other by helping us overcome barriers caused by time and space. There are various ways in which mass media make daily life easier for us.First, they inform and help us keep a watch on our world. They gather and pass on information we would be unlikely or unable to get on our own.Second, mass media help us to arrange our time and life. What we talk about and what we think about are greatly influenced by the media. When people get together, they tend to talk about certain happenings in the newspapers or on TV.Because we are exposed to different points of view through different kinds of media every day,we are able to evaluate all sides of a certain issue.Third, the media are used to persuade people.A goodeedia.Newspapers, magazines and TV are filled with all kinds of colourful, persuasive advertisements.Though many advertisements may not say openly that they want you to buy a certain product, they describe their products in such a way that you may want to buy them.Fourth, the media also entertain. All of the media make some efforts to entertain their audience. For instance, even though the newspaper is primarily a medium of information,it also contains entertainment features.Television, motion pictures, fiction books and some radio stations and magazines are devoted mainly to entertainment. It is estimated that in the future, the entertainmentfunction of mass media will become even more important than it is now.1.This passage mainly tells us .A.something about the functions of mass mediaB.something about the development of mass mediaC.how mass media entertain usD.the types of mass media2.According to the passage, what are mass media?A.Tools for advertisements which persuade people to buy things.B.Tools for entertainments which make daily life easier.C.Tools for communication which record and pass information to people.D.Tools for education which help improve people’s knowledge.3.How many ways that mass media help make daily life easier are mentioned in this passage?A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Five.4.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.From mass media,we know what is happening in the world.B.Sometimes we arrange our time and life according to mass media.C.Mass media’s main purpose is to pass the information of advertising.D.Mass media can make people feel easy.BNo one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialisation, which means that people would specialise,or focus,on doing one specific job.Let’s take a man we’ll call Mr Fielder, for example. He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time,he did many other jobs on the farm. However,he didn’t make the bricks for his house, cut his trees into boards, make the plows(犁铧),or any ofother hundreds of things a farm needs.Instead,he got them from people who specialised in doing each of those things.Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr ing what he knew about farming and working with iron,Mr Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier.Mr Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialise in making really good plows.Perhaps,he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows. How did Mr Plowright let people know what he was doing? Why,he advertised,of course.First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door.It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr Plowright and his really good plows. Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago.Even before most people could read, they understood such signs.Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay,or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.A medium,in advertising talk,is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio,or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use ittoday.Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people’s attention.A crier,in the historical sense,is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city.In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products.Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods.Perhaps the crier described the goods,ee from, and praised their quality. His job was,in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today’s world.5.What probably led to the start of advertisement?A.The discovery of iron.B.The development of farming techniques.C.The appearance of new jobs.D.The specialisation of labour.6.The writer makes up the two stories of Mr Fielder and Mr Plowright in order to .A.explain the origin of advertisingB.predict the future of advertisingC.provide suggestions for advertisingD.es in advertising7.In ancient Egypt,a crier was probably someone who .A.had the loudest voiceB.took possession of a shipC.functioned like today’s TV or radio commercialD.ran a shop selling goods to farmers8.The last two paragraphs are mainly about .A.the basic design of advertisingB.the early forms of advertisingC.the benefits of advertisingD.the history of advertising五、七选五阅读理解Social media is so common in our society that almost everyone is connected to some form of it.We are a He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watchi ng. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the ch eek and tell me to be a good boy. Lux ury consumption in China now extends ways beyond well-known car, clothing and jewelry brands. For example, the luxu ry jet market in China is the fastest-growing in the world, even outstripping that of the United Stat es, with a market share of 25 percent. This trend appears to c ontinue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, com pared with only 2 to 3 percent in the US. But more importantly , China's luxury jet market growth represents a major development in the private consumption of luxury items.China's high-quality red wine market also provides evidence of the growth i n private consumption of luxury goods. In 2013, China becam e the largest market for red wine in the world, even overtaking France, with 1.86 billion bottles consumed in China last year. Over the past five years, China's red wine consumption has gr own 136 percent.According to my ongoing consumer research in this area whil e working at the University of International Business and Econ omics in Beijing, public consumption of such expensive global luxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to “gain face” and publicly display social climbin g through material possessions. On the other hand, it is “self -reward” that lies behind consumer motivation in this area. Chi nese consumers who have experienced rapid financial and ec onomic gains appear to be in particular need of rewarding the mselves for their success. But this has little to do with “gaining face” and impressing others and much more to do with the ne ed for personal satisfaction. Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is s et to continue in part due to the maturity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally .What do you think the author would most probably be?A. A news reporter.B. A salesman.C. A professor.D. A conductor.8. The underlined word “outstripping” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.A. falling far behind ofB. going out ofC. going far ahead ofD.keeping pace with9 . What can be the best title for the passage?A. Future Private Luxury Consumption in ChinaB. Chinese Appetite for Luxury Goods and ServicesC. The Potential Luxury Jet Market in ChinaD. The Maturity of the Chinese ConsumersDDoes stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tensio n and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact, it is an old-wives’ tale that being upset all the time can result in prematur e graying. Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives’ tale could be true.As one ages, the hairs on the head also age. In fact, just abou t everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear (磨损) after a while. The joints wear and become stiff and skin w ears and becomes wrinkled. Hairs on the head grow and even tually die. They are replaced, but in the process something els e happens. When new hairs are replacing the old ones, the color or pigm ent (色素) is also added to them. However, as one ages, this pigmen t becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a li mited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be whi te. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an e arly age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some peopl e begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty.Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body. It is a known fact that stressful times can ca use one to suffer hair loss. It would make sense that if it can c ause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to grayin g. However, there is no sound evidence to support this.On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that th ere may be a link between graying and a constant state of an xiety or tension. Does stress cause gray hair? There is no sci entific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid str essful situations. The underlined phrase in the first paragraph most probably m eans________.A. clever remarksB. silly remarksC.exciting remarksD. disappointed remarks11.The second paragraph mainly tells us __________.A. every part of body is replaced with ageB. hairs will grow weak but not dieC. skin becomes wrinkled with ageD. every part of body ages with age12. What might play the most important role in the graying pro cess?A. Genetics and the amount of sleeping time.B. The amount of food people eat and living environment.C. The amount of pigment and genetics.D. Genetics and the amount of water people drinkEThe Taj Mahal , in Agra, India, is one of the most brilliant structures on Earth. It is nearly 400 years old. Emperor Shah Jaha n had it built in memory of his wife. It took about 20 years to b uild the monument. Some 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephant s helped the job done. Today, the Taj Mahal is not just a sym bol of cultural history. It’s also India’s most famous tourist attr action. About 8 million people visit it each year. But pollution is turning the white marble monument shades of green, yellow, and brown. The Taj Mahal stands on the pollut ed Yamuna River. Insects are attracted to the dirty water. The y leave greenish droppings on the building. Air pollution is als o a big threat. Factories and cars release pollution into the air. From tim e to time, workers clean the Taj Mahal. But doing so is difficult , expensive, and time-consuming. And it doesn’t prevent the discoration. On July 11, I ndia’s Supreme Court gave the city of Agra a war ning. “Either you destroy the Taj Mahal or you restore it”. Auth orities in the city submitted a draft of an action plan on July 24 . It suggests banning plastics and construction from the area. CWhat Cocktail Parties Teach UsYou’re at a party. Music is playing. Glasses are clinking. Dozens of conversations are driving up the decibel (分贝) level. Yet among all those distractions, you can tune your attention to just one voice from many. This ability is what researchers call the “cocktail-party effect.”Scientists at the University of California in San Francisco have found where that sound-editing process occurs in the brain—in the auditory cortex (听觉皮层) just behind the ear, not in areas of higher thought. The auditory cortex boosts some sounds and turns down others so that when the signal reaches the higher brain, “it’s as if only one person was speaking alone,” says investigator Edward Chang. These findings, published in the journal Nature last week, explain why people aren’t very good at multitasking-our brains are wired for “selective attention” and can focus o n only one thing at a time. That inborn ability has helped humans survive in a world buzzing with visual and auditory stimulation (刺激). But we keep trying to push the limit with multitasking, sometimes with tragic consequences. Drivers talking on cellphones, for example, are four times as likely to get into traffic accidents as those who aren’t.Many of those accidents are due to “inattentional blindness”, in which people can, in effect, turn a blind eye to things they aren’t focusing on. The more attention a task demands, the less attention we can pay to other things in our field of vision. Images land on our retinas (视网膜) and are either boosted or played down in the visual cortex before being passed to the brain, just as the auditory cortex filters sounds, as shown in the Nature study last week. “It’s a push-pull relationship-the more we focus on one thing, the less we can focus on others,” says Diane M. Beck, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Illinois.Studies over the past decade a t the University of Utah show’ that drivers talking on hands-free cellphones are just as influenced as those on hands-held phones because it is the conversation, not the device that is distracting their attention. Those talking on any kind ofcellphone react more slowly and miss more traffic signals than other motorists. Some people can train themselves to pay extra attention to things that are important — like police officers learn to scan crowds for faces and conductors can listen for individual instruments within the orchestra as a whole. Many more think they can effectively multitask, but are actually shifting their attention rapidly between two things and not getting the full effect of either, experts say.43. What have scientists in University of Cali fornia found about “the cocktail-party effect”?A. Usually there is only one person who is speaking alone.B. All kinds of annoying sounds drive up the decibel level.C. The higher brain processes sounds and images selectively.D. Sounds are sorted out before reaching the higher brain,44. What do we learn from the passage?A. We are biologically incapable of multitasking.B. We survive distractions in life by multitasking,C. We cannot multitask without extra attention.D. We benefit from pushing the limit with multitasking.45. Which of the following is an example of “inattentional blindness”?A. A careless driver lost his eyesight after a car accident.B. Police scanned the crowds and located the criminal.C. A manager talked on a hands-free phone with his client,D. A pedestrian had a car accident because of phubbing.46.
