DuskGuo Moruo While my three kids accompanied by myself, were frolicking about on the meadow behind my house, the sky above the distant edge of the sea was aglow with the setting sun and the crescent new moon was already peeping out from behind the scarlet clouds. A few cows grazing on the pasture let out a long drawn-out moo now and then as if urging their master to lead them home as quickly as possible. Our two mother hens and their baby chicks were scurrying homeward one after another from the grave yard of the nearby monastery. The kids’ mother, standing by the kitchen door, sprinkled a handful of rice onto the sandy ground in the open. At the clucking of the hens, the chicks scrambled for the feed, chirping. “We’ve done quite well this year, with ten chicks growing fast,”beamed my wife. The joyous sound wave drifted through the golden evening mist.

1. The ignorant old woman who ruled for the entire last half of the nineteenth century did more than any other single person to hold back China’s progress. Without her the progressive Emperor Kuangshu would certainly have gone on with his reforms. To the end, the Emperor, like an eagle deprived of its wings, remained submissive to his aunt. Ignorance added to a strong character was a double curse; stupidity joining hands with stubbornness was twice stupid.

In the daytime, however,it was all prosaic. The five or six peaks forming the front row were about the same height. The westernmost one had on top a cluster of houses while the rest were topped by nothing but trees. The highest one in the middle had on it a large piece of barren land, like the scar on a favus-infected human head. Now,as usual, the morning fog had shut out everything completely, including the not-too-distant wire poles. The five or six peaks forming the front row2,“中间最大的一峰”中表位置的“中间“可以后置译为The highest one in the middle3,“濯濯”指山坡上光秃秃的样子,译为barren land4,“癞子头”是指黄廯感染的头,译为favus-infected human head4,文中出现多次表示“遮盖”的词,译者根据不同语境,分别用了veil,shut out, shroud, obliterate作同义替换,记得总结哦综述:本段重点依旧在于多重定语的翻译,表位置和状态的定语可以后置译为状语~渐渐地太阳光从浓雾中钻出来了。

PeanutsXu Dishan Behind our house there lay half a mou of vacant land. Mother said, “it’s a pity to let it lie waste. Since you all like to eat peanuts so very much, why not plant some here?” that exhilarated us children and our servant girls as well, and soon we started buying seeds, ploughing the land and watering the plants. We gathered in a good harvest just after a couple of months! Mother said, “How about giving a party this evening to celebrate the harvest and inviting your Daddy to have a taste of our newly-harvested peanuts?” We all agreed. Mother made quite a few varieties of goodies out of the peanuts, and told us that the party would be held in the thatched pavilion on the peanut plot. It looked like rain that evening, yet, to our great joy, father came nevertheless. “Do you like peanuts?” asked father. “Yes, we do!” we vied in giving the answer. “Which of you could name the good things in peanuts?” “Peanuts taste good,” said my elder sister. “Peanuts produce edible oil,” said my elder brother. “Peanuts are so cheap,” said I, “that anyone can afford to eat them. Peanuts are everyone’s favourite. That’s why we call peanuts good.” “It’s true that peanuts have many uses,” said father, “but they’re most beloved in one respect. Unlike nice-looking apples, peaches and pomegranates, which hang their fruit on branches and win people’s admiration with their brilliant colours, tiny little peanuts bury themselves underground and remain unearthed until they’re ripe. When you come upon a peanut plant lying curled up on the ground, you can never immediately tell whether or not it bear any nuts until you touch them.” “That’s true,” we said in unison. Mother also nodded. “So you must take after peanuts,” father continued, “because they’re useful though not great and nice- looking.” “Then you mean one should be useful rather than great andnice-looking,” I said. “That’s what I expect of you,” father concluded. We kept chatting until the party broke up late at night. Today, though nothing is left of the goodies made of peanuts, father’s words remain engraved in my mind.

It is a pleasure to stand upon the shore and to see ships tossed upon the sea; a pleasure to stand in the window of a castle and to see a battle and the adventures thereof blow; but no pleasure is comparable to the standing upon the vantage-ground of truth(a hill not to be comman-ded, and where the air is always dear and serene) and to see the errors and wanderings andmists and tempests in the vale below.
There in the mist, enormous, majestic, silent, and terrible, stood the Great Wall of China, Solitarily, with the indifference of nature herself, it crept up the mountain side and slipped down to the depth of the velley, Menacingly, the grim watch towers, stark and foursquare, at due intervals stood at their posts. Ruthlessly, for it was built at the cost of a million lives and each one of those great great stones has been stained with the bloody tears of the captive and the outcast, it forged its dark way through a sea of rugged mountains. Fearlessly, it went on its endless journey, league upon league to the furthermost regions of Asia, in utter solitude, mysterious like the great empire it guarded. There in the mist, enormous, majustic, silent, and terrible, stood the Great Wall of China.
The water of the Qinhuai River looked dark green but not greasy. Could t be that it was mingled with the gold and rouge of the Six Dynasties? When we went aboard it was just dark, and the ripples looked so quiet and mild that we felt the vast space between heaven and earth and imagined the luxurious and dissipated life of those days. When the lanterns were lit, the sky looked darker, and the dim water seemed to be a dream, the occasionally glittering ripples and eyes of the dream. We sat on the foredeck; because of the visionary effect of the highly upwards and we were riding the wind and scaring up to the skies. The boats lying leisurely at anchor here and there and the figures shifting about looked as if they were far away in a world below, and the blurred view also seemed like watching flowers through fog. Then we passed the Lishe Bridge, and the Eastern Gate came in sight. Now and then all along the way we heard songs, some wafted to our ears from the brothels along the banks and the others from boats on the river. We knew for sure that lyrics were hackneyed words mechanically produced by dry throats, but when they were wafted to our ears by the mid-summer breeze over the ripples, they were no longer merely sung by the girls, for the singing blended with the whispers of the breeze and water. We were perforce provoked, shaken and quite carried away by the songs. Soon after making a turn at the Eastern Gate we arrived at the Dazhong Bridge. The three wide arches of the bridge looked like three big gates, and we felt that we were very paltry when our boat was passing through. The bricks of the bridge were dark brown, a sign of their long history; the bridge was intact, which arouse our admiration for the wonders of ancient architecture. It was dreadfully cold, it was snowing fast, and almost dark; the evening----the last evening of the old year was drawing in. But, cold and dark as it was, a poor little girl, with bare head and feet, was still wandering about the streets. When she left her home she had slippers on, but they were much too large for her; indeed, properly, they belonged to her mother, and had dropped off her feet whilst1 she was running very fast across the road, to get out of the way of two carriages. One of the slippers was not to be found, the other had been snatched up by a little boy, who ran off with it thinking it might serve him as a doll's cradle.
