Unit 2 The Power of WordsThe Power of a NoteOn my first job as sports editor for the Montpelier (Ohio) Leader Enterprise, I didn't get a lot of fan mail, so I was intrigued by a letter that was dropped on my desk one morning. When I opened it, I read: "A nice piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work." It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a teenager (being paid the grand total of 15 cents a column inch), his words couldn't have been more inspiring. 11 kept the letter in my desk drawer until it got rag-eared. Whenever I doubted I had the right stuff to be a writer, I would reread Don's note and feel confident again.Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habit of writing a quick, encouraging word to people in all walks of life. "When I make others feel good about themselves," he told me, "I feel good too."Not surprisingly, he had a body of friends as big as nearby Lake Erie. When he died last year at 75, the paper was flooded with calls and letters from people who had been recipients of his spirit-lifting words.Over the years, I've tried to copy the example of Don and other friends who care enough to write uplifting comments, because I think they are on to something important. In a world too often cold and unresponsive, such notes bring warmth and reassurance. We all need a boost from time to time, and a few lines of praise have been known to turn around a day, even a life. Why, then, are there so few upbeat note writers? My guess is that many who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They're afraid they'll be misunderstood, sound sentimental or insincere. Also, writing takes time; it's far easier to pick up the phone. The drawback with phone calls, of course, is that they don't last. A note attaches more importance to our well-wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be read more than once, savored and treasured.Even though note writing may take longer, some pretty busy people do it, including George Bush. Some say he owes much of his success in politics to his ever-ready pen. How? Throughout his career he has followed up virtually every contact with a cordial response—a compliment, a line of praise or a nod of thanks. His notes go not only to friends and associates, but to casual acquaintances and total strangers—like the surprised person who got a warm pat on the back for lending Bush an umbrella.Even top corporate managers, who have mostly affected styles of leadership that can be characterized only as tough, cold and aloof, have begun to learn the lesson, and earn the benefits, of writing notes that lift people up. Former Ford chairman Donald Peterson, who is largely credited for turning the company round in the 1980s, made it a practice to write positive messages to associates every day. "I'd just scribble them on a memo pad or the corner of a letter and pass them along," he says. "The most important ten minutes of your day are those you spend doing something to boost the people who work for you."Too often," he observed, "people we genuinely like have no idea how we feel about them. Too often we think, I haven't said anything critical; why do I have to say something positive? We forget that human beings need positive reinforcement—in fact, we thrive on it!"What does it take to write letters that lift spirits and warm hearts? Only a willingness to express our appreciation. The most successful practitioners include what I call the four "S's" of note writing.1) They are sincere. No one wants false praise.2) They are usually short. If you can't say what you want to say in three sentences, you're probably straining3) They are specific. Complimenting a business colleague by telling him "good speech" is too vague; "great story about Warren Buffet's investment strategy" is precise.4) They are spontaneous. This gives them the freshness and enthusiasm that will linger in the reader's mind long afterward. It's difficult to be spontaneous when you have to hunt for letter-writing materials, so I keep paper, envelopes and stamps close at hand, even when I travel. Fancy stationery isn't necessary; it's the thought that counts. So, who around you deserves a note of thanks or approval? A neighbor, your librarian, a relative, your mayor, your mate, a teacher, your doctor? You don't need to be poetic. If you need a reason, look for a milestone, the anniversary of a special event you shared, or a birthday or holiday. For the last 25 years, for example, I've prepared an annual Christmas letter for long-distance friends, and I often add a handwritten word of thanks or congratulations. Acknowledging some success or good fortune that has happened during the year seems particularly appropriate considering the spirit of the Christmas season.Be generous with your praise. Superlatives like "greatest," "smartest," "prettiest" make us all feel good. Even if your praise is a little ahead of reality, remember that expectations are often the parents of dreams fulfilled.Today I got a warm, complimentary letter from my old boss and mentor, Norman Vincent Peale. His little note to me was full of uplifting phrases, and it sent me to my typewriter to compose a few overdue letters of my own. I don't know if they will make anybody else's day, but they made mine. As my friend Don Wolfe said, making others feel good about themselves makes me feel good too.便笺的力量1 我当体育编辑,最早是为蒙比利埃(俄亥俄州)的《企业导报》工作,当时我很少收到体育迷的来信。

