My landlady works the night 38 at the hospital, so at this hour, the house will be as dark and blank as the others on this street. Everything is quiet and closed. I turn around and wait for him. I wait and wait until he catches up to where I stand, with nothing to 50 myself but the urgency to escape 51 what might happen but what has already happened in my mind. He comes close, closer. I can see his eyes (or I think I can).

“Will you please leave m e alone?” It is neither a question nor a scream. My voice is low, conversational. Nothing can be 52 than what I have imagined. He pauses. “I’m not going to 53 you,” he whispers, then turns around and walks back to his car.

Although this incident was important to me, it should not be understood as 54 action for anyone else. Each of us responds in our own way. But for me, a young student, it sealed the connection between my imagination and the source of courage. I did not run away. The night I 55 my ground.

It seems that many college graduates are unsure of what to do with their lives, so they jump back into the college

scene by default(违约). But graduate school is costly, time consuming and requires a lot of in-depth study, and also parents will lay down more money and banks will supply more student loans.

However, there are some students who should be pursuing graduate degrees. Teachers, lawyers, doctors, professors and ministers are a few examples of those who will benefit from class work past a bachelor’s degree. Their professions call for additional courses and more specialization and therefore higher education is a must. Still, all students in general should not adopt the idea that graduate school is necessary for individuals who want to make more money. Working hard right after college can lead to promotions in the future. It seems that it does more good to network or internship(实习) with professionals while pursu ing a bachelor’s degree than it does to complete a master’s and distant oneself from the world of work.

If a student graduates with a four-year degree and immediately enters the work force, he will most likely start an entry-level pay. In a couple of years this employee will gain seniority and experience, therefore increasing their chance for pay rise. He will learn the information at his job-site that he did not learn in school. His bachelor’s degree loan can be immediately chipped away, and his maturity level can increase as real work related responsibilities set in. But, if the student pursues a master’s degree, he may be able to demand more pay initially when he finally goes job hunting, but years of serious money making as well as work experience will already be lost.

Students should not shy from the workforce just because uncertainty follows graduation. Those who pursue a graduate degree just because they do not want to leave school and because they vi ew the “real world” as scary should think again. Using graduate studies as a hiding place from the full-time job is a waste of time.

58.College graduates who go to work can _________________ than those who pursue graduate degrees.

A. make more money in the future

B. acquire more experience

C. get a better job

D. become more responsible

59.The underlined words “chipped away” can most possibly be replaced by________________.

D. paid off

60. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. College graduates shouldn’t pursue graduate degrees

B. College graduates should think twice

C. How can college graduates make more money?

D. Students use graduate school to avoid reality

Although it might have happened anywhere, my encounter with the green banana started on a steep mountain road in the central area of Brazil. I was driving up through beautiful countryside when the radiator (水箱) began to leak. I stopped at the next village, which consisted of a small store and a few houses. People came over to look. "That's easy to fix," a man said. He sent a boy running for some green bananas. He patted me on the shoulder, assuring me that everything would work out. "Green bananas," he smiled. Everyone agreed.

We chatted casually while all the time I wa s wondering what they could possibly do to my radiator with their green bananas. I did not ask them, though, as that would show my ignorance, so I talked about the beauty of the land that lay before our eyes. Huge rock formations, like Sugar Loaf in Rio,rose up all around us. "Do you see that tall one right over there?" asked the man, pointing to a particularly tall, slender pinnacle (尖顶) of dark rock. "That rock marks the center of the world."

I looked to see if he was teasi ng me, but his face was serious. He, in turn, inspected me carefully, as if to make sure I grasped the significance of his statement. The occasion called for some show of recognition on my part. "The center of the World?" I repeated, trying to show interest. He nodded, "The absolute center. Everyone around here knows it."

At that moment the boy returned with an armful of green bananas. The man cut one in half and pressed the cut end against the radiator jacket. The banana melted into a glue against the hot metal, stopping the leaks instantly. I was so astonished at this that I mush have looked rather foolish and everyone laughed. They then refilled my radiator and gave me extra bananas to take along. An hour later, after using the green banana once more, my radiator and I reached our destination.

It took me a little longer to fully grasp the importance of the rock which the villagers believed marked the center of the world. I had at first doubted their claim, as I knew for a fact that the center was located somewhere else in New England. After all, my grandfather had come from there. But gradually I realized the village people had a very reasonable belief and I agreed with them. We all tend to regard as the center that special place where we are known, where we kno w others, where things mean much to us, and where we ourselves have both identity and meaning: family, school, town and local region could all be our center of the world.

Th e lesson which gradually dawned on me was actually very simple. Every place has special meanings for the

people in it, and in a certain sense every place represents the center of the world. The world has numerous such centers, and no one student or traveler can experience all of them. But once a conscious breakthrough to a second

center is made, a life-long perspective and collection can begin.

The cultures of the world are full of unexpected green bananas with special value and meaning. They have been

there for ages, ripening slowly, perhaps waiting patiently for people to come along to encounter them. In fact, a green

banana is waiting for all of us if we would leave our own centers of the world in order to experience other places.

