“You press the button,we do the rest.”That was George Eastman's message to amateur photographers in 1889.His many contributions to the field of photography helped to popularize the hobby by making it both inexpensive and easy.

Photography was invented in France in the late 1830s.When Eastman was a boy,it was still a difficult art.Photographers needed great skill, much technical knowledge, expensive equipment, and strong backs.Cameras were big and heavy. Also, the photographer had to carry around chemicals and equipment to prepare wet photographic plates and develop pictures.

At the age of 24 in 1878,Eastman began searching for ways to simplify the photographic process. He worked at day time and experimented at home in the evening.Eventually his efforts were rewarded. In 1879,he invented and patented (获得……专利) a machine for coating the glass plate used in cameras.

The following year he leased the third floor of a building in Rochester,New York and began commercial production and sales of these plates. From this simple beginning came the present day Eastman Kodak Company, which does a billion dollars worth of business every year and has branches throughout the world.

Eastman went from one success to another. In 1884,he perfected flexible roll film and designed the roll holder for winding it.In 1888,he produced a lightweight camera, the Kodak, priced at $ 25.His company had a one dollar camera on the market by 1990.His factory and laboratory kept growing. They became vast enterprises producing many different models of cameras, color film, film for motion pictures, and a variety of photographic supplies.

Thanks to George Eastman, photography has become not only a popular hobby, but an important medium for teaching and spreading knowledge. Its contributions to medicine, science, industry, education, art and entertainment have significantly affected the 20th century.

Sometime early in the next century, human beings will move to Mars. They will live there for about a year, and then will be replaced with another group of pioneers. Building the base on Mars will advance our knowledge of the solar system and aid in our understanding of the earth.

We already know that Mars resembles the earth in many aspects:general size, presence of water, length of day, range of temperatures. These resemblances have caused many people to consider a centuries-long project:to terraform Mars. Terraforming means altering a planet's surface so that Earth's life forms can survive there. This concept, previously found only in science fiction is now being seriously considered by scientists.

Terraforming Mars is theoretically simple:add nitrogen and oxygen to the atmosphere;pump water to the surface;and add the earth's plants and animals in the order in which they developed on Earth. But it will take at least 300 years.

Some people think that such a project is too huge for humans to undertake, but there are very good reasons to make the attempt. The earth now contains some 6 billion people, and no one has any idea of how many humans the earth can support. Our very existence and numbers are threatening many other species. We also have had some experience with terraforming our own planet:altering the landscape, the atmosphere and the climate. Currently terraforming earth has become a wiser activity as we try to control global warming, air and water pollution, and preserve some natural living places.

While the possibility of such a project is small,it is not impossible. Even if earth-bound societies come and go in the next 300 years, the project can continue through the work of the Mars settlers without the need for constant backing from the earth.

The future existence of all the people in our world may very well depend upon our ability to terraform Mars.

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the Website you've visited,or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact,it's likely that some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse,a girl friend,a marketing company,a boss,a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is,they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—the 21st century replacement of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it's important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages,at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs(碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases,a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is:Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no.”

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found a strong bad feeling about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their pr ivacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny part of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths(收费站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will give away personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon(优惠券).

But privacy does matter—at least sometimes. It's like health:When you have it,you don't notice it. Only when it's gone do you wish you'd done more to protect it.

36.What does the author mean by saying “the 21st century replacement of being caught naked”?

A.People's personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge.

B.In the 21st century people try every means to look into others' secrets.

C.People tend to be more frank with each other in the information age.

D.Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.

38.Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret”?

A.Modern society has finally developed into an open society.

B.People leave traces around when using modern technology.

C.There are always people who are curious about others' affairs.

D.Many search engines benefit from giving away people's identities.

A.They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.

B.They use various loyalty cards for business transactions(交易).

C.They rely most and more on electronic devices.

D.They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.

Jim suffered heart problems. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was drawing to a close.

When his heart problems led to operation,Jim went through it successfully, and a full recovery was expected. Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly. Jim was rushed back to operation, but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before his 48th birthday.

Dr. Bruce Smoller,a psychologist, had had many conversations with him,and the more he learned, the stranger he realized Jim's case was. When Jim was a child, his father,a teacher, suffered a heart attack and stayed home to recover. One morning Jim asked his father to look over his homework, promising to come home from school at noon to pick it up. His father agreed, but when Jim returned his father had died. Jim's father was 48.

“I think all his life Jim believed he killed his father,” Dr. Smoller says. “He felt that if he had not asked him to look at his homework, his father would have lived. Jim had been troubled by the idea. The operation was the trial he had expected for forty years. ” Smolle r believes that Jim willed himself not to live to the age of 48.

Jim's case shows the powerful role that attitude plays in physical health, and that childhood experiences produce far-reaching effect on the health of grown-ups. Although most cases are less direct than Jim's,studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart disease and mental illness.

Animals are our close friends. Without them, especially the rare species, the world would be too dull to live in.Unfortunately,we have heard recently that rare animals, even when kept in the zoo, couldn't escape being hurt and killed,at which we can feel nothing but shocked. The reason is that some people lack understanding of the existence of these animals and don't care for them.

A proud rose thinks that it's superior to other plants in the forest because of its beauty. But it later learns that beauty is not the only thing when it sees the cactus helping thirsty birds.

This story teaches us that we should not judge people or things based only on their appearance. There are other characteristics such as kindness and intelligence that are even more important.Beauty is only a superficial attraction but it doesn't show what is in a person's heart. When I was in primary school a boy was often teased by his classmates because of his poor clothes. They judged him only on the surface but I knew he was very kind and honest. He was excellent at maths and would often help me with my lessons after school.Although his family had little money,he refused to take any money from my parents for his help because he said,“I help you because you are my friend not because I want your money.”I was very touched by his words and was ashamed of what my classmates had done to him.

模块1 Unit 1 Lifestyles Lesson 1 A Perfect Day? A couch potato When I wake up I don’t get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children’s programs and old movies until about half-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film –they’re showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news ag ain. I like the main news at six o’clock. At nine thirty, if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch off the TV at about two o’clock. I never watch TV at night. I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don’t go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks round in a circle. Of course, I couldn’t live this lifestyle without a good wife. She’s not here now because she’s working, but she always makes my meals. We haven’t got much money, you know, but we’re happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here’s the remote control. You’ve got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great! A workaholic I normally wake up about five minutes before my alarm clock goes off. As soon as I hear my alarm clock, I jump out of my bed. It takes me less than fifteen minutes to wash, get changed, have breakfast, leave home and get on a bus. I am always the first person to get to the office. The mornings are always very busy and the afternoons are even busier! Meetings and phone calls take up a large part of the day. Every minute of the day is filled with urgent matters. By around eight o’clock, I usually find some time to do my own paperwork and answer some personal e-mails. When I get home at about ten, I look at some documents that I bring back from the office so that I can be ready for t he next day’s work. I get to bed around midnight when my wife and children are already asleep. I seldom have time for fun and other activities with my family. My family complains about it. But I try to work hard so that I can make more money for them. Besides, I get bored if there’s nothing to do. I like being busy. Lesson 4 City and country Debbie is an accountant in a large company in the centre of London. I need to be in my office by nine o’clock so I usually get up at seven o’clock. I travel

Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow. Some others have just the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful. Personally, I agree with the second view. Actually I have more reasons for it. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what’s more, I am able to better understand the author’s ideas. In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.