I work as a salesclerk in a big department store in Fuji, Japan. Six years ago when I was 21 years old, I went to California to attend college. Life in the United States was much more difficult than I had ever imagined. It wasn't like the descriptions I had read in my textbooks. People often seemed tense and so I felt very alone. One of my hardest classes was physical education. We often played volleyball. All the other students were good at it, but I clearly wasn't. One afternoon, the teacher asked me to hit the ball to my classmates. For most people, this would be easy but I was terrified that I would make a fool of myself. When one of the boys on my team saw how nervous I was, he walked up to me and whispered, "Come on, you can do that."You can't imagine how those words of encouragement made me feel. I was so happy that I almost cried. I managed to hit the ball and I think I thanked the young man, but I'm not sure.I have never forgotten his kind words of encouragement. He probably doesn't even remember what he said to me or how much his kindness meant to me. Whenever things aren't going well, I think of those simple words of encouragement: Come on, you can do that.We often forget that our words can have a powerful impact on other people. Even a simple word—good or bad—can have a lasting effect.Listening 3Ex1: 1 80 2. Caps, sweaters and scarves 3. The elderly lady’s daughter-in-law 4. Because she was blind. 5. 19.6. China7. One8. It means so much to me.I never expected such a detailed response. I am eighty years old and I am blind. There is little I can do except knit and that is why I knit so many caps, sweaters and scarves. Of course, I can't write, so my daughter-in-law is writing this letter for me.I know a little bit about the work you are doing. At the age of nineteen I married a man who was going to work asa missionary to China. For 40 years, with an occasional year at home in America, we worked in China. We had two sons, only one of whom is still alive. After 40 years, my husband's health began to fail. We moved back to the States where he took chargeof a settlement house in Brooklyn, New York. When my husband died, I came to Toronto to live with my son and daughter-in-law.The second part:What I most wanted to say is this. For 60 years I have been making up missionary packages of clothing, food, medicine, or books. I have sent them to various parts of the world. Sometimes I have received a printed slip of acknowledgement, sometimes nothing. Never before in all these years have I had a personal letter describing the village and telling me who are wearing the clothing and what they said. I never thought that in my lifetime I would receive a letter like that. One night the pain was really bad and I became scared. So the next day I went to the hospital and they cut out the lump and stitched me up. Then I heard the doctor say to his assistant, "Get it to the lab for tests right away." I was told to return in five days to have my stitches out and get myresult. However, for some reason, I got the days mixed up and missed my appointment! It was a day late! Interviewer: Go on...Carol: I phoned up the hospital and the receptionist said the doctor wasn't in, but she'd put me through to his assistant. Oh,my heart was pounding by this time and my mouth was all dry.Interviewer: With stress?Carol: Yes. I was really nervous. Anyhow, the assistant said "OK" and told me to hold on while she got my card. When she returned to the phone she said, "I think you'd better come in and talk to the doctor in person." Oh, I was so shocked.Interviewer: Oh dear!Carol: "Why?" I asked. "Is there anything wrong?" There was a long pause. "Well," she said. "The doctor will tell you about the treatment." So...there's me thinking: Oh my God, this is it. I've got cancer. I felt sick quite literally "So when can I talk to the doctor?"I asked. His assistant said she'd get him to call me later that morning. Interviewer: Oh, no, poor you! What did you do?Carol: Oh, I went to work. But I couldn't concentrate or work straight. Every time the phone rang, I nearly passed out. I kept ringing the hospital, but the doctor was late. Eventually, he rang me up. Oh, I was really shaking. He said, "Ms Smith?" I said, "Yes?" "Oh, everything's fine," he said. "No further treatment is necessary." What? I made him say it three times. I said, "So why didn't your assistant tell me that? It would have saved me all this worry!" "I don't know," he said. He did apologize, though.Interviewer: How scary!Carol: Yeah. A couple of days later I got a letter from the hospital with the results of the tests. It said that I'd had some kind of "tumor". I looked it up in a medical dictionary and it explained that it was a benign kind of tumor. I think the assistant must have seen the word "tumor" and immediately thought it meant cancer. That was a day I'll never forget.Further ListeningListening 1A D ABC BScripts:A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. Michael, one of the audience, raised his hand and said, “It’s not because I say good fortune, good fortune, good fortune that I feel better. Nor will saying bad luck, bad luck, bad luck make me feel worse. They’re only words and words by themselves have no power.”Shull replied, “Shut up, you fool! You don’t understand a thing about this.” Michael was stunned, his face became red and he was abo ut to reply, “You, son of bitch!’Then Mr. Shull raised his hand, “Please excuse me. I didn’t mean to upset you. Please accept my most sincere apologies.” Michael calmed down. Some people in the hall murmured; others shuffled their feet. Then Mr. Shull res umed, “There’s the reply to the question you asked me. A few words made you very angry. The other words calmed you down. Now do you understand the power of words?”Listening 3All of us would like our friends to know our 1) moods and our needs instinctively. That rarely happens and never happens 2) regularly. No one will ever be able to 3) meet your needs if they don't know what your needs are. It is true that you take 4) risks when you let your needs be known. You may be turned down and 5) hurt. However, when you are expecting your friends to read your mind and 6) satisfy your needs without your input, you are going to be 7) disappointed and hurt without your friends ever knowing why. This is a common misconception of friendships and even marriages. When asked if he had told his wife he wanted her to ride bicycles with him, one husband said, "Of course I didn't tell her. After all these years of marriage, she 8) should know!" The sad thing is she will probably never know 9) unless he tells her. So, tell your friends what you want and what you need. Otherwiseyou will be 10) stuck in a relationships that can never grow to be "best friends".Listening 4TTFTFTTFTFScripts:My friend used to commute to work daily on a train. After getting off the train, he always walked the short distance to his office building. Every morning, he passed an old man who was always at then same spot with a cup in hand, hoping to