61.The author stopped at a village on his way because he wanted to ____.

A. have his car repaired

B. enjoy the beautiful scenery

C. look for some bananas to fix his radiator

D. talk to some villagers to learn about their way of life

62. What's the author's reaction to the man's remarks on the center of the earth?

A. He thought the man was serious about what he said.

B. He thought that the man was telling the truth.

C. He thought that the man was telling a story.

D. He thought the man was making fun of him.

63. What does the author come to learn from the man's remarks?

A. The rock mentioned by the man is really the center of the world for everyone.

B. There are lots of such "rocks" in the world representing the center of the world.

C. There is only one center in the world that is actually in New England.

D. As a matter of fact, the center of the world does not exist in his opinion.

64. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. A green banana refers to a banana that is not ripe.

B. A green banana is something that can be used to repair a leaking radiator.

C. A green banana refers to a certain culture that is unknown to an outsider.

D. A green banana is something useful that we find unexpectedly.

The First Hello

The man from the telephone department got off the bus, and made his way to the tea stall, wiping the sweat off his

head, face, then slipping his handkerchief under his shirt to wipe his neck and back. It was a year ago that the phone

line had been installed, six months later men from the public works department had come to put up the phone booth — a neat box-like structure, with a glass window, and wooden ledges, yellow in colour. And days after that, a painter

had taken an entire day to colour in broad, black brushstrokes, the words: STD Booth, local and STD allowded.

No one could tell that the last word had been misspelled. Besides, he had taken the entire day. After he had a cup of tea, he had left, waving cheerfully. And now months later, someone else was here again.

Everyone watched the man as he sat on the bench. No one said a word, and soon the sound of him slurping his tea

filled the hot afternoon. A few leaves fell, heavy in the heat, and sometimes a car passed, on its way to the main city

farther away.

When the man had finished, he made to pay but the tea shop owner who sat behind his steaming kettle and the

washed upturned cups, waved him away.

“You are our guest here.”

So the man took his handkerchief out again and wiped his face.

They crowded around him as he shut himself up in the phone booth. When the children pressed their nose against

the glass, he shooed them away, as he took out a shiny black instrument and placed it on the narrow shelf. A sigh of

satisfaction passed through everyone that soon changed to an excited yell as they saw him dial a number, pressing a

finger into the ringed dialer of the phone and letting it go all the way in a half-circle. A while later, they hear him say into the mouthpiece, “Hello.”

“Hello, ” the children around the booth took up the cry, the teas hop owner broke into a smile and the men waiting for a bus smiled and said hello to each other. The sadhu(印度的僧人) who sat under the banyan tree nodded wisely. As the sound carried, more hellos were heard. The women winnowing grain giggled as they tried the word tentatively, the shepherds feeding their flocks called out to their sheep, laughing as they used the word.

“It’s a big occasion,” said the headman, in an awed voice.

“It is,” agreed those around him. The telephone man emerged and handed over a small chit of paper to the headman. “This is the telephone number.”

The headman looked at it reverently as if it were a mantra(符咒). The others around him read out the numbers

slowly, digit-by-digit.

The telephone man was now too tired to notice the cheering around him. He knew he had to wait long before the

bus to take him back arrived. As he sipped his second cup of tea, he remembered something else.

“Oh, you can’t start using the phone now. The minister will come next month and inaugurate it.”

No one said a word. No one was surprised. They had waited so long; a month more did not really matter.

65. In the story, fitting a working telephone booth ______________.

A. was a process that had already taken 12 months

B. was in the charge of the headman.

C. should have been finished more than a year ago

D. was an artistic challenge for a local painter

66. A misspelled word on the booth _______________.

A. was a joke shared by the painter and the local people

B. made the painter miss his tea break

C. went unnoticed by the local people

D. kept everyone occupied for an entire day

67. When the man from the telephone department arrived, _______________.

A. the hot afternoon was filled with quiet expectation

B. there was a sudden rush of activity in the village

C. he was greeted like a regular customer

D. he learned about the village while having a nice drink

68. What can be inferred from the story?

A. The man from the telephone department had a mentally demanding job.

B. Only the minister had the authority to make the first call.

C. It was a distant village free from modern technology.

D. Few of the local children went to school for education.

69. The examples of the children, the teashop owner, the men waiting for the bus, the women and the shepherds are given to illustrate ___________.

A. the local people’s curiosity for the new thing

B. the ignorance of the local people

C. the local people’s enthusiasm for English learning

D. the popularity of the man from the telephone department

70. What words can be used to best describe the local people?

A. Innocent and cooperative.

B. Hospitable and respectful.

C. Patient and competent.

D. Independent and admirable.

Few people need to be told not to overspend on credit or debit cards or to curb impulse shopping. You know you shouldn’t, even if you always do. What you need are solutions. Whatever your problems with money, you can change —but it’s going to take work. After all, you’re trying to break lifelong patterns. Start with these strategies.

