So, it’s important for us to explore the family problems that American middle-class women have been facing so as to know American society better. Marriage is major element for people in life and marriage values also show the individual opinion. However, marriage is influenced deeply by different cultures and backgrounds. For the past few years, with the development of the society, people’s ideas are persistently changing, which leads us to face a challenge of opinion of marriage. Particularly, we have observed people who in American literary works pursue freedom and perfect marriage. But in modern American productions, we see all kinds of marriage.Everyone wants to have a perfect marriage, and they desire to be more stronger and wealth as well. When it comes to marriage, it’s a matter that we should how to deal with today woman’s status. Besides, another an important factor is that money plays a vital role in marriage life. With the relationship between love and money, we can draw a conclusion that marriage still keeps happiness and harmony. But there are some different values that come from different periods and works in America, people should make a right choice on marriage life. With some historical reasons, American housewives have been generally accepted by society. Women are willing to be homemaker because they will not feel pressure in their life. So we should know these middle-class woman’s attitude to marriage life. Marriage is filled with conflicts, and everyone has different values so that it can affect the marriage.Through studies, we have a good grasp of the characteristics of American middle-class women to some degree. We can understand the status of women in their family life. As a result of some social changes, most families will be confronted with problems. Though American economy has been in a dominant position in the world, there are still family crisis.Desperate Housewives is a very popular TV series in American. It described something happened in Wisteria Lane. Through writing a housewife Marry Alice committed suicide to revel what was happening in the Wisteria Lane street, and depicting four middle-class women married life. This TV series showed that American middle-class women encountered familyproblems. In recent years, the TV series have been a tendency of traditional culture. It exposed several ladies daily life and marriage. Desperate Housewives shows that several ladies living environment and concession under men’s leading position. From on surface, we can think these are ideal married life, but in terms of specific, they still exist a lot of matters. The four ladies all hope that they have a perfect husband and children, a good financial status. Desperate these conditions to American middle-class housewives, they still can not satisfy their need to acquire a original peaceful marriage life. Most American housewives have found similar spot from the TV series. Even the First Lady of America Laura Bush said, the President is filled with energy with snoring loudly every night at 9 o’clock so that I have to watch TV show. So I can say I’m a desperate housewife. The TV series is a mirror that shows our life. With the humorous phrases, it gives an index to the crisis of modern people’s marriage life. It is also an educational and moral TV. It manifests that American middle-class housewives are confronted with problems in marriage and it urges us to handle these problems as well.Desperate Housewives got a award of Hollywood, which tells us that no matter what difficulties you have met in our life, we should make a right respond to it. The play describes these ladies’characteristics and different values in detail, it lets us come up with some ways to solve it.Chapter One Challenges in marriage value of U.S middle-class women 1.1 Getting rid of siege mode marriageMr. Qian Zhongshu in the “siege” described the marriage: “Getting married as if the golden lacquer cage, the birds outside the cage want to live in, the birds in cage want to fly out. This “siege”type of marriage is reflected vividly through the four housewives of marriage life in Desperate Housewives. These housewives all have received well education, but they tie closely their fate together with the name of marriage. Marriage of the castle can bring the protection and comfort, so it is understandable for women to want to enter the castle. But in addition to to the protection and comfort, there will be quarrel, violence, and even death. The four housewives all have experienced the process of marriage--divorce--remarrying.In the pursuit of the marriage, they had the joy, but also had annoyance in “siege”. Take Susan for instance, the story began with a divorced single-mother appearing, after finding herhusband derailment, she decided to go out of the “siege”. After a period of healing and adjustment, she started a love with the Mike, and eventually enter to the palace of the marriage. However, living for a long time in the marriage castle will produce the inducement and motives that they want to go out. Sure enough, their marriage ended up with breaking down. Susan began a new round of “siege”marriage. The other three housewives also experienced the similar such circle of marriage. Marriage is not a castle that they want to rush out. On the contrary, for women, marriage more like a necessary shelter, and