get a bit of change from passers-by. For most people, this person was someone to be ignored as if he didn’t exist. But my friend would always say good morning to him and bid him have a good day. The stranger would smile back, say good morning and remain until all the commuters had gone on their way.Occasionally, my friend would drop a dollar or two in his cup on his way as he said hello. This behavior went on for several years until one day, his last day on the job before retirement. My friend stopped for a few moments to talk with this man. He told the man that he would no longer be passing by because this was his last day on the job. The man took his hand and shook it warmly saying that he had always looked forward to seeing my friend pass his way, not because he dropped a few dollars in his cup. He said he would miss my friend because he was one of the few people out of thousands who ever said hello when passing him by. And he was the only one who ever bid him have a good day. The man also said that his warm words always brightened his day and helped him to continue on despite being ignored by thousands of others who saw him daily.。

Unit1Men Are Different from Women in Many WaysTraditionally, men and women were seen as opposite poles of a magnet. Men were strong, women were weak; men were the breadwinners, women were the homemakers; men were rational, women were emotional. In accordance with these beliefs, the men filled the leadership positions in society, as well as the majority of positions that required courage, clear-thinking and intellect. Women took on the nurturing, caring or supportive jobs such as nurse, teacher, assistant. However, modern society has greatly challenged these perceived differences between men and womenThese days gender roles are becoming less clear. Women are moving into the male-dominated occupations and proving that they can be equally successful in these fields. Moreover, some men are taking on the homemaker role and finding that it suits them. In some cultures, for example the Naxi culture of southwestern China, the women have always been the head of the household and responsible for both work and finance. So, are men and women really all that different? From the changing perspectives towards this question, it would seem that socialization plays a large role in defining masculinity and femininity in any given time period and in any given culture. In other words, perhaps men and women are not that different after all. Unit2Culture plays an important role in business. In different cultures there are different ideas about when meetings should be scheduled, how much notice should be given, Where people should be seated and how the negotiations should be proceed. During the negotiations there are also vast cultural differences in what is considered appropriate language, communication style and body language. For example, some culture value eye contact, others do not. Some cultures use 'yes' as an acknowledgement of what the person has said, other use 'yes' only for agreement.Social conventions of greeting, dressing, eating and entertaining also vary considerably amongst cultures and these are important to learn since a lot of business takes place while having dinner or enjoyingdrinks together. If a businessman attempts a cross-cultural business partnership without an adequate awareness of his associate's culture, he is likely to encounter misunderstanding and may even cause offence. This will damage and may even end the business relationship. Therefore, cultural differences must be carefully handled when doing business with people from different countries.Unit3Fighting Against PiracyNowadays the problem of piracy has become increasingly serious. Not only is there a serious lack of knowledge amongst the general public about piracy issues, but there is also an attitude of indifference. These days piracy is strongly evident in the commercial world in the wide availability of illegal VCDs and DVDs , the inclusion of Copyrighted pictures, web graphics, video clips and magazine portions in business presentations and the photocopying of books and articles for distribution without the author's permission. The negative consequences of piracy are two-fold. Firstly, the Copyright owners are likely to suffer significant financial losses. Secondly, the Copyright owner loses recognition, if the source of the material is unacknowledged. Therefore it is important for all citizens to become educated about piracy issues, to follow copyright laws in their own lives, and to encourage their colleagues and friends to do the same.Unit4The Importance of Learning Spoken EnglishIn today's modern world, learning spoken English has many advantages. English is fast becoming the international language of many fields, including politics, business and education. Not only is English used between native speakers and non-native speakers, but it is also used increasingly as a common language in interactions between non-native speakers.Having a good grasp of spoken English helps you to improve your chances of employment. These days, there are many foreign companies operating from China, and many Chinese-owned companies have trade links withforeign partners. These companies require speakers of English with sufficient language skills to ensure smooth business transactions.Spoken English also provides the chances for you to communicate socially with people from many other countries. It gives you a window into other cultures, and other perspectives of the world. It also gives you access to foreign films, TV programs, music and news. Therefore, spoken English is an important and fundamental tool in today's global village.Unit5Business EthicsCreating and sustaining an ethical corporation isn't as difficult as you might think; it's actually easier than some of the day-to-day business challenges you face. The keys to running an ethical company are accountability, honesty, and information transparency.Corporations aren't ethical or evil in and of themselves--but people can be. So ethics must focus on you and the people you work with. Most people want to do the right thing, but organizational structure doesnot guarantee they will do the right thing, without