It requires amazing coordination and flexibility. Kabaddi is an ancient sport where teams take turns sending a "raider" into the other team's half to try to tag opponents and get back to theirown side. If the raider gets caught, they're out! We got to watch videos of all these awesome sports and I thought they looked like so much fun.After learning about traditional sports, we split into groups and each group had to research a more modern international sport like soccer, basketball, tennis, etc. My group did soccer and we made a presentation all about the history of the sport, the rules, famous players and teams, and big tournaments like the World Cup. Presenting to the class was kind of nerve-wracking but also really rewarding when we nailed it!The absolute highlight of the unit though was the sports festival we had at the end. All the kids got to try out different sports and games from around the world that our teachers set up on the playground. There were stations for things like cricket, foot bagging, robot running (where you race with these special robots to help you run faster), and even sepak takraw with a low kiddie net!My favorite was definitely sepak takraw - it was SO hard but I loved the challenge of trying to kick the rattan ball over the net. I wasn't very good but it was a total blast. I also really enjoyed the foot bagging station where you have to keep a little beanbag thingy off the ground by kicking it back up with your feet overand over. Apparently it started in China and people can get crazy good at doing tricks with it!At the end of the festival, they passed out awards for sportsmanship to kids who showed great attitudes and respect for the rules. I was honored to get one of the awards!