Strategy 1

A lot of people set themselves up for failure because they have a mindset of either indulgence (放纵) or deprivation (克制). If you try to deprive yourself of too much, where you spend almost nothing, then you end up giving up, and you indulge, and then you overspend. So if you have an unrealistic plan, you’re probably going to lose control. Good habits happen when planned; bad habits happen on their own.

Strategy 2

Changing your mindset is effective in solving the problem. Take Smith-Acuna for example. She says she had a couple in therapy who constantly quarreled about what she feels has become a monetary cliché. They would always argue about how much money they were spending at Starbucks. The wife loved capping off each workday with a drink. Ultimately, the wife ended up quitting her Starbucks habit. Instead of replacing her drink with nothing, she got something else, something free, in return.

Strategy 3

It’s a good start if you switch from paying for merchandise and services with a debit or credit card to paying with cash. It’s easy when you’re using plastic to mindlessly swipe and fall into a pattern of not thinking or noticing how much you’re actually spending. You can divide up your money and put it into envelopes, marking down on the envelopes what each pile of money is for. That can make it easier to see where your money is going.

Strategy 4

Get a receipt for every purchase. Breaking up your expenses into categories like food, clothing, housing, medical care and so on, but also labeling each expense as a need or a want. Be realistic as to what is really necessary. A need is something where you would die or go to jail if you didn’t spend the money or ruin your credit. At the end of the month, total up all the categories. Do this, and you’ll be more educated about how much money you actually have, and how much you have left over for fun stuff.

Strategy 5

There is probably a reason you developed bad habits, which are often adopted on the road easier traveled. So if you’re suddenly balancing your bank account every day, or you’re regularly putting money into an emergency fund, plan to give yourself some sort of prize for the past two weeks. Y ou’ve been saving money or spending it more wisely,

高三英语上学期第十五周周练试题

横峰中学2016-17学年度上学期周练(第15周) 高三年级英语试卷 考试日期:12月6日 阅读理解: A Counterfeit (假冒的) goods, or false versions of products, may cost the government of Kenya as much as $1 billion each year. The fake goods also hurt business owners who find it hard to keep customers. But information technology is being used to try to stop the problem. Jemima Mwafigu is a 34-year-old businesswoman who sells products like perfume. But in the first year of running her business, she found it hard to keep customers because of counterfeit goods. Ms. Mwafigu says her business has improved since she began using a smart phone application called Barcode (条码) Scanner. The app is used to authenticate (验证) products. It checks to make sure the products are not counterfeit. “With this application I'm able to scan the bar codes of each perfume and instantly I get the production date, the expiration date and I'm able to know the safety,” she says. “That way, I have confidence in selling to my customers.” In 2010, Kenya created the Anti-Counterfeit Agency, or ACA, to fight against illegal trade. The ACA has successfully asked government officials for stronger punishments for counterfeiters. Agnes Karingu is the agency’s acting director for research and awareness. She says the ACA is trying to stay one step ahead of those making fake goods. “We are also looking into IT solutions where we can be able to use SMS progr ams, bar codes and information sharing,” she says. “The end users of the products will actually be able to get the authentication information, and this information comes back to ACA and intellectual pr operty rights holders.” The agency is testing another program called Allvirtuous. The application is another way to find out if a product is real or not by scanning its barcode. The barcode information is sent to a database. Then a result is sent back to the app. The International Chamber of Commerce is a global business organization. It says the value of counterfeit goods produced around the world is expected to be more than $1.7 trillion (万亿) this year.

2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 (含答案)

2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 一、 We smile because we are happy, and we frown because we are sad.Recent studies suggest that our emotions are driven by their related facial expressions. This February psychologists at the University of Cardiff in Wales found that people whose ability to frown is lessened by botox injections(肉毒杆菌注射)are happier,on average, than people who can frown. The researchers administered an anxiety and depression questionnaire to 25females,half of whom had received botox injections to stop frowning. The botox injected people reported feeling happier and less anxious in general. In a related study from March, scientists at the Technical University of Munich found that the botox subjects had much lower activity in the brain circuits(回路)involved in emotional processing and responses—in the amygdala, hypothalamus and other parts of the brain—as compared with controls who had not received treatment. The concept works the opposite way, too.People who frown during an unpleasant procedure report feeling more pain than those who do not, according to a study published in May2008in the Journal of Pain.Researchers applied heat to the forearms of29participants,who were asked to either make unhappy, neutral or relaxed faces during the procedure. Those who exhibited negative expressions reported being in more pain than the other two groups. No one yet knows why our facial expressions influence our emotions as they seem to.The associations in our mind between how we feel and how we react may be so strong that our expressions simply end up strengthen our emotions—there may be no evolutionary reason for the connection. 1.What can we know about the result of the study from Paragraph2? A.The ability to frown should be stopped by injection. B.Less frowns make people happier. C.Women love to frown and feel sad. D.Half women have no ability to feel happy. 2.What did scientists do in the related studies?

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held?