meaning to or even knowing it. Structuring an ethical corporation makes the goal easier to achieve. The challenge could not be more urgent. A substantial majority of people in China are dissatisfied with the social behavior of our corporations, say several recent news reports. Poor treatment of workers at home and abroad, products that don't perform as advertised, fake commodities, poor customer service, environmental pollution, to mention a few.Responsible behavior is important to your business success, but let's not forget that you're in business--you're not out to solve the world's problems. So how do you balance the two? What does it mean to be ethical in business? It simply requires that you follow your best moral instincts, even in areas that don't appear to involve moral issues, such as cost-benefit analyses. But while good ethics often equates to good business, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes being truly ethical means giving up something you want in exchange for doing the rightthing. That's why we worry about ethics in the first place--if it didn't cost us anything, everyone would be ethical all the time.Unit6SPORTS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH.Sports do much good to our health. Especially they can be of great value to our psychological health. People who are involved in athletics feel more self-sufficient and confident in their abilities. They feel they are in control of their own actions. Sports offer people an opportunity to experience If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.Unit7Life after RetirementThe moment of retirement will mean the beginning of a new life for Old Jack. From the age of 16 to 60, he kept working very hard. Work and study, family and society were what he focused on. Now, in retirement, he wants to have a life of his own. The first thing hewants to do is to travel around the world, to visit the African wildlife, to appreciate the glorious Western and Oriental culture and to go to every corner of the world he has ever dreamed of. Then, he will find a beautiful quiet place, and write. He will write about his own world. Maybe, he will not publish it, and he will simply write for fun. Of course, family life will remain important for him. Every week, when his family gathers together, they will share their happiness and solve their problems together. Life after retirement means much more time for him, and he will enjoy every minute of it.Unit8On GlobalizationIn the process of globalization, many foreign things have entered into our lives and have changed our lives. This has made the world become smaller and smaller. For example, we can watch foreign movies, enjoy foreign food, wear fashionable foreign clothes, and even use high-tech products imported from advanced countries. Some people even celebrate the foreign festivals and adopt foreign lifestyle or foreign ideasin order to be a global citizen. Whenever you go, you may find things that are familiar to you in your hometown or homeland. Many parts of the world are watching the same film, and the same song is popular at the same time all over the world. Even the style of architecture has become identical, especially in cosmopolitan cites, you may find some similar features in their city buildings. There are different ideas about globalization. Those who are in favor of globalization take a positive and optimistic attitude towards it. What they value most is the good effects of the globalization and the various benefits it brings about. However, there are also some people who strongly dislike the idea and the practice of globalization. They place more emphasis on the bad or evil effects of globalization. In my opinion, every coin has two sides. We should take a realistic attitude towards globalization. On the one hand, globalization of the economy and to some extent, the globalization of culture may bring some advantages. It may promote the development of less developed areas, improve some people's living standardand enrich their local culture, and also give people more chances to know about others which are quite different from their own. On the other hand, globalization may bring about some disadvantages or negative effects. For example, the world will lose its cultural diversity because of the invasion and prevailing of one culture, and some cultures will lose its cultural identities and peculiar characteristics. Thus, it's appropriate for us to take a balanced attitude towards globalization.。

1. What are the differences between motherly love and fatherly love?4:In the dormitory, Ann and Lucy open the door and fond Lily sitting on the bed with her eyes red. It’s obvious that she just cried.2:Hey, Lily, what’s wrong with you?3:Well, I’m fine, just leave me alone.1:Come on. Don’t be silly, we can’t do that. What’s going on?3:I just had a phone call with my father. We quarreled. Hey, isn’t fatherly love just like this: you geta good mark, and he would admire you, love you. But if you did something wrong, then everything changes.2:How about your mother, what did she say?3:I don’t know, my mother doesn’t care much about my study. She’s always that lovely, caring about my life issues.2:Well, that’s the difference between motherly love and fatherly love. It seems that motherly love is unconditional, but fatherly love if the opposite. I love you because you do your duty, because you are like me. My dad always asks me not to do this, not to do that. Or something’s good, something’s bad. He never care about my feelings. It seems that I’m just an accessory of him.1:Yeah, I think motherly love is unconditional, my mother is thoughtful, she always gives help when I need. Besides, she forgives the mistakes I made, what’s more, she always tells me to do everything in my own right. But my father is strict to me, he helps me set goals one by one. After I achieve these goals, he will give me prices, so I think fatherly love is conditional love. So, don’t be sad, everything will be just fine..3:Well, I think maybe I should talk with my father again.4:And that’s the end of the story, we can see that motherly love is like water, soft and kind, taking care of our daily life. And father love, just like mountain, is deep and