she is regarded as the certificate of women. In Desperate Housewives, we can know that the women choose to rush out the siege mode of marriage, which has often beyond their bottom line.In the 1970s, America experienced the feminist movement, especially after September 11 incident, the people started to feel worried about their safety. During the U.S. economy grew slowly and social employee increased rapidly, women were called to leave their job and returned to home. The Desperate Housewives is accomplished in this social background. The four main characters in the play, after they getting married, they have to transform into housewives and choose to sacrifice themselves for their family. Therefore, the economy completely depended on their husband. When these modern American women have only marriage, their desire for the family, marriage, and a sense of security also will be more strong. If young women can use beauty, career and so on some external packaging to keep their sense of superiority and self-esteem, then those women who have become housewives only can make use of a happy marriage to maintain a sense of superiority and self-esteem. At the same time, more important is that marriage become the guarantee of their social status and upper life. In other words, the rich only have marriage, the poor too. This is easier to understand why the four housewives again and again enter into the “siege” mode of marriage, yet also want to rush out. They think the marriage above all else. Take Gabriel for instance, she divorced with Carlos and lost her fund. She had to go to work and even forced to work as the cosmetics salesman. On the occasion of downfall, Victor, such a handsome and successful people to pursue her, her subconscious psychological reaction is happy. But for a long time in the “siege”, when she found Victor is in the infidelity of the feeling, she was struggling to choose go out of the marriage castle. Although she had gone through two times marriage, but Gabriel is not still end. Finally, she became reconciled with her ex-husband Carlos, and repeated the type of siege marriage. These housewives experienced a lot. They wanted to get rid of the siege type of marriage. So in addition to looking for men, they also have too much something to do. Let women depend on men for survival no longer, and make themselves have a foothold in society. In the Desperate Housewives, four housewives all embarked on the road of pursuit career. By comparing the opening and ending of the play, it can be found that when the housewives no longer regarded marriage and men as the whole of life and no longer confined themselves to the family, they not only gained the independence of money, but also got rid of the cage of marriage completely. They went out of the siege mode of marriage and really gained the happiness. Finally, they all became a beautiful landscape.1.2 The challenge of housewives in traditional pursuitOn the basis of some psychologist, membership is quite important in the family. In addition to the culture, families also have altered with the traditional concept. All kinds of issues are shown in families. In Desperate Housewives, Lynette maintained a leading position in her family, and she needed to look after her children after marriage. She resigned her job and had again three sons and two daughters, which made her depressed. Since her children were born, her husband had to be busy with his work so that he could not provide the help for her, Lynette also had to take care of her children alone. After a long time, Lynette would feel helpless and thought herself is not a good mother. Sometimes, she even depended on some drugs to hold the joy every day. Afterwards, when she found her husband start to betray their marriage, she felt frustrated. She was a successful woman in the past, but now she was only a housewife. She has the good ability to deal with the job, but it’s precisely because she has these children so that she has to give up her career to look after her children staying at home. Almost all people’s lives have some pressure, such as work pressure, psychological pressure. Lynette chose to work in advertisement agency, she needed to balance her energy. One side she needed to serve the family, the other she needed to pay attention to her job. In the past few years, Lynette started to struggle with her drugs, cancer, boss, miscarriage and son on. But she only can depend on her husband. At the eighth season, she gets married with Tom. But she found she was cheated by Tom, and after experienced a lot. She got cancer and needed to treat through chemical therapy. Those women who has work play a vital role in life, they not only take care of her children, but manage their work. However, the husbands don’t have to do trivial matter, and they cankeep the line of normal life. In other words, husbands need only to make money. They will not spend too much time on their children or families. Everyone has the limited energy. These things can bring the women bigger pressure. Some housewives want to escape from in the huge pressure life. They also want to relax themselves or relieve the pressure. They want to challenge the traditional pursuit, and hope share some housework with their husband. When their marriage life is happy, they can feel more relaxed.1.3 The challenge of housewives in individualist