said.【参考译文】北京方面把目光投向中国的“共享经济”,发布法规草案,拟对私人叫车服务实行类似于出租车的限制,此举可能推高互联网打车应用领先者优步和滴滴快的的成本。