cannot been seen easily. But if you ever need any help, he will be the one who’s always there supporting you. That’s the difference between motherly love and father love.2. Do you agree that men and women cannot communicate with each other? Give your reasons.4:Oh I can’t bare this any longer!3:What’s wrong?4:My parents quarreled. Again! Why can’t men and women communicate with each other? It seems that women only care about the tiny stuff which men will never pay attention. Today when my mother was telling my father about the new clothes she bought, he was thinking about the NBA games. Then my mother complained that dad don’t care about her and don’t love her any more. So they just quarreled. Oh, I’m just fed up with them.1:I don’t agree that men and women can’t communicate with each other. As we all know, men and women are different not only in body feature but also character inside. When men and women communicate with each other, they can learn something from different sexual distinction. For example, men are brave, strong, responsible. Women are patient, acceptance, these qualities are important to our success, but all these qualities can’t learn from the same sexual distinction. So I don’t agree that men and women can’t communicate with each other.3:Yeah it’s ridiculous that men and women can’t communicate with each other. First, we live in the same language—Chinese. Of course we can communicate with each other. Now in the school, there are women teachers and boy students. If they can’t communicate, how can the boy get the knowledge from the teacher? Maybe sometimes men and women misunderstood each other, but, it’s not a big problem.2:As far as I’m concerned, men can communicate with women. I have three reasons. First, there are various of couples in the world. They live together and have good relationships. If they can’t communicate with each other, they will break up. Second, more and more women went out for works. So men and women have more chances to communicate. And they always can communicate well. The last but not the least, boys and girls study at school together, they can get along well each other and have a good communication. So in my opinion, men and women can communicate with each other.4:All right, maybe you’re right. I should go and persuade them. Thank you!123:That’s OK.3. Tell your experience of being misunderstood and discuss hoe to avoid misunderstanding.4:So guys, it’s time for channel 314 again! Today we’re going to talk about misunderstandings. Misunderstandings can occur in our daily life and nobody can avoid them. But there must be some ways to solve the problems. We have invited three person to tell us their experiences of being misunderstood. And first of all, Lucy.1:When I study at middle school, my school gives every student a card for eating, but I seldom use it. One night a thief stole many things from the dormitory and my card was one of them. Because there’s little money in it, so I think nothing about it. To my surprise, a girl came to our classroom next day to ask me to pay back all things which were stoled. Because my card was in her bag when she waked up and my card was n’t locked. So she insisted to say I steal her things. I spent much time to solve the things. From this thing I know when we lost things we must tell the related section in time.4:And you? Ann ?2:Once I told my father that no one in school can talk with me. He said you can talk with them first. Unfortunately, he misunderstood me. What I mean is that I can’t open my floodgates to them, but he think I can’t communicate with them. I think the best way to avoid misunderstanding is that our women should say things clearly, don’t tend to exaggerate. And men should rethink or translate what they have heard, try to really understand women’s complaint. In that way, men would argue less and be able to respond more positively. So they will avoid misunderstandings.3:4:So to avoid misunderstandings we should say things clearly and rethink about our words. Remember to stand at others’ point and think like them, it will help you understand them more. If we pay enough attention to these things, we’ll be able be communicate easier.Thank you!4. What accounts for winning and losing?4:Hello everyone! Welcome to watch channel 314. Today we’re going to talk about winning and losing. Everyone wants to be a winner and doesn’t want to be a loser. So what accounts for winning and losing? We’ve invited three persons to tell us their understandings. And first, Lucy. 1:I think the reason why people winning is that people have precious qualities, foe example, gemciness. It can make people work together. Besides, a winner is the person who even in the face of national and international difficulty, he does see himself as helpless. He can’t do anything to damage the environment and he is held back by his low capacity to express himself.2:There are many competitions in the world. So everyone has chance to become a winner or a loser. But there still be some qualities that needs to be a winner. First, a winner is not afraid to do his own thinking and to use his own knowledge. He listens to others, evaluates what they say, and comes to his own conclusion. Second, a winner is flexible, without guilty he enjoy his own accomplishments. Without envy he enjoys the accomplishments of others. The last, a winner does what he can to make the world a better place. On the contrary, a loser tries to manipulate others living up to his expectations and channels his energies into living up to their expectations.3:Winners are always full of confidence. I think it’s an important thing for them to be successful. Whatever bad situation they are in, they believe that I have the capacity ad I can make it. What’s more, they can channel themselves into what they concern. Once they set their goal, they will never give up. I think all these above make a person succeed. On the contrary, losers lack these important things, so they failed.4:So we can draw a conclusion that a winner must be confident, hardworking, flexible and have the will to achieve his goals. Once you have made up your mind, keep going, and the result will turn out to be wonderful.Thank you !5. What’s your understanding of the idiom——Better