pursuitWe can say that marriage is very important part in people’s life and no one can intervene it. Marriage is not a matter of morality, people have the right to select the spouse who live with them. They also can make a decision to their marriage, they can change the marriage. In America, the personal rights are quite valued. It popularizes every member in the family rather than the entire family. People are free to choose their own happy marriage. American individualistic values are related to individual equality, and individual right. Several years ago, American society admitted the women as a homemaker in the family, and their job seemed to obey the husband and satisfied the demand of housework. But now, the divorce or the fail marriage is not women’s nightmare at all. They were no longer despised by other people. They could have more choices. In Desperate Housewives, four housewives have transformed the homemaker into the independent women. They are independent on finance.Edie was a flirt, and she used the beauty to require what she expected and she had undergone the three times marriage. The greatest happiness was to allure men. She even extorted money from other several housewives’ husband, which caused other housewives detest her. But later, Edie got married with Dave, and they returned to the Wisteria Lane. She had again made up with other housewives. Finally, she found her husband Dave’s shameful secret and rushed out the home, unfortunately, she died for accident. In fact, Edie was a little kind and had open-mindedness. She was only one who wanted to tell truth in four housewives. But she didn’t know why she had no female friends, when she moved to Wisteria Lane, these housewives would keep the distance with her. Her heart was kind, and she was longing for making friends with other females. She also wanted to pursue the happy life.Chapter Two Problems in marriage faced by U.S middle-class women2.1 Single-parent familiesWith the development of society, people’s living standard is more and more better. People’s ideas have been affected by external factors, the marriage is also influenced, so that there are a lot of single-parent families. According to the date manifests that the quantities of single mother families are twice as the single father families in America. Due to divorce, separation and so on, a large number of American women live alone. They need to support their family, pay for the rent, and depend on the welfare to survive.Bree’s daughter got pregnant without marriage. Bree was worried about the gossip, so she wanted to send her daughter to foreign country to deliver. But finally, Bree made a feign of being pregnant, and hided her daughter at home until her daughter gave birth to baby. In America, there are three kinds of single mother mentioned widely, one is divorced women, the other is that she brought up her child without marriage, another is that a single mother after her husband died. Single mother had already been the serious problems in American. Even the President Obama also is from single-parent family.Susan is also a single mother who lived with her daughter Julie. And Julie went to go to college, then brought back a boyfriend. But when Julie’s boyfriend intended to propose her, she had lost interest in marriage. But later on, she was pregnant with another man and finally she turned into be a single mother. In the 21th century, more and more children come from a single-parent family, the reason is that there are many unmarried pregnant women have enhancing gradually.Generally speaking, the unmarried women who have daughter or son is widely accepted in the United States. The volume of single-parent family is growing. However, the majorities of single-parent family are quite poor, which is about twice than ordinary family. And then single-parent family will have a negative impact on their children, such as social kills, values, mentality, personality and so on. According to the studies, it has found that the crime rate is quite high in single-parent families. There are many Americans start to think how important whole family is. Therefore, a large number of people have advised that the government don’t have to appropriate to single-parent too much, thus people can settle better the family without the government’s help. Government should help the unemployed people.2.2 Divorced families and remarried familiesDuring the 1940s-1990s, the divorce is very universal and is confined with age in America. The divorce rate is quite high, even among every two persons, one breaks a marriage. Tocompare with other countries, American divorce rate has been for a long time. Maybe the American ideas are different from Chinese, they are more open-mind so that they think they can get married at any age. Because of these reasons, a part of divorce should be attributed to them. In Desperate Housewives, Lynette’s mother Stella, her marriage was not happy, after her husband died, she started to fall in love with other people, but there were not suitable. Finally, she got married with Glenn Wingfield, yet after a short time, Stella become a widow.Americans are fond of hazard and they don’t afraid change, in contrast, they are more likely to try to change. They are unwilling to comply with traditional customs and they trust the beautiful scenery is coming. In recent