Late Than Never? Is there any other example in the daily life that may support it?2:Hey, could you do me a favor?1:Sure, what’s the matter?2:I have just read the idiom better late than never, but I can’t fully get it. Can you explain it to me? 1:Oh, I think it means someday I have classes, but I have something important make me late to go to the classes. At this moment, an idea that whether I go to the classes trouble me. After thinking twice, I decided to have the classes, because my attitude towards this thing can been seen. As we all know, better late than never. Besides, it’s a way to show my respect to the teacher. What’s more, I can learn something which may be important to me in the long run.3:I think your example is not quite properly. Here’s mine. In my high school, there’s a boy who never take study seriously and always skipped the classes. As a result, he did poor in the exam. Then our teacher talked with him for a long time. Luckily, he realized that he should not be so confused and should do something for his future. After that, he became a hardworking person. Of course, all efforts will pay off eventually. When he was admitted to a good university, he said happily:”I’m so happy with what I had done, it’s not late.”4:I think you’ve got the point. When I was in the middle school, once I quarreled with one of my best friends due to some silly misunderstandings. We didn’t talk with each other for days and regarded each other as strangers. We all thought that it’s not my fault, I won’t apologize. But after a few days, I can’t bear the silence any more, so I just went to her to express my feelings, we both realize the mistake. It’s not late, so we are still good friends now.2:Oh I think I fully understand its meaning now. when I was young, I always quarreled with my parents. They disagree what I said and forbid my actions. In my mind, they don’t love me. But with time going by, I realized that what they do is good for me. I think it is better late than never to feel my parents’ love. So the meaning is that no matter how late it is, just do it and you will never regret of doing nothing. Right? Thank you!134;That’s OK.6. Talk about how psychology plays an important role in our daily life?4:Hello everyone! Welcome to watch channel 314. Today we’re going to talk about psychology. You know, it’s a very mysterious subject, but it has a very close connection with our life. And today, we also invited three persons to share their thoughts. Welcome!1:In our daily life, there’s a special psychology of bargain hunting. In order to save money, I will go to many places to look for sales, low prices and discounts. However, I often buy things I don’t need just because they are cheap. Every time when I buy them I think I’m a winner, because I buy many things on lower prices, but after I go home I feel sorry for what I have done, this situation usually happens. I think I must take actions to prevent this thing happen again.2:One day I was ill. I felt I’m going to die. So I went to see a doctor. He gave me some medicine. Then I stayed in bed for a long time thinking I won’t be OK. Then day later, my mother gave me some pills, she said it’s the latest medicine and is more effective. After I eat them, I think I will be better soon and things turn out to be true! But after I recovered, my mother told me that the so-called medicine she gave me was just some placebo. The real reason I get better is because I believe I will be. From this thing, I find psychology plays an important role in my daily life.3:I think psychology really plays an important role in our daily life. I have a friend who hates mouse. Even a picture of the little animal will make her cry and run away at once. And I asked her what cause her to be like that. She told me that when she was a little girl, a rat bit her. You can see cases like my friend. If a person had bitten by a dog, he may be afraid of dogs. But are dogs so horrible? Certainly not.4:So we can see that it’s the way psychology plays its part in our life. Shopping habits, healthy condition, and even what we’re scared. I have another case, once a person made up his mind of doing something and the willing is very strong, then no matter how difficult it is, he will manage to finish it because he believe he can made it. So we can make full use of psychology and let it help us reach our goals.Thank you for watching!7. Are you compulsive spenders or bargain hunters? Talk about your spending habits.4:Look! My new jeans, what do you think about them?3:Oh it’s wonderful, where did you buy it?4:The market near Gaosha. But the bargain was terrible. You know I have never buy this kind of stuff by myself before, my mother took care of all these things. So I was freak out when one of my friends cut the price to 60 when the assistant charged us 120. Then the assistant asked for my opinion, I was confused and said 80, but my friend said it’s too high. So we just decided to go to the next store to have a look. But the assistant rushed out and grabbed my arm and insisted to sell me the jeans. I was totally freak out, why was she so willing to sell me the stuff? And after a hard fight, we finally bought it at 65. I swear it’s the first and the last time I go there!3:Oh, your experience is very interesting. You’re not good at bargain, me too! You know, when the shopkeeper tells me that it’s cheap enough and will be sell out soon, I will buy it without hesitation. I like shopping and enjoy it. It can make me happy. Once I get into the supermarket, I will buy a lot of things even I don’t need them. What’s worse, if I feel sad, I will buy more to make myself better, so I’m always in a red.1:Oh, you’re so strange. I’m not a compulsive spender or a bargain hunter. I’m a economical person.I seldom go to the shops. Sometimes I go there with my classmates, I usually buy nothing, because I have had one. On the other hand, I made a chart that every month I spend, I think I haven’t get the ability to earn money now, even I have the ability to earn money. I won’t spend it.2:However, I’m different from yours. Before I go shopping, I will think about what I need and write them down on a shopping list. So I can save a lot of money. In my opinion, the best attitude is rational shopping. It has three advantages. First, it can help you control yourself. Second, if helps you use money more effectively. The last but not the least, it can help you save a lot of money. As a grow-up, we should learn to use money. So we need to have the rational shopping attitude.4:Yeah, you’re right.8. Share the dreams with your partners that impressed you most and try to interpret them.4:Hello everyone! Welcome to watch channel 314. Recently, the film Inception is very popular and we all know that it’s about the dreams. So today we’re going to talk about dreams. People have dreams every night and some of them are impressive, but some of them cannot be well remembered. So today we are going to talk about the most impressive dreams we’ve had. And first, Lucy.1:Once I had a dream. It happen on the which I usually walk when I was a child. That day many eggs laid on the road, I was so surprised and happy that I picked up one, but at that moment a man’s voice came behind me:”put it down, it’s mine.”I was so scared and put it down, but I didn’t intend to do that. So in order to steal his eggs I made many plans and put them into practice all night. I think it’s because in the real life, my father was strict to me, he always tells me what to do and what not to do. If there’s something I want to do but he doesn’t agree, I’ll do it without telling him.4:So you must be afraid of your father. And you? Ann? Did you ever have an impressive dream?2:Oh, yes of course. I had a very impressive dream when I was young. That night I dreamt that I was the only person in the world. I was totally scared. When I went out , I found all the shops opened with nobody in them. So I took a lot of sweets from this shop and bring much chocolate from that shop. I was so happy that I forget everything. When I wanted to eat them, I heard my mother’s voice. Then I had to wake up. I found I was in my bed and I’m hungry. That’s the reason I had that dream I think.3:And here’s mine. I don’t dream very often, so a little dream can be impressive. But a few days ago I dreamt that I was in danger. Maybe it was a sunny afternoon, I went for a walk along the countryside. Suddenly a dinosaur turned up which seemed very hungry. And it saw me, I was scared to death and began to run at once. But the dinosaur ran after me. I felt too tired to carry on so I just stopped. Just at that moment, I woke up. Oh my god. To my relief, it’s just a dream. Maybe I have so much pressure in the real life so I had that dream.4:Oh, that’s quite funny. And I’d like to share my dream. Yesterday I dreamt that I was running on the playground, but as I get to the finish line, there are many people who are queuing in the line to buy milk tea. I can’t get though so I just stand in the line to wait for my turn. But just then XueYugang, the teacher of our class, you know, appeared and gave me a cup of milk tea. Then I just woke up. I think it’s because I was too nervous about the 800 meters running test and because of the diet, I haven’t drank milk tea for a long time. As for XueYugang, I think it’s because he’s so serious in the real life and I’d like him to be a nice guy in my dream. So keep dreaming, it’s a world you can do anything you dare not do in the real life, no matter how crazy it is, because it’s a dream, it’s a world of your own.9. Will your dreams have great effects on your mood? Why or why not?4:So everyone can have different dreams and these dreams will have some effects in your daily life. And today’s topic is will your dreams have great effects on your mood? Three persons have been invited. And first of all, Lucy?1:I think my dream often effect on my mood, you know, at night I dream a bad thing happen in my dream. When I woke up the next day, the flash in my dream will float, it makes me don’t want to do anything, sometimes it makes me distract, and make mistaks which makes matter worse. If I dream a good dream, I will have a good mood the next day. I think there is no difficulty doing anything.2:In my opinion, if I think something in the day, I will dream it when I am sleeping. And the dreams always affect my mind. If I had a bad thing, I would be unhappy the next day. For example, the night I dreamt I was digging the hole to plant trees, the next day I would felt tired and frustrated. But if I dreamt a good thing, I would be happy the next day. It just like I dreamt I had my favorite food, the next day I would be glad and satisfied. So I think my dreams will have great effects on my mood.3:Dreams will not have great effects on my mood, I think. It is just a dream, and won’t happen in the real life, right? It can not be true. If I dreamt something bad I may wake up with screaming and can not help trembling , then I will tell myself it’s just a dream and I would go on sleeping. As we all know, dreams will reflect our daily life. If we dream often, we may find the answer what makes us nervous and upset and then solve it.4:So these are your opinions. And as for me, it depends on what I have dreamt, if I had a bad dream, I will tell myself it’s not true, it’s just a dream. But when I dreamt something wonderful, I will regard it as a good forecast of something. And I will be happy all the day. That’s a good way to make myself happier. Maybe you can try it.And here comes the end, thank you for watching!10. Talk about the Western fast food in China1:Hey, New Year’s Day is coming, shall we eat out for celebration? How about the KFC?3:Oh, I like western fast food. It has become a part of our daily life in China. You can see Mc and KFC everywhere. And it’s common that there’s several fast food shops in the same street. You can see that the KFC is always full of people and it’s hard for us to find a seat sit at lunch time. But western fast food is not very healthy, because they cook with a lot of oil and has a lot of fat. Though many people realize western fast food’s unhealthy, it’s still popular in China.1:As we all know. Chinese like eating, they made many kinds of food, at the same time, western fast food was brought in China. In China, many people like western fast food not only they are fast which wouldn’t wait for a long time but also they can satisfy our will to taste different