years, there is a mode of marriage called “flash marriage”, which means two persons through mutual understanding within short time, accomplishing rapidly emotional processes and legal procedures. Love is on the basis of marriage, but it is precisely because the “flash marriage”have no enough understanding to each other, which is the direct cause of the higher divorce rate. However, the main cause to divorce is financial crisis. After the Second World War, some enterprises became impoverished, and they started to reduce the staff members. So there are a lot of families facing economic problems, which causes many disputes in their family, making the divorce rate added. But now the divorce rate has fallen in America. Now the women may receive higher education, the status of women also have improved. It can let women make a right choice or settle problems better when face family difficulties. Formerly, a large number of American women can get married and have a child without going to college, maybe these women still are immature so that their family is unstable. In the 19th century, the women who are lucky enough to receive higher education may find the good job to show their talent, but there are also a part of women can’t find a satisfied job, they have to stay at home as the traditional housewives. In the United States, the research have manifested that the men with higher education are willing to get married with higher education women, maybe there are common feelings between them. Compared with the women with lower degree, the well-educated women are in low divorce rate, they can deal with better the marriage problems. All in all, it’s difficult for the well-educated women to find good mate formerly, but now they can have a happy marriage. In Desperate Housewives, Lynette went to the college and turned back as a excellent businesswoman, her social kills are quite sufficient. When she met Tom, they got married and changed dwelling place to Wisteria Lane. In America, women are more willing to be thehousewives stay at home after marriage, they need to take care of their babies and serve their family. But new generation well-educated women are fond of finding the way that they favorite to live. Yet the men play an important role in their family, they provide the economic foundation for women. The new generation women will pay more attention to their child’s education. However, a great number of people divorced. Some people can feel alone, especially for women, it’s big pressure for raising their children or support the families for them. So they expect to find the better dependence for themselves, and hope that their spouse share a part of responsibility. Therefore, they want to remarry with somebody. According to the data demonstrate that about two-thirds women remarried under the age of thirty. Yet they remain their second marriage no more than 6 years, they will restart their marriage. For the remarried families, the divorce rate is quite higher than first marriage. Nowadays, about percent of 70 children who grow up with their father. Among the divorced parents, most of them feel like remarrying. The remarried family is also a whole family. Some people want to remarry after their wife or husband died. The both sides have children, which forms a step-parents family. But today’s remarried families are basically from parents divorced. In the 1980s, the divorce rate reaches the peak in America. The percent of 60 divorcee choose to remarry, which causes a large number of children live in the remarried families. But in such families, there will be some contradictions and problems more or less. It has difficulties in building a harmonious atmosphere. Firstly, the major problem is relationship, the couples need to handle the relationship between them and their children. They have difficulties in adapting to each other, because it’s difficult for them to change the habits that developed years. So the families will be confronted with many conflicts that caused by different values and habits. Even these things will leads them to divorce again. In the past decades, the remarried women or men would be despised by their relatives in United States. There were less remarried families. But now more and more people can accept the remarried families and schools also start to get more understanding to their children. According to the studies show that the remarried families will be the leading family in society in America. In Desperate Housewives, Edie also is from the remarried family, and she get married three times. So she have many complicated relationship with her husbands. The reasons of remarried rising rates can be shown in the following several aspects. Firstly, remarried women willcompare with their former lovers about good or terrible things. It will give rise to argument and also hurt other side. Then, the habits also will affect their life. Because everyone has different hobbies and habits, these remarried couple will take a long time to adapt to each other. But there a part of couples can not understand each other, which causes they divorce. Finally, selfishness is also a factor. As for the remarried families, the both sides could have children, they could be more concerned about their own children when they live together. The parents have the selfish psychology. These reasons also will cause conflicts in their marriage.According to the American scholar, the women complete their first marriage much longer, because they need to spend time receiving the higher education and being busy with their career.Chapter Four Analysis of feminism of U.S middle-class women When it comes to Feminism, Desperate Housewives is concentrated on women rights as a necessary part of human beings. Feminism can be seen a trend in first feminist movement that began in 19th century. Feminist film is the most important factors for feminism study. Feminism is clearly shown in Desperate Housewives, which encourages women rights, modeling a group of independent and successful modern women.Susan could be a woman who lacks of lucky. The economy has been her biggest problem and challenge. Compared with several other housewives, her life is embarrassed. Her husband, Mike is only a plumber, whose wages is not high, and in order to maintain the cost of family, Susan has to try to make a living. But she still is optimistic and positive to face the life, which touched the audience. Susan is simple-minded, and she seems to have no special kills. However, there is a part of people who has limited ability, but they love life and know perseverance. As for marriage, Susan experienced a failed marriage, and then fell in love with Mike. It has to say this is a happy family.Bree can be said to be the most exquisite woman, she looks well-dressed, high-grade material makeup. In terms of capacity, her career is arranged in good order, Bree’s control desire is very strong. She seems to be a queen at home, she does things carefully so that she can ensure each link can not go wrong. She thought she devoted herself into her family but their family seemed to lack some warm mood. Bree is very thoughtful and considerate. She can keep calm when she encounters difficulties, and she will come up with solution in the shortestpossible time. This is a highly intelligent woman, showing a perfect and strong external image, she will not easily reveal her inner thoughts. She also was selfish, when Andrew accidentally killed Calos's mother, Bree shielded her son. However, it’s regrettable that Bree’s love is not perfect. The first husband, Rex died, and then she broke up with second husband because of without feelings.Lynette is more wise housewife, her determination, patience can be shown in the following two aspects, one is that she has a good business after resignation and she helps her husband Tom’s career overcome difficulties in family, these show her extraordinary ability. The other is that she faces a big family and pays for it too much. There appear all kinds of twists and turns, Lynette will depend on herself to deal with them. Similarly, Lynette is also relatively strong that she occupy dominant position in the family. Facing four children and husband, she need to settle too much things without nanny. In a word, her marriage is happy. There are no perfect place for any marriage or family, but as long as we work hard, we won’t regret it.Gabrielle thinks beauty and money can solve everything, she often goes to seduce, but not every time is successful, and sometimes it makes people laugh. Gabrielle is not a good mother in the education side, because she lacks of patience and she is selfish. But we could see that during the days, when her husband was in blind, she had to shield the aura of luxury to take care of husband and her daughter. Gabrielle lives in the way of frank and wayward, she looks like a spoiled little woman. The reason could be that she has both beauty and successful husband. Therefore, her marriage is quite perfect.ConclusionThe main purpose of this paper is tell us that the family problems, which attracts our attention to family life and what kind of value that we build in the family. It impels us to find some available solutions to handle these problems. This paper is based on some research and the combination of Desperate Housewives to reflect the problems faced by American middle-class women. These problems include the financial matter, their child’s education, different values, marriage relationship, single-parent, divorced and remarried families.American middle-class women are confronted with these problems that created by social changes and economic changes. As we all known, America is a religion country, their life is related to closely the religion. Because of the religion, these housewives’lives are affectedgreatly by it. In Desperate Housewives, Carlos often has a disagreement over marriage, which leads his life value changed. Religion plays an important role in American society, but it still can not deal with these problems. These housewives need to rely on the available measures, such as the laws and insurance, etc. In my opinion, when we encounter the problems in our daily life, we should regard the harmony as the important point, keeping calm to deal with them. Don’t quarrel with each other. It will be easier to solve them. If not, we can handle it through laws. Laws will protect our legal right. All in all, because of the limited source, we can not completely deal with these problems. This paper only research the middle-class women, rather than all Americans. I hope there will be more exactly data to be provided in the future.。

Everyone has a little dirty laundry inside。
二、God made man equal。