tastes. And some western fast food was put into Chinese things which make it more popular in China.2:Yeah, KFC is the most famous. Western fast food is convenient and fast, people can take the food without waiting. So everyone likes it. When people get into the shops of the western fast food, they will find it clean, light and high-level. Not only children like to eat, but also adults. We Chinese see eating them as a fashion thing. So western fast food take a place in Chinese food market and become more and more popular.4:Oh I don’t like western fast food, it’s unhealthy and will make me feel sick. We are Chinese, western fast food may be popular, but it’s just they are new here and people are always curious about trying new things. What’s more, it’s New Years’Day, why don’t we try some traditional Chinese food instead of KFC or Pizzahut? I know a very good restaurant which offer traditional HangZhou dishes, I’m sure you will enjoy it.123:OK, maybe we can try the western fast food next time.11. Talk about your food likes and dislikes, then give your reasons.4:Welcome back to channel 314! This time we’ll talk about foods. People from different places have different tastes, and today we’ve invited three people to introduce their food likes and dislikes. And first of all, Lucy.1:You know, I’m from HeNan andI like eat, so I like all kinds of food. But most of all, I like cabbage, potato and pork, beaf, fish. Besides, I feel the food that my mother makes is the most delicious in the world. What’s more, I dislike food that isn’t cooked properly, when I eat them I feel I’m a flash eater. I hate that feeling, so I don’t eat food which isn’t cooked properly. And I don’t like mutton, every time when I eat it, I feel sick, it surprised me why so many people like eating mutton, which in my eyes is hard accepted. And I like to eat hot food!3:And I come from NingBo, a place near the sea. I’m particular about food. So I don’t like a lot of food, especially hot food, I won’t eat it. I think it’s crazy that many people are absorbed in it, yeah, hot food will make me mad. And for my favorite food, seafood is the very one, such as fish, crab, shrimp and so on. If you give me a plate of crab, I’ll eat them up at once. Of course they can’t be hot. And about vegetables, I like most of them, but I will never try hot ones.2:Yeah, I agree with you, maybe it’s because we come from the nearby places. What I like most is sea food, I like them because they contain a lot of nutritions and taste so good. What I hate is SiChuan food. Not only because it’s too hot, but also its terrible smell. Eating too much hot will hurt my health,my stomach can’t stand eating too hot. So I dislike SiChuan food.4:So it must be a hard time for you two to stay in HangZhou because the seafood here is not that fresh. And so much for different tastes from different places, I’d like to tell you my likes and dislikes during my 18 years’ life. When I was a child, I love eating western fast food and eat out is the most happy thing to me. And now I like the dishes cooked by my mom most because they’re full of love. So different places, different times, different tastes.。

U2-2 Is letter writing better than calling? Why?
A:When we want to communicate with our relatives or friends, what will we meditate, to make a call or write a letter? The majority of people, who have a preference for calling, comment that calls, play an important role in fast-pace society nowadays.
B:It's the fast speed and large quantities of information that makes it a popular communication way. In addition, we can save up time and enjoy the convenience, in which it functions well. For example, with the rapid development of high-technology, video phones help people get over the homesickness.
C:However, others claim that writing letters, of course, has its own special advantages, while an increasing number of people are inclined to escape picking up the pen to write something. You know, it's a poetic and expressive way to convey one's emotion by writing letter.
D:I can’t agree more. I’ve mentioned yet. Yesterday I heard from a friend. When I opened it, I was intrigued by the inspiring words on the page. A letter attaches more importance to our well-wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be reads more than once savored and treasured.
B:Yeah, sometimes they are inspiring, and sometimes they are encouraging. You can write a lot of things in a letter and it does not
cost you much to send, but it is slow, and you have to wait a long time to get a response from your friends.
A:However, making telephone calls is much faster,so they are more appropriate when you need a quick reply. They also enable you to hear your friend’s voice, which is a wonderful feeling. It is so easy just to pick up the phone and call whereas writing takes more energy.
C:Well, sounds reasonable.Making a call brings us convenience because we can do it wherever and whenever we like. Also, we can communicate with people in the casual way of chatting on the phone, which seems to be friendlier.
D:To be honest, it sometimes happens, but not always. Three days before, I received a call from my close friend. Unfortunately, we ended up with a quarrel. Furthermore, telephoning is expensive, what's worth mentioning is it's cheap expense and the ancient history.
C:However, writing takes time; it’s far easi er to pick up the phone. What’s more, it may cause misunderstandings just for some words’ double meanings even if it may bring warmness.
B:No nonono. In a world too often cold and unresponsive, such words bring warmth and reassurance. We all need a boost from time to time, and few lines of praise have been known to turn around a day, even a life.
A:From my perspective, why don't we take an advantage of the two communication ways? Although, we may be equipped with a diversity of technological tools, ranging from computers to mobile phones, we will find a different pleasure and leisure of life in writing.
D: So it is very hard to say which is better. People have different opinion from one to another, and in different situations there would be different answers. The only thing we can do is to make a wise choice between writing and calling according to the situation。
